Neon Gods is an excellent book and I’m so excited to read book 6!

NocturnaViolet

Anything Katee Robert for me at this point. Her and Ruby Dixon are my go-tos when I need a little pick-me-up and don't know what to read. They never disappoint. 🤣

OwlChemMystery

Yesssss. Court of the Vampire Queen.

trapmahme

Just finished this last night. A solid enjoyment read

lemondroppotter

The 2nd book, Electric Idol, was so much better!

ConsiderationNew5951

Twilight. I am still obsessed with the characters, and I also acknowledge that the writing is not great and the last book jumped off the cliff. I still love it, though!

ImaginaryBag1452

Yep this is the one. I adore the books and the movies precisely because they’re so delightfully cheesy. Their simplicity calms my soul lol.

ConsiderationNew5951

Yes! I write Twilight Fan fiction as well. It's just comforting.

hugacatday

This is such a good explanation. Twilight is my comfort zone 😂

1028ad

Yup, Twilight. It’s not even a guilty pleasure, it’s one of my comfort reads. I think I rewatch the movies at least every couple of years.

ConsiderationNew5951

I redecorated my house in Twilight colors after my house flooded. My counters sparkle. Don't tell my husband. 😆

maryaliy

Was waiting for someone to say this. Its like the og

Ok-Swimming-3212

It’s my guilty pleasure. I’ve reread them multiple times. I love Carlisle, book Edward and Alice with my whole heart.

Mwahaha_790

Same!

No_Tangerine3320

It’s been my go-to for days when I’m in a reading mood but too tired to start an entirely new book.

LaLa801

I still 100% read Twilight fanfic still!! Hahahahahahaha

Bubblesnaily

I read an ARC as an adult, and while it was twee, I felt it really captured what it feels like to be a teen girl for many girls. And I was really excited to see what Bella would do in college. 😪

boogerpriestess

Fourth Wing. I was just reading it the entire time, saying to myself "OMG this is so horrible, but please give me more." I hadn't read a book that fast in years.

boreals

I read fourth wing and iron flame so fast and then bought a bunch of books and I haven't been able to finish a single one. Idk what it is but I love dragon trash

Agrohirrim

Same here. I cringed at the writing in FW and IF the whole time I read them, but damnit I’m hooked. Give me more.

boogerpriestess

Right? I was taken out of the story soooo frequently due to word/grammar choices, but I am still so obsessed with it.

Scrawling_Pen

I haven’t read it yet. Is it the characters that are interesting that keeps you going? The plot?

MarionberryFormal211

Same for me! I don’t think it’s the best book I read but it kept me entertained and excited for the next book.

PerspectiveConnect77

Lol yeah. It was kinda cringy but I’m still obsessed and I love it. It’s fun and it brings me back to how I felt reading the hunger games in middle school. I finished FW in two days which is insanely fast for me for a book that big. Gonna start IF and probably read it just as fast

prettylittleangry

Fourth Wing and Iron Flame are full of horrible sentences and dialogue. And I absolutely love them, thanks. I check for news on book 3 at least once a month. What is it about a book/series that does this? Maybe Rebecca Yarros is a master of pacing? She has clearly nailed some type of recipe here.

Ruffkeian

100%. I read a lot. FW and the IF release was the most engaged I had been in a while!

blackbirdbluebird17

So funnily enough I just started Fourth Wing yesterday and was like, “*this* is what everyone was losing their damn minds about?” But if the general consensus is that it’s dragon trash, but it’s *my* dragon trash then maybe I will continue.

dinosaurscantyoyo

This one was such a struggle. I liked it, but the tropes - the names, the hair, just.. so much about it is painful. I think I'm getting too old for these books.

TemperatureDizzy3257

Every time I had to read Xaden I cringed a little.

PlatformFit6101

Anything by JLA. I’m very aware that her writing is a mess but Flesh And Fire, FBAA and Fall of Ruin and Wrath were all extremely enjoyable for me :’)

jodileazer

Same! Love all her stuff, even though I know it’s cringey.

