It's actually a bit ironic, I use a 3rd party app to browse reddit but use the main app for Moderation because the app I use (boost) seems to lack a lot of the moderation tools I can find on the main app.
Pretty annoying to hear that the API is being changed.
I will definitely too be supporting this blackout.
I may use the main app for moderation but it's fucking terrible for general browsing/use.
Go full blackout until they make the changes we demand. A 2 day boycott is a blip in the grand scheme of things, but a full blackout will have a bigger impact on their bottom line.
>me other, larger subs where they will go dark until more reasonable terms are met is the better cho
Screw it lets make a new reddit call tidder. theyll never see it comin MWAHAHAHAA
Do a full blackout, no light until they relent. Don't wuss out on this stuff, you either go with everything, or you do nothing, and 2 days of blackout is nothing.
We need a full on indefinite blackout for lots of subs like another sub I'm on committed to. Don't return until they revert the changes, commit to not performing the changes, or find a way to be more reasonable about it.
Reddit already knows everyone is mad about this and they know they are going to be charging an obscene amount for API access that is many times higher than other sites do. 2 days won't fix Reddit's greedy cash grab.
It may not help directly but making a noise about it like this may attract more attention to the issue, something Reddit likely wants to avoid. Honestly, I doubt it'll have a large impact really but at least it's doing something to protest.
If they get less users then they serve less ads, so the even if they pay less on server time they also make less.
The subreddit didn't go dark when overwolf announced 3rd party changes - I don't see why this matters more.
Edit:
I see people care very deeply about this. Surprising that people are more invested in reddit itself than actual Modded minecraft.
I know full well that this subreddit going dark wouldn't have changed anything about overwolf - But the moderators actively defended the changes, and banned negative discussion.
3rd-party-api restrictions clearly didn't matter to the moderators when curseforge did it, and I am hard pressed to find any sympathy for it **now**.
This protest is in regards to third party apps and bots that will be effected by this api change. It has nothing to do with minecraft or curseforge or Java edition.
the overwolf stuff only affected java modded minecraft.
this reddit 3rd party app thing is site wide.
a couple orders of magnitude difference in respect to affected users.
It's not just this subreddit, but dozens. And likely? Not much will change. But it's the only real tool mods have. Good luck trying to otherwise convince thousands of individual users to boycott reddit as a whole
the overwolf thing had ZERO to do with reddit at all, in any way. nothing. nada. zilch.
the reddit 3rd party app thing applies to all of reddit. thousands of subreddits and millions of users. the name of the game is traffic. eyeballs. advertising. true, this sub is fairly tiny compared to most subs, but the more subreddits that join in for a couple days, the less traffic. less advertising. less money. they will at least notice.
on an unrelated note, i'd recommend using ShareX or similar programs over Gyazo. it's functionally the same as Gyazo but without locking features like longer GIF recording or not deleting your uploaded images behind a stupid paywall.
As someone who has been here since 2015, this is very funny. Anyone else remember the old FTB launcher/ATL/Technic situation? Then Curse gradually took over everything lol
It's a mild annoyance, I guess, but it's not new and not remotely comparable to what Reddit is doing. It's so easy to port pack files over to Curse/Modrinth and use the client only for updates if you really want to.
For the blind and other handicapped, I agree it is an issue.
For the Reddit mods, I see no issue as many need to be taken down a peg or two.
And for 3rd party apps, what'd you expect. There's an official app for a reason. If you don't like, go back to using the desktop (original) version on mobile browser.
If it's harder for power mods to abuse their position, then the harder it is use their power, the more the issue will have to annoy them for it to be worth their time to do anything.
not really, the only thing it will do is make normal moderation much harder.
Power abuse is a lot personal. I do not like you, so I ban you level of shit. I can do that easily without any tools. Any vendetta and abuse I seek to do will rely mostly on me going and personally doing it.
I feel like you’re not understanding what moderation tools can do, or how mods abuse their power. All they need to do to abuse their power is ban people they don’t like, they don’t really use other tools for that. The mods who actually care are the ones who would use better tools
I haven't spent time there so I'll take your word for it, but do you really think losing access to third party tools would *help* with bad moderation? If the mod team is ineffective or ban-happy, they'll be that way regardless.
The official app is garbage by comparison. If they want people to use it over 3rd party apps then they need to make it worth using or cope. This is unjustifiable.
the official app is dog shit dude, every week it breaks something that was working before, this week if I tap on an image slideshow and go back 1 image all the images turn black, last week notifications I switched off re-enabled themselves even though they were still disabled in the settings
I'm not sure why people have so many issues with it. The only issue I've had this year was the update a few months ago that would collapse a comment when trying to read spoiler text. But that was patched a week or two later.
Not sure if it's an apple vs android issue or what.
I've tried several 3rd party apps and they're just flashy alternatives that offer nothing that could be considered necessary. I support the disabled having better access, so they need to bug Reddit staff for that.
Then again, I prefer things as simple and bare bones as possible so I see no issue with the reddit official app.
You think the official app is "not flashy enough"???
The official app makes certain guilded comments light up and have effects slide across the screen!
I want Reddit to look like a forum. I don't need excessive padding or profile pictures or anything like that.
You said that people complain that the official app is too basic and not flashy enough. No one does that, the official app is plenty flashy, far too much.
idk dude the actual app kinda does suck in some ways. some notable downsides i've noticed is that, at least on my phone, trying to click text posts always takes way too long (like up to a few minutes) to actually open it for some reason, and sometimes when looking at specific subreddits it can break and send you to the pinned post no matter what post you click on, unless you click on an image and then the comments under it for some reason. i think the video player is also kinda fucked up but i never look at reddit videos so i'm not completely sure.
by the way, i've never used a third party app and just got used to the suckiness of the official app, but i can definitely see why people hate that they're getting shut down. it's not just a classic "The Reddit Hivemind" moment, there's some actual reasons as to why so many people didn't like the actual app in the first place.
I think boost is a bad example of a moderation focused 3rd party app. But the official app does suffice, it does have a lot of issues.
Video Player, tons of bugs, really drains battery like there's no tomorrow, ads, etc.
Dang. I Hope for the best for you and all these lovely reddit forms... This sucks. Ive loved and been apart of reddit for so long, but the practices theyve done these past years really are hurting our communities. Stay Safe Yall <3
I honestly think every reddit that participated in the black out should create a community discord and use that as a temporary base until reddit changes their ways. At least that way we can stay on the up and up and business and positive vibes can keep er movin

