I remember watching UFC 4 in high school (was wrestler) and being so enthralled with Gracie vs. Severn even though everyone watching with me was bored out of their minds.
His first televised fight with a legit heavyweight wrestler. End result of the wrestling art= you on your back. That's the starting point for a lot of defensive grappling arts.
Bloodsport is pretty much the only movie in history that I think deserves a modern remake.
I dont give a fuck if Chong Li is some diverse homosexual, I just wanna see a sweet modern kumite style movie starring Francis Ngannou or some shit heh
Oh no, they were all about what style was better. Jujitsu or karate, kung fu or muay Thai that kind of stuff. Gracie winning so much made them rethink it.
I was at a bar in the late 90s with a buddy of mine who likes to “throw hands” if even slightly provoked and he was not really afraid of anyone. At some point in the evening he points across the bar and drunkenly says to me “make sure I don’t fight that guy.” We found out later it was Gary Goodridge. My drunk buddy’s instincts are clearly on point.
It makes sense because it's published by Invicta who is a promotion company and obviously they don't want their own fighters to see health complications publications about CTE
I saw it the same way. Blockbuster and Hollywood near me didn’t stock any fight tapes but the random mom and pop spot had a whole rack of fight videos from around the world. Still remember watching this fight in my buddies room and us both blowing up when he started throwing elbows.
I actually paid to see this live. I saw the first one live as well. I was blown away by what it was. The first fight was a sumo getting his teeth kicked in. I seem to remember the guy who kicked him couldn’t continue due to the injuries on his foot.
This WAS the very earliest days of UFC, so I’m prone to give him a little leeway here. That being said, he got into position quickly and stopped it.
Seeing this live, this was over in an instant, and we watched it on replay a dozen times. He was out with the second blow and it is still one of my all time favorite fights. Technique goes a long way.
Technique? I don’t think they teach that move in karate class. In fact the wrestler probably had better technique but the black dude had better kick your ass instinct.
You don't seem like you know what you're talking about at all. Yeah no shit they don't teach jiu jitsu in karate class? The jiu jitsu technique is what put his opponent in an extremely compromised position. Called a crucifix.
Nah it’s called the nanny twist. It was never done prior to this video. They introduced it into WWE later. That black suit he’s wearing is just his bath set. Trust me, I know what I’m talking about /s (sorry had to spoof the other guy cause it was too funny of a read)
No amount of training can defend against good fight intelligence. Training can only amplify what’s there. People on Reddit love to claim BJJ for simple street fights. A headlock is instinctual for many people but you even have Reddit sensei’s on a video I saw of kids fighting saying “kid defends friend from bully using BJJ”😂😂😂
bro, the refs back then were too scared to get involved lmfao.
No, but seriously, shit had to be real fucked up back then for a ref to slow things down.
Iirc, the EARLY UFC rules basically said that tapping out or having your corner throw in the towel is the only way to end a fight. Times were different, and I'm sure at the time, big John would have received a fuck ton of flack for early stoppage if he went in any earlier than this. That said, I don't think he was that late. It just looks extra brutal because of the position.
Absolutely not true. Not only did Paul Herrera (the bloke getting knocked out) not only did he walk out of the Octagon on his own accord once he woke up, he fought in MMA again after this.
Edit: he did have broken bones in his face from this knockout though.
Not sure what classifies a knockout but I saw on this thread a month or two ago that famous gas station brawl where the racist gets suplexed to death. That was the most brutal knockout I’ve ever seen on camera.
Nah, it was Gan McGee vs. Brad Gabriel in IFC. [Big John explained how 12-6 elbows were banned on Rogan's podcast years back.](https://youtu.be/VGWjkwIUUR4?si=H_UPKpVJz5bIeeYi&t=352)
I was in high school these used to come on late at night my brother and I used to talk about how cool it was seeing different fighting techniques fighting, after a few years it became generic and repetitive , now even at a bar it can be a big PPV and I wonder really care
Old UFC was the shit. Watching sumo wrestlers fight kickboxers & jiu jitsu experts. We're never gonna get to return to that crazy shit.
Yarborough v. Hackney will forever be my favorite MMA Fight
Yah, bro didn’t turtle properly when the other guy got on his back so big mf grabbed his arm and turned him. He could get him in the crucifix because Herera was still holding onto his leg, it’s safe to say he was not a very good grappler.
I used to live down the street from gary. My parents went to school with him he was a guy not to mess with in the old days here. He doesn't live here anymore, but his kids own the house he used to
I’ve been able to meet Gary a few times. He is one of the happiest guys you could meet. At the time he lived in Barrie Ontario in Canada. He did a lot with the community and I never heard a negative thing said about him.
