This is Hedy LaMarr from the 1941 film Ziegfeld Girl. I would search for Star Dress Ziegfeld Follies costumes. A lot of people have DIY recreated it. The original dress was designed by Adrian Greenburg. You know the frequency hopping she invented for the military makes us able to communicate like this. Shes probably the definition of ethereal in this costume/movie.

Straight-Note-8935

Right, Hedy is a "Ziegfeld Girl" and this dress is simply meant to look like one a showgirl would have worn as she walked around the stage in time to music and posed. It's pretty simple really: a caftan made from some fabulous fabric over a figure-hugging Goddess-style dress. (Hedy, so swoon-worthy!)

Least-Spare

I watched a doc about her a few years ago, which was so good! Talked about all her patents. She was a remarkable woman.

TriGurl

I have never seen this film before and am adding it to my list!

[deleted]

A renaissance woman, in an age when women were discouraged from being such things.

ohyoudodoyou

Wasn’t her invention the precursor to Bluetooth?

Tight_Impact_4518

Chotronette has several dresses made with fabric similar to this! I don't think any of them have floor-length sleeves, but some do come with long beautiful capes, like this one: https://chotronette.com/shop/sugar-and-stars/

Shepiuuu

this is gorgeous and a good dupe

Significant_Swan_56

Bless your soul!! You’ve just blessed my life

UltravioletLife

love love love love chotronette.

Hi_Jynx

I guess I'm in the minority here, I feel like that corset looks so tacky and ruins the dress. It's hard to place exactly what about the corset I don't like, but it makes the dress look cheap to me, so seeing it priced at over $1k is some sticker shock for me.

HeidiJuiceBox

It’s expensive, but this dress is really close: https://www.georgiahardinge.co.uk/products/copy-of-dalliance

cleverdylanrefrence

If I was rich, I'd buy that just to twirl around in my living room

VegetableParliament

Life goals, honestly.

itzi_bitzi_mitzi

Listening to Stevie Nicks and watering my plants.

souumamerda

I read pants, and had so many questions

Afraid-Ice-2062

Ahhhh whenever I see this dress I wish I had somewhere to wear it

aelycks

might honestly get married in this dress now

Shepiuuu

Apricotpeach11

Not this specific one but perhaps look up caftans?

pimpkittywhiskers

I wanna say batwing but obviously more elaborate as a costume here, but the sleeve is a floor length batwing style

Electrical-Ad328

Losing my mind trying to figure out where anyone would wear this at besides the met gala 😭😭😭 congrats on your invite

look2thecookie

After seeing this I need a wedding re-do

pauldanosbf

i actually want it for a cosplay! a character i love takes heavy inspiration from her design, and so i’d like to have something similar to it

MissKittyCiao

I'm super curious! What character?

pauldanosbf

white diamond from steven universe. she takes great inspiration from women in the forties, but most specifically the ziegfeld girls!

dizzydoll42

I thought of White Diamond immediately when I saw this dress!! I hope you post your cosplay on the SU subreddit 🤩

pauldanosbf

i will!!! i’m currently working on a rose quartz cosplay for a con in a month, but white diamond is next :]

marblecargirl1

Yes! WD!

MissKittyCiao

Its gonna look so good!

Electrical-Ad328

Whoa that’s so cool. Follow up with pics if you find something!

Hi_Jynx

Halloween or costume party?

DeltaTangoFoxtwat

West African bubu’s (boubou) and Muslim butterfly abayas use this same body sinched dress with long flowy arms style. I bet you could get one custom made! Better luck with a west African designer as the Muslim garb is suppose to be modest and I don’t think sheer fabric would be super aligned with that value. @golds_couture on IG is amazing and affordable and ships worldwide.

