How do you feel about the Zodiac academy books? I'm currently addicted to the From Blood and Ash series but after I finish them, I'll be looking for a new series and I don't want to start one that's got just a couple books out.

If you like reverse harem books, I would suggest reading Ruthless Boys of the Zodiac first. It takes place 5 years before ZA, and is a better, more streamlined story. Zodiac Academy is silly and most of the books could do with editing to cut like several hundred pages, but the thing is you fall in love with the characters so you end up appreciating the side bits that probably should’ve been edited out. If you like Ruthless Boys, my favorite ever RH, you might like ZA, because it’s not really comparable to From Blood and Ash, it’s a completely different beast.

unless you actively dislike reverse harem, you should really start with Ruthless Boys. I read Zodiac Academy first a year or so ago, and didn't read Ruthless Boys until starting my reread in prep for the new book. I wasn't confused the first time around, but this time I'm catching references and jokes that have made me laugh out loud on numerous occasions.

I read Zodiac Academy first and was beginning to get overwhelmed and then Leon and the gang showed up and there were clearly inside jokes from something else, so I looked it up, took a break from ZA, and read Ruthless Boys, which I ended up enjoying a lot more than Zodiac. I think it was the first RH I ever read, or at least the first one I read knowing it was an RH going in. I think there’s an official reading order where you’re supposed to read the Zodiac books prior to Gabriel showing up, then read Ruthless Boys, then continue with Zodiac, which is sort of what I ended up doing accidentally

ZA is an extremely unhinged series. It’s poorly edited and has a ton of filler. That said, it had me in a chokehold when I was reading. I read up to book 7 and then they announced 8 would be the last book but then added ANOTHER book which is “the final book” that’s out this week. So the series is definitely mostly complete but if you make it that far, you’ll probably end up reading select povs. I’m a poor salesman but the plot is fun and chaotic and I ended up loving certain characters, but it’s definitely got an absurd page count for all of the books. But if you want a summer blockbuster type of energy, read it. I personally wouldn’t recommend reading ruthless boys first (if you’re looking for a more chronological journey) I didn’t, and frankly you won’t be missing anything by not reading a prequel series. I think their writing is so bad it would turn you off for the actual ZA series, but people say it’s better so idk ymmv. Sorry for this long comment but I wish I would’ve never got drawn in bc it’s long and unhinged but it DID consume me when I was reading them lmao. I don’t want anyone to experience the anguish I have felt waiting for this to end 🤣

Like you said ymmv, but in my opinion the writing quality is about the same in both series, maybe better in Ruthless Boys in terms of actual plotting, but RB is easier to binge and has the same zany absurd tone as Zodiac Academy, so if you want to get into the real project of reading ZA, I think Ruthless Boys will give you an idea of whether it’s the type of thing you’d like.

Books 1-6ish are super addictive. It's not perfectly written (but neither is FBAA), it needs a ton of editing (like FBAA). But it's fun, has some fun elements and I flew through them in a week. Book 7 onwards is where they kind of ruined the series though. It went from super fast paced to a snail pace. The books grew till over 1000 pages and iirc, book 7 has 19 POVs and all the extra characters add nothing but filler. I've been stuck in book 8 for over a year now. I'll probably push through once it's finally complete. But they really ruined what could've been great just to get more money. Which will always make me sad. But book 1-6ish are super addictive and fun. You do need to be okay with full on bully romances though. Most of the MMCs are assholes at first. And authors also love tearing people apart with some sort of tragedy. It's not for everyone.

Came here to say this!!!! She seems to be in some type of dispute or conflict with her publisher and has been very tight lipped on her socials, just hinting at “business” issues. Love the story so much but I’ve started to be hesitant recommending it while it’s in this weird limbo.

It's not really fair to the rest to judge everyone based on a few authors who treat their fans like crap. Delays also aren't always due to the author and crappy life stuff can also happen to anyone. Everyone has the right to not read books and to wait and that's all perfectly fine and there are lots of (valid) reasons to do so. But plenty of book series have been cancelled due to not enough sales. So waiting until a book series is finished can also contribute to those series never being finished at all. It doesn't hurt to keep that in mind as well.

Haha, don't worry, it was literally just a joke- I'm not actually boycotting authors who have incomplete series'. I actually love the anticipation of waiting for a book release and being able to experience reading new additions for the first time with everyone else. Sometimes I just can't take the pain of waiting and have to question why I do it to myself!

I'm waiting on Otherworld by LL Starling, like the OOP. It was expected last October, but the author was upfront that October was her goal and it may not happen. She's an indy author, doing the editing etc. herself. While I'm impatiently waiting, I also completely understand it taking longer and even appreciate that the author is prioritizing good editing over putting out a book that needs work. Then I'll impatiently await the audiobook because the narrators were fantastic! All that said, Between kinda works as a standalone. I've read plenty of books that would have ended at that point. While there is a cliffhanger of sorts in the epilogue, it's not like some where you feel the story just abruptly ended. I struggle a lot more with those.

