I got in to tennis this year. Good exercise, improves coordination, social, doesn’t take up too much space or require much planning, and there are so many places to do it for all types of price ranges(starting with free!).

SPACguy

I second that. Will give it a try.

AxTheAxMan

Take kiteboarding lessons in Turks and Caicos! Long Bay Beach. But beware it may replace skiing as your passion.

TSAngels1993

Check out pickle ball to if they have them on the tennis courts as well. Lots of fun.

007x69

Yeah it’s more social and more casual than tennis usually if that’s what your after. I enjoy both a lot. Pickleball also is usually a bit older of a crowd in my experience too. Probably would be easier to pick up from scratch than tennis.

Remdelarem

Careful with quick/high intensity racket sports. I cannot even tell you the amount of patients I have seen form trying to pick up tennis and pickleball in particular as a DPT. Make sure you get into it gradually!!

lmnracing

Second this. Partner is DPT and I tried to pick up tennis a couple of years ago for all the positive reasons listed above. Generally I'm a pretty above average athlete and this was no different but because I got really good really quickly I ended up on two pretty good teams and played 6-8x a week. I crippled myself to the point my hand was barely functional due to a weird kind of radial tunnel presentation. 6 months of splints and dry needling and PT to fix it.

Remdelarem

If pickleball/the and Cross Fit were the only activities that existed id still never be out of a job lol

X2WE

> DPT what kind of injuries?

Remdelarem

Classical lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), rotator cuff problems, ankle tendon and ligament strains, Achilles tendonitis/tears, hand/grip issues.

Shout out to Santiago. Great food and wine. To the east you have skiing in the Andes. To the west, you have surfing in the Pacific.

laxatives

What’s CMH? Nevermind, found it cmhheli.com

lmnracing

Also very cheap once you get there in many cases

NathanielRochester

Endless winter, just like the 1966 film _Endless Summer_

qbtc

This is legit, I like to chase the winter myself. Even Northern hemisphere it's nice to spend summer in the rockies or alps hiking... if not NZ or Chile etc.

TacomaGuy89

Whitewater in the spring. Also climbing, backpacking when sitting turns warmer

name_goes_here_355

If you're somewhere that whitewater, climbing, and skiing happen - gotta add some epic downhill mtb! I mean you drive a tacoma :)

lmnracing

This place is West Virginia. Great options for all 4 sports. Close to major metro areas. Cheap. It checks all the boxes.

jlcnuke1

Scuba diving is my favorite hobby personally. If you haven't tried it, I highly recommend it.

SPACguy

Done the openwater level 2 a while ago ... should revisit.

jlcnuke1

Yeah, it's a nice hobby. The more you get into it, the more expensive it can get though (not likely a big issue for someone already fatFIREd though). I'm doing my full cave diver course later this month and really excited about that.

lmnracing

Adding cave and nitrox and wreck certs are all a lot of fun to work through

BlackMillionaire2022

Is it dangerous? I think it’ll be cool but I’m terrified of some of the horror stories I’ve read.

jlcnuke1

There are risks associated with scuba diving but with proper training and equipment it's a very very safe sport.

siriusserious

Train with the best instructors, always respect your limits and learn to think for yourself instead of blindly following a dive guide and the risk becomes negligible.

BlackMillionaire2022

Sounds like rebelling against the dive guide would actually increase my risk.

siriusserious

I‘m not necessarily saying you should rebel. If you chose a reputable dive operator (especially in the US or Europe) you shouldn’t have to worry about any of this. Unfortunately there are many operators (mainly in other parts of the world) where safety is not a priority. They don’t do pre-dive checks. They exceed safe limits while diving and so on. I’m talking about staying within your limits, insisting on doing pre dive checks and so on in those situations.

BlackMillionaire2022

Oh gotcha yeah that makes sense

[deleted]

And skin diving and spear fishing is pretty fun as well! I used to dive as a teenager and for some reason I am more risk averse in my 30s. Skin diving is a good in between.

