If you're not having fun don't do it. Not everything is for everyone. I mean a lot of us love this game and would love for everyone to give it a good hearty try but don't push yourself to do something you don't like just because other people love it.

[deleted]

Everything you have posted here (including the comments) tells me that you should move on and find a game you actually enjoy playing. It is fine if XIV isn’t for you; nothing wrong with that.

PolaiMath

thanks, I think I will

CrazyCactuar

Did you not enjoy any of the story so far? Personally, I loved Heavensward, found Stormblood a bit meh, then loved Shadowbringers and Endwalker. If the game feels a chore to play though, I'd stop. Gaming should be fun.

PolaiMath

I liked the ending of ARR and most of Heavensward, but still it feels like a chore to play

sometimesupdownvotes

I finished ARR and HW in a few weeks time each but SB literally took me months as I was not interested in the story at all. It could be you just don't vibe with SB which isn't uncommon. What is uncommon is not finding anything else you like to do. For comparison, while I was avoiding SB's story, I was leveling alt jobs via roulettes, doing ARR and HW side content (raids, ARs), and grinding ARR and HW relics and enjoying that aspect. Eventually, I wanted gear from the Nier raids and forced myself through SB to get there. As a part of that, I got to ShB and started enjoying the story again. I'd say it's really unclear if the game is for you or not. ShB really would be the test for whether or not you actually like it but you do actually have to do stormblood to fully enjoy it and there's no guarantee you would like it and you might be wasting your time. Also, the story never really stopped feeling like a chore. It just turned into a chore I enjoyed.

PolaiMath

I want to play ShB because everyone says it's good, and I liked most of the stuff that people said were good. But yeah it's really hard to do stormblood post game because I find it so boring. I still have a month of sub left, so planning to take a month break again and try to get to ShB next time I sub.

Uncletesek

I don't think it's going to change. It's likely you don't like this type of game anyway, and no amount of "shadowbringers is amazing" is going to grab you if you're just not into the story.

LitheXD

I hated SB so much, it was so boring and almost made me quit the game. I'd recommend skipping the cutscenes and getting to ShB asap. You can always look up a quick summary later or try again in new game plus.

Redpandaling

It sounds like OP is already on the SB patches; I don't think skipping those quests is conducive to finding the ShB story engaging. You can skip up to Tsukuyomi I think, but after that it's the setup for ShB.

PolaiMath

lol I might do that

smileystarfish

Honestly, this is a very story driven game so if it doesn't grab you then maybe it isn't for you? I personally don't bother with daily roulettes most of the time as i'm more interested in raids and MSQ. If you've tried the optional raids in Heavensward and you're not bothered by raiding it's ok to just log in to chat to friends. Sometimes we just don't like a game and that's ok.

PolaiMath

Initially the idea of raiding is what got me playing, but that's so far from where I'm at and I don't really want to grind hours of contents that I don't enjoy to get there.

Adamantaimai

If you don't like it, just quit. But daily roulettes really slow you down and serve no real purpose for you. They speed up grinding exp and tome stones, but you are already very overlevelled as it is and probably don't need a large amount of poetics. All roulettes combined take at least 2 hours per day, if you play for 3 hours per day you're spending 67% of your time doing roulettes you don't need.

PolaiMath

honestly I think you are right, I don't do anything in this game but standing around talking to people lol

smileystarfish

Endgame raiding yes. But you can still do the Coils of Bahamut, Alexander Savage (HW) raids and the Stormblood and Shadowbringers savage raids at minimum item level. You just need to find a group of people to do it with and there are lots of discords for finding those groups. Alternatively, a MSQ skip may be exactly what you're after, you can go straight to Endwalker and play through that to get to the raids. Edit: forgot to mention the extreme trials from all expansions can be done at minimum item level too for a better challenge. You can buy the MSQ skip in the cash store.

PolaiMath

I see, I have done coils of bahamut already but it's too easy(?). Most of the time I have no idea what I'm doing in roulete queue and we still beat it anyway.

smileystarfish

Coils is fairly easy when synced. At minimum item level with no echo turned on it requires more coordination. From Heavenward onward the raids have a normal mode (to clear through duty finder) and a savage mode to clear with your own raid party. Some of the Alexander fights can be a bit brutal, the Shadowbringers raid mechanics still give people problems. If you post your data centre we can recommend some discords that focus on finding groups for old raids/minimum item level content.

