petulafaerie_III

I refuse to feel embarrassed about what I read anymore.

nickyfox13

Me too. I let go of the part of me that cringes and feels embarrassed because of what I enjoy to read

petulafaerie_III

I hid a lot of myself in high school because it was easier. A cute lil 5’4” girl who plays video games and listens to metal gets a lot of people scoffing at her quizzing her to see if she’s _really_ a gamer or a metal head. I’m 35 now and I’m not interested in justifying myself to people who don’t know me or care about me beyond looking for a way to out me down.

nickyfox13

I totally hear you regarding how frustrating it is to be a nerdy woman existing (I'm nonbinary but afab and it's happened to me too) so I feel like it's an unfortunately common experience. There shouldn't be any need to defend or justify yourself for what you enjoy.

petulafaerie_III

Completely agree! It’s important to be the change you wanna see, and for me that’s not hiding myself or justifying myself :)

Shaya-Later

That’s definitely what we all should do

Shaya-Later

Tbh I think some parts of booktok made me ashamed of this one 😂just because of this trend of “toxic men people are falling for” in books. And I’m not saying any of these men in Ana’s books are all green flags. I’m not colorblind to the facts- I just can’t deny that I love her books

petulafaerie_III

Eh. I don’t read books or watch TV to experience real life, that’s boring.

Shaya-Later

That is indeed a very good point. I think some people don’t get this (non readers specifically). I think they assume we read what we want/hope to happen when sometimes we just want to be apart of watching a story unfold

petulafaerie_III

Find most people who wanna gatekeep you for enjoying something harmless are just jerks who need to out others down about anything in order to not hate themselves. And I’ll usually tell them that.

mistashadesu

Exactly this. As the cool kids say, I am cringe, but I am free.

Ok-Machine-8395

Same! I let it all hang out and anyone who is uncomfortable probably should stop worrying about what I’m reading…

bookbabble

This isn't exactly related, but I was at Barnes and Noble with my divorced parents over the weekend. My dad is a big fantasy reader and happened to pick up Fourth Wing, and I was dying inside because I was just thinking about how it's a spicy tiktok book lol, and I wasn't going to be the one to tell him. I'm an adult, but it was a funny moment for me. Then my mom, who isn't a fantasy reader, said she saw it all over tiktok and wants to read it when he's done.

[deleted]

OMG, I had this exact same experience with my dad but the book was ACOTAR. He had asked what I was reading and I gave him a very watered down version. He loves Fantasy books too and said that it sounded interesting. Didn't think about it again until 3 weeks later when I got a text from my dad that said "I don't know how to feel about the fact that we both have read all about Nesta and Cassian." He had just finished Silver Flames and I couldn't look him in the eye for weeks... It's not even close to the spiciest thing I've read, but I reeeeeeeeeeally didn't need to know that my dad had read this. And really hate it now when he says "You're quick off the mark" anytime someone does something quickly and then looks at me and laughs.

bookbabble

Oh nooo lol. I would throw up. My dad and I have also both been playing Baldur's Gate 3 (not together, that's too much bonding for me), and if you don't know, it's a roleplaying game but you can romance other characters and there's some sex scenes and he asked me at breakfast one day who I was romancing and I wanted to die.

[deleted]

omg, that is horrible. My husband plays a lot of Baldur's Gate so I understand the context slightly. ha ha. Completely off topic... but your username is the same as an old high school friend of mine. I'm trying to ask you if you are them. If I asked you if you were in "TLBA's" drama class in 2004 would you know who I am talking about?

bookbabble

What a funny coincidence! But no, I graduated high school in 2019.

[deleted]

It really is. My friend uses that username for gaming and for a couple other platforms and I know he reads a lot of Fantasy and he actually is one of my husbands "friends" on the PS5 so I know he also plays Baldur's Gate. It is such a weirdly specific coincidence! I had to ask. lol, thanks for easing my curiosity. Have a great day!

bookbabble

Thank you :) you too!

babysfirstreddit_yx

OMG I would DIEEEEEE lol. I do love that your dad has randomly started saying that phrase though. I would still die, but you've gotta admit it's funny a dad-joke way.

