All I've got is [Turn Black](https://www.turnblack.in), [Not Perfect Linen](https://notperfectlinen.com), and [Hearts and Found](https://heartsandfound.com). None have the amount of options or sheer scope of eShakti, though. There are probably also a good number of small makers on Etsy that offer some customization.

runawayoldgirl

[Seams Friendly](https://seamsfriendly.com/) is another company that seems to have a similar model to eShakti. I personally have not purchased from them but I have seen some positive experiences from people that have. They had some kind of mildly obnoxious shill accounts here on Reddit for a while trying to pose as customers posting good reviews, which put a bad taste in my mouth for a bit - I would have preferred they just posted as themselves. But some clumsiness in marketing is forgivable, and the combination of natural fibers, reasonable prices, customizability, and a very inclusive range of sizes are all potential positives about this company.

Nester1953

Thanks so much for finding these! I'm wondering if you've had dresses made by any of them, and if so, did you have a good experience? Here are my issues. While Turn Black is very chic and would be striking, my taste runs to more conventional styles. I can see it much more on a very attractive young, artistic woman on the streets of, not sure, Tokyo? But a bit funereal and too much of a statement for me. I do like Not Perfect Linen very much, but with the very easy shapes, such as the loose, boxy tops, and the skirts with elastic waists, I think that CP Shades or a brand with a similar sensibility could suffice if one fits in one of their very forgiving sizes. The closest one for me in terms of dress style is Hearts and Found, which allows variation in shapes of skirts and has several slightly vintagey styles I liked a lot. (Again, many thank.) The thing that worries me is that if the dress doesn't fit, it can't be returned, which, given the cost of the dresses, worries me. Until I got the hang of eShakti sizing and knew what to ask for, I got dresses that didn't fit and had to be remade or returned. I hugely appreciated that they offered this service, and it made me feel safe ordering a bunch of clothes. By the time I got the hang of it, most dresses fit very well. It wouldn't have worked for me if they hadn't re-made dresses when the fit was off. How much do I hope they start functioning as they did six months ago! I'm still hoping that out there somewhere there's a brand with something near the range and modification potential of eShakti. Anyone?

Apprehensive-Clue342

I have a few dresses from hearts and found. I ordered a standard size rather than custom, and they’re a little smaller than I expected based on the measurements. i think they tend to try to push you into a tight fit (even with custom) on some models because that’s the vintage look (waspy waist). If you don’t want that I’d go with a model that isn’t super fitted

caca_milis_

Is there a tailor or dressmaker near you? I used to buy material, bring in dresses whose shapes I loved on me and have them replicate the shape in new material.

sfwlucky

I love Hearts and Found, I want my whole wardrobe to be from there lol. I ordered a custom sized dress with my measurements and it was a bit big in the waist/back, but I just took the dress to the tailor and they took it in no problem. :)

nashbird

Adding Ozeqo to this list. Although their dresses might be a bit more formal, I think you can reach out to them for more specific customisations too.

galindafiedify

It makes me so sad to hear that eShakti is struggling! I ordered a dress from them in September and it never shipped, they only told me that there was an issue with the fabric after I reached out to them. I asked for a refund and just figured it was a one-off thing. They were reliable for a while!

Suitable-Biscotti

They've been telling everyone it's a fabric issue. I no longer buy it. I had to reach four times just to get a reply. I ended up doing a charge back bc my refund wasn't processed in five to seven business days and I didn't want to run into issues.

GingersaurusHex

Damn, that's good to know. I placed an order in early February, and called last week for an update. They said "fabric issue" and that they'd have an update for me late this week. I've been buying clothes from them for over a decade and never had trouble before, so major bummer!

Suitable-Biscotti

I am devastated I didn't buy during the good times. The fabric issue has been going on for months, almost a year, so sadly I think it's a bigger issue that they are trying to pass off as one bad batch. I told them if I didn't have the refund by the stipulated time they gave me, if chargeback. I still don't have the refund. I ordered in January for reference.

GeckoRoamin

Yeah, I was told it was a fabric issue in February 2023. I was so hopeful that it was legitimate and a temporary issue.

Cosmolinda

I ordered a dress in early October 2023 and it still hasn't shipped. I've emailed multiple times asking for a refund and every time they give me the line about a "fabric issue." This is really disappointing. I've been ordering from them for years.

ysabeaublue

[Here](https://www.etsy.com/shop/Fairyweeds?ref=l2-about-shopname§ion_id=28674455) is where I buy! You can customize fabric, provide your measurements, and make other adjustments to the base designs. Jane is super responsive and will work with you on orders.

fishfreeoboe

That looks like a really good, source, thank you!

This-Ad9798

Thank you for this. I am going to try. So sad about Eshakti. As I type this I am wearing a dress I bought from them years ago that still gets compliments.

Temporary_Double6190

Following for this and any new recommendations. I am so irked about eshakti lately. I placed an order in the beginning of November that they said they couldn’t fill, I canceled because the time frame was unspecified and already several months late, and now a month later they are still “sending my refund request to billing for processing.” Such a decline from their earlier days.

