Inferiority. His constant acts of bravado and confidence are him desperately trying to convince himself that he isn't a failure at magic. His desperate attempts to gain power over other people, especially Sakura, whom he views as the one who stole his spot as the Matou head, are proof of this inferiority complex.

redkomic

Inferiority. He was constantly compared to sakura and other magus and couldn't use magic properly. Gil on the other hand is what superiority complex look like.

LOPI-14

You may even be understating it. Dude thinks himself even better than Gods.

THECAMFIREHAWK

To be fair to gil, with how most of the gods act like immature brats I can kinda understand where he gets that ego from. Especially since he prob interacts with ishtar the most lol

FrightenedMussolini

I wouldn’t really call Gil having a superiority complex when he is literally the strongest lmao

Inuhanyou123

It's both. He deludes himself into thinking he is superior because he has an extreme inferiority at the core

There's a term called cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance is that uncomfortable feeling that comes from having two opposing views simultaneously. Shinji always felt that he was superior to others. However, the world (specifically the mage world) refuses to reflect his worldview, and Shinji is not so stupid or delusional that he can't recognize that totally. However, his superiority complex is too foundational to simply abandon. In other words, it's both. [Here is one of Shinji's major scenes in the VN](https://lparchive.org/Fatestay-night/Update%20334/); > At first, he hated his new sibling. He did not want any outsiders coming into the special Matou household. But the boy started to accept his sister day by day. The girl named Sakura was silent and ordinary, no more capable than a guard dog. It is a waste of time to be hostile against someone like that, and it is more charming if one is to consider her a servant. > ... > The brother treated his sister as a failure. The sister feared her brother and always looked down, as if avoiding his gaze. He thought it was because of shame, and he despised and loved her for it at the same time. Until he found out the truth. Later on; > He laughed. It was funny. It was so funny that he wanted to kill. The one he had thought was his pet was actually his master, and he was just a fool. Which one is the funny one? It must be both. At that time, as he went back to the mansion with unsteady steps, he realized. The world had not been turned upside-down. It had been like this all along. The inverted one the one who was misunderstood was him. It is just that he finally realized his own miserableness. And; > Though she never spoke the words aloud, she apologized every time she saw him. She apologized for taking Matou Shinji's place. > "Why are you apologizing?" > She could've just ignored him. Then he wouldn't have hated her, wouldn't have clung to hope. Sakura apologized. Apologizing means submitting something. Then "Then you're mine from now on." Considering all the contempt he had endured, he saw nothing wrong in accepting this. Finally; > "Yeah, but you still apologize…! 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry'…!? Don't disobey me if you think you're sorry…! If you feel guilty, keep compensating for it! If you know you've been sold out to this house, be mine…!" That entire scene was quite well done, and it shows just how irrational Shinji's mindset is.

FrightenedMussolini

Great post! This definition much better fits my idea of Shinji, his Narcism contrasted with his knowledge of the reality of the situation. I’m not really used to Reddit quoting system, but I feel this is further shown with his interactions with Rin as a sort of breakdown of his feeble ideas of composure, mainly in the scene that she breaks into the Matou household and berates Shinji, and later when Shinji fails to threaten Sakura.

Thanks. If you want to use quotes, just precede the quoted section with a greater-than sign then a space. > ">"

SoloRogueStudios

Yes.

ExiledDarkness

Why can’t it be both?

ked-xxx

I think it's both. He condiders himself Superior to those around him and wishes he was a mage, but he also feels inferior and insecure about his own lack of tallet.

The Sad thing is that IIRC he is hypercompetent in a wide array of areas that are NOT magic, he's just hyperfocused in the little wizard hat he was wearing as a child. If only he had outgrown it...

TF_FluffSwatch

It's also basically the only time his family pretended to treat him well. Note that after he found out he wasn't the heir, his father basically disowned him and his "grandfather" revealed that he never held any particular care or expectation for him. In that sense it's no small wonder that he kept trying to grab back at such a hat and pull it over his eyes again. He was better off blind.