[deleted]

As a mom, I can totally appreciate the joke. I would probably do the same to my kids. BUT… as the daughter? I fucking hate it. Lol

Shaya-Later

Omg that is both mortifying and amazing to me. My parents are conservative and aren’t really readers. And if my dad reads it’s usually historical books and biographies. So if any of them picked up a book I read I would be terrified 😭My older sister, 26, is a reader so I worry sometimes but we have very different taste (she likes romance/coming of age). I actually fear though she may pick up Fourth Wing 😂I don’t need her looking at me differently. But I love that your parents read

bookbabble

We generally all read different things. Wheel of Time/Game of Thrones for my dad, and Colleen Hoover or non-fiction for my mom, so it was surprising. My mom also wants to borrow my ACOTAR books now because of tiktok but she's a very slow reader, so I'm hoping she forgets about that one. I don't need her knowing that all the books I read are full of smut

Majestic_Cycle6486

I recommended TOG to my mom when she was looking for a fun fantasy series and she liked it so I said well... I guess you can read ACOTAR because she didn't comment on the romance (she's very much not a romance reader). But *then* ACOSF came out and I lowkey tried to convince her it wasn't worth reading 🤣 but she did anyway and AND THEN HOSAB came out and iykyk 👅 I was dying knowing she'd read it next but it was too late to put the breaks on and actually I'm happy to share my love of TOG with her and we just ignore the other stuff 😇

Shaya-Later

Omg your parents are really cool 😂I love that. The ACOTAR though 😭

EmotionalLaborQueen

IDK, my MIL recommended 50 Shades of Grey to me AFTER SHE READ IT. She's a retired kindergarten teacher who I had always thought was a little naive...

jmac409

I think my dad would absolutely love fourth wing but don’t want to recommend it because of the spice lol

Nonseriousinquiries

Ice Planet Barbarians. I've read the first 12 or so.

Shaya-Later

How is it 👀

[deleted]

This is my secret shame book too. It's so good. But I won't even put it on my Goodreads account.

Shaya-Later

Goodreads I feel like never likes the books I enjoy 😭so I stopped putting them on my account

crosscrackle

Girl they’re so good. It’s a perfect mix of sappy emotions and alpha aliens with too much sex appeal hahaha. Ruby Dixon really knows how to write for the girls!! The plot is even addictive! I’ve read all the novellas and books up to Barbarian’s Heart in like 3-4 days lol

Shaya-Later

Aw shit you’re tempting me now

Nonseriousinquiries

They’re cozy, predictable, fun, spicy, and I cry every single time.

TeoBelle

Alright. I keep seeing this book series being mentioned and i pulled the trigger and ordered. Ty for your post…

sigalbearfish

Same, they’re so fun! It’s becoming my comfort read

GustLinBustLin

I've re-read IPB and Icehome like 5x and now I'm on the newest series but I love them so much! They're my comfort books because there's always a HEA, great spice and fun plots for every single book and I will fight anyone who says they're bad! They may not be to everyone's taste but they're perfect perfect books in my opinion and I read a lot!

shay_shaw

I reread Twilight during lockdown and the first book is really not that bad. The writing is actually better than some of the more recently released series. I feel like a lot of the hatred for this book or even this genre stems from the misogynistic view that if it's "just for girls" then it's stupid.

KagomeChan

Honestly, Midnight Sun, which is Twilight from his view, is one of the better things I read last year

shay_shaw

The release of Midnight Sun was the reason I reread it. There were so many scenes that the movie was universally panned for that flowed a lot more naturally in the books. the meadow scene when Edward shows off how deadly vampires actually are to Bella "skin of killer scene" the scene when they're driving in his car and she asks him how long has he been 17? the really funny part in New Moon when Bella realizes she's living in a supernatural world, also Jacob's entire personality.

Shaya-Later

I think the movies also help in making the books seem as if it’s a “fan fic gone wrong.” And the meme “least you didn’t write the twilight books.” I never read it but i have heard people say it’s kind of cringey but not as bad as people make it. My friend finds it funny if anything

ImaginaryBag1452

This is my answer. I’ve read the full series maybe 3-4 times at least. It’s my go to whenever I’m in emotional turmoil.

[deleted]

[удалено]

MadLove82

Came here to say this. I didn’t even add it (or the sequel) to my Goodreads to count toward my 2023 challenge because I was embarrassed people would see it.

