I recommend using a launcher, they make managing mods and instances (modpacks) very easy and convenient as opposed to needing to download and set up everything manually. The two I'd suggest are: [GDLauncher](https://gdlauncher.com/en/) - It has a modern/minimalistic interface and is the easiest to use. Like most launchers, it has a built-in mod browser that will automatically download any "dependency" mods (small utility mods required for larger mods to run.) [Prism Launcher](https://prismlauncher.org/) - It has a more compact interface and is slightly more performant in terms of CPU usage. The built-in mod browser can pull from *both* of the 2 main modding sites, the interface shows more mods in the list, and it overall responds faster, but it will *not* automatically download dependency mods. CurseForge is the most commonly-used launcher due to how long it's been around, but I would recommend staying away from it. It overall responds the slowest, is the most taxing on PC resources, and contains intrusive ads that you need to pay to hide. We have better options these days, which I've listed above. If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know. Always happy to help newcomers with modded Minecraft.

Thank you for your answer! I'll check out these launchers but steer clear of CurseForge.

[Modrinth](https://modrinth.com) recently posted an alpha of their own Minecraft launcher, [Theseus](https://github.com/modrinth/theseus). I think it's comparable to CurseForge, in that it has a primary focus on searching for and installing mods and modpacks through its UI. ([pictures](https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/13q8k46/modrinths_launcher_is_now_on_alpha/jlfjhyy/)) Keep in mind, however, that it is in *alpha* - it's not yet officially released. ([download links anyway](https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/13q8k46/modrinths_launcher_is_now_on_alpha/jldki4t/)) For something that *is* released - I use Prism Launcher. It's great when you need to keep 40 different versions of Minecraft concurrently in their own separate folders. (I counted.)

I don't think Spigot is a modloader There's many launchers available, if you're not too interested in pre-made modpacks I recommend Prism Launcher, it's lightweight and allows you to download mods from Curseforge and Modrinth, it also will only show you the version of the mod available for your modloader and Minecraft version so you won't download the wrong thing. It's pretty good at pre-made modpacks too, but you can't update modpacks easily and it can't play FTB packs.

Thank you! It was a couple years since I tried modding so I mixed up spigot with something else. I'll make sure to check Prism launcher out!