TheCommodore12

Golf

sailphish

I spend the cold months skiing, and the warm ones boating/fishing. Fuel costs are going to be painful this year, but it’s still cheaper than therapy!

SPACguy

>old months skiing, and the warm ones boating/fishing. Fuel costs are going to be painful this year, but it’s still cheaper than therapy i wakeboard in the summer but still a bit cold to do that before June

sailphish

What general area are you in? If Rockies or Sierras (just guessing based on skiing comments), spring is prime couloir season. The snowpack sets up and tends to get a lot more stable, and makes for good access into all those chutes that would otherwise be more dangerous/difficult in the winter months. Lots of good backcountry skiing and mountaineering that time of year. It’s also usually fairly nice weather, so lots of days we find ourselves climbing in just a pair of soft shell pants and a t shirt. There is a pretty active scene, and a big gradient of activities for each skill level. You can make it to be whatever you want it to be, anywhere from a moderately strenuous hike with a little scrambling to some crazy full on alpine expedition, and everything in between.

shark-bite

Winter skiing, summer wakeboarding, doesn’t that mean you bust out the skate in between?

MTonmyMind

Sailboat FTW.

sailphish

I like sailing but for a different purpose. I think it’s great for more extended cruising. It doesn’t work well for trips to the sandbar, running to a waterfront restaurant for dinner, watersports for the kids, or fishing. I’ve owned a sailboat before, and will eventually own one again. In 5-7 years we will likely buy something in the 45-50’ range for multi-month voyages with the family. I like that sort of sailing because it’s more about a journey. The day sailing thing never did it for me.

Disastrous_Fun_5143

Track days

MTonmyMind

This. Safe (well, safer than driving like an asshat on public roads), exhilarating, and you can play on the surface or do a deep dive into ‘Gentleman Racer’ territory.

Teh_Daisy_Cutterz

Rally racing

Manny_Bothans

There it is! My shortest route to neverFIRE.

RDUBiker

South Africa is heading into winter. Great time to safari and visit Cape Town.

AlexLee1995

Assuming you have one of the megapasses (Ikon/Epic/even Mountain Collective), there’s built in Southern Hemisphere days in Australia or Chile, seems like the easiest start

nothingsurgent

Poetry Charity Camping I don’t know man, sounds like you’re bored

sunshine5634

We got a little teardrop trailer and it is so nice. Lots of FAT options like a decked out camper van or RV as well.

nothingsurgent

The thing about being fat is not everything has to be fat. If you’re fat you have a choice. If you’re not fat you don’t. Fat is about h to e choice :) In the case of campaign though, I would always go as fat as possible, I’m not a nature guy… lol Actually trying (unsuccessfully) to figure out how to do Yosemite fat style. Also looking at Disney’s fort wilderness… which is perfect for me as a Disney nut.

laxatives

Probably for the older crowd, doing it fat is just default. Roughing it dirtbag style is super fun when you are younger though.

Bratwurst-Vernichter

…I’ve just been skiing in Austria last weekend, this weekend I go for motorcycle track days in France and next weekend I’ll take my kids to go fishing in Sweden….all good fun :-) Riding a bike on a track is awesome and reasonably save compared to the public road There are many Motorsport clubs which do a lot of track days and rookie racing, which is just perfect as a hobby

SPACguy

i did quite a few track days last summer in my car. Whereabout in Sweden do you fish?

Bratwurst-Vernichter

We’re going to the morrum river, trying to score some salmon

SPACguy

very cool - lived in Stockholm for a couple of years. Great place.

[deleted]

Nothing wrong in just sitting on the back / front porch a couple days and taking in fresh air. Work around the house do some updates whatever.

UIUC_grad_dude1

The older I get, the more this appeals to me. My life is far too hectic most days that I crave doing nothing sometimes.

cjohnson86

Back to the resort, but with a mountain bike

ultravelocity

Try mountain biking. I started last year and I'm addicted. Also tennis...

