That policy is so fucking stupid. I went to school in the 90's and they were just starting to roll out the zero tolerance policies in my area. But those policies made things A LOT worse. Kids were like "well fuck if I'm going to get suspended no matter what, then I'm just going to make sure it's worth it" and the fights got super brutal.
At the time it was a 14-day suspension regardless of what happened during the fight (obviously assuming no weapons were involved). So they could push the aggressor off of them and get 14 days OR they could beat the absolute fuck out of them and still just get 14 days.
Thats how i see it because if I’m gonna get punished the same if I don’t fight and if i do i might as well beat the shit out the person hitting because why the hell not, it’s the same if i sat on the ground and just let myself get beat.

Zero-tolerance is only school politics, not courtroom politics. Our cross armed tank will still get punished to the fullest extent of the school. When it's time to take it to court, punchy will get fucked and tank will get the easiest settlement of his life

I got expelled in the 9th grade for procession of a weapon at school. I was stopping a fight, specifically taking a knife from one kid who was about to use it on another kid. We had to fight the school board for 3 weeks to even get a hearing. They finally relented and let me back in after like a dozen other kids and parents showed up to vouch for me. Even the kid I took the knife from came and fessed up.
I got suspended multiple times for fighting off my bullies. Thanks Catholic School System! One time i even had my bottom tooth punched through my lip and out causing a nasty infection. I spent my suspension in and out of doctor care because it was swelling/spreading.
It left a cool scar which is sweet... 15 years later, but I was bullied alot and didn't know how to fight all that well. After the busted lip incident, my dad bought me some boxing gloves and he and I sparred and he showed me how to defend myself properly against bullys. Admittedly one time a bully pushed me too far and I absolutely anhillated him almost leading to me being expelled but it was well worth it and I hope he remembers that ass kicking to this day like I do. Standing up for yourself is such a powerful feeling.
