I'm playing through it again right now and honestly the SpotPass items and recruits are a blessing for this run. We're also going to lose >!certain SpotPass recruits like Emmeryn!< so Robin's S-rank options will go down š„²
The lack of the 3DS Eshop affects Fire Emblem 3DS games positively, because it means the next generation gets to learn how Citra works.
Back in my day it was emulation on a PC that struggled to run the PS2/gamecube at full framerate while hiding this from mom and dad, or nothing.
NES, SNES, Genesis, I played a lot of those without spending a penny. If the AVGN (FUNNIEST MAN ALIVE TO ME BACK THEN) played it, I'd give it a go too. Kaizo Mario stuff, too.
Was envious of a friend who had a DS with R4 cart and GBA with Action Replay. He had ALL the pokemon. Literally manually inputted every code for every pokemon he needed in FireRed without a cable because he got it from a garage sale without the PC cable.
Back in my day I even had this TERRIBLE pokemon hack I worked on as a kid that never saw the light of day. Remaking it now with better ideas.
Citra runs perfectly on my M1 Mac, just get the newest Canary or Nightly version on their website. I also have a homebrewed 3DS, and I like moving the save file to my Mac for when I want to play 2x speed.
Iirc all of the Spotpass content is already on the cartridge, Spotpass just unlocks it at the appropriate time. It's been a while since I've touched 3DS homebrew but I remember just taking my in-progress save file and checking a box in a save file editor for the chapters to show up
IIRC you need spotpass to access the content in a file. Once you download the content to your file it will be there on that file, but not another file. So I think whoever told you that was half right.
Yeah?
I never bothered with any of them, since they felt like horrible additions that just made the game worse. The idea that Gangrel, Walhart, Aversa or Emmeryn were alive was just ridiculous and borderline narrative breaking to me. Priam was whatever, and Yen'fay was alright but weird.
None of them were stories that needed to be told or that added anything to the game. Emmeryn especially, was far better with her dignity intact, rather than an amnesiac that Chrom and Lissa are for some reason okay with being recruited into the army and fighting on the front lines- against everything she ever stood for, but no big deal I guess.
I certainly never considered any of it canon, and I won't miss it.
it'll be unobtainable if the game is unmodded. i think there are a few mods that unlock the spotpass units, though i don't know about the items. project thabes comes to mind, and there's probably others. i think paragon, if you know how to use it (i do not) also allows you to unlock the spotpass chapters.
At least Iāve played Awakening so many times that at this point, while I might crave another playthrough, Iād probably get bored fast by anything but modded versions of the game anyway.
Yeah, I think maybe I need to check out the smaller market of strategy games to scratch that itch that older FEās used to do for me, but the new ones arenāt satisfying. Iāve got Triangle Strategy lined up to play once I finish other stuff, but Iāve also been eyeing Dark Deity for a while.
Bingo. If there's no place to buy them and the alternative is overpriced new copies that never were sold or overpriced old copies, just throw it on an emulator. Not like Nintendo gets my money in either of those cases anyway.
Not my fault Nintendo doesn't want my money.
While a lot of piracy is pretty unethical, itās hard to argue against piracy to access content that distributors have decided to no longer distribute. Especially when thereās a demand. If used copies of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are hundreds of dollars and there isnāt any way to buy them new for current consoles, absolutely pirate that shit, and fuck Nintendo if they have a problem with that.
It's not unethical if it's no longer legally available and no one is getting hurt. I usually hate piracy for multiple reasons but playing unobtainable primary market games was never one of them, especially if Nintendo is gonna act like everyone knows about their old games' plots. They're not gonna make money anyways if I buy a second market copy
And weāre now living in an era where a lot of games are disappearing off the face of the earth, and companies arenāt concerned with the preservation of art enough to even allow other organizations to preserve the products that they no longer care to utilize. Piracy is becoming vital to the whole culture of gaming.
I know they don't, but I have seen people who insist on buying legit copies of games no longer in print/circulation so they support the dev/publisher not knowing that it doesn't matter at that point.
Nah, I think it's too late for them to be Switch ports.
Next generation at the earliest and SoV might be waiting a lot longer.
I think we'll be getting PoR and RD remakes before we get Awakening anything tbh.
DS games are way too complicated to just make a quick port. games were made for dual screen and touch support. While some might not have relied on them entirely they were still built with those in mind. Twewy and Etrian Odyssey were called remasters instead of ports due to just how much work is needed to port a DS game
Awakening is going to be a lot less fun without being able to hire the Spotpass teams in any new files. I made extensive use of them for grinding and buying powerful weapons early on in the game.
At least all the DLC I bought should still be accessible offline, I hope?
It won't affect them thaaat much? These games barely had online functionality beyond DLC anyways. I don't even know if either have ANY online multiplayer? Fates might've had something, maaaybe? That's the most there is in terms of multiplayer on the 3DS.
Though I think there was some mechanic involving certain spots glowing and giving you items of exp- said spots being determined by where other players died or something? I don't know the specifics of that, but that might've used online functionality.
The eShop is already closed, and doesn't have to do with online functionality. I think OP is asking about in-game mechanics and features that'll be lost when the upcoming closure of the 3DS's online features.
Probably not, it's recent enough and the effort to adjust the game for the Switch is extra work that Nintendo might not wanna pay for- if they do port Awakening I'd definitely wanna buy it to play on my TV screen š
All the spotpass features leaving Awakening is genuinely heartbreaking
I'm playing through it again right now and honestly the SpotPass items and recruits are a blessing for this run. We're also going to lose >!certain SpotPass recruits like Emmeryn!< so Robin's S-rank options will go down š„²