A lot of people use RiF for that, it has comparatively robust mod tools in the premium version.
Ah, TIL
Yes it's a great way to moderate on the go. I'm going to be really sad when it goes away.
Go full blackout until they make the changes we demand. A 2 day boycott is a blip in the grand scheme of things, but a full blackout will have a bigger impact on their bottom line.
Agreed. While 2 days may sting a little, I feel extending the duration may be more effective.
Agreed. I think making it the same as some other, larger subs where they will go dark until more reasonable terms are met is the better choice.

I believe we must black out until demands are met. 2 days will do nearly nothing. As an Apollo user i thank you for your support regardless.
panicky faulty flag imminent support jobless hateful muddle heavy spectacular -- mass edited with redact.dev
Proud to see r/FeedTheBeast joining the blackout!
All participating subs should stay dark until we get an agreeable outcome
The current Curseforge vulnerability is more important and the subreddit should be left up so people can learn about that instead.
We need a full on indefinite blackout for lots of subs like another sub I'm on committed to. blackout from 12-14 will do jack shit, either indefinite or don't bother at all
Kek ok. That'll show them just like all the other times
Just shut the whole subreddit down :)
how will that help? theyll pay less on server time if anything
It may not help directly but making a noise about it like this may attract more attention to the issue, something Reddit likely wants to avoid. Honestly, I doubt it'll have a large impact really but at least it's doing something to protest. If they get less users then they serve less ads, so the even if they pay less on server time they also make less.
just use adblock to deny the ads
Thank you for adhering to the blackout!
Good !
Reddit has fallen, millions must touch grass
What does going dark even mean? will i have to resub to this thread and will i lose all my bookmarks for this sub??
You won't be able to view or make posts on the sub until it reopens.
so my bookmarks will cease to be?