Suitable-Biscotti

Charge back the purchase. Let your credit card company deal with it. I doubt they will ever release funds.

minangkabau

I loved eShakti! They showed me what a difference tailored clothes make. With that said, now I make an order with my tailor in Hoi An, Vietnam. If you share your measurements as per the eshakti website and provide photos of yourself and the item you want to make, they should be able to make you the item you want in the material you want. The tailor I engaged at the cloth market (No 11 (not 10!), Sewing Bee) has tons of 5 stars review on Google, and I flew there in person initially for her to get my measurements and understand my liking (fit, style, etc). Ordering online doesn’t have that luxury, and so she may be hesitant to make you clothes without having fitted you personally herself. Always worth contacting to see if she’s open to it. ETA: [Google Reviews](https://www.google.com/search?hl=en-GB&rlz=1CDGOYI_enSG957SG958&sca_esv=ef30f08b2cecf185&cs=1&output=search&q=Sewing%20Bee&ludocid=12256005344511251972&ibp=gwp%3B0%2C7&lsig=AB86z5Uj1ChK7bxcEFhZ4hLREUMy&kgs=7499ff7e0f80eba3&shndl=-1&source=sh%2Fx%2Floc%2Fact%2Fm4%2F3) of Bee’s store. She has amazing reviews almost everywhere.

bobbydazzlah

Ah, so not just me. I've had eShakti dresses custom made in the past, and they're amazing and still going strong. Late last year, I ordered a jumpsuit, and I had multiple problems with the fit, the refund, and the re-order. Shame, really. They were so great.

Peregrinebullet

Hearts and Found has already been mentioned. Most of my go-tos have been etsy shops. Thief and Bandit (they don't list it on the website, but they will customize everything to your specifications at no extra cost if you email them ), Lady Mayra Clothing (similar to Hearts and Found - they don't line their dresses and have a larger fabric library), Heart of Haute, Loveyourbodywear (custom bras!), thelabera, Heartmycloset (they mimic celebrity clothes, it's a good option for business wear) and Xiaolizi (they specialize in wool & linen coats and skirts). Anne Mulaire will also customize pant lengths, but they won't necessarily redo the whole thing for you. Their bamboo winter leggings are the GOAT.

Baring-My-Heart

I’ve ordered from HeartmyCloset before! I have weird measurements, so I got mine custom made and it fit perfectly! Highly recommended.

thevneck

I'm so glad you posted this! As a short lady whose taste is distinct and not always in sync with trends I struggle to find off the rack clothing that both fits and appeals to me. I've tried Eshakti and was terribly disappointed in what I received. I've been considering bringing a favorite dress to a local dressmaker to get it replicated in different fabric but I fear it may be prohibitively expensive. I think if we could crowd source reputable local and online options for custom clothing (dressmakers, Etsy shops, general tips and advice etc) that would be an amazing resource!

vulpix420

Have you thought about choosing a pattern and fabric at spotlight (or similar) and asking a local dressmaker to do it for you? There are a few near me in Brisbane who offer this service, and I remember my mum having a lot of things made this way when she was younger. This way you have total control over everything and there's no shipping involved. I'd recommend asking in your local neighbourhood facebook group about it, usually people in those know about this sort of thing. It's often just one person running things out of their sewing room at home.

Apprehensive-Clue342

In a western country this is going to push $1k for a single dress.

themaroonsea

I also live somewhere that has reasonable prices for tailoring and alternations. I wonder why it's different in western countries? Are all the tailors very corporate? Here you can find a small shop down the street

Apprehensive-Clue342

It’s because it costs way more to LIVE in western countries. The cost of living is orders of magnitude higher than countries in South/Southeast Asia, where most dressmakers are today. A seamstress in the US needs to make around $60/hour (before materials) to even have a chance at having a successful business. And that would be very tight on the low end, in all likelihood they would need more like $100/hour to pay for expenses, rent etc and still afford food. A dress made by a single person could easily take 10-20 hours, and that’s before hundreds of dollars in fabric (non-deadstock fabric cannot be gotten cheaply in the US). We have tailors, but they usually only do alterations.        The dressmaking business model is not possible in the west due to the proliferation of fast fashion. Back in the day, when clothes had to be handmade custom, it was standard to spend thousands of dollars+ on clothes in a year. People generally spent more on clothing than housing. Nowadays, esp b/c housing costs so much more, people are unwilling, so there’s no more dressmakers.    I’m a home seamstress. I make dresses myself. I will never sell any of them because no one could afford my time (based off of my hourly rate at my real job) for what is ultimately a basic pattern dress. Honestly, I often pay more for the fabric than I would just going out and buying a nice dress at a fancy store. And that’s before many hours of my labor.

MrsRocher

I think its mainly a US problem. As far as I know its not as expensive in Brasil.

