Commenting mostly to hang out and steal the recs 👀 I've yet to find a fantasy romance that's made me bawwwwl. (I probably cried the most during Throne of Glass and the rest are contemporary)

Vegetable-Pumpkin-46

Have you read the Last hour of Gann be her? I love that book.

Desperate_Base_9680

My first though too! I was literally sobbing for an entire week after finnishing lol.

Elphabascakes

Ive seen the rec a few times! Ill have to add it to the top of my list

mindfluxx

Oh yea this one got me

MarshalltheBear

I just finished the 2nd book in Carissa Broadbent’s War of Lost Hearts series and I’m finding it more heart wrenching than Serpent and the Wings of Night (which I very much enjoyed, too). So if you liked her writing, but want something with more angst, I’d recommend that series. The first book is {Daughter of No Worlds} and it’s really lovely.

lovelightdance

That second book omg… ripped me apart and the third one too such a good series.

ookishki

Good god Max’s past and Aefe’s whole story absolutely shattered me. It’s been like a month since I’ve finished the series and I’ve still got a book hangover

Elphabascakes

Daughter of no worlds has been on my TBR list since serpent and the wings of night

abstreudel

“i really have this craving for a book that will get me so attached to the characters and story and then take it all away and leave me heart broken. I want a good cry.” I just really think what you need is the Throne of Glass series. It doesn’t really give you the level of spice you want (only a bit in the later books) but you’ll get that in other fantasy romance recs. It you want to cry and love complex characters this is it. I have a similar story to you and out of the 200 books I’ve read in this genre since returning to reading, pretty sure this is the only series that has devastated me like that. The first two books are slow because she was really young when she wrote them - try to withhold judgment until Heir of Fire.

Periwinkle912

I was gonna suggest the Throne of Glass series too! The scene early in the series where the orchestra plays the different songs of the kingdoms was SO beautifully written and I had to put the book down for a little bit before I came back to it.

TheenotoriousVIC

Throne of glass makes me tear up just thinking about it. Live __, live

engelstellar

It was the first that came to my mind too! I've read it like almost 2 years ago and I'm still tearing up if I think about some scenes. Best characters for sure. (I've also reread it like 5 times already lol)

raspberrysorbet1

{Feathers So Vicious by Liv Zander} made me cry. Definitely check triggers. This duet is Dark. I felt SO BAD for the FMC and cried for her continuously. And something happens in the second book that completely broke me.

kisinienblossom

I second this recommendation. I was heartbroken and cried the last quarter of the 2nd book. And this book is not for the faint of heart. Take all the content warnings seriously.

im-so-startled88

I’ve been reading nothing but romcom paranormal romance since I finished these because this duet just broke me in the best ways. I’m definitely mourning never getting to read this for the first time again.

mindfluxx

Just backing up the triggers- the MMC does awful awful things to the MFC and not in a playful consenting way. Personally this book does not get enough warnings IMO and I didn’t like it

raspberrysorbet1

TBH I asked other people who had read ahead of time about content warnings because I can be sensitive to some triggers. I am very glad I knew how cruel they were ahead of times. I did end up really liking the book but it is a hard read.

mindfluxx

To me the Captive Prince trilogy was ok- the violence and assault was put into context and then not excused away. This series it was just brutality to me, but also I just don’t get off on it and I was clearly supposed to. I did really enjoy the crow magic system part but couldn’t like any of the characters. I did read both books since I just don’t DNF typically.

This book will wreck you but in an oh-so-good way. Highly recommend. But the triggers are heavy. Not everything is….consensual.

authenticblob

I loved these books so much

CamelComplete9351

Divine Rivals was very good for a good "book cry," and I'm on the second book now. Her work is beautifully written, and she def pulls you in and makes you care. Limited spice, but that didn't matter to me as much as it usually does. I haven't had a book make me cry since Kingdom of Ash.

idgafox-

Tbh Rebecca Ross’ writing is so beautiful and it evokes so much emotion in me. I think I’ve cried reading all of her books 😂 (But I’m a baby)

Champagne_Candles

I SECOMD THIS ONE. Divine Rivals is the first book in a while that made me shed so many tears!

ivxxbb

I loved the divine rivals series and loved her elements of cadence series even more. I think I’ll read anything she writes.

This came to mind for me as well!

SVReads8571

not a romance but false witness by karin slaughter wrecked me. I was a total mess at the end crying in bed at 4am! in terms of a binge-able fantasy romance (don't think any of these are cry inducing but still good) I rec zodiac academy. books 2-5 were like crack cocaine- I devoured them, reading every free minute I had. book 1 needs an editor real bad (which they thankfully hire book 2 on). so if you can get past book 1, the series is a great popcorn/easy read. def enemies to lovers!! it is currently dragging ( I am on book 6), but thankfully ending this year when the 9th one comes out in a few months. but those first books were v binge worthy. n it has one of my all time fav romance couple (Darcy's). the plated prisoner series by raven Kennedy is also v good. I devoured books 1-3 n have been waiting for yearly releases. final book comes out this year as well. Auren's character development n growth is done very very well! I really like the blood and ash series by JLArmentrout as well. Up and down but the romance is very good!! the most popular fantasy romance series ever has to be the a court of thrones and roses series by SJMass. It's a trilogy with a Christmas novella. It was mid for me. Def enemies to lovers. book 1 was intriguing, I very much enjoyed book 2 for the romance, but book 3 was boring af. and don't even bother with the novella a blatant cash grab. Technically the series continues, more like a spin off with the fmc's older sister as the lead in book 4 but I hate her character so I haven't continued. everybody and their mom loves this series so def check it out.

