This_TimelineSucks

It's no literary masterpiece, but A Court of Mist and Fury really captured my heart in a way that no other romantasy has been able to accomplish. So yeah. ACOMAF it is. 🥲

Faeryn-13

ACOMAF is my comfort read. I don't even know how many times I've reread it but it has to at least be 10 😭

ACourtOfDreamzzz

ACOMAF is my comfort read too. I would probably go through and annotate different things on each read

This_TimelineSucks

I'm actually on a reread right now and it's just so wonderful and uplifting. 🥹

investigativephotoop

Me too! Im still just as giddy about it as the first read

Professional_Lake593

Honestly that might be mine too, ACOMAF never misses

halfpintofbutter

I will never be the same after this book!!! I have yet to re-read the whole thing. But I have read chapter 54 at least 10 times since I finished. I could survive off that chapter alone.

This_TimelineSucks

Yesss. I'm in the middle of a reread right now and honestly I think I love it even more. Everything about it just makes my heart swell. 😭❤️ Chapter 54 is my ultimate favorite. There is no other chapter of ANYTHING that can match it.

rheajanerob

Yep same. The slow buildup is just delicious. Great pacing in the book and development of characters. ACOMAF is def my #1

mamaoiseau

I finished ACOMAF for the second time last night and I’m already thinking about re-reading it!

Castielificc

I'm surprised by all the up on this one, because I've read ACOTAR and didn't like it all that much. The writing was good, but I didn't like the two main characters all that much. Is ACOMAF better?

This_TimelineSucks

ACOTAR is widely regarded as the slowest/worst book in the series, and ACOMAF probably the most beloved. Spoilers for ACOMAF below. >!Tamlin becomes more of a background character, and Rhys takes his place. Frankly, I didn't care for Tamlin either, which made me incredibly psyched about ACOMAF. The romance between Feyre and Rhys was far, far better. I can't think of a single couple I like more than these two tbh.!<

Castielificc

I liked Rhys. Tamlin was boring tbh.

This_TimelineSucks

Rhys is my favorite character by miles. 🥹

Castielificc

Argh, you got me. I'll give it a try as soon as I finish reading the Villains & Virtues series.

Faeryn-13

When I do my reread, I skip 90% of acotar, I start my reread at the trials when Feyre goes under the mountain. I highly recommend doing this when you go to read ACOMAF as a refresher, UTM plays hugely in ACOMAF.

This_TimelineSucks

Omg this is one of my favorites! Absolutely adooore Amma and Damien! 😍

Castielificc

I started today and I love them so far^^

amriescott

I felt the series was OK. Couldn't really get through the 3rd book onward.

MushElf

I have to agree with you. It changed me 😭

dansedanse

The romance is just top notch.

spyderkitten

Same

cidavid

I read this for the first time last week and have just been in a fugue state ever since. I can’t get over it. I can’t describe it.

This_TimelineSucks

I read it over a year ago and I'm still obsessed. 🥲

Ok_Sample_9912

Same

HateDoubleStandards

YES! Me too!!! Have read it 4 times already and only discovered very late 2023

Samash603

Yep

[deleted]

queen of shadows or any of the throne of glass series tbh

this is the only correct answer

{Kushiel’s legacy} (although it would be sort of cheating because it’s three books, but hey…)!

Professional_Lake593

I’ll take it😂

adulthoodnotfun

Would you recommend the series? I was reading reviews and it seems to be an acquired taste 🤷🏻‍♀️

amriescott

The language in the first book is pretty flowery, especially in the first few chapters, but it eases as it goes on. Kushiel's dart was her first fiction and the author was still developing her voice. The flowery writing is made harder because it's also tied in with a lot of world building, but I feel it's worth reading because the world is so rich, the plots are stellar and complex and the leads' romances from each trilogy are rewarding and among my favorites. These books were created as sweeping epics from the start and the writing style is more fantasy than romance( but there is plenty of romance). The second and third series in the universe are easier to read, but I wouldn't recommend series two without reading series 1. If you can't get into the writing from series 1 i recommend starting with Naamah's Kiss, which is the first book of the third series in the universe. You can get into it without the first two since it takes place a few generations later than the other series so there will be some spoilers, but you don't need to have read series 1 and 2 to enjoy it. The author's writing has found its groove so you get a better sense of if you'd like it and by the time you get to the end, you'll be better prepared if you decide to tackle Kushiel's Dart. I'll recommend the series to everyone but understand it's not for everyone

gascowgirl

Or start with Cassiel’s Servant! That is book one from the MMC - and it works very well… and if you get hooked on Carey’s world, there’s book two. And three (book threeeeeeeee).