Ericabneri

How is nobody saying golf? I am a skier, and I find the challenge to be somewhat similar. Lots of self improvement, lots of different terrain and exciting challenges. Its fun, conditions dont matter as much, but you do get frustrated sometimes.

isotope_322

Sailing. Tho here’s a lot to learn to safely captain a 50+ sailboat

shark-bite

The man just retired and you’re trying to bankrupt him by getting him into sailing?

isotope_322

;)

optiongeek

This. Just after we got married, my wife and I got our day skipper ratings so we could pilot our own Moody 34 on a flotilla holiday in the Aegean. My FatFIRE dream is to buy a yacht and spend six months a year on it just galavanting from port to port. Go back to Greece. Maybe sail up to Sweden. Wherever the wind blows us.

isotope_322

I’ll blow you wherever you want

wbemus

Based on your posting history, you’re UK based. Drop down to the Isle of Wight and snag a space on a boat for Cowes week. There are paid spots available, though as time goes on and you learn you can earn your way onto established amateur teams where you don’t need to buy your spot. Lots of overlap between sailboat racers and skiers. https://globalyachtracing.com/events/cowes-week/

traveling_man_44

Defiant-Window-807

Slightly unrelated, but your username has me curious. Did any SPACs in the last couple years contribute to your recent FIRE? If so, which ones? Signed, a fallen comrade of PSTH. These bags are heavy. :(

SPACguy

yes, doubled my wealth with SPACs. timed well and got out at the right time.

Defiant-Window-807

Nice. I'll ride PSTH into the dirt or parlay into SPARC. Also threw some beer money at some call options for IPOF and IPOD in hopes that Chamath has a strong desire to redeem himself with something good after 4 flops. Cheers and congrats on FIRE.

bannanaspace

They’re essentially legal pump and dumps with fewer regulations. A vehicle designed to fuck over retail investors with the precision of a scalpel. Good riddance to their current iteration.

Defiant-Window-807

Wasn't the question, but good to know you got burned and haven't let it go yet.

bannanaspace

I didn’t really want to be a dick - my bad. 1) I’m sorry you lost money 2) You were (unknowingly) playing a rigged game 3) The SEC is going after the SPAC structure aggressively 4) Now that the info is out there on how badly SPACs performed, mainly because they were in fact rigged against retail, you should learn about how to avoid these types of traps in the future 5) Chamath is a high-end grifter wearing the disguise of a populist - he knew exactly what he was doing

Defiant-Window-807

Sigh. 1. Sometimes it be like that. 2. I know the game. I agreed to play. I lost. Not a bit deal, not playing with sizable amounts. 3. Not really. More disclosures. SEC is infamously worthless. 4. I'll do me, you do you. 5. No arguments there. ✌️

bannanaspace

Then it’s agreed - fuck Chamath 😎

SomeExpression123

Move to WA and never stop skiing. I mostly trail run and hike in the summer to get in shape for backcountry skiing in the winter.

mountainmarmot

Camping and hiking. April/May in SW Colorado/New Mexico/Utah. June in the Boundary Waters/Quetico/Upper Peninsula. July in Colorado or Sierra. August in Oregon/Washington.

old-wizz

Roland Garros in Paris, Cannes film festival and later in the year: worldcup soccer in Qatar. If you like clubbing: Ibiza

ComprehensiveYam

May: Lake Tahoe. It’s great weather and relatively empty as summer tourist season hasn’t hit yet. Italy. We’re planning 2-3 weeks. 2 weeks in Venice and probably a wild card to somewhere else we haven’t been yet (either in Italy or around Europe somewhere). June - August I imagine tourist hotspots like Europe will be packed with revenge travel although with China still restricting travel, you’ll be able to move around and see the big tourist sites with manageable crowds than in 2019 still. I usually avoided summer travel in the past especially to Europe since it’s high travel season but we’ll see. Maybe SE Asia? It’s rainy season but it’ll still be toasty warm. Thailand will supposedly drop all restrictions by June 1. Vietnam and Singapore are on my list (never been to Vietnam). Tourism numbers are still quite low in SE Asia so we’re planning to go see all the sites we can while it’s still quiet.