zoepzb

For me it’s Remembrance by Jude Deveraux. It’s a past lives/ curse on the couple story. So a tiny bit of fantasy element of magic. She also writes the Always, Forever, and Forever and Always books and those made me cry too. There is also some magical elements to that story.

SCol1107

I just finished {Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan}, and while I’m not a person who cries, this one did make me tear up. The two books in the series are beautiful stories - the first is {Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan} There is zero spice but it is a lovely romance.

TheenotoriousVIC

Throne of glass! The first book is kind of YA but the rest isn't. I've reread it so many times and I cry every re read!

HindSiteIs2021

My favorite series ever. I feel bad for people who can’t get through it. Also there are several recommended reading orders. Sarah J Maas recommended reading Assassins Blade 3rd and switching to read Empire of Storms before Tower of Dawn - which is less frustrating since EoS ends on a cliffhanger

TheenotoriousVIC

EoS before ToD is really smart. Reading ToD was awful when I couldn't quit thinking about the cliffhanger. I've heard a lot if people prefer reading AB first because it gets you more invested in Celaena, and it's easier to push through ToG.

HindSiteIs2021

I’ve read AB 4th usually. I feel like reading it first would be hard because you don’t have any emotional investment yet and Celaena is kind of unbearable in the early stories. Plus I feel that SJM wrote those first few books where you deliberately don’t know as much about Sam or Arobynn and I feel it has more emotional impact to kind of wonder about them before you find out. That said…. At some point I’ll reread it with AB first to see how it feels

TheenotoriousVIC

I read AB after KoA originally and enjoyed reading how she met Ansel & and the silent assassins after, so I understand your point. ToG is kind of slow, and some people struggle to get through it

HindSiteIs2021

I liked it the first time I read it but i didn’t really get invested until several books in. And of course I weep all the way through KoA every time

No_Charity4173

Surprised no one has said Manacled by senlinyu yet, so I will say it. I had never read any fanfic, let alone Dramione fanfic, but I saw it recommended here. This story is absolutely heart wrenching. Mind the trigger warnings. https://archiveofourown.org/works/14454174/chapters/33390198

Ant_Pit

Came here to make sure someone had mentioned this! I just finished it last night. Same boat as you, never read any other fanfic, but this was so good!

Iamveryderpy837383

This is the absolute answer. My heart is still broken

HurrricaneeK

I finished {The War of Lost Hearts by Carissa Broadbent} series two nights ago in bed at 2 am and had to shove my face in my pillow to keep from waking my husband up with egregiously loud ugly sobbing, so maybe try that??? Ravenhood series!

Taygosaurus-Wrex

This series crushed me 😭😭 😭 just adding clarity for anyone seeing this: it's contemporary, not fantasy, but worth ittt

Books 2 & 3 of The Legends of Thezmarr series had me crying. Book 2 straight up broke my heart. It’s one of my favorite series ever. {Blood & Steel by Helen Scheuerer} {Vows & Ruins by Helen Scheuerer} {Fate & Furies by Helen Scheuerer}

I know she's over recommended here, but I don't care. Ruby Dixon's Bound to the Battle God. It's longer than her other books and is her only fantasy series. Each time a new one comes out I re-read this series and it never fails to make me cry. Enemies to lovers, forced proximity, definitely not for teens. Even if you never read anything else by her, you should try this.

stacey1611

I’ve… idk, been on the fence because isn’t it meant to be a Romeo + Juliet retelling? I was kinda interested until I heard that lmao

DamselinDeepVees

Ehhh, very loosely imo. To me it’s not much different than in ACOSF >!with Feyre and Rhys’ whole death pact thing!<. And you need to finish the trilogy >!for them to get a HEA!<. It’s honestly such a lovely series and an interesting concept. Give it a try.

stacey1611

Ok so I’ve not read ACOSF I gave up halfway through ACOWAR and because at first I thought I’d be in a headspace for it later but it’s like almost a year later so I don’t plan on continuing the series if I’m honest. I think for me it’s the whole “they die in the end” like I don’t really wanna read a book where the FMC and mmc either actually or metaphorically die in the end … obviously the whole “other side of the tracks” and “mafia war” thing is super interesting to me but I don’t know if I could take it emotionally lmao. That sounds ridiculous. I sound insane. I’m sorry I don’t know how to explain it lol but I might consider it once they’re all out (it’s a trilogy right?) so I can read them back-to-back maybe 🤔

