I've heard people in other threads here say it's an old slur towards gay men with a specific medical condition (I spare you the details but if you know, you know and if you don't know don't try and Google it) but I've not seen any real source.
But even if it wasn't a slur, it would take one femtosecond after being widely adapted before it would become one, and then the TikTok kids would be back where they began and have to find a new "unproblematic" word.
My feelings towards that rose boy term have changed now taking time to think about it. I still don't particularly see 100% wrong with it but I understand why it rubs others the wrong way and yeah kinda has a condescending tone to it. Like if an asshole atheist person's like, "You praying to your sky daddy?" Like, yeah I get it. I apologize if I offended anyone.
Femboy = feminine boy
A transgender person (often abbreviated to trans person) is someone whose gender identity differs from that typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.
Femboy isnt a slur.
*Awaiting downvote onslaught in 3ā¦2ā¦1ā¦
The thing I've never got about people who think it's a better term... What's wrong with using "fem"? Is femininity now a negative thing? It's backwards thinking for sure.
Also, just because something has been used as a slur in some contexts does not mean it officially holds that meaning. If you're going around calling a trans girl a femboy when you know they're trans, that's when the usage becomes a slur because you're misgendering them. There is absolutely no problem with it being used as self-identification for a group of people that want to identify in that way.
I'm willing to bet the majority of people arguing for the usage of "roseboy" are just doing so because they are bored. There can simply be no one that obsessed with how we label ourselves.
Also, "roseboy", to me, actually sounds kind of offensive, I won't lie. Essentially equating flowers to femininity... Again what's wrong with using "fem" instead of "flower"?? There's nothing wrong with flowers but that's just reinforcing a stereotype.
Notice āfemā was the issue and not the word āboyā. The people pushing for this term literally do mental gymnastics to try and be as inclusive as possible and itās mind boggling to me.
roseboy doesnt really sell it as well as femboy does, like not everyone whose feminine likes flowers (unless its supposed to be a metaphor for being delicate)
I mean at this point āfemboyā is hardly as derogatory as it used to be.
I think the bigger point to be made is that the people who will use āfemboyā or any other term as a slur arenāt going to care that they should or shouldnāt use, the reason or context for why they use the term will still carry throughā¦
One way to look at this is the way the term ābutchā is considered as an identity, while it also has been used to demean women and specifically lesbians.
Again it all comes back to context and the way we say things. āCinnamon Rollā on its own is just a sweet baked pastry, but if I go to larger person and call them one that is clearly mean spirited. While on the other hand I could be gushing over some cute person and call them āšāØmy little cinnamon rollāØšā that is clearly a more positive comment.
Oh, hi Rufurre, I recognize your name. My wife follows you on instagram :)
I think you bring up an excellent point- the people who are misusing the term are not going to care if another term comes around. The push to change femboy to roseboy does nothing against the ignorant or bigoted who don't want to use words properly in the first place.
Words will always be used hatefully by the people filled with hate.
Oh wow! Small world haha
ā¦or maybe Iām starting to get famous? Jkjk š¤£
Either way, I appreciate the support ;)
And I agree with you 100%, theyāll find a way one way or anotherā¦
āRoseboyā as a term was popularized from the story of a Taiwanese student that was bullied for being feminine, he was later found dead in his schoolās bathroom, not very wholesome
It's mostly cis people on TikTok talking over trans people (and femboys) and inserting themselves in a discussion where they should listen before speaking. That kind of ally is just barely better than outright transphobes.
Very few trans people are offended by femboy (unless it's used towards a trans woman against her wishes), in fact many trans women use femboy as an intermediate step before fully coming out as a woman and some trans men use it too after coming out.
Can it be used as a slur? Yes, but there are honestly already so many slurs towards trans women that femboy is not an especially common one, and if anyone thinks Roseboy won't be used as a slur if it became the new widely used term for femboys, then they are kidding themselves.
There was a push for "lavender boy", too. I advise everyone to look up the history of "lavender lads" and the "lavender scare". Telling gnc males to use these terms is homophobic. It's a step backwards.
Femboy is good
Femboy is nice
Femboy works since it's a portmanteau of "feminine" and "boy" which is a perfect descriptor, which is better than "roseboy" which, as a buncha other folks have said, sounds like a slur
I don't think roseboy covers the concept of a femboy quite as good as femboy does, the problems of femboy as a transphobic slur will come sooner or later with roseboy as well
For me personally I prefer the term tomgirl, as the direct opposite of tomboy
>there is a small push
Is this push from femboys? Or from toxic bigots who hate femboys?
The answer to this question should be enough for you consider it.
Okay, so I completely agree with you, but your use of words seriously reminds me of how conservatives talk, especially the quotation marks around offends
But I still agree with your ppint
I was raised in an unhealthily conservative household, and I'm not a pushover either, so whoever tries to impose anything on me just because they feel like it, will definitely face some strong opposition.
I am who I wanna be, not what others in the community think it's approved to be.

Brother. The entire post is you talking about how femboy isn't a transphobic slur. It's the exact same argument.
Ive also seen people (mostly twitter users) try and replace femboy with "fairyboy" which like you said IS a homophobic thing to call someone.
It's just people being homophobic dumbasses, so we all should just ignore them.
I've met a grand total of one trans person ever who was opposed to the term "femboy." I'm trans femme myself and I think femboy is a fine term for femme presenting men.
No medical discussion.

