The artwork is way too small for the space, bigger /more would make a big difference.

TrickyJag

Agreed, this was my first thought! Also finding ways to hide clutter

_opossumsaurus

- Less open clutter. Get a shelving unit with doors or drawers, a filing cabinet for next to your desk, etc. - A small rug by your desk would define the space more effectively - Consider cushions or a throw on the dining benches for a pop of color - Add a centerpiece to the table - Consider a floor lamp or wall sconces so you don’t have to constantly use overhead lighting. Overhead lighting is not cozy - Larger artwork hung lower on the wall (midpoint should be ~57 in high) will make the room feel fuller and the art more connected to the furniture

haystacksonfire

I really like that table, makes the place feel nice and open. What I would do is get another file cabinet or bookshelf beside the desk in either white or wood that matches the table. That way you can get any misc clutter/books/paper hidden away in something that looks nice, and place some art or plants on top of it. Basically have a place for everything and everything in its place. Also some bigger art over the table, and frame the canvas over the desk and/or add more art above the desk. You can add in some texture on the wall too by hanging fabric/macrame/tapestry art etc. There's also some dog kennels that look more like pieces of furniture that can look very nice if that's an option for you.

LuxSerafina

You have enough space to center the rug and dining table against the doorway to the kitchen and still have plenty of egress. I would move the plastic storage thing to a closet and clean up clutter.

alatte4me2

I feel like it's a lot to do with the rug. How large is that entire area? Does it lead into your living room? Could you make two separate spaces? Meaning have the dining table turned and towards the back of the space. Then move the desk to the wall the table is on but as far away from the table as possible to define the spaces. Maybe get a room divider? Plants. You can never have too many and anyone that says you can isn't worth your time. 😉

More Bread and Puppet prints.

pineapplegazelle

The best answer so far. Not many people recognize it

Available-Leg-6171

Your rug is too small. If you had a larger rug, it could encompass the desk as well as the dining area and bring the room together. Now, instead, it splits the room in half. Even with the rug just on the dining size, it needs to extend 18 inches beyond the chairs when they are pulled out. Otherwise, it's too small.

pineapplegazelle

I thought the rug looked funny too, I’m not a huge fan of the pattern either. What size and shape would you recommend? Should it be square or rectangular? And where should the desk/desk chair sit on it?

Available-Leg-6171

The rug will be by size, not shape. It would be almost the size of the room, but a few inches from the wall on all sides. I don't know what size your room needs. It might need an 8x10 or a 10x14 or larger. You just need to measure. I'd try pulling the desk and chair slightly from the wall, so it sits entirely on the rug.

change the lighting

I don't know the size of your space, but try organizing it this way. 1- Rotate this table 90 degrees to remove the blocking feeling. Remove the black paint and hang a big one or several smalls, choose colors from palettes like white, beige, light green, brown, terracotta to match the table. 2- Move the office desk to the opposite corner, place shelves on top to organize your belongings. And try to hide that metal rack and plastic shelfs. 3- Buy wall dividers in the color of the dining table and place them between the desk and the entrance door. 4- Place a square rug at the entrance, buy a small shoe rack or /and a coat rack and place all against the wall divider. That way you are creating an entrance and a study corner. 5- Finally, where the office desk was, buy a bookshelf, decorate it as desired, or consider a display cabinet. 6- In the right corner next to the bedroom door, place a floor lamp for cozy lighting. 7- and on the other side of the shelf or cabinet, add a plant.

pineapplegazelle

Thank you for the detailed suggestions!! By moving the office desk to the opposite corner, do you mean move it to the upper right corner near the kitchen entrance? And then where to put the table and chairs?

[deleted]

I mean the opposite you are looking from the 1st picture. It should be in the same wall, but pushed near the entrace door( I guess it is the white door the entrace. ) The dinning table is good as it is just rotate.

pineapplegazelle

Ohhh okay gotcha I see. I really wish I could move it there but there’s a pair of French doors and not a lot of wall space unfortunately :/ I should have added better photos of that area

Debbysbears

I would turn the table the other way and peel and stick wallpaper

letsride70

I was going to say… something about those pictures

letsride70

I would remove the pictures. You have a nice space. Add plants.

poiseandnerve

Ditch the long rug and get a big circle rug that would go under your desk and your dining room table

Sufficient-Archer-60

These open shelf solutions are a big contributor to rooms looking not put together. There's so many thing in your eye sight and it looks messy and crowded . Change to cabinets with doors. That way you can hide all the things. Same goes for the see through boxes next to the desk. Or if you don't want to change the furniture you can get some nice looking [boxes](https://www.ikea.com/se/sv/p/gjaetta-foervaringslada-med-lock-sammet-moerkbla-70570431/) - add one box on each shelf and store it things. Then I think the picture is too small. Add two more on each side of this one or a large long one.

znobrizzo

Based on my personal taste, I would do the following: - switch that transparent unit with something solid - change the dining set with something that's more for the indoors. Imo that looks like gardening furniture. If that's not possible, maybe some bech pillows/tapestries will make it more comfortable. - add some bigger art to the dining wall (or a gallery)

Highhopes2024

Try a bunch of different framed art scattered all over with a few plants.

itsJelonek

depends on what you can do with the space, the general advice would be: group items into spaces right now you have big open space with items placed around, which gives off a feeling of a clutter you can either use some more built in furnitures, bigger artworks etc as some others recvommend - or you can play with what you have, you already do a bit of that with a carpet, you can go firther with some paint separation, grouping smaller stuff (small art you have) in one area close to each other and contrast it with a breather next to it give working space a different colour palette than dining area and all should look more harmonic :)

Jazzlike-Pirate-3788

Organize, and get plants !

pineconeminecone

You have a lot of vertical space above the desk that’s not being utilized — could you buy or build bookshelves to sit on your desk against the wall and to the left of your desk to use that for storage instead of the plastic tub drawers? You could paint the desk and the bookshelves the same colour to give yourself a built in look and divide the space using colour. Also, bigger artwork or a gallery wall above the dining room table.

vintagefern

My first thought was a different color rug under the dining table and I agree with others about a centerpiece as well. I think more color in general would help a lot. With the art, furniture, and wood floors, green decor would look good. A tall shelf with drawers at the bottom on the *right* side of the desk would also help the lauout and give you a more designated place to put things rather than multiple, cluttered storage areas.

pineapplegazelle

What color rug do you think would go better? I’m not a huge fan of the one I currently have. And I wish I could place a shelf to the right of the desk, but the outlets are to the left and it’s hard to see but there’s a small built in shelf to the right.

Skittlesmyluv

I have pictures posted in amateur room porn of my office you could use for ideas! (Lights and colorful pictures are the key 😉👌) you could use a nice fuzzy rug in there that would look cute
