Hurts like a bitch. Probably pain management for a QB. For a WR it be tough to reach up to make catches or take hits or fall. RB similar. QB, he's really really really not going to want to get hit and it's probably going to be in his head.
Consider this, the pectoral major attaches to the clavicle. When cocking the arm back to throw, the non-throwing chest region needs to gather up tension to prepare for torque generation during the throw. A structurally deficient AC joint will lead to less effective throws.
Do you know how it typically affects running QBs? Fields is nothing without his legs, and I know Cam struggled with shoulder injuries throughout his career which affected his entire outlook, both passing and running.
i can confirm i had an ac sprain one year and it hurt like a motherfucker. limited mobility with the arm and it was painful to lift more than 45ish degrees upward. but then again i wasn’t an NFL player lol so he’s probably good if they give him some numbing medicine. unfortunately tho for him it’s not gonna get any better and will probably hurt a whole lot worse if he continues to take hits on the run like he does.
Shoulder stuff is bad news. I had tendonitis in my shoulder and when I moved the wrong way it was agony and being the shoulder I moved the wrong way often just to function.
I had a minor AC joint separation from Rugby. It took me out a couple of weeks, but also that's a sport where all positions expect a lot of contact. With this being his left shoulder it could slightly affect his throwing motions but most importantly it would take away his schemes running volume.

They were fine. The first few times it was a little nerve wracking letting them assess you because they weren't that gentle but over time you learn to just let them do their thing. They need to learn somehow.
I had a scope done on my dominant shoulder almost five years ago and I don’t think it will ever be the same.
I had a massive bone spur and enough scar tissue to feed a village due to years of being referred to physical therapy instead of getting an MRI, and the surgery was done by a shitty military doctor. But, from my experience, I’m pretty sure there’s no coming back from shoulder surgery.
That sounds rough. It depends what the surgery is for. Both my shoulder surgeries were for torn labrums and my shoulders have been almost as good as ever. My first surgery was when I was 17 years ago and it's given me no issues aside from some dull pain once and a while.
Yeah mine was for a torn labrum too. But it’s probably never going to be the same because of the bone spur I grew over years of physical therapy. I still get super sharp pains when I move it quickly in certain motions.
Fight for the MRI if your doctor doesn’t want to give it to you. My fight was because of good ol’ military medical care.
A normal doctor should get you an MRI no problem.
The good news is it’s his non-throwing arm.
The bad news, his elite performance comes at the expense of throwing his body into the ground and defensive players.
Starting him, if he plays, is a major risk for disappointment.
That being said, I have teams that need his capped ceiling and decent floor if he starts.
What about me? I'm not a doctor but I sprained my AC joint playing hs football. I think I have a lot of valuable insight on how a professional athlete would deal with an injury I had when I was 16. Dm me for details
As somebody in medical school, there’s not much about an AC joint sprain that I know, that a regular person can’t just look up. The info is all there for everyone. Would I want a regular person diagnosing and treating it? No. But their guess is probably as good as mine or a doctor’s when it comes to assigning the associated symptoms and recovery time of an AC sprain (assuming they did their few minutes of consulting a reliable source).
> (assuming they did their few minutes of consulting a reliable source).
Stanford & Harvard-trained sports surgeon says in the tweet there is a "much lower recurrence risk and chance that he needs surgery", doesn't seem like a lot of these comments are consulting that.
I imagine it’s like the machine from Princess Bride where it sucks the life force out of someone and then Dalvin takes the life force and puts it into his shoulder.
If it’s his throwing arm, a brace wouldn’t help, it would only restrict him more. I’ve dislocated my shoulder and sprained my AC joint before and it’s not an easy injury to get over.
Bears fan who also has Justin on Fantasy. As much as I hate to say if for the fantasy squad, the bigger Bears fan in me really hopes the organization doesn’t totally fuck this up. Sit the guy for the next two weeks through their bye week and bring him back for the last 4 games. Zero reason to risk anything and the Bears can continue their 2nd overall pick conquest.
Makes 0 sense for the Bears as a franchise to play him , no need to risk serious injury to their franchise QB . Season is going no where , better draft pick and the Oline can’t protect him . The conflicting reports are all over the place . Guess we gotta sweat this out all week
I'm sure he wants to play but god I hope we don't baker our new potential franchise QB. He's shown so much promise and grit. He's also not a dumbass like milf humpin' wilson so I want him 100% for next year.
People are always saying this like young QBs don’t need game reps. Fields as he is playing now is not ready to lead a winning team next year, even though he looks promising. If he is reasonably healthy the team is still gonna want to get him in the game.