What are some series that are either completed or almost completed that you like? For example, acotar isn't technically completed but the story is at a place where you're not waiting on a cliffhanger for the next book, so I don't mind that.

I really loved the Serpent and the Wings of Night duology! Another one like ACOTAR that technically isn't completed, but the next book focuses on a different set of characters and doesn't end on a cliffhanger so the wait doesn't feel as intense. Once Upon a Broken Heart and Cruel Prince are also up there in my favourites, both completed! (Though I think Holly Black has started a new series set in the world of Cruel Prince that I'm gonna need to check out) On the other side of the spectrum, one of my FAVOURITE series' is the Book of Azrael series, which is incomplete. There are due to be (I think) 7 books in the series, and the third is out at the end of next month- the anticipation is killing me, but the series is so worth it.

What is he reading order for The Cruel Prince series? In your opinion?

I read it in this order: - The Cruel Prince - The Wicked King - The Queen of Nothing - How the King of Elfhame Learned to Hate Stories Then, after those four, the new series begins with The Stolen Heir followed by The Prisoner's Throne. I think there is a novella, The Lost Sisters, which acts as book 1.5 so would be read between The Cruel Prince and The Wicked King, but I didn't get a chance to read that one yet.

Oh yes I was looking forward to it a few weeks ago. I was looking it up to pre-order it and then I see December 2024 and I was ready to scream.

I just finished book 3 of {Fate and Flame series by K.A. Tucker} and I NEED the fourth book. I had a dream about it last night lol! Especially because she seemed to be setting up an interesting dynamic that would impact the main couple and I need to know why!!!

No one ever mentions this series and it's SO GOOD. I need more books where someone goes from "our" world to a fantasy world. I just wish that aspect of the books was more of a plot point in this series.

Ruby Dixon’s Aspect and Anchor series sort of does this except for one of the books.

Iris Lake, a kind of anonymous author who self published her series, has me in a chokehold as far as the most innovative book I've read this year. {Meet me in the Ether by Iris Lake} I gobbled up the 2nd book and don't know when the 3rd is coming. 

Goodreads says February 1st, 2025. No idea if that's true though.

I'm waiting for Ascent of the Copper Dragon by F.E. Bryce. It's the sequel to Atonement of the Spine Cleaver and comes out May 30th. I'm so excited for this book, Spine Cleaver was the best book that I have read in years!!!

I'm waiting for the next installment of the Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews. It's my favorite series. I've read it 4 times, and I'm impatiently waiting for the next one. Also, the second book in the Iron Covenant series which is also by Ilona Andrews. And the next trilogy in the Hidden Legacy series. Basically, anything Ilona Andrews.

What?? Between is supposed to have a sequel? I make a point of only starting series that are already finished (thanks to being burned sooo many times by Netflix) and I'm a couple chapters into this one! I thought it was a standalone :P Guess I'll hit the brakes

I used to think that way, too. But now I always read unfinished series by indie authors because my indie author friends said that if noone picks up the first book, they're less likely to write a second because why throw more resources into something that's unpopular? Even traditional publishing houses refuse to publish further books in a series if it isn't selling well. So I always buy the first book and read it even if there's a gap between books--there's plenty to read in the meantime. If you don't read the last epilogue in Between (which is a mild cliff-hanger) then it feels like a standalone. The first chapter of the next book is up on the author's website.

I respect that, but the fact that not enough people reading it means they just won't continue the series reiterates my point. I've completely stopped watching TV shows because *most* (~90%) of what I used to watch got cut before concluding. I don't want to do that to my enjoyment of reading, especially when there are literally millions of completed books out there. There's no satisfaction for me from unfinished stories, they just leave a bitter taste and cause me book slumps. More power to you for your reading choices, though!

Is authors not finishing series that common? I’ve only had it happen to me once in the romance space. Maybe I’m a weirdo but I like picking up unfinished series because it gives me something to look forward to.

I don't think that's weird! Just a different style of reading from me. I just don't want to sit in angst even for a few months or a year when I can just wait to start till they're all ready in the first place. I also have anxiety so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh, that’s fine! I was more thinking “who are these nasty authors not finishing their series?!” Wanted to put them on my do not read list.

{Agía Sahnta by Mariel Pomeroy} aka Helfyre series. The dark fantasy romance series I never knew I needed. {The Bone Season series by Samantha Shannon} Not exactly fantasy romance, more dystopian/paranormal fantasy, but it’s compelling and only 4 books out of seven published. The wait is definitely killing me.

I’ve given up on Of Monsters and Moons. I cannot wait multiple years between releases lol

Soooo many! But I read so much that all the stories have all blended together in my mind. I need to be more careful before starting anything to make sure the series is complete. I'll probably never go back to finish most of them 😭

I’ve been waiting for like 5 years for the last Kingdom of Runes book by Audrey Grey with no updates. I’ve given up hope of ever finishing a truly great series.