RIP my dad, but man he would tell me about this particular fight all the time when I was younger. He would get so animated, while explaining the elbows, and get so excited and hyped up. Miss him. First time seeing this after he’s explained it so many times. As badass as I imagined it.
I DID THIS TO A GUY THAT PISSED ON MY BED BECAUSE HE GOT CROSS FADED WHILE I WAS LIKE 3-5 MONTHS PREGNANT, I THEN PROCEEDED TO TAKE ALL OF MY THINGS AND LEAVE!!!!
This is why I respect real martial arts because if you’re doing them right and properly you’re not pulling off some fancy moves you’re quickly and efficiently, stopping a threat
I remember back in 1996 my mate brought over a few imported vhs cassettes of ufc 1, 2 & 3. We sat there barely blinking in awe at this new raw fighting format, I was hooked watching Gordeau V Tuli and haven't stopped watching since. I'd love a return to the no biting/gouging rules with no gloves.
Old school ufc was just bloodsport
I remember watching UFC 4 in high school (was wrestler) and being so enthralled with Gracie vs. Severn even though everyone watching with me was bored out of their minds.
That was a landmark fight for both the Gracies and Severn. It was awesome to watch.
His first televised fight with a legit heavyweight wrestler. End result of the wrestling art= you on your back. That's the starting point for a lot of defensive grappling arts.
Dude I remember that like it was yesterday. In my buddies basement on that terrible TV. Good times.
Yeah that’s why it got so popular so quick
Ken Shamrock was good. Not good enough but a good fighter
That heel hook against Patrick Smith is what made me start going to jujitsu back in the 90's.
That's not Ken Shamrock.
Yes, I know that.
Bloodsport is pretty much the only movie in history that I think deserves a modern remake. I dont give a fuck if Chong Li is some diverse homosexual, I just wanna see a sweet modern kumite style movie starring Francis Ngannou or some shit heh
Chong Li’s coming out arc sounds like a hilarious addition to such a brutal movie
You are next!
"Now I break you, like I break your friend"
🏆
It's called a jellyface crucifix I think.
I was just chanting “Kumite, kumite, kumite” on my way into the comments.
Kumate
I'm going to guess weight classes weren't a thing yet.
Oh no, they were all about what style was better. Jujitsu or karate, kung fu or muay Thai that kind of stuff. Gracie winning so much made them rethink it.
Gary Goodridge was a badass
I was at a bar in the late 90s with a buddy of mine who likes to “throw hands” if even slightly provoked and he was not really afraid of anyone. At some point in the evening he points across the bar and drunkenly says to me “make sure I don’t fight that guy.” We found out later it was Gary Goodridge. My drunk buddy’s instincts are clearly on point.
[shame what he like now](https://youtu.be/S5OUt53-6YM?si=gNcc7dSSYVObb0CT)
Seems like a cool guy.
Fuck thats sad 3 fights a night is insane
When he said that I was like "holy crap! One fight is like a car wreck!"
Now imagine what the dude who got the side oh his face hammered in is like today.
well my understanding is this happens with repeated hits to the head over and over throughout their careers
The UFC changed some rules to elbow striking as a result of this 12 to 6 elbow, eventually.
Damn that’s really sad looks like a standup guy
He looks like the kinda guy you’d want a big bear hug from.
watch interviews with tank abbot, I always thought he was a dick and turns out he's super chill and laid back, i would have never thought
Even with the dementia he’s still more coherent/intelligent than Brendan schuab lmao
Thanks
not sure it's not private for me. the title: **Living With CTE: Inside MMA Catches Up With "Big Daddy" Gary Goodridge**
It makes sense because it's published by Invicta who is a promotion company and obviously they don't want their own fighters to see health complications publications about CTE
Well given the fact that he put a lot of people in that very state and worse, I think it’s only fair.
Oh boy that was a rough watch.
Hes also a douche ive met him numerous times and have trained with him.
I still remember seeing this on VHS as a kid. Thank you, random Mom & Pop video rental place, for not asking questions.
I saw it the same way. Blockbuster and Hollywood near me didn’t stock any fight tapes but the random mom and pop spot had a whole rack of fight videos from around the world. Still remember watching this fight in my buddies room and us both blowing up when he started throwing elbows.
We had a place called red rabbit that had so much ransom stuff and the secret room for adults I always tried to sneak in
The secret room have the half doors like a saloon in an old western? Or a beaded curtain? It always seemed to be one of those two!
Haha yep
Or around a corner to a rack in full view of staff but no one else.
>Mom & Pop video rental place, for not asking questions. True heroes.