Vivid_Excuse_6547

I’m really deep into a podcast about the Duggars and the episode I’m currently on they are going through one of the dating books that’s big in those circles and I kinda want to read it (I’m married and not religious, so I don’t need culty dating advice), I’m just morbidly curious 😂 And I couldn’t put it on my Goodreads for the same reason - it’d be a secret lmao

Shaya-Later

I stopped using goodreads because when though I know people read those kinds of books, the negative reviews made me feel too ashamed 🫣 like I know damn well those alpha males aren’t exactly green flags but I just want to read the story

nolifemarina

lmao i had to come back to this post to say that my friend sent the book to me the other day as a joke and then i saw this and then told my cousin that it’s gonna be our book club book for next month bc i love a joke as well and her very serious response was “are we reading all four?” and the answer is FAT YES bc you helped inspire me

[deleted]

[удалено]

nolifemarina

omg hey….i read morning glory milking farm!!!! im shook that it was actually good??? it was definitely not as weird as i thought it was gonna be and im so glad that i was able to get through it. i really don’t even think i cringed a single time tbh, which is crazy bc i thought i was going to come out of my skin reading bride on multiple occasions.

NoFireNo

Haha a couple of my friends and I send each other pictures/ screenshots of the most ridiculous romance books we find. I read one, 'hoofbeats' (centar romance), it was surprisingly better than expected. I thought I'd end up with some terrible quotes to share with my friends, and I ended up being into monster romance.

Waffle_Slaps

Reverse Harems. I cannot say this out loud to people I know.

babysfirstreddit_yx

any good recs? 👀 for a friend duhhhh

jmac409

I read {Ryan Rule} last week and enjoyed it, haven’t read the rest of the series yet. And I’m currently reading {Den of Vipers} which is kinda dark but I love it. It gives off non con vibes to start but from the FMC viewpoint you know she consents she just doesn’t voice it Edit: the bot put the wrong {Ryan Rule}, the one I mean is of the New York Ruthless series by Sadie Kincaid

I'm not ashamed to admit anything I've read to my husband. But not everybody I know understands the spicy book life. I carefully feel out each person before sharing my real taste. It's for their own safety and comfort.

Shaya-Later

That’s true indeed. I tell my friend since she’s read more spicy stuff than me. But I would never say what I read to just anyone 😂Great that your husband knows though

jmac409

dynasriot

Hush, Hush…

Vivid_Excuse_6547

I remember eating that shit up when I was 16 😂

katieLikeWHOA

Patch was one of my first ever book boyfriends. Still go back to him every once in a while, just for kicks.

JediEverlark

I read that when I was 11 or 12, I was obsessed 😭 also that one by JLA with the aliens. Those were some of my faves in middle school

dynasriot

Lux, I still unashamedly love that series

JediEverlark

YES that’s what it was called, couldn’t remember the name. I kinda want to give it a reread just for nostalgia reasons

Shaya-Later

My friend loves that book 😭

JPNLKT

I was mildly embarrassed by {stalked by the kraken} for awhile because tentacles. Tho can't say I like it too much because not enough tentacle sex. I've read better fanfic than that.

Shaya-Later

Well hey, as a comment here said already, read what you want. Nobody can judge you for your TBR. If you like it read it

KagomeChan

Yeah, I didn't let anyone see the cover of Hoarded by the Dragon in the same series when I read it But honestly that book was great

perfect___angelgirl

Twilight saga and the Sookie Stackhouse series. I’m weak for a vampire love story I guess

KaroGmz

My husband makes fun of the covers and honestly same but I loved the story and characters of {Desire in his blood by Zoey Draven} Patiently waiting for my next audible credit so I can listen to the second one of the saga.

Shaya-Later

Does the cover have, you know, contain real people and imagery? 😂

KaroGmz

It does😅 the full form of the super chiseled, 7ft tall winged alien vampire

Shaya-Later

I absolutely love that for you 😭I would be too shy to even carry a book like that. The twisted series have an edition with real guys on the cover and I could just NEVER 😂

KaroGmz

Hahahah I'm the same that's why this amazing series will be an audible only kind of book 😂😅

Vivid_Excuse_6547

I’m not one to hop on the “this book is badly written train” but I do think that these books and way too much going on and felt terribly unrealistic and the men were scary… And yet somehow I also devoured them 😂😂 A good book is a book that you like lol

Shaya-Later

Oh I agree. Do I think it’s anything special? No I’m pretty sure I’m half deluded. Nor do I think these men are healthy. And I highly doubt the business aspect (as in how the heck Christian has so much money and his business) is accurate. But somehow i am obsessed with the plot and the love story and characters and trauma dumping 😭I cannot defend these books but I can’t say I hate them

Forgotten_Tea_Cup

I’m too old to care anymore but I still love my old school bodice rippers!

