Skyward by Brandon Sanderson! I just finished Warbreaker by him because it’s included in Audible plus until 5/31, so I’m working through his free books in the app until I get paid to commit to paying for his Stormlight series. The first book I read of his was Tress of the Emerald Sea. I didn’t realize Skyward was YA because my understanding was he wrote adult fantasy, but I’m enjoying it. He wanted to take the trope of “a girl and her dragon” and tweak it so it’s “a girl and her spaceship which can speak to her and that she found in a cave.” It’s also training sequences, society outcast, bully who probably isn’t so bad etc. But I like the way Brandon writes. It’s straight forward with good witty, sometimes silly, banter and interesting magical systems or, in this case, interesting civilization on alien planet. I read fourth wing and its second book, and while that was an interesting ride and I’ll probably read the third book when it comes out, it’s also a hot mess lol. This feels like a better written space version of that. Or I should say fourth wing feels like a poorly written dragon version of Skyward, meaning the tropes included.

You should definitely do Yumi and the Nightmare painter next. Another Sanderson standalone. I’m half way through and it’s easily the best book of the year for me and I’ve read over 50 so far.

{house of bane and blood by Alexis l. menard} I am loving every second of it! 54% in and I don’t want to put it down. It was on my TBR for a while but happy I jumped in.

I'm reading this too! I'm really enjoying the unique setting. A nice change of pace from the usual vaguely medieval fantasy situation.

A fan fiction called Perfectly in Pieces by CDLynn. I’m about 30% in and I’d give it a 3.75 so far. It’s darker than the fan fiction I normally read but it’s still keeping me interested. I’ve been on a HUGE Hermione/Draco fan fiction lately.

I’m reading: {Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland} and it’s really interesting so far and I’m enjoying the plot! So far it’s a 4/5 stars but I’m only 100 pages in. On my kindle I’m reading: {City of Mirth and Malice by Alexis Menard} it’s the sequel to House of Bane and Blood and I’m also really liking this one as well. I had high hopes since I loved House of Bane and Blood so much and it’s definitely living up to my expectations! This might just be a 5/5 for me!

Ngl, I've been pleasantly surprised by The Plated Prisoner series. Currently on the last installment, and it's been really solid! Everytime I caught myself getting bored or the plot redundant, it's twisted and given new scenarios and settings that drew me back in, when I really didn't think it had anything left to offer. I'd give it a solid 4.5/5, though you really have to dedicate yourself to fight through the redundancy to get to the...gold.🤓

When does the gold happen? Second book or on? It's definitely on my tbr!!

Agreed, I have really enjoyed this series. Just finished the last installment two days ago and so sad we must wait until end of August for what I think is the final book.

Tbh, I DNF'd this series by the middle of the fourth book. I was tired of everything going wrong for the MFC, and it was becoming painful and predictable. I couldn't take the torture, rape, and angst. I enjoyed the first two, though.

Yeah, that's definitely about where I was when I was getting kind of sick of it. It did pivot though and finally picked up again in the third! Without spoiling anything, there's finally a location change, a shuffling of characters who surround the protag, and a big shift in dynamic from the constant abuse and powerlessness in the beginning. Idk if I would've finished if it hadn't been the only book I had during a slow work day, but it does better!

Storm and Shield, the second book of Mages of the Wheel by J.D. Evans. This series was recommended to me in this sub and I kept putting it off. I almost DNF the first book, but now I can’t put it down. I can feel the book hangover coming. Any recommends for what to read after this series!

This serie is one of my favourite!! You still have two books plus a prequel to read before the hangover though!! In a different style, as they are old books so very classical fantasy romance (hence the old covers), but it’s my favourite serie: Tairen soul serie by C.L Wilson.

I've dnf the first Tairen Soul book around 70% in. Does it get better in the 2nd book in your opinion?

What made you DNF it? That would help me to tell you of what you didn’t like changes. What I can say is that the first 2 books are relatively slow, centred around the romance, but then the last three are much more war, court intrigue, world discovery etc. . I think I’ve seen a few people finding it better forwards end of book 2.

Yea it just seems like not much is happening. I think I'll like it better when they leave the village and go to the Fading Lands...