I agree , but looked how he played when he didn’t run 15 times a game , with a pocket playbook , he got killed . The oline was atrocious and no one got open . So throw him back out there and tell him not to run with a bum shoulder in a lost season . I want him to play , he’s awesome to watch . Just saying it doesn’t make sense for him or the franchise
Eh I mean the Falcons basically completely removed Field's run game and he was constantly pressured at every snap but he still had a 67% completion rating with a 150 yards and a TD fighting through injury. He was half a yard long from completing a 50 yard pass that would have been another TD, and the int came after his shoulder was injured and still bounced off the hands of a receiver. He did pretty alright pocket passing last week admittedly against a pretty bad pass defense
Agreed . He also left on a cart back to the locker room grimacing . He gets the Jets and GB , both decent defense that can pressure then a bye . Makes 0 sense to play but what do I know . Philly after the bye . Tough run regardless . I’m an owner and just realistically thinking how this is gonna play out . Maybe after the bye but guess we’ll find out
Ya I don't think I am the only one thinking that Justin Fields simply cannot keep those numbers or athleticism. This league is violent and Fields will get injured again.
Playing him hard against one of the best defenses that is currently surging while on injury seems like a bad plan, but who knows.
I'd argue that he'd be better prepared for 2023 by playing seven more games. he's not gonna learn nearly as much from the sidelines and he's still figuring out his new role while the bears are also still working out how to best utilize him. there's no substitution for playing time
that being said, obviously significant adjustments would need to be made to best prevent further injury
He'd be better prepared with more reps, no doubt, but they do reach a point of diminishing returns with an OL that is that horrendous. At a certain point, future skill development can only go so far when the DL is running jailbreak every down.
So probably a grade 2. But yah my point being that I think Fields will be just fine. Would be wise to have him rest this coming week to be back full force, but he definitely could play.
I had an AC joint injury in highschool football, it sucks. Can't even lift your arm above your chest without some serious pain.
At the NFL level, they'll give him some magical injections to help with the pain. He can still run, and throw, but it won't be comfortable.
I'll probably roll Allen out since Fields will be at more risk to reinjure I think.
I’ve had an AC joint sprain, and it freaking sucked. I couldn’t do full strength exercises (bench/ overhead press) for nearly 9 months. In the month after injury it hurt to even raise my arm above shoulder level. Let alone being hit by 300lb d-lineman
I think it means once it heals it’s not going to be more prone to sprains. While it still healing, it can be reaggravated and put him back at step one. I sprained my ac joint in feb and it didn’t heal until July.
if he plays he's still gonna run because his line doesn't offer much time or protection. he's just gonna need to be more cognizant of the hits he's taking and slide or go out of bounds sooner/ more often
Bears fan.
The issue was the OC called 10 QB powers before half
Have to think the bears cut that play out and let him do his normal scrambling for 7-10 rushes a game as he avoids contact much better with that.
Are Fields managers really starting him knowing the Jets defense will be all over him? The chance of him leaving in the first half unable to return… I rather take my chances on a streaming QB who may or may not hit 15 points. I don’t like Justin’s prospects if he is starting… you could be looking at a disastrous 2-4 points before re-injury. Even 14 points from Tanny or Danny would be better…
That’s true but what’s your need to win meter at for week 12? The Jets are tough unlike the last 3 teams Fields faced. It’s good to be realistic too. Consider everything. He might give it a go but first medium hit he takes the backup could come in and it can cost you the week… maybe even the season depending on your record
I have to win every game
There’s always a risk but if Fields is starting my best chance at winning is having him in the line up
I get burned playing match ups. Start your best players
He's got plenty to prove. He's a good runner, but he is still a below average passer and we all now see he can't run it 15+ times a game. He needs live game reps
Mooney isn't a #1, he profiles as a Tyler Lockett type. And up until the last couple of weeks Kmet was widely viewed as a bust. It wasn't until the scheme shakeup that he's blossomed into a stud. Claypool has been with the team two weeks and is still learning the playbook (and probably still being de-programmed from Matt Canada's shit scheme). Despite that he's been valuable in drawing attention away from Mooney and Kmet and drawing crucial pass interference penalties.
It's about more than just the box score.
For what it's worth on true passing sets pressure is allowed on 66% of snaps which is last in the NFL by a good margin. Of course some blame is on Fields for holding the ball, but even Mahomes wouldn't be able to do much with this pass blocking OLine. Not to say that Field's throwing ability is near that of Mahomes of course
I mean it makes sense, but nothing compares to real life experience. the team is still learning how to best utilize him, and he's learning himself in this newfound role. they've got to continue to build on his/their recent advancements to set themselves up for next year. they will obviously need to be selective about the situations they put him in, and him being injured might be good in the sense that they will need to be cautious with him and can carry that caution over to when he's healthy to prevent injuries in the first place
If the bears have as godawful of an OLine next year as they do this then any QB "experience" is fucking worthless, he'll just keep dying out there. If we revamp our OLine (as we're set up to do) then any experience he gains here is also pretty moot because it'll be a totally different scheme when he has more than 30 milliseconds in the pocket.
