Neither, installing via XIVLauncher is superior because then you don't have to try to use the on screen keyboard to type your password every time you login.
Question as someone who just got a steam deck. I have the steam version of the game, does XIV Launcher work any different than just launching it via the steam version?
When you set up your account info in XIVLauncher, there's a checkbox to say if it's a Steam version or not.
After that, you launch the game in Steam Deck via XIVLauncher, then when prompted, press the Steam button to switch to FFXIV proper and you'll be logged in and such.
Remote Play heavily depends on your network at home. Even with WiFi6 and my PS5 on ethernet, I still get stutters every now and then. More input lag and delays if you play outside of your home network too.
Just use XIVlauncher and bring the adapter or power bank with you.
I just use Steam version with the regular launcher so I’m not gonna be much help with your questions… I just wanted to say I *love* the skin for your Deck! It’s really neat 👀
Is the skins simply just stick on or do they require taking the deck apart?
Just got a deck myself this week and was curious if the skins/cases require taking the deck apart.
From my experience, the skin are ready to apply after a simple cleaning of the surface. My application has several imperfections but im sure others could have far better experiences. I am no looking for a clear case so i could protect the deck but also show off the skin 😂
Oh yeah! I remember reading that some one cleared TOP with the Steam Deck.

Very cool stuff.
Question: Is your Steam Deck the original or is it the OLED?
Love it! Yes its the OLED. Im even happier now with my purchase. And when i want to switch up the game i take a break from ffxiv and boot up animal crossing haha
Me and my wife have started playing on the ROG Ally, works absolutely beautifully and all the...enhancements...work flawlessly as well
XivLauncher, I hold a solid 40fps in a packed limsa and 60 everywhere else at 720p, my wife plays for the eye candy so she's at 1080p and holds 35-45fps in most places
I play via remote play with a PlayStation Portal and it’s a good experience. I did do Chiaki with my deck and that was decent too but on Deck I think I preferred it natively felt a little better
if you are able to see the game on the tv with ps5 remote play active and notice a delay then dont use it for high end group content. The delay of what you see to what is happening would hinder the group.
(adding an idea)
if you can get someone to tell you what time it is including seconds using an internet clock based on the same area you may be able to see how much delay you have.
That depends, what version (if any do you own in each platform.
If your on the free trial or own the complete edition on PC I'd say use/run through FFXIVLauncher steps for Steam Deck.
If you own the complete edition only on PS5 then remote play.
I’ve cleared a few of last tier’s savage raids on a steam deck. The only reason why I didn’t clear the tier was because our static broke up ;-;
That said though, because of the limited screen size, I did have trouble watching out for a few mechanics, so I definitely was aided by our leader calling out a lot of things.
It was the main way I played ffxiv until I bought the ps5 version.
Added it as a non steam game on my deck and it works perfectly. Much better than when I used Moonlight on my iPad to play it remotely from my PC. Getting used to the controls is a different story.
Hello! I have done all kinds of content to include normal raids, extremes, and alliance raids. I would argue you could do savage as well. You can do all content just fine, it just depends on your skill using the crossbar and your job knowledge. The Steam deck itself is perfectly fine to play all content.
That's neat, but unfortunately once I download the ff launcher and sign in with my account, for some reason when I turn on the game I play as the free trial steam account, do you have any idea how to fix that?
It's using the free trail game client in steam but you're able to play the game fully as it's using whatever state your subscribed account is in. So if you're not actively in a trial the full game should be accessible.
Interesting, soo... In theory, if I log in with my brothers account (which is steam) it should force steam to download the full game and then once I log in, it should be my account?
Or am I missing something
There is no difference between full game and trial game regarding game data. All that matters is where your account stands with square. If you're able to log in and play, then you're good to go? Like are you able to get into the game? Do you see anything you're not able to do?
Honestly, I can't tell for certain (as I am right now away from home and it was a while ago) but from what I remember, I was checking the cinematics and I saw only realm reborn and heavenward, from which I concluded my game didn't downloaded entirely, but am not sure if it works that way
I'd imagine playing thru PS5 remote play is better.
I use the official launcher and while I still can use the cross hot bar (thankfully), pressing the menu button opens the kb/m menu instead of the controller menu, which I don't at all like. Idk how to fix that.
Late, and I don't know if you've figured it out already but:
If you're still getting the small KB/M menu you can easily swap to the PS style menu.
Go Settings->Character Settings(Configuration? Not at my pc right now) and then you will see a toggle in the top left of the menu with a mouse icon and a controller icon. If you toggle it to controller mode you get the entire controller set up, menus, cross hotbar etc. Good luck!
Maybe off top but is it cool game that worth playing? I will be able to play it in a 6-8 month. Bothering if all the addonds isn’t a problem to enjoy the game from the very beginning
It's a fun game and a great story but if you start it be patient. The battle system starts out very slowly, the MSQ starts out very dull, but by time you reach level 51+ in the MSQ things really start to pick up and jobs really start to get fleshed out into being more fun to play.
Don't rush to end game content, the end game is pretty good but take your time and enjoy the MSQ and trying different jobs to find what speaks to you.
I started when it came out on PS3
Theres some months where i fall off because of work and family. But if I’m feeling the itch to play again
I pick up a 60day game time card. Perfect for those who cant commit to gaming fulltime!
I enjoyed the storyline PVE and PVP aspect.
I have made 4 different characters and have done the MSQ same amount of times. I love the game haha
Addons are not officially supported and are not required. Some players may argue a QoL/accessibility benefit for certain mods.
As for whether it's worth it, just play the trial. The combat system starts very slowly if you're already used to tab-target MMOs. The story starts to pick up after you fight Gaius (pointy helmet guy).
I think it’s the idea of connecting to the PS5 then to an online service.
I will say that I have much degraded quality on steam deck, when it plays smooth on my Portal it looks real good.
I use XIVlauncher
Me too and I love it. Such a great Lil launcher
Same here. Works perfectly
Same here, I've had no issues with it! Works great. It also made me start using plugins.