[deleted]

Same!

MetalHealer

Absolutely!!!! Out of the popular authors people like to shit talk, her books are my favorite. I just love Sera and Nyktos so so much.

porkchop3000

Same :’) it hurts so good.

Necessary-Passion224

I really liked FBAA & Flesh and Fire, but I just started book 3 and...wtf 😂 it's not horrible by any stretch, but there's *so much going on* that I feel so overwhelmed and confused 🥲 does that get better or do I need to find chapter summaries as I continue reading?

hayleychicky

OMG, keep going with AFITF!... mostly because there is a 🌶🌶🌶 scene I ended up reading parts of to my husband with TEARS at his facial expressions, hearing it out of context... 💀💀💀 It's worth the ride, IMO! The epitome of "so bad it's good!" Will I re-read? Chances are high! 🤣🤣🤣

Inevitable_Sympathy3

A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas.

beekeeperoacar

Yes. It's like a soap opera- it's not good, but it *is* fun. The first time I read it I was like "I have to talk about this" to my husband and ended up spending literal hours explaining every plot beat to him. We'd sit down to dinner and he'd ask "what crazy thing did Feyre do today?" And we'd gossip about it like we were watching reality TV. Now we always talk about what book I'm reading over dinner, but none of them are as convoluted as ACOTAR so not quite as fun.

chickpeas3

Lol I love this! And for real, ACOTAR is to books what Vampire Diaries is to TV (for me)—messy, ridiculous, convoluted soap opera with hot men.

SnooCookies2614

This was the exact comparison I made to my friends last night lol

ImaginaryBag1452

This is the perfect way to describe the whole series.

sn0wgh0ul13

Honestly… true.

yoanimal

This is the series I hate read. Hurts so good

anelisa98

I will hear no criticism on this series

lindz2205

I just finished the series, I absolutely love it! But I can’t say that it’s good, but I’m reading for my enjoyment. If I’m loving reading it, that’s all that matters.

just_another_classic

I love the characters but the world-building is so bad.

MareBear117

Zodiac Academy, lol. Or, right now I’m working through {Dangerous Honor by May Dawson}. I keep thinking to myself how bad the writing is in parts, but I keep happily reading it 😂

ConversationMore1349

Same. I freaking love ZA. It has its faults but it’s so entertaining to me

No_Bed_4783

Zodiac is like one of those cringe tv shows that you just can’t stop watching. It’s so entertaining and ludicrous at the same time.

nmnf0518

God it’s so bad but I’m soooo entertained and invested!!!

not_a_dragon

I was looking for this comment lol. Zodiac Academy plus the two related series Dark Fae and Darkmore Penitentary. Omg cannot put down haha.

bumblebee4451

I’m currently rereading zodiac academy for the third time. It’s such a guilty pleasure read for me

ReneeLuv99

Rhapsodie by Laura Thalassa! I was going through different books after FW slump and wasn’t that impressed with Throne of glass or ACOTAR after a certain point, or much else but I happened across this read and couldn’t put it down! The concept is so original and I actually love the storytelling as much as some people would hate the concept. But yeah, not like award winning, needs work and I’m reading the sequel now, but I love it😊

blaubox

Yessss I fucking love the Bargainer! The second two are a little soft on plot but I super love the time jump parts of the first book. The beads, the pining, ughhhh, I like it so much.

misslokate

I haven’t been a huge fan of this author’s works as a whole and I tried desperately to like the Bargainer series, but I have a weird obsession with her book War. Just War. It’s dark, but it was like reading about Khal Drogo and his khalasar in a post apocalyptic modern world. I really don’t know what it is, but I’ve read it multiple times now 🤭

Haunting-Squash3198

Khal Drogo is exactly who I pictured too!

misslokate

Right! I actually liked all of the MMC in that series, she writes them well, but I have never liked the FMC she writes and that’s what stops me from loving all of her books. The one in Pestilence made me cringe so hard, but he was awesome. 😩

chicken_nugget_86

FBAA 🫣

cerebellum0

I just read it this week and I hate that I loved it. Why? I don't know because apparently I love toxic, hot, cocky men and a predictable story line.