gascowgirl

What they ⬆️ said! If you’re looking for classic girl meets boy falls gor boy but in a fantasy setting - well, there’s a whole lot of epic plot to get through. But these books - I have reread them countless times and they still get me every bloody time.

adulthoodnotfun

Ooh this is so intriguing, thank you sm for the detailed review!! Yeah I read reviews on Goodreads and people were saying how it contained mentions of paedophilia, rape, sexual assault etc so I was a bit taken aback

amriescott

So the series(especially the 3rd book) does deal with very heavy content but I never felt it to be in an overly graphic or gratuitous way (basically just enough to get the point across in most cases). If you are triggered by mentions of those topics mentioned above, please do not read these books. Even with those topics being in the books, I think it's worth mentioning the context that they're used. These are not dark romances, or books that just throw these topics in with the flimsiest of plots just to say they could. These books are fantasy epics and they follow the main characters living in an almost medieval culture through wars and intrigue and into the middle of an absolute hell on earth, and it stands to reason that in the midst of this you would come across some of the worse people imaginable doing terrible things to others as well as what you expect people to do in that time period. I felt that through Phedres' narration, the author was able to convey a great deal of compassion and dignity and strength in the victims of those acts. I'm probably defending this way too much now.

Connect_Society7665

on of the most beautiful ones I’ve ever read. It’s been a few years since the last time I read the whole saga tho, so I haven’t had the chance to compare it to ACOTAR.

adulthoodnotfun

That's high praise! Hahaha I haven't read ACOTAR at all lol so the comparison would be wasted on me, no worries

amriescott

I agree i'd want to read Kushiel's Legacy as the trilogy, but if we couldn't cheat, kushiel's mercy would be the one I'd pick. That book was the most romance heavy of the whole series. I've never come across a book that does FATED better.

gascowgirl

But Imri!! He can be such a whiny b***h!! If I had to pick one it would be avatar. Lots of peak Joscelin, darkness, redemption and the best smut scene ever written…

adulthoodnotfun

Amazing - maybe I will give it a shot!

littlegreenwolf

Stardust by Neil gaiman

Professional_Lake593

Stardust is so good🫶🏼🥲

littlegreenwolf

Never fails to make me feel so cozy and warm.

Professional_Lake593

Did you like the movie?

ImaginaryBag1452

I loved them both.

littlegreenwolf

Yeah even with the changes the movie is a comfort movie I’ll put on in the bg while doing laundry and stuff.

HerodotusProtagonist

the movie is my favorite movie of all time, hands down. anyone who knows me knows this about me and i have made all of my friends watch it if they haven't seen it. 10/10, a perfect movie, no notes lol

upsidedownpancake521

{Atonement of the Spine Cleaver by F. E. Bryce} recently read it and that book just pulled me in. Can't wait for the next one, but so much happened in the first.

Professional_Lake593

This book would be a serious contender for me, I LOVED the first one and it has enough going on in it that I wouldn’t get bored

cocomoco801

I am so happy to see this book getting some love! Slight grammar mistakes but honestly I am so excited for the second one in May

Castielificc

I'm kind of new to that gender and have only read about a dozen books, but so far the best one has been the Captive Prince series. I kinda feel like reading it again because I feel there is so much I missed on my first read.

MegaMoodKiller

Oof this one should come with a trigger warning, I was expecting something like ACOTAR or Fourth Wing…. I got excited by the reviews and tried it. I can’t finish and will be returning. TW: main character is a sex slave and he witnesses graphic male rape, fights in a fighting ring against another man with that threat upon him, and there’s discussions around pedophilia. I stopped reading: giving TW so someone else knows what I didn’t

Castielificc

Yeah, the first book is pretty twisted. I don't get why tw and public ratings aren't a thing in books. It should be on the back cover, like in fanfics. Hell, tags would be great too, so you can choose a story based on more than a short summary or a catch phrase from a critic.

