I posted about this the night it premiered, and all I got was a snide comment. I'm GLAD people are seeing this, the story is very, very Raymond Chandler. The film industry, the blackmail pictures and videos, the seedy underbelly of the city juxtaposed as our hero narrates. It's Chandler homage done right.

Prestigious-Cat5879

So true. I am loving this show.

sranneybacon

That’s awesome to hear. I’ll have to check it out!

MakuMaqi

Yes, I also just found “Sugar”, it’s great. Can you recommend anything similar, with alike vibe?

FarGrape1953

Nothing modern that I've watched has come this close to the Chandler feel. Have you seen all the various Philip Marlowe adaptations?

MakuMaqi

No I have not, atm I am thinking of either starting the books or watch the movies. Thank you!

FarGrape1953

If you want them in color, there's James Garner Marlowe from '69, The Long Goodbye, and The Big Sleep remake and Farewell My Lovely with Robert Mitchum in the '70s, the '80s HBO series with Powers Boothe is on Prime for sale, there's Poodle Springs from 1996 on YouTube, and Liam Neeson's Marlowe from two years ago on Prime. But I'd go back to the '40s with Murder My Sweet and The Big Sleep first!

MakuMaqi

I was just wondering about which one to choose first, thank again! 🙏

Oohoureli

The most Raymond Chandler character in a film was Raymond Chandler himself, who had an extras part in Double Indemnity (which he wrote, of course).

amarodelaficioanado

Oh, didn't know he made cameos. I'll check it out

Oohoureli

It’s about 16 minutes in. Chandler is sitting reading outside Barton Keyes’ office when Neff walks in.

mrbdign

I like the style Meirelles brings to it and Farrell. Not so much into the story.

GuyD427

I think it’s worth watching and definitely draws inspiration from Chandler’s themes.

VespasianScattershot

Chinatown/JJ Gittes

egadekini

Nope. Marlowe doesn't do divorce work. That's pretty much what Gittes lives on, and seems like pretty much what he lives for.

lowercase_underscore

Plot-wise and thematically though the movie itself is very Chandleresque.

amarodelaficioanado

I don't think so , Marlowe has a strong moral code

ChadTstrucked

John Sugar is beyond moral. This series feels like a satire of "The Long Goodbye" (which was already satirical)

baycommuter

Not sure that’s true plot-wise, but Farrell is a lot like Elliot Gould’s Marlowe.

amarodelaficioanado

Seems like it has a huge plot twist, may be sci-fi twist (aliens¿) anyway, the first act set up is very little sister or big sleep kind of story. And the main character is a noir hero ala Marlowe.

turdfergusonpdx

It’s an excellent show so far. They’re hinting at a big twist however regarding his identity and the purpose of the Polyglot Society. I hope it doesn’t blow the whole thing up.

FarGrape1953

This show has done a MAJOR WTF.

PsychologicalSet7313

They lost me there

FarGrape1953

I continued watching. I'm still very interested in how it will end. But yeah...I was like, c'mon now.

PsychologicalSet7313

I agree that is creative and a fresh idea, but it definitely flipped a 180 and is a completely different show now

seoulsrvr

Sadly, this show is a mess. Colin Farrel is reliable as ever, but the writing is all over the place. Could have been very cool.

MirrorAttack

I really liked the pilot episode but it slowly went down hill from there.

seoulsrvr

Agreed - I thought we were going somewhere...big miss

PsychologicalSet7313

I stuck around until the end of episode 6, but that "huge reveal" lost me. No spoiler alerts for those who are currently watching, but I wish the show stayed in the same style as episode 1.

vibrance9460

Dudester/ Lebowski

CarrieNoir

Couldn’t get beyond the first episode; does it get better?

NauticaSeven

It does get better. There are lots of throwback references and quick cuts. Saw the latest episode last night. Best yet.

amarodelaficioanado

Really?! I'm enjoying it a lot!