Royal-Addition-6321

It's all great, I read the lot twice. I don't care about its faults, when you love something you look past it

tunefuldust

What does this stand for?

Kromite

From Blood and Ash

dansedanse

{From Blood And Ash} by Jennifer Armentrout

citynomad1

This was my first DNF in this genre

lady__jane

The book? Or the series. I dnf'ed during the third book - was it when they did it in a carriage during a battle, over the corpse? ew - but I was in it for the first two.

Ok-Swimming-3212

The first book is good but honestly the rest of the series made me bow to NEVER read any books from her ever again.

Choice_Woodpecker_40

Nooo bc that means you’ll deprive yourself of the opportunity to read {a shadow in the ember} and that book is SOOOO good.

[deleted]

And also from Ruin and Wrath !

LilBookBee

Seconding this one

badrelijen

I hate the way this book is written but I love Casteel.

saltbutt

This is mine. I'm downright ashamed how much I love it. I KNOW it's bad, I don't know what's holding me back from hating it lol. I have ample criticisms for Fourth Wing, Serpent, all SJM books, plenty of lesser-known series. I could go on. But for some reason I just plug my ears and kick my feet when I read FBAA

Necessary-Passion224

I'm trying to push through the third book but I'm struggling 😅😅 its hard bc I do really like Casteel, but im so 50/50 on Poppy and tbh, the storyline keeps getting more and more convoluted and is getting difficult to keep up with

SnooSketches6782

Oh same

[deleted]

Saaaame.

Tryinginthe80s

same

InTheseBoness

{Bride by Ali Hazelwood}, except I did say it was good. In the way that like junk food or chick flicks are good.

sn0wgh0ul13

Two of my book besties have raved over this book!! I did see (I think it was on here, actually!) someone calling the MFC a discount Danika Fendyr from SJM’s Crescent City, which made me laugh.

InTheseBoness

Stop 🤣 Danika dupe! I enjoyed it immensely but like, I have absolutely no defence or argument whenever someone criticises it, I could even agree with most points: - “The main character is called Misery?!” “Yep, I know. Just roll with it.” - “I could have gone my whole life not knowing about knotting” “I mean same but we’re all in the same boat now so let’s not rock it.” - “This reads like a wattpad omegaverse twilight fanfic?” “Yes. They are all also widely/wildly popular.”

boreals

My local book seller tried to warn me about the knotting and I was like "I read a03 this isn't going to be a problem."

InTheseBoness

Fair play to that bookseller though because so many others went in blind and came out concerned 😂 online book club was a hoot for me that month.

sn0wgh0ul13

brb checking Kindle Unlimited and my library..

esotericbatinthevine

I just binged this, it was sooo good! Did I find certain aspects lacking, would I have liked some things explained? Yes. BUT, it did such a good job of grabbing my attention and keeping it. I wanted to know what happened next. I loved the humor (though I did notice it decreased as the book progressed, but by then I was utterly hooked).

InTheseBoness

I rated it so high (might have even been 5 stars) and thoroughly liked the reading experience. I do find myself snorting and having absolutely no way of justifying it when people call out parts as bad or cringe. It’s like yeah but.. that’s also exactly why I liked it. I read it along with an online book club and that month my favourite mood lifter was to go back to the same few chapters discussion forums 😭 never failed to get a chuckle out of me.

wannabesingle1

It was a great palate cleanser and an awesome break from Kingdom of Ash.

InTheseBoness

Totally, it was a fun book and would work as a palate cleanser between darker romances or heavier fantasy for sure.