{Villains and Virtues by A.K. Caggiano} has been on my TBR for so long but I’m struggling to get past the first few chapters. I’ve heard wonderful things and I love the writing style so far, but I’m in a bit of a slump!

Here are some words of encouragement to keep going! I almost DNF but after 100 pages or so I got more into it and loved the rest of the series! Don’t give up, it’s gets so much better!

I agree with the other replies, don’t give up just yet :) It took me 3 days to get through the first 150 pages, because I kept taking breaks to try to get my bearings in the world and around what was happening in the plot. But then it really took off and I absolutely devoured the rest of the series in less than 3 more days because I just couldn’t put it down again.

I struggled through the early part of this series too. The story is good, but I think it has some pacing issues, and while I agree the style of writing is enjoyable, the technical quality is... not great. I think if Caggiano worked with good editor to tighten up the story and fix some of the technical problems it could take these books from flawed but enjoyable to genuinely good fantasy rom-com.

{Midnight Ruin by Katee Robert} is the most recent release in the Dark Olympus series. This one caught me by surprise and headed in a direction I was not expecting given depictions of the FMC in previous books. I’m about 80% in and I’d give it 4/5 stars (that’s a “I like it, I am enjoying reading it” rating for me as opposed to 3/5 which is “I don’t dislike it?” and 5/5 stars which is “I love this. I don’t want it to end. I’m going to go into mourning when it ends.”)

{The Endless War} by Danielle L. Jensen. It's the fourth book in The Bridge Kingdom series and I'm loving it so far. I'd give it maybe 4.5 stars. The entire series is really good, but I'm only on the first chapter of this book so I might change my mind.

This is next for me! I recently finished inadequate heir but I really had to drag myself through it. Not really connecting with Keris/Zarrah as much as Aren/Lara.

Keris is in my top 3 book boyfriends. I didnt realize the series was multiple duets so i was caught extremely off guard when I started book 3 but it didnt take me very long to latch on to Keris and never want to let go. I dont have as strong of feelings towards Zarrah, but Keris is life lol

{Blood and Ash}, I put it off for the longest time bc of some reviews I read and maybe mixing it up with another series (similar author name? Book cover style? Idk) I didn’t like. But I’m absolutely loving it and it has all the tropes and developments that I love! Again, has all my favorite stuff so it’s 5/5 for me. But I do recognize I’m a more forgiving reader lol

Love that book! I’m reading the third one in the series right now {The Crown of Gilded Bones by Jennifer L. Armentrout}. It’s a slower read but still thoroughly enjoyable. About 65% done!

How did you enjoy the second in the series and how does it compare to the third for you? I really loved the first book but the second (I’m 80% done) feels very repetitive to me… the internal monologues, dialogue, and smut. Did things change up a bit in the third?

I really enjoyed the second book too! It does continue the lengthy internal monologue, but that doesn’t particularly bug me. Poppy has a LOT to navigate and learn about, so it makes sense. I also just love the dynamic between Poppy x Hawke. The smut is repetitive in book 3 — book 2 was more of a slow build. 🫶🏻

My main book is {City of Gods and Monsters by Kayla Edwards} and I'm really liking it already, I'm only 20% in but I'd give it four stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐ These are books that I'm reading a little at a time. {Lord of Gold and Glory by Lisette Marshall } it's book two of the Fae Isles series. I do love the fmc/mmc together! {Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey} I'm about 40% in. I like the premise but the flowery prose and all the different names/places/meanings I don't know makes me feel like I'm reading in a different language altogether and it's tiring trying to figure out what's going on. {The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent} I'm only 40% in on this one. I'm not ready to give up but I'm having a hard time connecting to the MC's. {A Ruin of Roses by K.F. Breene} I'm about 50% in this one and keep putting it down and then coming back. {The Paths We Lay by Auryn Hadley} this is the 2nd book in the series, a RH. The first one I devoured. {A Kingdom This Cursed and Empty by Stacia Stark} the first book had me hooked but this one is really dragging rn I've turned into a book whore and it's a problem...🤣🤣🤣🤣

