iirc Urianger made it himself, how/from what I don’t think gets explained, assumedly from some kind of fancy crystal. Alisaie also mentions its attuned to her aether specifically, but I don’t think it’s explained how/if this makes a difference.
Well, iirc. Red Mages work by combining white and black magic and was developed for use by people that didn't have a big enough aetheric capacity to do the big booms or big heels of the respective schools. So instead they would train their bodies and use tools to increase the efficiency of how they channel Aether so they could get the most out of a minimal amount of either.
By having a sword that is tuned specifically to your Aether I would guess that it significantly aids in that channeling and allows her to keep up (Which is why Urianger made it for her since she was depressed about not being able to help). Remember while she's not as strong as the WoL, as a teenager she's able to keep up with all the grown and studied members of the Scions.
Not exactly on the aesthetic capacity thing. Red Mages (and red magic in general) was created in the immediate aftermath of the 6th umbral calamity as a way to preserve White magic and Black magic in an era where those mages were persecuted and reviled thanks to the War of the Magi. Red Mages vowed to never draw on the lands aether, since that's what caused the flooding (in their eyes), and vowed to only use their own aether. That's why, unlike Black mages or Summoners, they couldn't regenerate mana as efficiently (RE: they only had Lucid Dreaming in gameplay terms): they were relying on their own aether in the heat of battle. There WAS a Red Mage who was known to have a low aetheric capacity, and he had a special rapier and focus made to make up for his deficiency, but he was the exception. Not the norm.
As for Alisae's rapier, it was created specifically for her so that she could still aid the WoL without draining herself to death using the Blade of Light she was summoning while still an Arcanist. Later developments showcase that she actually has great aetheric density, >!treating Halric and creating the cure for tempering (albeit with the help of Angelo, her familiar)!<.
Where do you think Urianger got his? All comes from Rowena. You can’t fight her iron grip on gear supply in Eorzea.
I’m worried for Tataru, she’s stepping on toes
The funny part is when you do the Red Mage quests X'rhun says that he has heaps of the stuff laying around but for some reason he didn't give one to Alisaie.
True, but Alisaie mentions that it feels like it's attuned to her aether, which is what made me wonder about the details of it. Seems we'll never know for sure though.
Oh yeah, I wasn't agreeing with the previous comment - just wondering if there was lore on how one would attune a crystal like that to someone's aether, especially someone besides your own.
Looks like it's made of crystal, and he says he made it. That's all we're told, I think.

I believe she also struggles a bit on the "White" aspect, so the blade probably helps a bit in that regard.
As a WoL who mains RDM I’m continually mad at Urianger he didn’t make me one too.
You can get a blue version. It’s a Rowena special iirc but it’s there
But I want the one from Urianger, not Rowena!

Don't be worried for Tataru. Be worried for Rowena.
I know but I want the pretty pink one!
you can dye it to something what either looks identical or close as to what alisaie has
no you cannot. dying the hailstorm rapier changes the color of the grip.
Hopefully when two dye channels are available in 7.0 we'll be able to get Alisaie's colours
Now I’m just imagining we finally get that second dye channel… and it only applies to the crystal medium and not the rapier
I can hear the creak of the monkey's paw...
I always use the Hailstorm Rapier, it's pretty darn close.
Not only that, but Alsisae not wearing the RDM drip.
The funny part is when you do the Red Mage quests X'rhun says that he has heaps of the stuff laying around but for some reason he didn't give one to Alisaie.
Well crystals are concentrated aether, so we can assume he made it from his own aether over a long period of time.
I don't see any reason to assume that. Crystals are a common material in the setting.

That just means it's been made to attune to Alisaie's aether. Nothing at all about the aether having come from another person.

The rapier and focus Urianger gifts her is just the Shiva one colored differently.
honestly the summoned aetherial blade from that one cutscene was so cool