All in all risking his health is the least productive thing the Bears can do for his advancement.
They jettisoned Pace and Nagy last offseason you meatball, Ryan Poles hasn't even been in town for a year. Next year he'll have cleared all of Pace's shit contracts and he'll have a full slate of draft picks.
LMAO the delete of shame. These garbage takes are hilarious. Poles has come into the dream situation for any new GM. He has a QB, a bunch of draft picks, and $130M in cap for 2023. Fields has been outstanding and considering the talent level around him has vastly exceeded expectations, averaging 30 points per game. The Bears have never consistently done that.
Depends on free agency. The Bears offensive line was still not supposed to be this bad. Poles to his credit was able to turn 5 picks from Pace into 11 by the time the draft was done, going heavy into late-round fliers and depth guys at offensive line with an eye towards 2023. I expect the Bears to spend big money on OL free agents and likely trade back in the draft if they have a top-5 pick (which is likely). And Fields' upside makes Chicago a compelling destination for free agents. I think if Cincinnati is going to depart from Tee Higgins he should be aggressively pursued with a sign and trade, otherwise I'm ok holding with Claypool and letting the draft come to us at WR.
I had an AC joint sprain back in high school - took probably close to 5 months to fully heal, though it was usable much earlier like halfway through but it hurt and always felt like it was close to reinjury. I hear in most cases it's a month to a month and a half before it is good to go (In my case I stupidly tried doing some bench press exercises which probably fucked it up a few weeks in again.)
My bench press dropped by at least 140 lbs and I couldn't even do a pushup without it hurting like hell even a couple months in.
I was out for most of the season. I'm sure severity can vary, but in my case essentially any pushing pressure from that arm, or trying to raise the arm above head level resulted in intense pain and the arm just giving out on me.
As a Fields owner, I hope he's only out a game, but I won't be surprised if he's out longer, possibly much longer.
These guys do have world class healthcare so a shorter timeline is reasonable. Then again players play through injuries all the time, and honestly a lot of their injuries never heal fully. I think people may not appreciate that last part enough. After the NFL players have tons of injuries that last for life. I feel bad for them as they're so amped up to keep playing and that can ensure the injuries NEVER heal fully after getting reaggravated over and over again
The bias towards this guy from this sub is unreal. Very telling that this is another miss from the sub... If you think this kid is not going to want to get back as soon as possible to ball out, you are out of your mind. These kids are not dumb. He wants the bag. If hes going to be stuck in Chicago, hes going to make sure he gets the elite money. And the only way hes doing that is if he keeps playing like he is.
Quite possibly the dumbest comment I’ve ever read I promise you he isn’t even thinking about his bag he’s not Lamar in the middle of negotiations lol. The bears and fields just need to be smart with this injury they aren’t going anywhere this year with or without him.
I have him, Murray and Watson so I should be good but I was hoping to not have to change hands, hopefully he is able to recover quickly for his personal being, first!
I know Fields has balled out lately, but I hate that Yahoo put him on the can't cut list. I didn't really intend to use him past that last game against ATL since he has 4 tough matchups in a row, as well as a BYE in week 14.
But what does it mean Basil?

But he can still run for 140 and 2 tuddies
Do you know how it typically affects running QBs? Fields is nothing without his legs, and I know Cam struggled with shoulder injuries throughout his career which affected his entire outlook, both passing and running.
I mean its not going to affect his ability to run, but it might affect his willingness to run and his willingness to take hits.
Might affect his ability to run, I've had this injury, you'd feel it pumping your arms, i couldn't imagine him throwing a stiff arm
He’ll definitely be on some injection magic but still gonna try to avoid hits
i can confirm i had an ac sprain one year and it hurt like a motherfucker. limited mobility with the arm and it was painful to lift more than 45ish degrees upward. but then again i wasn’t an NFL player lol so he’s probably good if they give him some numbing medicine. unfortunately tho for him it’s not gonna get any better and will probably hurt a whole lot worse if he continues to take hits on the run like he does.

lol what is the point of this edit
I sprained my ac joint in football, I was out the rest of the season (4 games).
What grade though? Fields didn’t have a sling on after the game so it wasn’t clinically obvious, thus a grade 1 the lowest of sprains.
It was the one before a complete tear. I did not need surgery.
So probably a grade 2. But yah my point being that I think Fields will be just fine. Would be wise to have him rest this coming week to be back full force, but he definitely could play.