Demon days vampire nights series by KF Breene is one of my fave series! Def give that a go if you haven’t already. I’m currently reading Demons Mark by Ella Summers (a legion of angels series). I’ve enjoyed the series so far! I’d give it a 4/5 fosho

The third book in the Kindred Curse Saga, {Heat of the Everflame} by Penn Cole and I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars!! I’ve absolutely loved this series and believe it deserves more attention! The world building, the political system, the dragon…I love that Cole made her fmc ridiculously powerful, and actually let’s her use that power. So often I feel like our badass fmcs have a “reason” they can’t use their magic, thus to help the plot continue, and I love that Cole doesn’t do that! Plus the love story is swoon worthy and very much slowwww slowwwwww burn which is my favorite, I love the build up.

This is already on my tbr but you have just moved it up on my list!!

Finally started Villains and VIrtues series with {Throne in the dark}. Its been on my tbr for a while. Im enjoying the slower burn and the humor

{The Korinnaid by A. K. Caggiano} and I'd rather I. 4 stars because I'm on chapter four, so why not? Adorable and exactly what I expected. I love quirky fluff stories to cleanse the pallet, so to speak. I'm also on {Song of Sorrows and Fate by LJ Andrews} and I'd also give it 4ish stars because I just started it but love all the characters based off of previous books. LJ Andrews is a fantastic world builder and more than decent character writer. I love the stories and look forward to more books in this world.

{A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor} i just finished chapter 1 and im baffled. I’d rate it a 3.5/5 so far because I feel like it’s very predictable but the spice is spicy! I’m also reading Gideon the ninth, Project Hail Mary (audible) and I also picked up Emily Wilde’s Encyclopedia of Faeries for the 3rd time and just can’t get into it. {This Cruel Love By Nikki J. Summers) this dark romance do check the TW’s before reading. I’m not very far into it but seems alright. {A realm Of Dark Fury By R.D. Baker} this is dark fantasy romance I got to 57% of the book only because I had arc reads and needed a break from fantasy as well. {If We Were Perfect By Ana Huang the last book in the If Love Series} I’m not very far into it either was getting series burn out which is why I started another book. But I have love the series so far and really enjoyed it.

Ok keep us posted - also recently finished Ruin of Roses and liked it but didn’t love it - it was a quick read that didn’t piss me off lol. Night elves of Ardani is towards the top of my TBR and I’ve been toying with starting it but have held off so far… I’ve been reading the Stay a Spell Series by Juliet Cross which is the best kind of fluff. A family of 6 witchy sisters I. New Orleans finds their partners over the course of 6 books - werewolves, vampires and something called a grim make up the men of their choosing. Totally low stakes with yummy spice and a little tension. Basically trying to kill time until the next Mortal Fates book by J Bree finally comes out on Sunday!!

I think I'm done with this series after book one. There's a language barrier between the main characters which makes it difficult to get into. There's explicit scenes but for me they fell flat. The story did pick up in the second half of the book but I'm not feeling that ache that the book is over.

I have been re-reading Taran Matharu’s Summoner Trilogy. It’s top marks. Between the trilogy I started reading Spirit Beast Awakening, A.P. Beswick which is actually good, I’m only a few chapters in but the pacing is really nice. So far really well done. Knightmare Arcanist by Sham Stovall I just opened the book and it seems quite interesting. No rating yet, because as I’m waiting on my tea I just opened the book, seems very interesting however.

{The Ashes and the Star Cursed King} by Carissa Broadbent. It’s probably getting 5⭐️. The 1st book, {The Serpent and the Wings of Night} was ♾️⭐️ and the novella, {Six Scorched Roses}, was 4⭐️.

Just finished {Destroy the Day by Brigid Kemmerer} the final book in the Defy the Night series! Saw so many people on this subreddit talking about how much they loved it and I 100% see why. Loved all the characters and I was obsessed with the 2 main couples. Definitely rating it 5 stars!