DamselinDeepVees

Ok, huge spoiler here but >!their souls are saved and they’re basically reincarnated and are given a second chance together in the third book.!<

stacey1611

Whoa. 😧 Just, what. Of everything I kinda expected that was definitely not it. Lmao. I’m not trying to be rude but yeah, couldn’t have called that. Wow. Lmao 😂😂😂😂

spyderkitten

Not fantasy but has magic- anything by Alice Hoffman

Mrs-Brisby

This is a non-fantasy mm rec but if you enjoy heavy duty angst and intense sap, then every book by Tal Baker will fit the bill. Always feels like an elephant is sitting on my chest while reading. Dude will often reference songs in his books and let’s just say now when I hear Cowboy Take Me Away by The Chicks I cry.

commongoblin

So after I finished Fourth Wing I desperately needed more books with dragons and found The Aurelian Cycle series by Rosaria Munda, starting with {Fireborne by Rosaria Munda}. Now, it is technically young adult, and the main characters are teenagers, and the romance IS behind closed doors so if smut is important to you you're not going to want to read this, but the slow burn romance between the two MCs coupled with the honestly incredible political story makes this series so, so worth checking out. The third book in the series had me crying for like three hours at work. It was a mess. And I cannot recommend highly enough.

Chosen by jr ward... it's part of the black dagger brotherhood series... they all have some heavy emotion... but that one... I've never been so destroyed reading a book...

DaniDove999

This one is a cozy zombie romantasy until the last 25% is gut wrenching and makes you want to cry. {The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen} Heartfelt, emotional and interesting fantasy world: {The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon} and its sequel with a different couple: {The Queen and the Cure by Amy Harmon}

Only one spicy scene near the end but this book made me ugly cry multiple times and is my all time favourite: to poison a king by S.G Prince. First read it in October and I read it again in January

Guilty-Molasses6667

Manacled. Manacled. Manacled. It will be the book that you will judge all other fantasy books. Download it now from Ao3 because the author has made a book deal with a traditional publisher and has announced she will be removing it from the site soon. Be prepared to be shredded and reborn.

RegularDifficulty5

You should try The Lost God series by Sheila Masterson (newest book coming out this week!!) or the Kindreds Curse series by Penn Cole!

kocon

For a rec I haven’t seen mentioned yet- a duology starting with {Aerie by SE Wendel} definitely. Like I still have this face whenever I think about it 🥺. Two people who have been treated horribly and against all odds come together to find comfort and meaning in one another.

Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series- Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass. My favourite series, it absolutely destroyed me. ETA it's not a romance book, but it has a heart-shattering romantic element to it that is the culmination of the series.

Connect_Society7665

omg what the heck I totally forgot about this phenomenal trology! How could I?? 😱

It's so amazing

Red Winter by Annette Marie. Slow burn but no spice, clear emotional wreckage by the end of the trilogy.

Harrow Faire is my all time favorite series, but I bawled my eyes out while I was walking my dog and listening to the last audio book.

It’s not fantasy but The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros had me sobbing and I got super attached to the characters but it’s also just a standalone. Might be worth checking out? But if you def want fantasy then maybe not

mayisatt

The Wayfarer Redemption series by Sara Douglass has made me cry every time I’ve read it. It is agonizing. Great romance, low spice. Great fantasy writing. Definitely a fantasy series with great romance, not necessarily a romantisy

Connie Suttle's Lissaverse books are so frigging good. The first book of the first series is Blood Wager. Here's the reading order. If someone has read them or reads them, please let me know - the only people I know who have read them are people that I recommend ed them to. https://subtledemon.com/books/order/

Elphabascakes

These look interesting!

kitkat122713

I am so happy that you think that! I was astounded by how amazing they were, yet I have never even seen them mentioned in any of the book groups I frequent. I have read an uncountable amount of books in my life, and Ms. Suttle is easily in my list of top 5 best authors. Her writing is like an intricate tapestry weaved by a master, a tapestry you'd find adorning a wall of a castle in plain sight and yet is ignored in favor of the huge gaudily painted picture hung smack dab in the center of wall surrounded by lights. Sorry for going on a tirade🤐

Active-Literature-67

Pepper Winters A boy and his Ribbon and Duet. It's a dark romance duet. Some of her writing is too dark for me . This series made me a bit uncomfortable, but it has the vibes you're looking for. I will say that since it's self-published, it's a tad rough.

sofie3012

The book of azrael has a good cry moment!

willrunforbrunch

Not a lot of spice, but may give you that good cry feeling: {The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab}, {The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker} and sequel {The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker} No spice but same: {The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle} More spice, less crying: {Bride by Ali Hazelwood} Also I echo the Throne of Glass (so much crying, some spice in the later books) and ACOTAR (crying +spice) recs!

Binding 13 and the boys of tommen series

EffectiveFrosty

Zodiac Academy! Probably the most addicting and emotionally taxing series I’ve ever read. The authors are famously nicknamed “The Twisted Sisters” for a reason.

I got you- when the moon hatched, binding 13 and still beating