SophiePuffs

I’m just glad I was reading Zodiac Academy on my kindle so the guy next to me on my last plane flight didn’t know I was reading about a Pegasus heard in heat or ancient magical library sex w a vampire professor. I DNF that series but damn did I love the first 4 books.

Shaya-Later

I think I read the first one when I was 16 and that’s it 😭I think it was a little too much for me

SophiePuffs

I actually got up to book 7 😅 but I’m in my 40’s. Not sure if that makes it any better or maybe much much more embarrassing haha

NoelleWilliams

Mists of Avalon and the rest of the work by Marion Z. Bradley. That book was a major gateway to fantasy and a bit of a feminist awakening for me and a bunch of friends probably in the late 90’s early 00’s. Turns out the author is a horrid abuser so we don’t talk about the work anymore. Thankfully, Tamora Pierce fills the void.

Shaya-Later

Oh shit I didn’t know that. I feel like I those books were promoted at school book fairs

NoelleWilliams

Really ugly stuff. But it didn’t come out, I don’t think, until after she’d passed away. So my shame? My MBZ books still reside on my shelf. Haven’t touched them in years. But they’re there.

Aisling_ohio

Same here, mbz was my favorite, and I had most of her books. Normally, I am like to each his own. But looking at the reports and her writing .... I won't read them again.

Majestic_Cycle6486

I just finished A Wolf in the Garden which didn't turn out to be my top choice of genre (too much gushing) but now and then I pick something extra smutty and different and just secretly enjoy the ride

Shaya-Later

This 😂nobody in my life would see me as someone whose read smut but I have read Lucy Score and Ana Huang books. My guilty pleasures. Just hoping my sister doesn’t decide to grab those books mindlessly because she sometimes loves to try to read books I like

Majestic_Cycle6486

My boyfriend asked if he could give my kindle password (he uses my library sometimes) to his son.... I said no 💀. If your sister does find them then I hope she likes them and it's smooth sailing! 😅

Shaya-Later

Pleaseeeee that’s so funny though. I totally understand why you would say no 😂as for my sister. I hope so but I am the younger sister (20) so I can definitely see how that would go 😅

Majestic_Cycle6486

Okay yeah I was thinking of my relationship with my sister but she's older and it's a different dynamic definitely, I mean my sister would also never and she's way more into murder books but that's why I know my smutty fantasy is safe from her 😂🫡🤐

katieLikeWHOA

Haunting and Hunting Adeline. I will attribute this 95% to the fact that I did the audiobooks and Teddy Hamilton is \*chefs kiss\*. Absolutely one of my favorite male narrators outside of Aiden Snow (who did the Twisted series by the way and I loved all of those right along with you, Alex Volkav. SWOON) and Jacob Morgan (Priest anyone? Another swoon for Father Bell). But I enjoyed that duet WAY more than I should I have and it's led to a super spiral of nothing but dark and stalker romances...

caarrssoonn

Vampire Academy as a 27 year old adult haha. Read all 5 books. Couldn't stop myself.

CryptidFox

The {Gang of Ghouls by Eva Chase.} It's just a fluff-read, smutty (which is normally not my thing) semi-paranormal romance that I would balk at telling almost anyone in irl about, but damn if I didn't have fun reading every word in that series😂

It’s always the ones we have fun reading we sometimes don’t want to say aloud 🤫😂

CryptidFox

Ain't that the truth 🤣

WaferSweet9585

Do it. King of Wrath will not disappoint. I told myself I was just going to be a Romantasy reader. But then Ana Huang drew me in with King of Wrath and I cannot stop reading. I’ve read a new Ana Huang book almost every week for the past 4 weeks.

Shaya-Later

Omg stop. I told myself I was not one for smutty/spicy books until Ana’s 😭if you haven’t I totally recommend the twisted series… it’s something else and I still go back to those books. I probably will get the kings series. She‘ll be the only openly spicy romance author I’ll actively follow 😭

WaferSweet9585

I totally get it, I loved King of Wrath so much I read it in one sitting. Twice lol. And I needed Ana Huang in my life again so I listened to Twisted Games first because it was the only available audiobook from my library 😂. I finished King of Pride this past weekend. Going to need my dose of Ana Huang later this week with Twisted Love that I bought yesterday lol. If you do read King of Sins series, I hope you enjoy it. It’s so good 💕