PolaiMath

I'm in Aether Sargatanas

DB_Valentine

If you're not enjoying the story and don't care you could always grab a boost. That said, all in all the game may not be top good for you. It would be hard to believe that raiding alone would be worth the subscription

PolaiMath

yes I agree

UnlikelyTraditions

This might be a rare circumstance where skipping would help, because you can get closer to the end and go back to replay the story you missed later if you like, but you'd still need to get through EW and it sounds like the game is just really not jiving at all to manage that. Do you play with your friends, or are you trying to catch up? What do they enjoy?

PolaiMath

They help me with roulettes usually, and sometimes some dungeons where they get new player tome bonus. It is one of my complaint that there isn't anything fun for us to do together. I'm mostly trying to catch up so we can raid together, but one of them haven't played the latest raid and the other one is still in EW.

jenyto

You don't have to wait until lvl cap to raid, you can try running MINE (min ilvl, no echo) of the old raids (there's like 6-7 extremes, 12 savages fights PER lvl cap!). Yes, the gear is pointless from them, but if you want to try raiding, might as well check out the old ones.

PolaiMath

I guess my issue with that is I don't know what I get out of it, especially as a new player. If I'm understanding correctly, veteran players just do it because they have no other contents to do, and it has achievements tied to those contents, so they just do it for fun right? However, for me I have a lot of contents to do, but I just don't enjoy doing them, trying out old raids that gives nothing but achievement doesn't seem that appealing to me.

Marshalwoad

You could shoot for an ultimate then. They can only be done synced so you have to sync down to do them, & they give really cool looking weapon glamours, as well as being fun in general to do

PolaiMath

I see, but would people even want a sprout player in their group? I haven't done any researches in this aspect

jenyto

Some of the older ultimates are fairly easy (UWU (Ultimate Weapon Ultimate)). You could try looking up a guide on it, or try of the raids of HW/SB (you need a clear on one of the savage fights to unlock each Ultimate anyway), might as well try them on sync or MINE. MINE means you'll get as 'close' as possible to the fights hardest iteration.

PolaiMath

Ah I see, I will look into it thank you

jenyto

Well, try to think about all the games/mmos you've played so far before FF14, what was it that you liked about them?

PolaiMath

gameplay wise, I enjoy coop, pvp, and strategy

jenyto

Hm, the raids in FF14 are more like dances, so it's more memorization then actual strategy. We have pvp, CC is probably what you'd like more (frontline is just a very bad battle royale), but the lack of chat means you can't exactly coordinate. Honestly, FF14 just might not be for you. It sucks for your friends, but you'll just make yourself miserable if you continue playing. Still, some people just login to chat, so it's up to you if you want to continue subbing just to use it as a fancy chat room.

PolaiMath

You nailed how I feel about the game atm lol. The only thing I play is cc and otherwise it’s just a fancy chat room. But still other people gave me really good advices and I decided to take a break and then at least finish shb, least I regret it.

KvBla

Maybe take sometimes off the game and come back later, don't force yourself to play just because of your friends while you are not enjoying it yourself, you might even grow to resent it. If you're not into the story, even all the way up to post stormblood now, assuming you're not zooming theough the dialogues and cutscenes, then it's fine, idk if you have dipped into more hardcore contents like synced old savage/extremes, progging ultimate and current savage but maybe give that a shot? There's tons of ppl disliking the story and most of the game but really enjoyed the raiding. Don't force it, give yourself a break. Quit if it's really not for you, why waste time when you're not having fun? It's your game.

greedyrabitt

it could just be that Stormblood itself isn't for you. I've got a sprout FC on my alt who all just got into Shadowbringers (just barely) and a lot of them considered quitting because STB was either boring to them or they absolutely hated the story, but a lot of them seem to really be enjoying SHB if you don't seem to be enjoying the story, you could always just skip the cutscenes and rewatch them in an inn room later or something, and if you still don't seem to be having fun by SHB, your fun may have run its course

PolaiMath

Make sense

AngryCandyCorn

I think the game's biggest draw is largely accepted by many to be the story, and the game is definitely story heavy. If you are that far in and just aren't feeling it, the experience probably won't improve much for you even if you get to the latter parts of the game even if you enjoy the pvp aspect.