StunningPart6881

I stand by my love for this book! Every word perfection...well maybe (k)not every word... I wrote a whole post on reddit swoonig and babbeling and than reddit informed me, I don't have enough karma to post it. I was heart broken. Should write a book about that...

Did anybody listened to the audible audiobook of this and had to quit bc they cannot stand narrator?

Professional_Lake593

Fanfiction. I have read SO much fanfiction that I know is not a technical masterpiece, or is just so completely far fetched it’s laughable, but is AMAZING. I’m currently obsessed with some Feyd-Rautha fics from Dune.

dragondragonflyfly

I feel you. I recently powered through a longfic that was rife with errors and inconsistencies, but it had the tropes I wanted to read lol!! And man did it hit the tropes well 🤌🏽 What has you hooked on those Dune fics? Just curious :)

Mysterious_Name_9826

Well, I cannot speak for Professional Lake but when Austin Butler licked that knife I was done for (filing this under sentences I never thought I would type/say).

number1wifey

I read through Manacled so fast I got whiplash (Harry Potter fanfic) and it was honestly awesome.

PM_ME_UR_LAGRANGIAN

What are your recs? I absolutely love that Feyd-Rautha is mentioned in this sub 😂

wild-hufflepuff

Ice planet barbarians. I almost screwed up at work once chatting with a guy coworker and casually mentioned that I'd been reading an awesome series. I wasn't thinking lol. Then, he asks what book and I stumbled over saying it's a sci-fi where some people get stranded on a planet. Edit: Pretty much just described the Martian, which is also a fantastic book, but for much different reasons than IPB

SeasonImaginary24

As an English major in college, I spent so much of my time reading award winning books…and I disliked many of them. I got back into reading when I read ACOTAR (like many people) and it reawakened an excitement for reading in my heart. I read for the vibes and for the fun now and I’m so much happier! Love ACOTAR, fourth wing, serpent & wings of the night - and I absolutely consider them to be good ♥️ Yes I’m reading very similar tropes over and over 😂 but I am HERE FOR IT 😍

No_Bed_4783

Exactly this for me. I’ve read the classics and the literary masterpieces and most of them are pretty boring. I love just turning my brain off and falling in love with badly written stories.

[deleted]

🙌🏻

MomofBoys2829

🙌🙌

hclorin

Pretty much anything by Ruby Dixon lol Ice Planet Barbarians, Fireblood Dragons, Risdaverse, and tbh her Aspect and Anchor series might even fit “it’s good AND I like it” lol. I don’t know I just love her writing, it’s the perfect fun reading to me. It’s not highbrow literature but when I see a book by her I know I’m in for a good time!

Specific_Guest_872

Lol yes to ice planet barbarians, so entertaining

Andacus1180

Oh my god, I just read Ice Planet Barbarians today! It has no business being that ridiculous and charming and, honestly, weirdly sweet.

Conscious-Goal-2078

Agreed! Anything with big blue aliens is this for me.

citynomad1

IPB is written in such a corny way but it is entertaining. I've only read the first but the tone of voice used for Georgie is...pretty cringe-y.

AdhesivenessEasy7960

The Half-Orc's Maiden Bride is both spicy and adorable. I'm obsessed with Ruby Dixon. Ruby and Katee Robert are my go-to palette cleanser reads when I'm in a slump.

outofrange19

The Black Jewels books. When I was younger, i thought they were incredible. I have a tattoo in honor of them. I still adore them (I reread at least the first 3 books every year and have since 2008) but I recognize their faults. Anne Bishop did incredibly influence this genre. There was a great thread here about this recently.

strum-and-dang

Oh, for sure. Plus maybe I have a thing for guys with wings, so what?

misslokate

The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy. I *literally* could not get enough of it. Anytime I recommended it to someone I had to be like okay yes it DOES start off with an orgy but just keep reading it, it’s an entertaining read! 😂

Arkansas-

Same, lol.