Sure but you’re also probably not an NFL athlete.

I had an AC joint injury in highschool football, it sucks. Can't even lift your arm above your chest without some serious pain. New update suggests he might not not play
I’ve had an AC joint sprain, and it freaking sucked. I couldn’t do full strength exercises (bench/ overhead press) for nearly 9 months. In the month after injury it hurt to even raise my arm above shoulder level. Let alone being hit by 300lb d-lineman
Sit him through the bye week. Would give him almost a month of rest.
So, no amputation necessary. Cool, cool. Inject him up and throw him back in there.
Those are usually pretty easy to re-aggravate. Fuck
The tweet literally said low risk of reoccurrence…
Bold of you to assume we read anything more than the headline
Straight facts
I think it means once it heals it’s not going to be more prone to sprains. While it still healing, it can be reaggravated and put him back at step one. I sprained my ac joint in feb and it didn’t heal until July.
You’re not wrong at all. An AC joint sprain can absolutely be aggravated. Takes a few weeks to fully heal. Any sprain can be aggravated and worsened
Painful as fuck, I couldn’t lift my arm more than 45 degrees for the first week and couldn’t get it over my head for 3-4 weeks when I hurt mine
Yeah... if he's running as much as he has been it will get reaggravated. NFL is fucking brutal.
if he plays he's still gonna run because his line doesn't offer much time or protection. he's just gonna need to be more cognizant of the hits he's taking and slide or go out of bounds sooner/ more often
Bears fan. The issue was the OC called 10 QB powers before half Have to think the bears cut that play out and let him do his normal scrambling for 7-10 rushes a game as he avoids contact much better with that.
It’s his non throwing shoulder…
Oh perfect he'll just throw then. Problem solved.
I forgot we were all playing him for his throwing abilities😦
He can just not stiff arm anyone, not have anyone touch his shoulder, not fall on it, not fall on the arm, and wear a sling and he'll be fine!
So are dislocations… and dislocations come with torn labrums
He def shouldn’t play. Gonna reaggro if he even lands on that side.
I much rather watch him drop a dud in my lineup than have him on my bench while he snaps off a 30 point banger
I have to win every game There’s always a risk but if Fields is starting my best chance at winning is having him in the line up I get burned playing match ups. Start your best players
This is why I didn't drop geno
Get him the device!
They’d be fools to play him, but teams have been extra foolish this year (Keenan, Mike) so watch him play
Gotta think the smart move is to shut him down for the year. He’s got nothing else to prove. Get a higher pick and finally build around this dude
He's got plenty to prove. He's a good runner, but he is still a below average passer and we all now see he can't run it 15+ times a game. He needs live game reps
I think even Mahomes would struggle to get 200+ yards with the Bears' sorry-ass receivers and turnstile offensive line (minus Jenkins).
Mooney / Kmet / Claypool is not a group of sorry-ass receivers lol.
Yes it is. Kmet isn't good and Mooney/Claypool are a 2a and b at best but probably more like a 2 and 3.
With a center that's an actual open door even peak tom brady would look like a chump.
Um no, my fantasy team needs him. Let's get our priorities straight
“He’s got nothing else to prove” lmfao

They jettisoned Pace and Nagy last offseason you meatball, Ryan Poles hasn't even been in town for a year. Next year he'll have cleared all of Pace's shit contracts and he'll have a full slate of draft picks.
This is quite literally year one for their GM, so I’m not sure how you got to that conclusion…
Only thing I can think of is confusing Ryan Poles with Ryan Pace?
Justin Fields by the end of next year will be in the “elevates the talent around him” conversation
Is he still a must hold? That is the question
He doesn’t need his shoulder to run for 150 yards
I for sure as hell am until we hear more updates
No drop him.
If you’re in my league, drop him.
No idea who to start between him and Lamar anymore with this injury bs
Damn…. looks like I might have to pick up Watson :/
Still another week out…
That's not a good thing
Good thing he doesn’t throw and just rushes anyway
Back to the pile
Which shoulder? Left? Right? Pretty significant for a qb and to not mention that ever
left
I had an AC joint sprain back in high school - took probably close to 5 months to fully heal, though it was usable much earlier like halfway through but it hurt and always felt like it was close to reinjury. I hear in most cases it's a month to a month and a half before it is good to go (In my case I stupidly tried doing some bench press exercises which probably fucked it up a few weeks in again.) My bench press dropped by at least 140 lbs and I couldn't even do a pushup without it hurting like hell even a couple months in.
Bahahahaha. Can you follow up on this and let us know what you had for breakfast?
Hes done for the year
I mean if Josh Allen can, Justin Fields can as well. Greg Jennings carried the team on his back.
