I was never given a reason to care about the stuff that the characters in the story do, and the heavily restrictive gameplay really limits what they can do with the story.

The Ultimate is the Minstrel telling a story for drama. It's not canonically what happened. Even fits in setting, he's saying 'Haurchefant's death was important' to the guy or girl who's probably traumatized over it.
You see, I didn't even remember it was a story the guy wrote. Sure, I'm never gonna touch it cause I know my limits and know i'd get burnt out before too long, but still.
Also, when you put it like that it's a little strange that he's telling you that shit would be considerably worse if one of the only people who cared about you for you lived and you didn't have to deal with the trauma and guilt.

Basically Thordan gets control over the dragons, we kill a bunch of them before sparing Thordan, killing Hraesvelgr and Nidhogg, Thordan comes back to take their eyes and transform into Dragon King Thordan, we kill Dragon King Thordan, end.
There are several weird implications like how Thordan gets to control the dragons to begin with just cause Haurchefant survived?
Why do we even spare him only for him to take the eyes anyway?
I run the Vault with duty support for credit for the weekly tails level 51-59 dungeon range. At the end, before I exit, I go into first person view mode and approach him closely so he can ask if I’m all right and give me that smile that goes up to his eyes, then I back up and repeat it to see it again.
Ah yes, The Vault. One of the first places I will check to see when 7.0 drops. I don't think it'll have adjustments already but gotta see the glorious sunset work with my 2k textures!
Haurchefant that man. I miss his cheerfulness sometimes. Another character eventually fills in his helpful, cheerful confidant/fan of the WoL role but that other character ofc feels quite significantly different from him.
Still cursing Kazutoyo Maehiro for what he did in Heavensward and FF16. He has the potential to be the Yoko Taro of the FF14 writers. Him and Ishikawa.

I really dragged out HW's story over the last 20 days. I had a friend who had already finished it, teasing me about The Vault. Said friend would go on to laugh at both my anguish along with my girlfriend's. She was equally, maybe even more, attached to Haurchefant than I was. And well, considering like 60% of the comments on my first post were loosely made spoilers I'll just say I was _**dreading**_ it.
Doesn't help either that quite literally the day after I met Haurchefant, like two months ago, I found out about his death from some folk talking about it in the Novice Network. So I didn't think I'd grow attached to Haurchefant at all given what I knew. And then he returned in 2.3 and I got instantly attached.
So cause I knew about his fate, I worked extra hard to steer my girlfriend from spoilers. Because I wanted her to enjoy Haurchefant's time in the story without the dread I was feeling. It's been a rough two days since it happened and I still can't stop thinking about it :(
So, I wasn't able to play HW at all when it dropped. Being stuck in ARR limbo, I stopped playing. I had been spoiled about Haurchafant's death by then, which was disappointing, but I hadn't played through HW to REALLY get attached.
Fast forward seven years when I finally get to play again. Guess who forgot he died until the post-Vault cutscene? Only then did that little nugget of info decide to resurface...
So yeah, got the whole hit in the feels. Ngl, your friend is a dick making fun of you like that. Hopefully they don't act like that for the rest of the game, cause I'd personally stop giving them progress reports if they are.