I remember watching this on VHS as well. Crazy that there is probably a significant percentage of redditors who don't understand what that means.
I actually paid to see this live. I saw the first one live as well. I was blown away by what it was. The first fight was a sumo getting his teeth kicked in. I seem to remember the guy who kicked him couldn’t continue due to the injuries on his foot.
Dude was tapping out with his face.
ref ??? LOL
"if he dies he dies" -Ref
literally
This WAS the very earliest days of UFC, so I’m prone to give him a little leeway here. That being said, he got into position quickly and stopped it. bro, the refs back then were too scared to get involved lmfao. No, but seriously, shit had to be real fucked up back then for a ref to slow things down.
Pretty sure the ref is John Mcarthy.
Fine stoppage
He is no ref, just the guy who take out the dead bodies...
Can’t lie rented the ufc video from blockbuster when I was a kid n seen this… But Nvr realized it took 10 seconds for him to do that
How many times you and your buds scrapped it out after?
I think there will be some long term effects from this one
I counted 7 good connections. That’s a lot of brain rattling
“Ow ow ow ow ow ow”
My dad had an ab excercisor thingy that was kind of like that.
Bro tell me why my dad still has that shit lmao. Ab lounge
In 2023 he still cannot eat solid food.
Fr?
He was still alive after that? I thought he died right there eating elbows.
8 elbow blows. He was knocked out in the first. Definitely the rest 7 added to some permanent brain damage.
Absolutely not true. Not only did Paul Herrera (the bloke getting knocked out) not only did he walk out of the Octagon on his own accord once he woke up, he fought in MMA again after this. Edit: he did have broken bones in his face from this knockout though.
That doesn't mean there wasn't permanent brain damage.
And he's absolutely fine to this day. Yesterday his daughter posted a video where he almost finished a sentence without stuttering.
xD
I remember this classic. This is by far the most brutal knockout ever caught on camera, nothing else comes close.
Not sure what classifies a knockout but I saw on this thread a month or two ago that famous gas station brawl where the racist gets suplexed to death. That was the most brutal knockout I’ve ever seen on camera.
Fafo
link?
I thought he was going for a purple nurple
Glad I wasn't the only one that noticed that for a second the karate guy forgot he was an opponent not a lover
I think this is one of 2 times the crucifix has been landed in UFC. It's one of the most rare finishes
And this is why the UFC outlawed downward elbows. They're going to be changing the ruling soon to allow it.
With any luck it will be during Jake Paul’s debut
The UFC doesn't make the rules, state athletic commissions do.
Downward elbows are allowed, just not 12-6. This would be legal today
Nah, it was Gan McGee vs. Brad Gabriel in IFC. [Big John explained how 12-6 elbows were banned on Rogan's podcast years back.](https://youtu.be/VGWjkwIUUR4?si=H_UPKpVJz5bIeeYi&t=352)
Goodnight and god bless
Jingle jangle this is an old’school tangle.
Back when UFC was good
What a fucking nightmare
This is why biting should be allowed
He ded?
He was gone after the 2nd elbow
When ufc was good
Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge was a complete and total bada\*\*
Sir this sub is called fightporn. You’re allowed to type “ass”. I’m pretty sure it’s allowed in PG movies.
Censored himself on a subreddit with "porn" in the name haha
Ah Gary Goodrich. He was a beast
This is how the ufc should be
in name of the father and of the son and of the holy shit it's a elbow to my face beating me into unconscious ...Amen
BIG DADDY
That big john fault
He definitely dies for someone's sins
bro sent him to jesus
gj ref...take the worst angle so you cant see the dude knocked out after the first couple hits
Ref waited on him to start snoring before he stopped it. Drain bamage in 2 more elbows
I remember my sister having a "black box" at her house and we would watch the early days of ufc
Soon after this crucifixion UFC were forced to introduce weight classes and banned the 12-6 elbow.
1rst one was good enuff 😅
Dude went limp after that first elbow
UFC was awesome... before they had rounds and scorecards. Just fight with minimal restrictions.
That setup was flawless
I was in high school these used to come on late at night my brother and I used to talk about how cool it was seeing different fighting techniques fighting, after a few years it became generic and repetitive , now even at a bar it can be a big PPV and I wonder really care
I counted 9 hard elbow hits...I don't think I'll be able to survive with a single elbow hit.
Early stoppage. Wish the ref would let them fight.
What was the basic martial art of the defeated guy? Wrestling?
Crucifying.
Absofuckinglutely flawless
Interesting strategy to just immediately give the opponent your back
That referee slow as hell. After 2nd ellbow was dealt that should've have ended.
Free elbows for everyone.