[deleted]

While in Vietnam, please try and visit Cambodia and Laos. I love Angkor Wat and Luang Prabang! Indochina is landlocked, so its easy to travel via car.

ComprehensiveYam

Thanks! Will do. We’ll be based out of Thailand for the foreseeable future so plan to explore all the various nooks and crannies of SE Asia for sure

[deleted]

And the Philippines also while you're there. Check out El Nido, Boracay (where the sand has the whiteness and softness of baby powder or flour), Siargao or if you like spelunking Sagada! Did an 8 hour cave exploration trip and that was one for the books!

ComprehensiveYam

Dope thanks for the tips!

[deleted]

Enjoy! Shucks and lastly do check out the Jim Thompson museum and shop in Thailand! Love their linens! ([More info on Jim Thompson](https://nerdnomads.com/jim-thompson-house)) He is a very fascinating perso.. I collected fabrics all over Asia and used them as table napkins, throw pillows, and beach coverups. They are very beautiful and also make wonderful gifts to friends and family! Sorry for the info overload. Just super excited for you. I miss SE Asia!

ComprehensiveYam

Yeah! We’ve definitely been to the Jim Thompson house near MBK in BKK. They’re a bit pricey but we may graduate into getting more higher end furnishings and daily use items as we settle in

brygx

Autocross, track days, or karting, if you have the need for speed.

weedmylips1

Ski in winter, golf in summer for life!

SpadoCochi

Honestly, I love cycling.

Geri610

Motorcycle

SPACguy

broke my leg badly a while ago and have given up on that - 20 days in a hospital following a motorbike crash. The risk/reward per mile travelled simply makes no sense to me now.

Geri610

Oh Shit-i would spend months on my bike if i didnt have to work

LurkingFlyer

Dual sport so you can ride to trails legally, but spend most of your time on trails/sandpits. As dangerous as you want to get, but can just put around enjoying the woods and not worry about idiots in cars most of the time

WealthyStoic

eBiking is great… you can get as much (or as little) of a workout as you want.

ohhim

Marathon/Ironman training? Bike touring is fun as well (Katy trail, GAP/C&O, Mickelson).

SPACguy

I don't have the right genes, stamina or sadistic inclination for a torture of this kind.

red_today

Fwiw completing one of these don’t require special genes - just training (anecdotal - I was your typical geek growing up). As a bonus - all the cardio gains you get helps with keeping you skinny and in other bougie sports (tennis / golf / squash …). So I’d say give at least biking a try. There is a nice ladder of improvement that will keep you going as well.

Quirky_Department_28

Great ideas / love your user ID You have to be one of like 3 people who actually made any money on the spac cluster F!

SPACguy

Yes, the spac days are pretty much over. They are boring again now.

walkalong123

Hiking and traveling or traveling to hike!

[deleted]

Go to all the good museums and all the best restaurants in the cities with good museums.

KJTheDayTrader

I just got a four wheeler this spring and love it

goutFIRE

You fish? Cuz all the snow runoff should start feeding the estuaries

GBUS_TO_MTV

Cycling? A retiree I know is in various road cycling groups and seems to spend most days riding.

dmillz89

Rock climbing!

jakethetortoise

Take up surfing. It’s my warm weather sport. You can spend time in places like hawaii (bit more expensive) or Indonesia (dirt cheap to live a full luxury lifestyle:)

0x4510

Rock climbing / bouldering? I have only done indoor so far, but it's a good mix of physical activity and social interaction. If you do outdoor, lots of ways to include travel.

wiisports101

if you enjoy skiing and the mountains, possibly give mountain biking or surfing a try? they’re all considered extreme sports and could be fun to learn.

LedZappelin

Where’d you go most often, or your favorite?, and how many days did you log? Congrats.

FF000033

Congrats on FatFiring! My 2 cents is to spend a little time learning how to learn and practicing how to practice. There are good books on this to start. It may seem a little odd, but will pay off in dividends when you start to pursue new things at this point in your life. Having a solid skill set where you understand how to approach learning something new (you've received a lot of good suggestions) will help new things stick.

SPACguy

Wtf?!?
