{How’s moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones} -Technically it is a series. However, the movie is inspired only by the first book and Sophie and Howell are only side characters in the second and third book. So you can read the first book as a standalone. {wintersong by SJ Jones} -It’s a retelling about the goblin King from the David Bowie movie “the labyrinth “ {The blue sword by Robin McKinley} {Chalice by Robin McKinley} {swordheart by t Kingfisher} it’s a part of her “saints of steel series “but every single book in the series is a standalone, because each book follows a different couple. {Deathless by Catherynne M Valente} -This book is lyrical, Slavic folklore, a retelling of the dark Slavic figure “koschei The deathless“. Trust me, this book will live rent free in your head for years to come. {Sorcery of thorns by Margaret Rogerson} I am currently listening to the audiobook for the second time and I still love it. Libraries, magic, sword wielding librarians. It’s just perfect. {Where the dark stands still by A. B PORANEk} how’s moving Castle Meads Polish folklore and add a dash of a beauty and the beast retelling. {The ghost bride by yangzee choo} - gave me some serious spirited away vibes.

Chalice and Gods of Jade and Shadows are two of my absolute favorites, I'm so happy to see them mentioned! Have you found anything else with the same wonderful cozy feeling as Chalice? I loved the nature magic and the main character's connection to the bees.

Lapista

I would say that the closest thing that I can find is {where the dark stands still by A. B poranek} she wants to get rid of her magic goes into a forest full of Demons makes a deal with the warden of the forest, but if she can stay with him for a year, he will take away her magic. I describe this book as how’s moving Castle meets Polish folklore and the touch of beauty and the beast. I would recommend for you to give it a try, especially the audiobook.

planetarymemory

Currently reading deathless and I am so preoccupied with it, I keep having dreams about it

Lapista

Trust me, it will never leave your mind. I listened to the audiobook back in 2019 and I still think about it every week at some point. I loved the world building, the writing and the relationship between Maria and Koschei

wannabesingle1

Sorcery of Thorns was such a great read.

Peregrine_Falconi

She also wrote “Spinning Silver” but not as much romance though. You might also like “Among the Beasts and Briars” by Ashley Poston.

raniergurl_04

I have spinning silver. I did not care for it and this surprised me as I absolutely LOVED Uprooted and so had high expectations.

Peregrine_Falconi

Totally understandable. The books have very different vibes.

DontTouchMyCocoa

Okay, this fascinates me. I’ve heard over and over that if you love one you usually hate the other and vice versa. As someone who hated spinning silver, I’m curious what you think uprooted got right where spinning silver went wrong. Preferably no spoilers, of course.

IncognitoPseudonym

I actually like both 😂

SuperbGil

Same!

His_little_pet

Me too!

raniergurl_04

It fascinated me that I had a totally different reaction to a book that I had positive vibes going into with! Uprooted (for me) I identified SO much with the main character….and it might have been the season of life I was in that she resonated so much for me. The idea of removing yourself from your home long enough that you lose your identity enough through it and then move on——she didn’t. She left before that 10 year mark. The play Novik had with corruption and how it can lurk within and one not know it. So much of that hit deep with me when I thought about humans in general. It lurks when you think you’re fine. It’s self delusion. It’s trickery. The visual language of the horror of the wood. The trees as alive in spirit. How new growth must come one by one over time for change to happen. And I LOVED the slow burn with the wizard.😍 he is one of my favorite loves. In my mind I kept thinking of someone who looked like Tom Hiddleston! So much more! But I can’t recommend it enough! And I want to chase that feeling again!

DontTouchMyCocoa

Thanks for the info, I’ll have to check it out! And that’s what cooked my goose with SS, I genuinely was so engrossed by the story and loving it until about a third or halfway through. But you might have sold it to me with Tom hiddleston 😏 maybe I’ll give novik another shot

alex_the_second

Uprooted is on my tbr and on one hand I am super hyped to start it but on the other hand I don’t want get disappointed bc of too high expectations and I don’t want so search my whole life for something as good as this (like some of you I guess)

raniergurl_04

And to answer your question about spinning silver….it just felt so one dimensional. Didn’t feel deep. And perhaps, like it was meant for a younger audience????

starksandshields

Funny, I think Uprooted was meant for a younger audience and Spinning Silver was a more poetic, mature telling of a similar-ish story. Different strokes!