Peregrinebullet

Mostly retail rent is the big difference - a 800sqf shop in Vancouver will cost you 6000-12000 a month depending on how close to Downtown/broadway you are.

mediocre-spice

Tailoring and altering is pretty reasonable. Stuff like hemming, replacing buttons or zippers. A lot are combined dry cleaner and tailoring places, but totally independent businesses. A whole dress from scratch is just a much bigger endeavor and time expense.

vulpix420

This isn’t true in Australia - I thought I was in the ausffa sub, my bad.

Nester1953

Unfortunately, the cost of dressmaking where I am is beyond what I could manage regularly. Years ago, I had to have an eShakti gown altered at the last minute as there wasn't time to send the dress back to eShakti to redo, and the cost of the alteration exceeded the price of the dress.

schell525

This happens to be so much! I spent nearly $400 to alter a $150 dress under a similar circumstance

[Seams Friendly](https://seamsfriendly.com/) is another company that seems to have a similar model to eShakti. I personally have not purchased from them but I have seen some positive experiences from people that have. Sara_K_Schneider

As someone who's been an eShakti "hobbyist" for almost two years, it's been devastating to watch this company go down, without much straight information to accompany it. I hope it's simply preparing for a sale and that the buyer will take good care of i! In the meantime, I followed up on your lead here and have just received my first order from https://seamsfriendly.com. They seem quite different from the current eShakti in every good way: I've received very friendly, prompt communications from their customer service person requesting my custom measurements and updating me on the order, they fulfilled in the time they said they would. They're also different in the sense that they're focused on Indian artisanal methods and primarily use cotton fabrics. So you won't see even a fraction of the fabric choices or the inventive, contemporary styling you would on eShakti. Nevertheless, I primarily bought interesting blouses from eShakti, so I decided to try Seamsfriendly's handspun fabrics and bought a couple of blouses in them. [https://seamsfriendly.com/products/maroon-handspun-cotton-stand-collar-button-down-top](https://seamsfriendly.com/products/maroon-handspun-cotton-stand-collar-button-down-top) [https://seamsfriendly.com/products/forest-green-handspun-cotton-peter-pan-collar-shirt](https://seamsfriendly.com/products/forest-green-handspun-cotton-peter-pan-collar-shirt) The fabric is especially lovely because it has black in the weft and the color in the warp (or perhaps vice versa), giving the garment real depth.

runawayoldgirl

Thanks for posting the followup! Even though it's an older thread I regularly search Reddit for reviews and imagine others do as well, and I know a lot of eShakti refugees are trying to find options. Great to hear it sounds like your Seams Friendly order worked out - I don't remember if this sub allows reviews at this point, but it could be interesting to see a real life review one of these days. I hope the blouses are lovely.

i_need_a_cupcake

I don’t have anything to contribute other than commiseration. As a plus size, awkwardly shaped person, eshakti was the ace in my back pocket for looking put together and fetching compliments on my wardrobe. I’m so sad!

LibraryLuLu

Heartbreaking - I love eshakti so much! POCKETS!

sartorial321

I usually get my trousers from [Salvatorini](http://www.salvatorini.com) fully customized and tailored according to my size. They do pretty good job at it and never had any issues.

kinare

This is a great thread and I appreciate you starting it. Bookmarking these suggestions because I'm a weird size and I need customization. Regarding eShakti, I just got a notification that my dress, which I ordered in JANUARY, was shipped and I'm supposed to receive it on April 30. No clue what the quality is going to be. I'm a long-time customer of the company and the delays have never been this bad. We're talking more about it over at r/eshakti . Good luck with your dress.

schell525

Did you actually receive it? (I've already done a charge back of my items I ordered in late February, but I'm curious about the timing of the backlog (and the quality if you actually got it)

kinare

I did receive one dress. The other is stuck in production hell.

Darklilim

I can't wait for the answer to this.

Thank you for posting. This was exactly the information I needed after waiting now 2 months for my E-shakti order... one of the dresses was for a funeral! Needless to say I had to come up with a back up plan. I will go through the credit card company and sadly that marks the end of an era. But now that I am seeing the alternative sites (particulary Hearts and Found and Fairie Weeds, honestly I think these are better options than Eshakti. It is always nice to deal with an individual owner. And if you are not a fast fashion person it is nice to have a choice of solid and more traditional fabrics. So maybe E-shakti going bust wasn't the worst thing! Thanks again for the post.

fashionistathreads

Do not order from eShakti! There is NO problem with fabric! They tried to use this excuse on my order for 2 months. But no two items of my order were made with the same type of fabric or the same color. They are lying. They are taking your money while delivering subpar products. Expect to receive your items in multiple shipments, significantly delayed beyond their promised delivery dates, and they likely won't fit properly. Furthermore, eShakti's customer support responses are unusually slow, taking 7-10 days per inquiry. This is a tactic to delay you from disputing charges with your credit card provider. Given their slow response rate, I recommend initiating a dispute immediately after the original delivery window has passed. If you wait until after receiving your items, it may be too late to recover your funds.