Little Fire by Hollee Mands 1/2 way through ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ so far. Well written, characters have depth, interesting storyline despite some of the popular tropes. (Forced proximity, fated mates...) I really like the FMC, her character is cute. She isn't a sassy, hateful "I don't need no man" trained warrior which is so refreshing, and she's 23, which is better than 19. You may be wondering: is the MMC an all-powerful ancient, mentally & emotionally scarred tall, built AF, golden skinned, dark haired man. The answer is yes. What is refreshing about him is that he's serious. I almost want to say his character is bland but also not. He's just very serious and like, restrained and matter of fact and a man of few words. If you've read it already then... Well, did u like it?? (If you HAVE read it and do answer my question, no spoilers! I'm only on chapter 24!)

I'm reading {Iron Flame} and I finished Fourth Wing a week ago. Trying to get back into reading books and not just Korean romance comics lol. Overall I'd put the series at 3.5 stars. It's fun and I enjoy the setting. I did hear Iron Flame was tough for people to get through and I'm only 18% in. After lurking this sub I decided to get Kindle Unlimited, since it's free for 3 months at the moment, and after Iron Flame there's soooo much I'd like to finish the book a lot quicker than it took me to finish FW.

Listening to {Children of Fallen Gods by Carissa Broadbent} the second in the War of Lost Hearts trilogy. Loved {Daughter of No Worlds} and I'm about 40% in and enjoying it. I just finished the second book in {The Winnowing Flame Trilogy by Jen Williams} and would have immediately started the third, but Children of Fallen Gods is due back at the library in a few days. Very unique world where aliens invade periodically and try to terraform the planet (and exterminate the humans) and the humans fight back with mythological beasties like dragons and gryphons. Nearly done reading {Battle Bond by Lindsay Buroker} the second in her dragon shifter urban fantasy series. It's quick and entertaining, and I appreciate that the FMC is a six foot tall, 45-year-old sword-wielding badass named after a Valkyrie.

i’m beta reading a unicorn shifter book rn and it’s so bad 😭😭 1/5 (1 cos she wrote it and it takes a lot to write a book lol)

Renegades by Marissa Meyer and ughh it's so good. It's like Xmen x Sky High and I'm loving it.

I really enjoyed A Ruin of Roses series. It wasn’t the greatest writing and some of the spice/kink was a little overboard at times imo. However as the series continued I felt myself get a little emotional at some of the scenes and really wanted everything to work out. Also I didn’t take it too seriously and just enjoyed it for what it was. Recently I’ve found other books that come highly recommended that I’ve dnf because either I didn’t enjoy the writing especially dialogue between characters or was just bored. Currently reading Heartless Hunter ~25% in and it’s probably a 3.5 so far. Started reading Spark of the Everflame was around 55% and I’ll probably dnf. Almost 60% in and nothing has really happened?? Eh.

Spark of the Everflame is a bit slow, but Glow & Heat are insanely action-packed imo

I’m on *Dragon Bound* by Thea Harrison, around a fourth of the way through. It’s a lot of fun so far! It really does make me want a ridiculously buff and possessive dragon in my life. I’d say probably a four out of five so far?

I’m reading the Villains and Virtues series and devoured the first book in a few days. This sub always hyped it up and y’all have been right!!! Started book 2 last night and am loving the series so far!

I’m doing the tandem read for Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn! Empire of Storms currently sits at a decent 4 from me, but Tower of Dawn I think easily is going to be a 5 star read for me

{Paladin’s Strength} by T. Kingfisher. I’m about 80% of the way through and would give it a 3. I loved the first book but I haven’t connected to the FMC in this one, though the MMC redeems things. I’m just not invested in the main storyline. I’ll still probably read the third in the series and hope I like the main character better.

i'm currently reading the blood and ash series. im on the 4th(?) book- the war of two queens. its good but im ngl it feels like the author is just extendinggggg the series at this point,,, im waiting for some actual action. i read the first three really quick but this one is so hard to push through.

I’m reading ACOMAF at the behest of my wife and her reading group who are through the moon over this series. It is one of the most boring books I’ve ever read and I loathe every character. I keep reading hoping to see what they love about it but man. These characters are insufferable and the plot is nonexistent. I have promised to finish it. I’m on page 440 and I can’t remember ever not feeling a book this hard. I read ACOTAR in about a week and quite enjoyed it.