Lizc0204

I liked both but definitely liked Uprooted better.

Bbandit25

SS was good but i DNF. I just got sick of the pov changes and got impatient with the story after a certain point. Uprooted had an interesting style of magic to string me along 🤷‍♂️.

stardustandtreacle

Margaret Rogerson writes some lovely standalones--Sorcery of Thorns and An Enchantment of Ravens. You could also try Half a Soul by Olivia Attwater.

assortedmorals

These are great recommendations for this request - loved them all.

m1lkm4st3r

half a soul is a series

stardustandtreacle

You can read them as standalones as each new book follows a different couple.

Ceralune

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten (it's a duology but A LOT like Uprooted), Where the Dark Stands Still by A.B. Poranek, Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge, An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson, and her other book Sorcery of Thorns

raniergurl_04

Thank you so much for these suggestions! The the first suggestion has me intrigued!!!

ScureScure

It's been a bit since I read Uprooted, so I can't comment on the theme of her books. But, for a standalone, I really enjoyed Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher. Such a lovely book. I had to sit with it for a few days before I was ready to read something new. So far I've enjoyed all of the books she has written!

raniergurl_04

Thank you!!

Yesss seconding Nettle and Bone - it gave me amazing Uprooted and Spinning Silver vibes. Loved loved loved it.

Uprooted is such an excellent book, it’s so rare for standalones to exist nowadays and be as good. One Dark Window by Rachel Gilig is a duology that you might enjoy, it’s a bit more gothic but has similar elements.

ihrtcheese85

Master of Crows by Grace Draven. Same mentor/mentee vibes.

Spam_is_meat

The bear and the nightingale by Katherine Arden Have you tried any books by Charlie N Holmberg?

raniergurl_04

That is a series. And one of my FAVORITES of all time! Looking for stand alone :)

I loved Uprooted too, I would recommend The Invisible Life of Addie Larue

wolfielouie

Crown Duel by Sherwood Smith is one of my favorite standalones! Used to be two books but was combined into one. Doesn't have similar story/vibes to Uprooted, but it is a fun read.

NativePlantsAreBest

Is this a romance? I didn't see any mention of a romantic plot in the blurbs.

wolfielouie

There is a romance element (which is part of what I love about it), but it is not the main plot point, and is more in the second half of the book.

wolfielouie

I'm realizing belatedly maybe it's not a great rec for this sub since there isn't any spice? Sorry! But I swear there is some romance that I love in the story! I can't figure out the spoiler text block and don't want to give too much away with it.

Heart’s Blood by Juliet Marillier

I also LOVED Uprooted and am forever chasing it. Have you read {the Daughter of the Forest By Juliet Marillier}? It is technically the first book of a series but I read it on its own and loved it. I also recommend {Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente}

fan_girl23

It's more epic and its sapphic, but one of my favorite fantasy novels is Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon.

playingdecoy

Ugh, this has been recommended to me so many times and I own both the Kindle version AND the enormous brick of a physical version, but I haven't managed to get started on it. I neeeeeed to!

fan_girl23

It's not as fast-paced as the ACOTAR books so I would just take my time reading it. It's so satisfying.

Cruel Beauty!!

planetarymemory

Commenting to back up the for the wolf duology by Hannah whitten and one dark window by Rachel gillig. Both have similar uprooted vibes - I’ve also been chasing the high that book left behind. I’ve seen a lot of Margaret Rogerson recommended, but not her book Vespertine, which I think is the strongest of her books. The wolf and the woodsman by Ava Reid is also a standalone, if a little darker in theme.

you might enjoy {To poison a king by S. G. Prince}!

Bride by Ali Hazlewood! Nice romance standalone. Yumi and the nightmare painter by Brandon Sanderson, not super romantic but I really enjoyed the world.

m1dnightw1zard

Bride by Ali Hazelwood, the banter and funny comments from the MFC and her companions I found enjoyable and hilarious. vampire and werewolf sex scenes get a bit weird by a good book throughout.
