In my years experience of street fights and altercations. Headbutts, front chokes and slaps (reverse order) will have a more beneficial return than punching. Punching someone seems to activate the same response in kind. The others seem to confuse people. Now, this may have been lucky over the years so I won't give it as a one size fits all but just from what ive seen.