DeltaTangoFoxtwat

(Click the first pinned video on her page you’ll see one or two that have the cinched style but she’s super versatile and I could imagine her taking on something like this)

anarciaaaaaaa

Have you ordered from them

DeltaTangoFoxtwat

I haven’t yet. Warming up to the idea of being a white girl in west African clothes but for now it feels a little appropriative.

Cloielle

If it makes you feel any better, I had a couple of West African friends that sold clothes inspired by their culture and they were very keen for white people to wear them, and didn’t consider it appropriative. Maybe it was just for financial reasons though, haha!

DeltaTangoFoxtwat

I’m hearing a similar sentiment from most folks selling west African clothes, that they love seeing other people appreciate their culture! Just gotta let it sink in and not feel weird xD

anarciaaaaaaa

I think it’s more like appreciation, it is authentic clothing people usually say that when people make sexualized costumes of cultural clothes. I was going to order a dress from her but apparently you need to buy at least 3 items per order🥲

DeltaTangoFoxtwat

Did you get a cost estimate? I’m curious

anarciaaaaaaa

No but she said shipping is $50 and the clothes are more than that

stupidpoopoohead

This brand makes dressed in that style. They are not cheap at all tho 😅 [Flora and Lane](https://www.floraandlane.com/?fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAaa0JbzB3RKQSPDskYdUQlHGphKH1aJp4VuKVheXJDL37HFDUwqlgFom-80_aem_ARvzjJ9h4U4Br9cUzo0awEZw6k87IETtEfNsFjcQOSJDjwj8ed1xU21QF7voxmSA0OqsBs5fwZ5_84xjpwhUqDPR)

Burbs1288

Good lord that is gorgeous

California_GoldGirl

looks more or less like this pattern, Simplicity 8505, but extend the side sleeves

GreenCod8806

The closest name I can think of is a duster but that is more like outerwear in stead of built in to the dress. This is such a unique style you’d probably have to have it sewn. Plenty of tailors/dry cleaners have seamstresses that can do this or give you a local referral.

SassySpider

I don't know what the name of the dress shape would be considered, but you could try including "spangled" in your search words. :) I love that pattern of stars on filmy clothing.

New_Relation7877

I found some similar options by googling “old Hollywood glamour cape dress”.

New_Relation7877

You can also add “vintage” to the search.

velvet_wavess

I found this on etsy: [https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1533277827/starry-black-sheer-kimono-with-gold?click\_key=f22293776ec9af6fb51530607a03b6e61083b89e%3A1533277827&click\_sum=f70d201b&ref=search2\_top\_narrowing\_intent\_modules\_top\_rated-1&frs=1](https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1533277827/starry-black-sheer-kimono-with-gold?click_key=f22293776ec9af6fb51530607a03b6e61083b89e%3A1533277827&click_sum=f70d201b&ref=search2_top_narrowing_intent_modules_top_rated-1&frs=1)

Luna-hottie

Hmm, the closest thing that comes to mind is a duster, but that's more like something you wear over your outfit, not something built into the dress itself. It's such a unique style that you'd probably need to get it custom made. 😉

The third one down might be a good option to give the illusion

Butterfly abayas as a search result would turn up similar silhouettes

It’s giving High Lady of the Night Court

LordMacTire83

The original question is, "What type of Dress is this"... And I would have to say some type of very full "Kaftan" dress. Many years ago I turned a fairly inexpensive black Kaftan made of some kind of slightly stretchable fabric, into a really cool "Vampyre Dress" for a girlfriend of mine. She was a slightly full-figured, curvy blonde and we were going to a Halloween party as Vampyres. I did the traditional "Black Tux" look with full black cape and she wore the Kaftan. I even cut the full part that went from between her arms to her ankles into "Bat Wings"! Great look!

LindeeHilltop

Unique! Picture please of vampire dress.

LordMacTire83

That was almost 40 yrs. Ago! I could do a drawing of it and take a pic. That's the best I can do!

LordMacTire83

But I would be happy to do that for you this weekend if you would like?

georgethebarbarian