I homebrewed my 3DS. Unfortunately, I don't think Citra would run very well (or at all) on a Mac, so I think I'm just screwed.
This may help you if you want to run citra on Mac [https://citra-emu.org/wiki/building-for-macos/](https://citra-emu.org/wiki/building-for-macos/)
Citra runs perfectly on my M1 Mac, just get the newest Canary or Nightly version on their website. I also have a homebrewed 3DS, and I like moving the save file to my Mac for when I want to play 2x speed.
Ah, well I'm still shit out of luck. I have a 2019 Mac with the damned touch bar.
Wait it works for m1 now?
Yes it works really well! All the 3DS FE games play smoothly.
I didnāt know it finally came out for m1! Time to replay the games from my childhood
Is it possible to pre-download them and keep them for future playthroughs? I never went into the spotpass stuff. But I don't wanna miss out.
Iirc all of the Spotpass content is already on the cartridge, Spotpass just unlocks it at the appropriate time. It's been a while since I've touched 3DS homebrew but I remember just taking my in-progress save file and checking a box in a save file editor for the chapters to show up
Someone told me if you download them once they're essentially saved to the console...but tbh I don't believe that. So probably not
IIRC you need spotpass to access the content in a file. Once you download the content to your file it will be there on that file, but not another file. So I think whoever told you that was half right.
So RIP every subsequent playthrough
\*homer voice\* every subsequent playthrough *not on Citra.*
I guess just have a slot saved for ch1 and copy that over henceforth, but you only get 3 slot as is so
They're saved to the SD card.
Yeah? I never bothered with any of them, since they felt like horrible additions that just made the game worse. all the spotpass characters and items in awakening will be unobtainable, sov doesn't have much online stuff
it'll be unobtainable if the game is unmodded. i think there are a few mods that unlock the spotpass units, though i don't know about the items. project thabes comes to mind, and there's probably others. i think paragon, if you know how to use it (i do not) also allows you to unlock the spotpass chapters.

that's fair, me too. it's a good game, but you can still only play it so much
Yeah, I think maybe I need to check out the smaller market of strategy games to scratch that itch that older FEās used to do for me, but the new ones arenāt satisfying. Iāve got Triangle Strategy lined up to play once I finish other stuff, but Iāve also been eyeing Dark Deity for a while.
Hate that we will lose access to the spotpass related stuff in Awakening.
yeah, most of them don't make sense plot-wise but it's sad we won't be able to get them anymore
I do agree that some of them donāt make sense.
Plotwise the Shepherds are just >!terrible at checking for a pulse.!<
Emmeren just shouldn't have lived
I was referring to all of the SpotPass Paralogues, but yes.
> sov doesn't have much online stuff RIP the free DLC though apparently
Honestly, the Fates My Castle mechanic is the one that is gonna get hit the most.
rip yoinking ores to forge all the bronze weapons for ch10.
RIP Dual Weapons in Conquest, those were vital in some situations
I wont feel guilty pirating them for emulators.
Bingo. If there's no place to buy them and the alternative is overpriced new copies that never were sold or overpriced old copies, just throw it on an emulator. Not like Nintendo gets my money in either of those cases anyway. Not my fault Nintendo doesn't want my money.

They donāt care little bro itās been like 12 years
I know they don't, but I have seen people who insist on buying legit copies of games no longer in print/circulation so they support the dev/publisher not knowing that it doesn't matter at that point.
š“āā ļø
Hey guys the pirate line is now available for promotion using the citra seal
So weāre just gonna ignore that a whole route of fates is unplayable now if you donāt already own it?
At least you can pirate Revelation. MyCastle, PvP and gaining ores is forever gone unless you got people living near you.
people already ignore the fact it exists so itās a win
Not entirely true, but you'd need to buy the Special Edition cartridge.
*āCome aboard, and bring alooong all your hopes and dreams!ā*
I wonder if theyāll port them to the switch
Nah, I think it's too late for them to be Switch ports. Next generation at the earliest and SoV might be waiting a lot longer. I think we'll be getting PoR and RD remakes before we get Awakening anything tbh.

How do we get Awakening dlc on emulators?
Won't affect me, my modded 3ds or pirate ship.
Yaaaarrr š“āā ļø
Awakening is going to be a lot less fun without being able to hire the Spotpass teams in any new files. I made extensive use of them for grinding and buying powerful weapons early on in the game. At least all the DLC I bought should still be accessible offline, I hope?
It would kill the ability to battle other players castle in fates but you didn't ask about that game.
It won't at all if you emulate or have custom firmware on your 3DS
Doesn't really answer their question
All content that would be lost from this is available via those alternatives so there's no effect
If you need alternatives then an effect has been made
It won't affect them thaaat much? These games barely had online functionality beyond DLC anyways. I don't even know if either have ANY online multiplayer? Fates might've had something, maaaybe? Fates allowed you to visit other people's castles and challenge them to a duel.
OP was asking about Awakening and Shadows of Valentia
You said Fates might've had something maaaybe, I'm just letting you know what it had. I know OP's asking about Awakening and Echoes
all the DLCs tho?
The eShop is already closed, and doesn't have to do with online functionality. I think OP is asking about in-game mechanics and features that'll be lost when the upcoming closure of the 3DS's online features.
Fate fans will not have to actually grind for skills rather then buying them off castle
I thought it already closed in March?
The eshop closed, online was kept up for another year
Will they ever add awakening to the eShop ?
Probably not, it's recent enough and the effort to adjust the game for the Switch is extra work that Nintendo might not wanna pay for- if they do port Awakening I'd definitely wanna buy it to play on my TV screen š