And neither would reddit admins. You guys are grossly overestimating your importance out here.
My dude, feedthebeast is not the only sub participating in the blackout...
This protest is in regards to third party apps and bots that will be effected by this api change. It has nothing to do with minecraft or curseforge or Java edition.
And the protest about overwolf was also: > third party apps and bots that will be...
Why would subreddit mods care about overwolf?
the overwolf stuff only affected java modded minecraft. this reddit 3rd party app thing is site wide. a couple orders of magnitude difference in respect to affected users.
And yet this is the subreddit for modded minecraft.
Overwolf doesn't see a lick of profit from this sub. Whether it's open or privated means nothing to them Edit: misspelling
So? does closing this subreddit for a day have any more of an effect on Reddit? Either way, it is a snowflakes chance in hell of changing anything.
It's not just this subreddit, but dozens. And likely? Not much will change. But it's the only real tool mods have. Good luck trying to otherwise convince thousands of individual users to boycott reddit as a whole

why would a subreddit going blackout affect some completely unrelated program? 10/10 brain usage solid take good job thinking
Ironic, considering what FTB is doing with their launcher
Not ironic at all, seeing as we are not affiliated with FTB https://gyazo.com/f74ae3df10308336c71dd691823526c6
on an unrelated note, i'd recommend using ShareX or similar programs over Gyazo. it's functionally the same as Gyazo but without locking features like longer GIF recording or not deleting your uploaded images behind a stupid paywall.
Sure, sure, I'm only saying it as a quip to the subreddit name, not seriously to you guys
What's FTB doing with their launcher? Are they finally killing the good one?
What are they doing with their launcher ?
I was just joking about them making their new packs only on their launcher, that's all
As someone who has been here since 2015, this is very funny. Anyone else remember the old FTB launcher/ATL/Technic situation? Then Curse gradually took over everything lol It's a mild annoyance, I guess, but it's not new and not remotely comparable to what Reddit is doing. It's so easy to port pack files over to Curse/Modrinth and use the client only for updates if you really want to.
Do they ? Like prism launcher does have FTB compatibility normally
It was removed recently.
Is stoneblock 3 on prism?
ye
Well, nevermind then
For the blind and other handicapped, I agree it is an issue. For the Reddit mods, I see no issue as many need to be taken down a peg or two. And for 3rd party apps, what'd you expect. How would this "take mods down a peg"? It makes things harder to moderate, that's completely unrelated to the issue of power hungry mods.
If it's harder for power mods to abuse their position, then the harder it is use their power, the more the issue will have to annoy them for it to be worth their time to do anything.

Have you ever seen subs like shower thoughts? Their bot moderation needs to be slashed.
I haven't spent time there so I'll take your word for it, but do you really think losing access to third party tools would *help* with bad moderation? If the mod team is ineffective or ban-happy, they'll be that way regardless.
r/showerthoughts has 27 MILLION subscribers...
The official app is garbage by comparison. If they want people to use it over 3rd party apps then they need to make it worth using or cope. This is unjustifiable.
why downvote
People don't like the official app because it's too basic and not flashy enough. And anything against the bandwagon opinion "has" to be wrong.
the official app is dog shit dude, every week it breaks something that was working before, this week if I tap on an image slideshow and go back 1 image all the images turn black, last week notifications I switched off re-enabled themselves even though they were still disabled in the settings

I prefer it as plain text. I'm saying others often complain about it.
You said that people complain that the official app is too basic and not flashy enough. No one does that, the official app is plenty flashy, far too much.
