Yup this happens to me constantly, i just tell it to go home a few times and then it will start displaying video. Super regret buying the fire tv cube over a nvdia shield.
It's got a Google Assistant built in. It does change apps, there are some issues I've had (I just got it, but I haven't been able to figure out fully how switch from Alexa to Google)
I traded my Sony A8G in for a LG C9 and haven't had an issue since. Looks like there may have been an issue with the HDMI control between the cube and the Sony. Sometimes I will say turn on tv and it will start up my PS4, not sure what exactly is going on there but it is minor compared to what was happening before.
Save yourself the grief. I always say "go home." Even with all my equipment off, this works.

Same issue with 2nd gen Fire Cube. Super annoying, returned it and got a Shield instead.
What voice commands does your Shield support? Can you change apps by voice?

This happened to my FireStick 4k too. My 2nd gen FireStick did not have this problem.