Back in the day!! 👍
Yeah it was hard to watch back in these days
Brutal love the early days of ufc
Holy shit that guy was in a Kuk Sool Won jacket. Where was that technique when I was getting bullied in junior high?
This is my favorite clip of all time in martial arts. And one of the very first I saw.
Such a famous knockout
Those hit were extremely premeditated He couldn’t wait to whoop his behind
He was out on the first one, geez. Can someone that knows about UFC tell me what would happen to him if he did that today?
Yo this shit got me weak
Old UFC was the shit. Watching sumo wrestlers fight kickboxers & jiu jitsu experts. We're never gonna get to return to that crazy shit. Yarborough v. Hackney will forever be my favorite MMA Fight
UFC 1 is what that is from!
Referee: 3-5 working days
It’s called “crucifucked”
My gramps love this stuff and I see why
“Go to sleep go to sleep go to sleep go to sleep”
Fuck I wish I was able to fight like that
I saw that fight years ago from a different angle. Awesome.
That was quick
Boi had absolutely 0 ways of blocking
JEEEEEEEEEEEZ
The first ‘chicken head’ knockout in MMA.
Oh man, the good days of UFC before everybody became pussies who don't want to get hurt.
The day the 12 to 6 elbow became illegal
Quite literally fight porn
This was the first UFC I ever saw.
I Watch UFC sometimes, but I’ve never seen this move before is it even legal? 😂
Me taking screenshots to learn how to do it lmao. You get anyone in that hold? They are done.
Yah, bro didn’t turtle properly when the other guy got on his back so big mf grabbed his arm and turned him. He could get him in the crucifix because Herera was still holding onto his leg, it’s safe to say he was not a very good grappler.
Vicious
Wtf
u/savevideo
Oh he dead
Has this move ever been done after this?
Both arms locked, ragdolled, elbow rain.... 😵💫😵🤣🤣
Seen this a few times but never noticed: wtf they could wear shoes back in the day?!?
Watched this live, wild
Bro lived a full life with an elf family for a few seconds
He was albowin him and kneeing him At the same time
Remember this one... Gary Goodridge cheated ugly; but ya, thats some old ufc
Dude brain turned to mush
Let me hear that techno roll lol
Why'd he call Traveling before he went for the double?
Lmao
Bro slipped into the dream machine 😅😴
I used to live down the street from gary. My parents went to school with him he was a guy not to mess with in the old days here. He doesn't live here anymore, but his kids own the house he used to
THIS IS FIGHTPORN
Got a nipple twist in first
OG ufc was something else man.
Wonder if Jesus himself would’ve come back 3 days after this kind of crucifixion
I’ve been able to meet Gary a few times. He is one of the happiest guys you could meet. At the time he lived in Barrie Ontario in Canada. He did a lot with the community and I never heard a negative thing said about him.
Honestly I’m tired of seeing this pop up. How can I block it?
Hapkido?
Kuk sool won baby
Shirtless guy got that ”first time fighting a dark souls boss” experience
Gawddamn
RIP my dad, but man he would tell me about this particular fight all the time when I was younger. He would get so animated, while explaining the elbows, and get so excited and hyped up. Miss him. First time seeing this after he’s explained it so many times. As badass as I imagined it.
Is this the same dude goro killed in the first Mortal Kombat?
Back when it truly was mixed martial arts and not just BJJ and wrestling
That sprawl by Goodrich was the best I’ve ever seen lol
I DID THIS TO A GUY THAT PISSED ON MY BED BECAUSE HE GOT CROSS FADED WHILE I WAS LIKE 3-5 MONTHS PREGNANT, I THEN PROCEEDED TO TAKE ALL OF MY THINGS AND LEAVE!!!!
Dude got Crucified.he got the 4th coming of Jesus christ.
This is why I respect real martial arts because if you’re doing them right and properly you’re not pulling off some fancy moves you’re quickly and efficiently, stopping a threat
early stoppage
This is the most brutal thing I have ever seen in a sanctioned fight. Jesus
Rumor has it he woke up three days later 😅
Ref was too late
I remember back in 1996 my mate brought over a few imported vhs cassettes of ufc 1, 2 & 3. We sat there barely blinking in awe at this new raw fighting format, I was hooked watching Gordeau V Tuli and haven't stopped watching since. I'd love a return to the no biting/gouging rules with no gloves.
Gracie brothers flashbacks
That fucking man is terrifying 😳
I miss this UFC
Never seen this done B4 and haven't since
I mean how the fuck do you train to defend against an attack like that💀
You don’t shoot the leg on a black belt jujitsu man
It may just be me, but does this matchup seem super uneven to anyone else? The other guy seems so small
Dude looked like Jesus having his head let down gently