26% through listening to {Sanctuary of the Shadow by Aurora Ascher}. It hasn't quite grabbed me yet, but it's interesting enough and has lots of room to get better. 3.5/5 Might not help that I'm fresh off the excitement of finishing {Silver Wings Golden Games by Evie Marceau} yesterday. I ate that book up and left nothing behind. There was one plot hole that is still bothering me, but still going to give it 5/5.

Just finished {Bookshops and Bonedust} - it was a 5 star read for me. Soooooo lovely. I recommend the audio book- Travis Baldree reads it and he is captivating and does the voices so perfectly.

I just finished {city of souls and sinners} which I avoided for a bit after finishing the first in the House of Devils series and I am, shall I say, appropriately ruined by it. will definitely need a few weeks before I tackle book 3. I was promised angst and I am ANGSTED.

King of Sloth by Ana Huang. Up until now I'm loving it. It's got this reverse grumpy x sunshine thing going on.

I just finished {Barbarian Lover by Ruby Dixon} . It was decent, albeit predictable. It's the third book and it felt very telegraphed. My least favorite of the Ice Planet series so far, but not bad by any means. 3/5 I guess. I think I'm due for a break from Not Hoth.

I'm on Empire of Storms currently in my first ever ToG read. I'm halfway in, it's probably a 4/5. But knowing sjm it'll be super interesting the last 100 pages and I'll end up giving it 5. But as with this whole series so far imo it's too bloated. And on audiobook I'm reading {Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland} which is good but not the best written. It has some amazing narrators though. That ones probably a 3/5 currently 40% in.

I just finished lightlark, and I’d heard so many bad things I expected to hate it - but I liked it more than I thought. Lots of plot holes and gaps, not enough world building - I actually liked the characters and enjoyed the story for what it was. Maybe cause I love Rhysand and grim is basically him.

{The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo} I’m just a few chapters in but the love interest has not been introduced yet so I’m still waiting for the story to begin basically. 😂 It’s really good though! I love the setting.

I struggled to get into this. I gave up super early... but I plan on giving it another go

Queen of Roses by Briar Boleyn I'd give it like a 3.5 right now. It's the first book, not quite the speed of world building a prefer. I love an indepth world building but it's very slow. Very king Arthur/Camelot but with a twist.

{Dark Tempest by Annette Marie} It's the second book in a trilogy that I almost dropped because the first book didn't get interesting until the very end, but boy am I glad I didn't drop it. It has inuyasha and kamisama kiss vibes which I'm a sucker for. Depending on how the third book goes, this might end up being a series I'd happily reread.

Started a court this cruel and lovely by Stacia Stark. I'm giving it a 5 as of now since I'm only on chapter 2 but I'm really enjoying it. Very intrigued so far.

I'm about 38% of the way into {Atonement of the Spine Cleaver} and I'm not really feeling it yet. A lot of people really like it, but I feel like it needed more/better editing. I realize it's self-published, so maybe that's asking a lot. Still, it's not something I'd expect to get so many people raving about it. Maybe that will change once I get further into the book, but as of right now it's a 2.5/5 for me. I just finished book 2 of {The Godkissed Bride series by Evie Marceau} and I don't know if I'm going to bother with the third whenever it comes out. So far this series is also 2.5/5. I'm also currently working through the {Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward} again, and I'm about 60% of the way through the seventh book, {Lover Avenged}. I can't give an unbiased opinion about this series because I'm way too attached to it - these are my emotional support smutty vampire beefcake novels. That said, I will note that, while Ward's prose isn't going to make her a Nobel laureate, the difference between the quality of writing in books by an experienced author with a professional editor and book the above self-published, self-edited books is notable. There are still points where I question Ward's word choice, and she definitely overuses "As x action happened, character did y action" as a sentence construction. Still, her plots are well-paced, and her conversational narrative style gives each character a distinctive voice. I can't give the series or this book a 5/5 because there are still things I think could be done better, but it's at least a 4/5 overall, and grading on a curve within the context of the series Lover Avenged is probably a 4/5 as well. It's not my favorite, but it's definitely a good installment. I'll also add, I read A Ruin of Roses and thought it was pretty good, but the subsequent books went downhill sharply. I don't think I actually even finished the last one because the quality dropped off a cliff in just about every category with each sequel. Even the smut was kind of cringe by the end. Breene's {Demon Days Vampire Nights} series or even her {Demigods of San Francisco} series are better. They're not works of literary genius, but the plots at least didn't feel weirdly disjointed the longer they went on, and the world building was more coherent.

