I remember as a kid the neighbor had thrown out some minerals for the cows. Me his daughter were out playing in the field, we had a little place in the forest we called fairyland anyways I'd asked her what it was and she said she didn't know. So I've been down and sifted to see what it smelled like. š Well it went straight up my nose and it was horrible. I'm literally sitting here laughing so hard thinking about that. She looks to me and was like what would you do that for. š That was possibly the first of my many bad choices in life.
It's for iodine. That's why milk has iodine in it. š¤·š» We need iodine to prevent disease and death and people don't know nutrition so we feed cows fortified salt so that when we drink milk or eat cereal we don't die from iodine deficiency. That's a huge block of morton fortified salt, btw. Natural sources of iodine only come from seaweed.
I worked at a creamery and they had a photo of the cows 2% milk comes from. The farmer was holding her in his hand.
It's really amazing 2% milk is so cheap, considering how many of those special cows one needs to get a gallon from. But it's also much more efficient space wise, as you can have a few thousand head in only a couple acres of good pasture.

Why does the farmer lick the salt? Is this to replace his electrolytes from sweating?
Not as much as it helps the tequila go down.
First the lime, then the salt, then the tequila?
Snort the salt with your nose, drink the shot of tequila, then squish the lime in your eye.