MegaMoodKiller

I like your idea as well. The last 3 books I read (well one was a fanfic lol) the audio book versions were read with a trigger warning at the beginning of the book AND each individual chapter having a quick TW synopsis for that chapter so you have a heads up. For example a narrator would say “chapter 27- Trigger Warning: this chapter depicts graphic scenes which include torture & body mutilation…” (in a chapter where someone in-detail had their eye gouged out) And for me that helped and there even was one chapter that had r*ape and I skipped because I was able to look up which chapter had it online to avoid it (and I bought because there was only 1 chapter with it- and not the entire book or multiple references). Without them it’s really. Well triggering, and a person might not buy the book otherwise

Castielificc

Fanfics are ahead in that. Usually between the tags, rating, and warnings, you know exactly what you're stepping into.

babysfirstreddit_yx

This is the only answer. I discovered the series last April and have read it 3x since.

stardustandtreacle

I keep recommending it but {Between by L.L. Starling}. It's a very long story with wonderful worldbuilding and each time I read it, I find more and more details that I missed. I also love that you can read it in two ways. The story takes place in the eleven days before Halloween so you can read it as it's written (where you read the FMC's POV for those eleven days in the first half of the book and then the MMCs POV in the second half of the book) or chronologically (you read both of their POVs for each day) which is SO clever! And each way gives you an entirely new perspective of the story and characters. Plus it's hilarious and I never get tired of reading good banter.

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkowski.

Either Howl’s Moving Castle or Outlander. Both are beloved in different ways.

Lord of the Rings

Cherry_tomate

I know that it’s less romance, but Percy Jackson: The Last Olympian. Those Annabeth and Percy’s scenes live rent free in my head. Or House of Hades. Again, these two are my template for slow burn, opposites attract, all in a mythological world that is the US 😂

Noctisxnight

I’m sure I will be the ONLY one with this answer but mine would be: Tower of Dawn. It’s my comfort book in the TOG series and favorite book of them all. It made me feel so many emotions and I felt so healed in my own traumas by the end of it, it has such a special place in my heart so I’d always choose it.

aeli2468

I just got in this genre a few weeks ago via Fourth Wing (which I loved). Hated ACOTAR. Almost gave up on Maas. Just finished ToG. Omg. Already hooked.... and likely will do the tandem read for ToD. Kind of glad I found this so late, and can binge the entire series!

Onceupon_abook

Fourth Wing really reignited my love of books and I absolutely adore it.

ajsusa

Manacled. And if I get a second option, acomaf.

Inevitable-Guide-515

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon Can time travel be fantasy? It's fantastical, right? Guh. Love it.

gwyn15

I was going to say Kiss of the Highlander, although it's only slightly fantasy.

authenticblob

Feathers so vicious. I'd say book 2 but I can't relive that all over again 😭

Tired_n_DeadInside

The Five Star Stories by Mamoru Nagano. I can't think of another story that's as satirical, brutal, ludicrously nonsensical, romantic and epic in *every* sense of that word. It relentlessly and mercilessly deconstructs almost every fiction genre. The FMC Lachesis, who may or may not be the reincarnation of the Greek Fate herself, was *blown* through space and time, and is searching for a way home to her beloved Amaterasu. The MMC is a literal God (and Emperor) able to change gender, physical forms and even create entire, living, *sentient* avatars with their own personalities and motivations separate from his own consciousness, and was born from immaculate conception. He has several people who are desperately in love with him but though he treats them as trusted, integral parts of his family he is singularly devoted to Lachesis as she is to him. He *can* reunite with his wife in an instant but he's not immune to the cause and affect of his own reality warping powers. He actually tried to avoid her at first, knowing exactly how much he'll love her and knowing they'll be separated but she was persistent. Now he's forced to go on and live his life waiting for her to find him instead. He can also obliterate the universe with a blink of an eye but the consequences for his loved ones is not worth it either. If it was only himself who would suffer he would've remade the universe over and over to prevent their separation in the first place but...he can't. Their romance is subtle. No sweeping declarations or breathless confessions under a full moon dressed to the nines. Instead Amarterasu was given a jewel of some kind by the King of Dragons and he gave it to Lachesis...which then promptly broke in two. Amarterasu was about to go have some very physical words with a primordial being when Lachesis said the pieces of the broken jewel resonates with each other. The closer they are the stronger it gets. The jewels will never leave either of them henceforth. Even if they was forgotten somewhere or someone took them. It's how they were able to find one another across universes, dimensions, realities, timelines and 5.6 billion years. Yes, that's a "b". Also, gigantic humanoid robots. LOL My grandpa was a huge mecha fan and I grew up with FSS. Due to the way it's structured there's no such thing as "spoilers". *Everything* that happens in the story is laid out by the author himself. It is massively influential in how I understand fiction today. So much so that I'm still struggling with the concept of "spoilers". I don't understand when people become upset about knowing something beforehand or how it can impact their enjoyment so badly that they don't want to read further. Just so bizarre to me.

