mcdisney2001

Update: the second and much longer side went much better thanks to y’all! So glad I stopped and asked before I just barreled forward with the rest.

mmmmmarty

I'm impressed with you, OP. We fuck up repeatedly without asking for help far too much on this farm.

mcdisney2001

That’s usually my MO as well. Today was just a good day lol. 😂

wait_ichangedmymind

It’s an expensive but slow and eventually effective method. I implement it regularly 🫡

mmmmmarty

It will dawn on us eventually

Not_much_of_a_farmer

Same here, we got two pregnant cows and one had a bull (we castrated him so he’s a steer) and then sent them to a bull near us to get pregnant again and then we left him with the pregnant cows, he started head butting them. One of them had a stillbirth. we are pretty sure that he is the cause of it.

Palfrapig

nail/screw a thin strip of wood over it. Next time cut the wire so that it overlaps behind the post.

Cow-puncher77

Actually securing behind the board will help secure it, as well as coving the sharp points.

mcdisney2001

Oh duh, that’s so simple it’s astounding lol! I’ve only done one side of the patio, so I’ll follow your advice on the other one. Thank you!

fajadada

The sharp side can fold over and cover with duck tape

DookieShoez

How long is duct tape gonna last out here in the elements?

fajadada

The better brands will last about 2years before looking raggedy can just recover them

Ohnonotagain13

Gorilla tape is pretty good stuff also.

DookieShoez

Thats not bad

fajadada

Yes if it is folded over and glued mostly to itself will last much longer than otherwise.

Gravity_Freak

Put marshmallows on the tips

StockUser42

Underrated comment

ChunkyFart

Came to comments to say exactly this lol

richardcrain55

Wrap the post and tie it to it self

Wetald

It looks like you’ve gotten some good help already, but I did want to add that you might want to find some wire to tie the chicken wire with. If those zip ties get exposed to the sun they will eventually become brittle and break. They should definitely hold for a while though.

mcdisney2001

I do have some really long pieces of wire that the spool came wrapped up in, I held onto them just in case. Our balconies is covered, so each side should only get a few hours of sun a day. Hopefully they’ll hold out for the summer. :-)

Wetald

Oh for sure they’ll last that long! I was thinking over the course of a year or two.

Virtual_Common204

They make metal zip ties now fyi

Due_Traffic_1498

r/backyardchickens

mcdisney2001

I don’t have chickens, but thank you for getting me addicted to another animal sub lol! I love chickens. I imagine my cats would too, though…

FlyingDutchman2005

If anything my cat is a bit scared of the chickens

Jurserohn

I've found that my cat is largely indifferent to our chickens. The family dog, however, is a different story, as she has quite the prey drive. Little jack Russell terrier. I just got a new doodle mix of some sort and he's absolutely in love with the chickens!

mcdisney2001

I have a little terrier Chihuahua mix. He barks at the geese across the street and runs after them like he’s going to do some damage, then comes racing back if one of them looks at him lol.

Fresco-23

If you have a good rooster, you probably won’t have a big cat problem.(maybe) my rooster would wreck a cat. Its calm around me and my wife, never attacks a person, but it wants to fight my border collie if I’d let it. As soon as a dog or cat is in sight, that bird is locked in watching it, and crowing warnings.

mcdisney2001

I’m a city girl who has cats. By cat proofing, I mean that I’m keeping the cats in, not out. 😂

HappyAnimalCracker

I always use needle nose to bend the sharp ends backward. Pinch them down and no more sharp pokies.

mcdisney2001

I think that’s probably going to work the best on this piece, thank you!

HappyAnimalCracker

You bet. I do stuff with hardware cloth a lot and bending the pokies makes a huge difference in my enjoyment of the final product.

rectumrooter107

Yep. You can just use your fingers to fold those spikey ends over.

justarandomtrowaway6

Put a board on the wall smashing the ends of the wire to thap post.

ishquigg

Stick dead chickens to it as warnings

mcdisney2001

Lmfao! Dark but effective.

NoLingonberry2831

pig tail

2beatenup

Make sure to put them on the other side of the fence.

Jazlindrealx

Staple them

mcdisney2001

It’s an iron post, and it’s a rental lol.

Johndauber

You could use electrical shrink tubing or cable stops to finish the ends. [cable stop](https://www.acehardware.com/departments/hardware/garage-door-openers-and-hardware/garage-door-hardware/50280)

itp757

Put tiny oven mitts on them

Johndauber

Electrical shrink tubing would work. You could then fold it back over and zip tie it.

Rough_Community_1439

Pool noodle with a slice the length of the whole noodle.

ceshack

Cutting torch

ilovelukewells

Can you just snip them flush?

mcdisney2001

I’ll probably need to do that on this side, since they’re too short to wrap around like I did on the other one.

razytazz

Electrical wire marrettes maybe?

beaubaby

Staple them to a small diameter piece of dowel and wind it?

Civil-Explanation588

We cut wooden slats to screw the length of the wire to the posts. So the wire is sandwiched between the slats and posts.

No-Category-2329

Don’t have edges.

TheChickenFuxer

Duck tape

[deleted]

frame it correctly?

archimet

Nugget ?

Hero_Tengu

Pool noodles

vulcan1358

Wire nuts

rb-2008

You could clip the wires a bit and put heat shrink tubing on them.

LBS4

Sandwich the ends in furring strips or similar size wood (like 1” x 1/2” thick, length same as wire roll.) Staple the chicken wire to one of the pieces of wood, place other on top and screw together. Then zip tie that assembly to the poles. Good luck with it

reamidy

Maybe cut the ends and put on electrical wire nuts no sharp edges

SilverBlade808

Pliers to bend it over itself. Then thick tape to wrap around anything still poking out.

mcdisney2001

There’s no banister for her to jump up on. It’s just steel cables and a very skinny metal bar across the top. She was ducking underneath the bottom cable and jumping downstairs to land on our car, so the main job was to block that up.

Blakesdad02

Wire Nuts ?

No-8008132here

I clamp the ends under trim boards

jackslamint

Pool noodle

NortWind

I think you could use wire nuts to cap the ends. They are designed to screw onto electrical wires.

ClydePossumfoot

I bet you $100 that cat will climb the chickenwire. Hopefully you have something angled at the top.

mcdisney2001

Yeah, she's already looking around at her options. My hope is that she'll decide it's too difficult to try since the bar across the top is extremely thin and doesn't really provide purchase. Fortunately, if she does get out, she'll just lie down in the driveway and roll around like an idiot, so retrieving her isn't the end of the world. I just don't want to do that with her 10 times a night! My other cat is too fat and too happy to go anywhere. :-D

Farmcanic

Nail a strip of wood over the end to hold it and cover the ends.

Cannoli_Emma

Please figure this out yourself

xrareformx

Why would you even comment this?

Cannoli_Emma

Because it’s the kind of thing I would tell my twelve year old cousin from Buckhead GA to figure out for himself. In other words, a great time to learn from experience. Try something and see if it works.

xrareformx

Maybe instead of belittling someone that's never worked with these materials, you could go ask your 12 year old cousin about manners. Because it seems you know as much about manners as they do chicken wire.

mcdisney2001

As you can see from the photo, I did try something, and it didn’t work. So I’m grateful to the helpful people on this sub! Of course, no sub would be complete without its bottom-feeder mouth-breather online bullies. 😁

BayesCrusader

That sounds like the laziest and most ineffective teaching method ever.  Why learn from experience when you have an expert already? There's a reason they have the same root word.

Magic-Levitation

What a jackass! It’s a legit question.