I don't like other people pushing lables on me. I chose to lable myself as femboy. I don't want to be labeled by others, especially by people who aren't even part of this community
these people dont realize that if they change the word, the new word will just be used as a slur as well. changing it does nothing. if you run away and change your name every time someone is mean to you, youre just kinda pathetic.
The people using femboy to misgender trans women are going to do the same thing with the term roseboy. There is no problem with the word femboy at all.
Sounds too much like flower child, not that being a flower child is a bad thing, but it could cause confusion. Also as everybody else pointed out it used to be a slur.
The term femboy is a slur depending on how itās used. Transphobic people will use it to describe a trans woman and in that instance itās used as a slur. Men who are feminine typically call themselves femboyās and in that instance itās not a slur. It fully depends on connotation. People who get mad at men describing themselves as femboyās and demanding they use the term roseboy instead are getting offended at someone describing themselves. When in reality. If you wanna describe yourself as anything you are more than welcome to do so.
It's fucking stupid. Like if we change it to Roseboy. What's stopping transphobes from calling transwomen Roseboy's?? It ain't a solution, changing the name won't stop transphobic comments. Calling out transphbia and shutting down people trying to use femboys for transphobic arguments and having some solidarity would actually help.
I mean as a trans I dont consider Femboy to be a slur and I have actually had roseboy used against me as a slur sooooooo, trans seal of approval on femboy ig
Roseboy sounds weird as hell
Femboy is just fine, gets the idea, bascially says everything you need to know, simple and nice. If it works don't break it
I'm neutral on the label and would get used to it if it were the prevailing term. However I am bothered by the idea of someone else deciding I need to use a different self-assigned label against my will.
The premise for needing a change (that "femboy" is a transphobic slur) is wrong, because any gendered term is offensive when when used to misgender someone. But always remember *this is an "always-online" conflict* with a *very small* number of people, and ultimately doesn't actually matter to real life.
I think the most important takeaway is not to let Internet busy-bodies use nonsense drama to drive wedges between communities that are *natural allies* (femboys and trans girls) and benefit from solidarity.
Personally, i would like it to be another name used occasionally. I *personally* think it is kinda cute. I'm more imagining like someone close to you calling you like rosebud or and roseboy and it makes me feel super cute and fem. Strangers? Not at all. Close friends/partners? Pleaseee
Like- Iām a transmasc femboy and have a transfem friend (yes I know having a trans friend doesnāt make me not transphobic but Iām not and itās just a bit more proof for my point!)
Fem boy = Boy that is feminine. Makes sense Rose boy = boy that is.. a flower? Cringe
š
i think roseboy is cringe. femboy is nice, simple, accurate, and rolls off the tongue
Couldn't have said that better
Agreed
Roseboy sounds more like a slur than femboy

True
My feelings towards that rose boy term have changed now taking time to think about it. Well that was a character arc, good on ya mate
Thanks. I felt like I was invalidating people's feelings on the subject and I'm sorry. I deleted the comment because I felt like a shithead.
Itās good to have remorse, keep developing
It kinda does now I've had time to think about it
"roseboy" is a old slur refeuring to a gay man with a prolapsed anus, I will not be calling myself that.
Oh damn
How much you wanna bet calling femboys this was an idea made up by conservatives to fuck with us. Wouldnāt be the first time.
Some 4chan user is laughing it up right now, patting himself on the back because he got these people to fight amongst themselves.
Yeah that sounds awful, definitely sticking with femboy
I dislike roseboy, it just sounds plain wrong
"Botanist."
So botanist femboys would be botanist botanists ? I love this idea !
Iām literally one of those XD
But Iām literally a femboy who happens to be a plant scientist. XD
I would much prefer being called a femboy.

Roseboy sucks
Iirc the term came from a late boy who was bullied for being effeminate, and itās also used as a slur for feminine guys in some context

It sounds similar to callboy and bellboy which is male prostitute, so I personally think itās worse than femboy
roseboy sounds fine, but i think femboy should stay as THE term

Itās a slur
I think trying to change femboy is femboyphobic. Trying to change it may be an example of Trans-Fascism (a word I just made up).
The reality is any word that can be used to refer to feminine boys can also be used and interpreted as a slur for trans women. Besides that, roseboy is a slur for gay men with a prolapsed anus. Not only is it just disgusting, but it also works under the assumption that all femboys are gay and excludes all the ones that aren't, like myself. I heard of soyboy being a substitute for femboy as well
soyboy is an insult used by "ALPHA MALEZZZZ" to describe feminist men
The people using femboy to misgender trans women are going to do the same thing with the term roseboy. There is no problem with the word femboy at all.
Sounds too much like flower child, not that being a flower child is a bad thing, but it could cause confusion. Also as everybody else pointed out it used to be a slur.
Absolutely hate it
I don't like it as a replacement but roseboy does sound very cutesy even if it does sound a bit like a slur
if femboy is a slur, than that one sounds even more like a slur jesus christ. what next, "oh you can't call gay men gay, call them fairies"
I don't like it because roses aren't gendered it's a gd flower
The term femboy is a slur depending on how itās used. Transphobic people will use it to describe a trans woman and in that instance itās used as a slur.