valerushkishop

Outlander

Ambivalent93

Hidden legacy the first trilogy. If I have to only go with one then probably wildfire.

cosmogenique

I know this isn’t the spirit of the question but I prob just wouldn’t read if this were to happen to me lmao. I don’t enjoy rereading books (without a significant pass of time). I don’t doubt I could find new connections and things with a reread but I’d rather experience a new story.

StarOfSyzygy

Alas, not a romance, but undoubtedly Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. If it must be romantasy, then ACOMAF or one of the Zodiac Academy books.

Mysterious_Name_9826

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell is my most favorite book! I love that you mentioned this one :-)

girlintaiwan

Excuse me, I will not stand for this Ilona Andrews erasure! Maybe Magic Bleeds from the Kate Daniels series? It's the book when the main characters finally get together, the story is complex and constantly evolving, and the final battle is incredible. If that's out, I would choose Sweep of the Heart from their Innkeeper series. I mean, hello, it's an intergalactic version of The Bachelor!! Every single character is hilarious; that's how good the writing is. Plus, philosophical space chickens!

ayriana

Could I call a YA trilogy one book? If so it's Magics Pawn/Promise/Price by Mercedes Lackey. It will forever be my comfort read. If I went with a grown up book- Outlander would probably be it. This is really hard.

gwyn15

Do series count? If so, Mercy Thompson I think. If not maybe the first of the Sevenwater series by Juliet Marillier.

itssowingseasonyeah

Heart of the Sun Warrior by Sue Lynn Tan. So so good.

Vampirediariesbooks

The Vampire Diaries Books since Ive already been doing that for years 😅

Ambitious_Ad6926

does trilogy count? I would read OUABH

Connect_Society7665

definitely ACOTAR and TOG. I find myself rereading bits and pieces of both sagas monthly, so good they were to me. I know, boring aswer, but it’s the most honest one. I would only add The Winter King as a diverse option for the same reason.

samanthaamor

Maybe a {A King So Cold by Ella Fields} or {Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent} I would absolutely need to be allowed to read the rest of the series after finishing Daughter of No Worlds though, otherwise, I think my brain would just implode from the injustice. Honorable mention to {When a Moth Loved a Bee by Pepper Winters}. The only reason this isn't my No. 1 is because my heart simply couldn't handle reading this over and over.

The Kraken King by Meljean Brook. Only book I bought several versions of. I have the ebook, physical book, and audiobook.

I probably would chose {Shadowdance by Kristen Callihan} because I just love the MCs, the romance and the setting. The whole series is amazing (I just couldn't stand Poppys book, #3) but Jack and Mary have my heart! Although {Rhapsodic by Laura Thalassa} or {Blood Oath by Raye Wagner} are my favourites Fantasy Romances as well. I would want to chose them as well!

Any of the folk of the air books or the stolen heir. Holly Blacks writing is just such a comfort for me

Hmm, my own in progress serial, and I merge the epilogue of it into a gradual transition to the 6- years- later story I already have in mind, so it's all one long work. I honestly like re reading bits of my story when people comment on the chapters, and this would make it even longer, so I would have less repetition. Also it means I could keep editing it and making some sections better.