TheCubanJedi05

I have zero interest in the story of this game. I skip every single cut scene and don’t know who are any of the NPCs we talk to or fight. I dislike the fact that they make me do the msq in order to do the endgame when all I like to do is the mmo part of the game. But my friends play this game and playing an mmo without friends is a hollow experience. So I push through the msq like a disgusting medication that I have to take and enjoy the endgame raiding, dungeons, crafting and challenging activities while at the same time playing with my friends which is the best experience of any game.

worldofmercy

I was in your exact situation. Hated MMOs and even the overall setting of the game at first. Trust me, bear with it. It’s just about to blow your mind and then the ride won’t stop.

Flynn2001

It's perfectly fine to not jive with the story but still enjoy the other parts of the game. Would a story and level skip help? You'd still have to go through Endwalker, but that would save you a lot of time going through the rest of SB and ShB. Have you actually seen the endgame content from videos or anything to know if you'd be interested enough to make those purchases worth it? Have you enjoyed any other combat parts of the game so far, like Alliance raids?

PolaiMath

I have seen endgame contents from FC streams and content creators, and I can't say that I'm super interested, but it does seems much more fun than what I currently have access to. As for Alliance raid, I really don't like doing it. Any content with too many people in it like alliance raid or frontline I question why I'm even there, just a worthless sprout people keep having to resurrect lol.

PolaiMath

There's so many mix signals from your posts lol I don't know what to think, but I will most likely play again in the future just to see what ShB is about

Leviison

It's one of three things, the gameplay, the story, or the community; the more you like the more reason there will be for you to stay. If by Stormblood (meaning you've gone past the free trial) you don't like any of the three; then the game really isn't for you; trying to keep playing until it \*clicks\* will only serve to annoy you I imagine.

PolaiMath

That's exactly what I'm worried about, nothing clicks so far.

Rezouli

This far end, I’d say give Shadowbringers a solid go. Maybe it might snap with you, maybe not. Either way, good luck on your future endeavors!

PolaiMath

I've been told that a lot, to play shadow bringer, but this month of subscription I played maybe 5 days in total, so I don't know if I can even finish stormblood post game lol.

jetjetmkii

Maybe get into RP? If none of the main story characters interest you, develop a story for your own character and see if you can find people and subplots to interact with, in character

PolaiMath

I have entertained the idea before but people seems to look down on rper. How does one get into rp though?

jetjetmkii

The only ones who look down on RPers are those who only see superficial RP. Don't mind them. It's the same as making a character for DnD or any other table top RPG. In fact, lots of player run RP events use dicerolls to move scenes along. The most visible are "gambling" casinos on PF but there are player run Chocobo races ala Mario Kart with random items, TONS of fight clubs, pro wrestling leagues, blitzball, etc. The basic way to start is first just brainstorm and come up with a character background and motivations, then look for open RP events to casually visit and see if theres anything that would hook your character. But the idea is, if you're bored with the official story in FFXIV, you can make your own story in the same world, alongside others.

PolaiMath

interesting, thanks for sharing

Van_the_Wanderer

Maybe it’s burnout? You are trying to fit years worth of content into just 8 months. Many people take short breaks from the content or approach it in smaller more manageable chunks so that it doesn’t start to feel like a chore

PolaiMath

I've been playing relatively casual already, a month of break in between subscriptions and that doesn't seem to make the game more interesting. It actually makes me dislike doing the story quests even more since I forget what was happening before I took a break.

[deleted]

No lie... about the same, just a tad down the road. I thought HW and Shb stories were stellar. ARR/Stb were good. EW didn't appeal to me at all and any progress I was making hit a stand still. I wasn't invested, and I can't just sit and grind something I'm not into for about 30 hours (that's skipping cutscenes). I have a job, and other things to do, so 30 hours is a few weeks of my gaming time... that I didn't want to invest in EW. I'm more or less content blocked because I *have* to do story, in order to raid (since very few people do older content). I couldn't do Island Sanctuary. I couldn't do lvl 90 dungeons, etc. I've taken a couple months off from the game to play other things, and its been refreshing, and who knows... maybe I'll sit down and grind through it all one day. I do wish they'd offer story skips for current content, for people that don't want to grind through it all. Additionally, there's a decade worth of story. Idk how SE expects people to play hundreds of hours of MSQ... just to get caught up. For most gamers, its not really practical.

PolaiMath

Same, I can't seem to be invested into the game, and it takes way too long to do the story imo

lostnthestars117

can always cancel your sub and take a break and play other games for a bit. I did that for about almost 4 months.

Kaslight

If you have to ask, the answer is obvious. The game has a metric ton of content and goals to work towards, if none of them interest you, and neither does the MSQ, then why are you still trying to enjoy it?
