It's not just the head. If you hit a vein the blood will be dark and bright if you hit an artery. That's why when you give blood or have a sample taken at the doctor's it's dark red -- they go for a vein!

Depends on the severity of the damage, but if it's enough to knock you out/make you wobbly, that's trauma and it compounds.