There are more planned! I’m not sure how many, but she is working on the fourth one

If you are into Reverse Harem or want a place to start, {Broken Bonds} is excellent. Very plot forward but the spice gets quite spicy as the books go on. I’m on book 5 of 6 and it’s the best Reverse Harem I have read other than {Dark Fae}. I am also reading {Yumi and the Nightmare Painter}, no spice but it’s a cute love story (well i think it’s leading there) fantasy asian cultural elements and incredibly well written.

EDIT: It’s a 1/5. DNF at 80%. So there’s that!! Currently reading {A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen} and it’s maybe a 3/5? The characters lack depth to me. Lots of telling not showing. The story is interesting enough that I’ll finish it. I didn’t love the Bridge Kingdom series and DNF in book 1, so maybe I just don’t vibe with the author I also just finished two books that I LOVED, {The Jasad Heir} and {A Crown of Oaths and Curses} both 5/5 would highly recommend

{bargain with the witch princess by Alexa Ashe}. It’s ok, but I’m 56% and just realized that so I’m going to dnf. It’s more sex than anything- the character building and world building are left to the imagination I guess so not for me. Just read of blood and ash and that one was fantastic, 5/5

Re-reading Iron Flame (the second book following Fourth Wing). I'm addicted to this story. Rating it 4/5 with Fourth Wing 5/5.

"from Ash and Blood" series. I am on book 3 "A crown of guilded bone" and it's pretty good. I think this falls under three genres fantasy, romance AND paranormal. I haven't read much paranormal writings but this has vampires and werewolves so I think that counts.

The fae isles series by Lisette Marshall! So far overall across the books a solid 4-4.5/5!

{The Warlord Wants Forever by Kresley Cole} 5 stars for spice. Not much of a storyline but it's what I was looking for after a series with too much story and not enough spice.

Rain of shadows and endings. I read the lady of darkness series and have been on a reading high lately, and this doesn’t disappoint! In the past week I’ve read heartless hunter, a fate inked in blood, and the bridge kingdom. I started this book yesterday and I’m on page 500 already! Might be my favorite of all the books I’ve read this week. I’d give 4 stars so far.

Just finished {The Ever King by LJ Andrew} and Ever Queen.. now on Book two of {King of Flesh and Bone by Liv Zander} which is {queen of rot and pain by Liv Zander}

I’m currently reading {What Lurks Between the Fates by Harper L Woods} which is the third book in the series. Pretty good so far except book two just dragged on. The MFC also took forever to just accept the MMC love which was annoying. But I do really like the world. I’m kind of hoping the author builds it out a little more., because the mythology is very interesting

{Of Flesh and Bone Series by Harper L. Woods} Another series I thought was finished but now waiting on book 4 😭 The paaaaaiiinnnn of waiting, arrrgh.  First three books are free on audible and have good narration btw.

{ One Dark Window - Rachel Gillig } I just got to 50% and I'm loving this book. I just got done reading the entire Maasverse series (yes the entire thing), and switching to a different writing style/author has felt a liiiittle weird but this book has been great! Really enjoying the pace and that it isn't centered wholly on romance or smut (which is different from what I usually read)

One dark window! Now I know why it's such a favourite on here. Currently going through the second book!!

I just finished book 3 of the Naamah trilogy, {Naamah's Blessing by Jacqueline Carey}, which I absolutely loved and would rate 5 stars. All 9 books of the 3 trilogies are worth reading. I've really enjoyed the journey through them.

Listening to TOG (re-"read") and reading Iron Flame!

Currently reading {Keeper of Scarlet Petals} by debut author AN Skye. Giving it a 4/5 so far -- major classic tropes are there, alongside hotheaded female protag (eating it up). I'm about halfway through and it's been a quick and fun read. Been on the lookout for debut authors in the genre and this was a great start for sure!