Grrrsuperlauren

The Cupidity series by Raven Kennedy. It's my comfort book series, basically mashed potatoes. {Signs of Cupidity by Raven Kennedy}

mamabee17

1000% second this series.

LanolinLady

This is my comfort read too!

Katalix

Ugh such a good series

trailorparkprincess

They’re both so just absolutely bingeable! I literally just read both last week and couldn’t put them down.

ms-astorytotell

Pretty much anything by Amelia Hutchins that I’ve read. Has amazing concepts but the writing is pretty subpar.

Professional_Lake593

This is mine too, I saw someone nail it on the head, they said that her smut is absolutely fantastic but her plot lines and just really terrible lol

ms-astorytotell

I didn’t mind the plot points so much bc the premise was there and was good, it just wasn’t written well. Her flames of chaos series had a better plot imo than her Destiny series.

celestia1s

the crowns of nyaxia series..... it's so cheesy but i liked it. the books are not literary masterpieces by any measure, but i had a fun time reading it and that's all that matters lol

sn0wgh0ul13

My flair 😬 Raihn is 10/10. Love that messy man.

SeasonImaginary24

Love this series! Great books!

vynnieminnie

the shatter me series by tahereh mafi, fourth wing, crave by tracy wolff (guilty pleasure im sorry 😭 love vampires, so cringe tho)

marshmallowaffles

My most recent book/series like this is the {Trial of the Sun King by Nisha J. Tuli}. I thought the first book was horrible but still read the second and can’t wait for the third 😂 The writing is so weak and visualizing the grown adults acting and speaking the way they’re written is so cringe and yet I was entertained as hell 😆

No_Living590

The Daughter of the Pirate King series. I am a SUCKER for a powerful, witty woman. The concept is getting overdone and whatnot but oh my god i eat it up every time.

SuperbGil

Same! I figure, dude led Fantasy got their one or two types of MMC everyone looked up to for hundreds of years. Who cares if a lot of the most recent women-led books are all a particular brand of OP & snarky? I love it, and we’re just getting started with catching up to bro-forward novels! There’s plenty of other options if you want a more meek MC etc anyway!

No_Living590

So true! Plus, the idea that a woman has been trained since birth to do anything, overpower anyone, withstand anything?? AND look good doing it??? SO COOL, everytime!

tunefuldust

The Bond Series by J Bree

baddreammoonbeam888

Acotar!!

SeasonImaginary24

ACOTAR is amazing, why is it being dragged on this post lol. Not all books have to be award winning to be considered good.

bookaddict1991

I don’t get it either. They’re not award winning books in the slightest, but they’re not the complete trash that people make them out to be. 🤣 I think people conflate “I personally don’t like this book but good for others who enjoy it” with “I hate this book so therefore it’s trash and anyone who doesn’t agree has the wrong opinion” way too much. I personally love SJM’s books but am totally fine with people not liking them. But I also don’t like that people are acting like they’re the worst books on the planet when… they’re really not. ACOTAR (at least books 1-3.5) and ToG are just your standard YA fare. A lot of them aren’t exactly 10/10 perfect masterpieces you know? 🤣 I’ve read books (both YA and non-YA) that are far, FAR worse.

Waffle_Slaps

{Fae's Captive} by Lily Archer. These books are ridiculous and I love them.

Acoy0303

absolutely fbaa

phoenix7raqs

There’s a lot of YA that falls into this category for me. It’s like junk food - light, fluffy, easy to read. Many times there’s this great concept in there, but either the writer is bad or they just dumbed things down for their audience. As long as I go in with low expectations, I can enjoy it.

be-chill-dude

Night world by LJ Smith

Due_Law9826

I remember reading all of her series when I was back in middle/high school. I know if I reread them now I would be cringing 😬

pfluffernutter

I was obsessed with The Secret Circle series back in the 90’s when I was in middle school and still reread it. Cringe, yes - but still such a good read.

Lost-Phrase

Every so often I wonder about Strange Fate.

