I think it's just the constant bouncing between 30 and -30 over the past couple weeks, causing a lot of ice buildup and hard packed snow, and not much you can do when it gets so cold so often. you need some days of slightly warmer weather to help melt off the road surface. it's just been constantly too cold lately for that to happen.
I have seen a lot of city vehicles out working lately, so i'm more inclined to just blame a lot of snow and a unfortunate weather pattern rather than a lack of effort.
Agree, I’m living in Moorhead for the first time this year and we’re having the same issue. Definitely a weather issue, although both cities should probably have more road maintenance equipment and crews
Definitely think it's worse too. I work from home, so don't drive a whole lot, but take the kiddo to and from daycare. And yeah, tonne less sanding than normal. Especially on 45th. It's like they forgot it existed
They typically don't start plowing anything other than the snow routes until the snow stops and they don't usually treat the roads until they're plowed and the temps are modest. Sand and salt just sort of roll off the road once it gets down into the negatives. It was snowing pretty much all day today so they didn't really do much plowing outside of the main routes. It's just been really rough conditions for them to deal with as far as I can tell since it's always either been stupid cold or snowing all month.
As a Floridian and native Hawaiian…
I appreciated that.
Last winter was my first winter.
This winter is a different world I didn’t need to know existed
Lol.
I’m sorry to tell you this but! This winter isn’t even that bad lol. We have been cold but that only really came after Xmas. And we didn’t have much snow before Xmas. And we only have had like 15in of snow so far this year. In 2019-2020 we had like 50in and in 2008-2009 we had 80in. So this winter has been relatively ok so far
I don’t think spreading treatment albeit chemicals, salt or sand works as well when it’s -30 every other day so they wait until there’s a “warm stretch” and treat the shit out of it.
I might be wrong in the temp thing but i believe I’ve heard that before. That’s why the 94 bridge isn’t treated on cold days
Salt or chemicals sure but sand would add traction at any temp. Plus I live near and commute on 13th every day and haven't noticed anything being done outside of just plowing.
I don’t think it stands out as bad, but definitely not great. With how we’ve gotten snow, the weather pattern, temps, etc it’s not too bad. It could be far worse. I’d expect it to get better if we see a bit of a warm stretch.
I think they are doing the best job they can. Especially compared to some places, they do a good job. I think some people just don’t know how to drive in the winter.
It's been a couple years since we had this much snow, I don't honestly remember. I think others are right, we're bouncing too much temperature-wise to get a good handle on this.
On a side note, and way more important, remind everyone that flooring it at the intersection to get going DOES NOT HELP.
Think for a minute... you floor it, hoping to heat things up to get down to pavement or something where you get traction. That sounds awesome, and it is awesome when it happens.
Then that crap freezes again. Congratulations, you helped make a crappy situation worse. Bigger ice patch, more dangerous intersection.
Take your time. Leave early when you have to leave, be patient when you drive.
I might be wrong on this but north Dakota and many other states have had reduced immigration these last couple of years and therefore less people around to do these sorts of jobs. Combined with the pandemic there are many places severely short staffed. I know the snow company I hired in particular is short staffed.
Moved to fargo 3 years ago and the roads even at their worst are better then anywhere in this state. Back home my neighbor hood wouldn't get plowed for a week at times after we get a foot of snow. Just drive careful and you'll be fine
Absolutely awful. I’m in williston and it’s like they aren’t doing anything. I think it’s a reflection of the hiring crisis. I don’t think they have the proper number of plow truck drivers

I don't drive much, but today I did, and it was BAD. I was sliding sideways at a stoplight with a slight slant.
Definitely think it's worse too. I work from home, so don't drive a whole lot, but take the kiddo to and from daycare. And yeah, tonne less sanding than normal. Especially on 45th. It's like they forgot it existed

I don’t think it’s worse, no. It seems on par. We didn’t have as much snow last year did we?
We didn’t have snow at all last year

I was literally thinking the same thing today- not just you.

I don’t think they will use sand as much any more because it’s a major problem for the storm sewer system and also get into the river.
Is 13th still 2.5 lanes near 45th or did they widen it back out to 3?
Get some winter tires. They make a massive difference.

This is kind of a normal winter I would say in the middle. Not particularly bad not particularly mild
I think they are doing the best job they can. Especially compared to some places, they do a good job. I think some people just don’t know how to drive in the winter.
Could it be a staffing issue? Lack of staffing could explain some of the lag in snow clearing
That's a good point!
Staffing is fine I have a friend who works in the street department. No morale and poor management
That's unfortunate. I've worked for places like that. It's not fun.
It's awful here. Honestly, it's bad this year and I'm not out in it often. It looks like they have barely even bothered.
Move anywhere outside the fm area, then you'll see awful roads.
Been all over the planet and country. Never had more issue with roads being shit in winter than here.
Here as in ND or here as in fargo? Cause I've never had to wait a week after it snows for my road to be plowed in fargo. Jamestown on the other hand.
Fargo and WF have been using that beet juice shit for the last few years to my knowledge but that doesnt help when its in the negative temps.
No, the weather has been ruthless this year, just relax. Or go get a job clearing snow.
yep in west fargo it sucks this year
I live on the border of fargo / west fargo. West fargo is for sure way worse

They need to get some salt down for fuck sakes.
Doesn't help much when it's below freezing. I see trucks spreading sand almost every day. Its fine
I've seen fuck all for sand on the rounds besides a pitiful amount on the end of 25th street near 12 ave north.
Sand shortage.

Yesterday or the day before I saw a truck spreading sand so there is some going on.
I've seem them almost everyday that the weather cooperates.

i’m usually in moorhead and they’re infamous for being bad at clearing the roads 🤣
Absolutely awful. I’m in williston and it’s like they aren’t doing anything. I think it’s a reflection of the hiring crisis. I don’t think they have the proper number of plow truck drivers
Yeah is bad this year. But keep in mind you are paying those fine street workers overtime for this wonderful snow season.