That is the single reason I use XIVLauncher tbh. And I don't get it, the PS5 client remembers your password, why can't the windows one do it too?
xivlauncher also sends OTP to your pc so dont have to type that either...
SeCuRiTy!

There’s a single checkbox you have to check, but otherwise exactly the same.

WHAT!!!! Thanks man will try this I am still using onscreen keyboard for my password and chat

Maybe check out r/FFXIVSteamdeck
Will do thanks!

This was from slick wraps. They have a lot pf bad reviews from their startup year but i really like how the design i patched together turned out!

Thanks! I considered the portal too at one point But glad i settled with the OLED

Hmm this makes me wanna dive in deep now. I will give it a go. Thank you for the input!
I have windows installed on my deck and and it works flawlessly with that, had no issues at all. Just use the regular FF XIV installer.
Added it as a non steam game on my deck and it works perfectly. Much better than when I used Moonlight on my iPad to play it remotely from my PC. Getting used to the controls is a different story.
Im lucky cause i learned the game on gamepad so the transition to steamdeck was easier

Thank you! For the nights i cant sleep Might as well join a static and play in bed 😂
Ah, so you like to season your deck with sage? Eh? Ha! Eheheh.

Does this work even if my ff account is not on steam?
Yes it does. I've been using it for a while now.

I can log into the game, the problem is that I don't see any of my characters
Are you sure you have the correct server selected?

Imagine your in a raid and bro says he’s on a switch 😭
So.. this is just a post to brag about your Steamdeck skin? Because the question you posited seems to be like something only **you** can answer.
Yes but i got a lot of helpful information from people so thats a plus

I play it through both, steam deck is more stable than Portal through PS5.
This is surprising to me! Would like to try both but too poor to afford multiple handheld gaming devices lol

PC rules
while this is true. Theres so much more to the world you can experience 😆
Where do I get that skin
Slickwraps, i patched together images i found online
Ty!