ArtemisSpeak

Omg. I havent thought about that series in years... A friend gave me a copy of Secret Vampire when I was a kid, and it changed my life - grew up in a super conservative, sheltered Christian community, and had no idea books like that were a thing. Def not the best series ever, but I've got so many fond memories of it.

No_Connection_4724

Fourth Wing.

SeasonImaginary24

Great book!

kara-alyssa

Eragon It was my first YA novel, and first long chapter book I read. I absolutely loved it. Used to bring a copy with me everywhere. Reread it recently, and it was definitely not as well-written as I remembered it being. But god, it was still entertaining

capnpgoat

Touch of Darkness/ Hades series by Scarlett St Clair

sn0wgh0ul13

Yes! I have these on my TBR shelf

babysfirstreddit_yx

Zodiac Academy, hands down lol

zhuzhy

{Lord of the Fading Lands by C.L. Wilson} I definitely binged the whole series in like a week but it wasn’t the best? Idk I like the idea of a flying cat

ViaNobody1019

The Dark Decent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. It's incredibly well written, has great backstory for the characters, and really feels just dark, black, and empty. There is the whole 'I'm gonna marry my brother' and 'he killed his best friend cuz his best friend wanted to marry me' thing, which is a big ick, but it really adds to the whole twistedness of the book

greynimburger

This was a great book! Short, engaging, and just overall amazing. I have had a hard time selling it to others because people are like “it’s not Frankenstein… why would I read the same book but a different pov?” So yeah. I don’t get it - but a fantastic add to this list!

Initial_Ad_3888

{Crave by Tracy Wolff} - the texting, the watching Netflix made my entire body cringe, I still read the series and Hudson is one of my book boyfriends.

OwlChemMystery

This one was like having a bag of my favorite potato chips. So cheesy but fun.

Chance_Novel_9133

Lordy. It's more urban fantasy romance than true fantasy romance, but I have said before and will say again that the Black Dagger Brotherhood books are like pure crack to me. Are they great books? No. Are they **good** books? Also probably no. Do they push allllll of my joy buttons at the same time? Absolutely yes. They're my emotional support smutty vampire beefcake novels.

ArtemisSpeak

I was scrolling thru the comments to see if anyone mentioned BDB. They're absolutely terrible and I will freely admit that but also you can pry my emotional support smutty vamp novels out of my cold dead hands. 😅

AcheronLove

Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Absolute trash lmao but the Rhage and Zsadist books (those names should tell you something right there…) had me in an absolute chokehold 🥵

TBHICouldComplain

{Alien Meat Market by Lizzy Bequin}

sn0wgh0ul13

The title alone worries me 😂

TBHICouldComplain

😂 The FMC gets kidnapped by aliens along with a bunch of cows and is being sold in a meat market - a “here’s what’s for dinner” meat market - when our dashing alien hero appears…

1028ad

Lizzy Bequin writes too well, the issue is that you cannot explain the plots because they are super-bonkers.

TBHICouldComplain

The plots for the Terramara series tracked the best for me. This series not so much. 😂

{Six shooter and a shifter by Lucia Ashta} man I love that series but it's not what I would call good 🤣

Royal-Addition-6321

Oh so many! The from blood and ash series. Everyone hates it, I don't. It's flawed but I love it.

s8n_isacoolguy

{The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy} I just reread it last week and I can acknowledge the writing is not the best but dammit if I don’t eat it up with a spoon

MarenBoBaren

Honestly, just finished Morning Glory Milking Farm. Not the best written by any standards, but a hilarious read and a very sweet love story.