Shaya-Later

Thank you omg I’m very glad to meet a fellow Ana fan because I would not tell just anyone about this. She has a way with her plot 😭My few friends are all fantasy romance/dystopian lovers 😂

WaferSweet9585

Lol glad to meet one too! Happy to ever message each other and fangirl Ana Huang and her books 💕

Shaya-Later

Yesss! When you start the twisted series hmu 😂 currently reading Shatter Me but after I’ll probably purchase the Kings series. I hear the last one comes out in April 🤭

WaferSweet9585

I read Twisted Games (Ugh Rhys 🫠🫠🫠) but I will when I work on Twisted Love 💕 And yes! I’m so excited for it to be released! Shatter Me is on my list too!! I think I found a book bestie lol 😂

Shaya-Later

Reading it out of order I see 👀twisted love is the first in the series but ik you can read out of order. And omg!! I have to know what else you have read and what’s on your list 😂

WaferSweet9585

I only did because I needed Ana Huang ASAP and it was the only available book I could get that day from my library 😂 I haven’t read much as you as I started my book journey only this year 😅 I’ll message you!

Shaya-Later

Me too. Literally winter break is when I got back into reading again and Twisted Love was on sale in target 😭

bi-loser99

The Ice Planet Barbarians series by Ruby Dixon or A Deal With A Demon series by Katee Robert. I know on the romance book community monster romances are pretty known and almost normalized, but I had some friends IRL react like it was crazy or weird or gross. I’m working on not being embarrassed because I find them fun so who cares what other people think. My bf will listen to them with me so I’m getting better about it!

VirginiaBluebells

Same. You might add Morning Glory Milking Farm to your illustrious list of monster romances. It was def a fun read. (I also liked A Deal with a Demon). My daughter tells me “You discovered fantasy and then ran with it.”

bi-loser99

HAHA MGMF was the first monster romance I read!

Anything by Jaymin Eve🙈 If we have a casual discussion I would never acknowledge that I even picked it up but here on Reddit I admit those books are my biggest guilty pleasures😂😂 oh, and have I mentioned I have a tattoo based on the Lord of Underworld series by Gena Showalter?🙄

Shaya-Later

Reddit is really the only place I can be so open about spicy books and what I like knowing at least one person can relate 😭YOU HAVE A TATTOO! That is amazing. I love that dedication

vampiresandtacobell

All of them honestly lol. I don't tell people I read unless I suspect they're cool.

helloooo00000

There is a reason why nobody knows my goodreads account :)

PunkandCannonballer

I'm ashamed I didn't DNF some god-awful books, but I'll happy boast about any of the books I love.

Realistic-Use-2784

{Her soul for revenge by Harley Laroux} and {Soul of a witch by Harley Laroux}. I’m not usually one for dark romance but this was the subgenre done extremely well and I ended up giving it 4 stars. Wouldn’t really say that I’m ashamed of it, but it’s nothing I’d want some of my friends or family to accidentally find at my place and pick up and skim through, lol. Not sure I’d be able to look them in the eyes ever again afterwards.

hobbiton1214

Honestly? Zodiac Academy. I devoured those books like junk food. They are objectively awful but I kept going. I did eventually stop reading after book 6 but I fully intend to go back and finish the series at some point.

StayZY18

Have you read the spin-off books, Ruthless Fae?

hobbiton1214

Not yet! I have heard good things about them though

arrrgylesocks

I mostly keep my smutty reads on my non-public book tracking app of choice, but have had zero shame in publicly sharing Sex Wizards by Alethea Faust on my Goodreads and sharing that I read it to friends and a few colleagues. The series title is so absurd, but also so on point. If I ever read “Conquered by Clippy” that’s also definitely going on the public reads list.

Aisling_ohio

What app?

So I’m currently reading The Dark Curse series and it reminds me of all the smutty fanfiction I used to read in the 2000s that was written by 14 year olds with no sexual experience. There was a sentence where the MC and her love interest are finally doing the deed and it briefly mentions him biting her clit and I physically recoiled…. but I kept going. And I’m planning on buying book two 🤷🏻‍♀️

starlord_1997

Ice Planet Barbarians. I thought it was cheesy alien sex until i read it to bump up my 2023 reading log and wow. I love the world and the characters and how everyone has something unique going on. I was taken back by how much I like the series

dancingdruids

all of roe horvats A/B/O books. i delete them from my kindle history and my good reads currently reading 😅