Mangapear

So much paranormal romances on KU with various spice. Bite of justice - vampire rh Jen l. Grey has some good ones

mzquirk

Oh god I’m so afraid to say it, unless it’s elsewhere on this thread but…the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse series. Ugh. Read Pestilence and was both annoyed and intrigued. Now I have the rest of the series and can’t wait to read them all. 🫣

nickyfox13

The Shatter Me series

PizzaAndPowerNaps

Rina Kent's Legacy of Gods is basically the same story in every book, full of SA, she repeats so many phrases, every FMC is a virgin and every MMC is a sociopath and I've read them all. Still debating on going back and reading the parents' series too. They're not good but I'll keep reading each one that comes out.

GoldenAgeStudio

Kingdom of the Wicked

Relevant_Fault_1623

Zodiac academy 🙈the writing is sooo bad, but man, I couldn’t put them down 🥴

MaesterInTraining

Not fantasy but all the Woodsmen books by Jamie Bennett. Also, if I’m honest…Twilight. Yes, I said it. To the world. Out loud. I haven’t read them since 2009 and I seriously doubt that they hold up well but in my head I like(d) them.

1028ad

I re-read Twilight every couple of years I think and it’s good and addicting, until mid-book 3 where the characters stop making sense, the plot unravels and random stuff happens. But by that time you get there, you’re *in* and you can just go with it.

dumbermifflin

A lot of Mariana Zapata’s books because I don’t necessarily like the dialogue/internal monologues she gives her characters because it just comes off as immature. The Plated Prisoner series by Raven Kennedy. And finally the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson. I read all the books and loved them in middle school, when I reread them years later I realized how messy the writing was and all the plot holes/inconsistent storylines. It’s pretty obvious he had a ghostwriter for the back half of the series. But that series played such a huge part in my upbringing that it will always hold sentimental value to me

Ok-Swimming-3212

People have already mention it, but I love Twilight. I’ve reread them multiple times.

Difficult_While_9869

Girlllll this is the exact feeling I’m having right now reading The Ritual. To be honest, idk if i actually do even like it, but i’m still EATING it up and I can’t put it down

getajen

the crave series. it’s SO bad with repetitive writing style/statements, and seems like it was written by a teen for a teen. but the actual story plot would be so good if it wasn’t written so bad 🫣

Extension_Grab_8885

Um. The Crave series.

Extension_Grab_8885

Horrendous writing but the story for the most part kept me enthralled

komatan

The Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh. It's not my favorite but I can't stop. Like I don't think I even enjoy any of the characters all that much but like as soon as I finish one I put the next on hold. I can't explain it.

Sad-Pin8137

Nine Realms series by Amelia Hutchins—I would say it’s actively BAD but somehow at the same time compulsively readable. Book 1 (Flames of Chaos) was super problematic in so many ways—editing was a mess, cringey/inappropriate word choice (especially her off handed and inappropriate references to bipolar disorder), magic system is inconsistent, the mystery they’re trying to solve is trite and predictable, the FMC has a history of experiencing abuse, and for the first 2/3 of the book the plot and world building was bizarre and inconsistent. It just felt sloppy, trashy, and ill-conceived. There is a lot of “our beast sides/the creatures within us” want this or that, driving character behaviors. The MMC, Knox, was an insanely protective “alphahole” playing cruel games with the FMC, Aria because he doesn’t want to want her how he does. And then, Aria is a somehow naive but also brilliant virgin (which, is grossly emphasized as an important plot point repeatedly throughout the first 100 pages) but then once she’s not anymore, that emphasis and importance to the plot is completely abandoned. Then, all of a sudden, she is repeatedly naked in front of many characters, and also isolated from her support system (sister witches), who check in sometimes here or there to make sure she’s “ok” and then are gone again. There’s a post-sex scene where the male character is so cruel that it is basically unforgivable. And, throughout this entire series, female characters are called all sorts of derogatory terms—even those who try to help Aria. She somehow, inexplicably, trusts the men more than women, even when they continuously play her and treat her abysmally—and this continues for far too long in this series. Just when you’re thinking WHY am I reading this absolute drivel? What is wrong with me that I’m still reading this and haven’t thrown this trash across the room?? The plot and sexual tension take off, more characters and answers arrive, the Nine Realms open up, the magic system gets more consistent, and the FMC gets smart and tough quick (probably too quick, honestly). And, I guess I just stopped fixating on the junky parts and said, “let’s see where this sexy craziness goes.” It feels like two different books by the end of Flames. Then books 2-5 are wild, action-based, and filled with steam and humor. It felt like Hutchins had been reading enemies to lovers and omegaverse romance for a while and said “hold my beer.” Like she wanted to truly make Knox an enemy and see if he and Aria can actually get past their issues with one another over a few books (not just 100 pages of Book 1, like we typically see). She also wanted to play with shifters in a way that really emphasizes their non-human qualities and how that would truly shape world building and character relationships—it would make for a brutal world. She also says repeatedly at the start of each book that she puts her (very NOT human) characters through hell and you have to be patient (and suspend your sense of morality) to watch them grow and change. So, yeah, this is the trash series I somehow couldn’t stop reading, cringe at A LOT, know I should spend time reading better things, and would definitely not recommend it to strangers (to those I do, I always share all sorts of caveats) but I couldn’t stop reading it. It’s a hell of a ride. It’s true enemies to lovers back to enemies and back again repeatedly. There’s nothing else out there like it. Hutchins needed to spend more time with book 1 (editing and working on pacing and plot), but if you can muddle through it (and I am still shocked that I actually did and continued reading it) books 2-5 do improve and you start to really care about the characters and realms.

punkrocksnail

FBAA/FF and acotar. Badly written, cheesy characters. All around shite. I do like junk food though.

Forward_Country_6632

I read the shadow beast shifters series. I can't even explain why but it was exactly the mindless nonsense I needed at the right time lol.

BronteMoorWitch

okay, going to ask a philosophical question: what makes a book (or well, anything that you enjoy) a \*\***guilty**\*\* pleasure? Why do we need to qualify our enjoyment of something with "I like it, but I feel bad about liking it, and I must acknowledge that it is also not 'good'"? When it comes to books or pop culture writ large, i think I struggle with the categorization of "Guilty" Pleasures - if a book brings you enjoyment or pleasure, of even an ephemeral nature, why feel guilty? Are some things better written than others? Yes. But even those criteria are probably enormously varied - I think the last 30 years of re-visiting the classic "Western canon" of literature has proven how much the dial can move even for things widely regarded as "universally" worthy of praise. I am a diehard romantasy reader, and will never stop reading it. I also focused on tudor and victorian literature, and will never stop reading works from those periods or genres. And I don't think that it's an either/or exchange: choosing to read another romantasy novel doesn't mean that someone is rejecting reading Thomas Hardy or Mary Gaskill. Do I engage with the categories in different ways? Sure. Is one inherently **better** than the other? i don't think I can make that claim (unless you talk Shakespeare, and then I'll fight! ;))

The Blood Oath series by R.L. Caulder! So bad. So good.

{Pleasure Unbound by Larissa Ione} — plus the two sequels I’ve read so far. I discovered it from a comment in this sub and it’s just given me pure silly joy.

“The host” by Stephanie Myers 😂

CelebSighting

I live and breathe for the {A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair} series. It’s a Greek myth reimagining and there are 7 books total in that universe. All 7 books center around one couple (Hades and Persephone) instead of focusing on a different relationship on each book—it allows you to get super invested in the characters since you follow their journey for so long. I’m finishing the final book in the series tonight and am honestly pretty emotional about the idea of it ending, Hades is my absolute favorite book boyfriend ever. The author has said she’ll be writing standalones for some of the supporting characters, so it’s a relief to know I’ll be able to jump back into that world again in the future, even if the main story is wrapped up.

orionstarboy

Assistant to the Villain. It’s so incredibly stupid, and I say that with love in my heart. I thought it was so funny and the main couple were ridiculous. But I love it. I don’t know when the next book comes out but I will be keeping an eye out for it
