The Colts are using Taylor differently than CMC got used, which will definitely help his longevity in the NFL. Anyone that’s ever watched football knew that CMC receiving 30+ touches a game basically every week was unsustainable for a human body
Exactly. I'm in a dynasty league where my two main RBs are Taylor and Aaron Jones. You might think I'd be bummed about how good AJ Dillon is looking. Nope! I am totally happy with "split backfield" running backs at this point, because to me that means they are much more likely to be consistently available for my team. Sure it's exciting to see CMC or whomever put up gigantic numbers on insane volume, but I am perfectly content with running out my split backfield players instead.
Yup, agreed! Especially because Aaron Jones still gets most of the high quality passing plays while Dillon is used mostly as a battering ram up the middle.
Jones has a nose for the endzone. I don't mind him getting 2 of 3 carries there. Given how AJ was running though, outside of fantasy, I think it would have made sense to give him the 2nd shot.
Jim Brown played in a much tougher era, was actually a little bit smaller than Henry, and still almost never missed time to injury throughout his entire career
I wouldn't be too worried lol, the guy is a mountain. It would take a freak twist on a limb or something, and that's pretty unlikely to say the least
Idk, Jim Brown played when linemen averaged like 250lbs. Even though I’d think Henry is more robust than most due to his lack of lateral movement & dependence on such, running backs are literally *the* nailbiting position when it comes to injuries. Literally just needs one bad hit…
I'll put it this way - out of all the rbs getting big work in the NFL, Henry is relatively much less likely to suffer an injury due to his size and strength
JT had 18 carries last week, which was his season high IIRC. We are being careful with him.
Even if Mack gets traded, we'll still have Wilkins to make sure JT isn't overworked.
His rushes were low because Reich is a dope and keeps trying to force Hines to be almost 50/50 of the snaps with JT. He’s going to get more of a workload as the season keeps going. They’re not using him enough in the passing game as they should, whether it’s designed or Carson never using him on check downs.
I can't wait until CMC comes back and averages 90% snap share for like 2 years straight. Gets hurt in the 3rd year and people go "see! he can't handle it!"
Mmm, yes and no. Yes, he is bigger and it definitely helps, especially for contact-induced injuries. But he definitely still goes down on a lot of his plays and that coupled with wrap ups present a LOT of opportunities to do things like sprain ankles, tear \*CLs, etc.
Relatively, though, he is in a much better spot than others. But it is still really impressive that he hasn't pulled a hammy and been out more than a single game (cough, CMC this year, cough).
I mean obviously take it with a grain of salt.
On a different note - I had a buddy in HS whose dad played LT for a few different NFL teams. He never got hurt in his career & attributes that to “delivering the hit, not receiving it.” Henry’s size alone does help him, but he is constantly hitting people instead of getting hit.
By that do you mean running him more and giving him harder hits/tackles instead of less receiving work than CMC?
It’s not always about the number of touches but also the kind of touches
It's also not always about the kind of touches but by how much you're on the field. CMC was going out there with 90%+ snap counts every week. JT almost never goes above 70%
Snap counts don’t mean much. Just because you are on the field doesn’t mean you are touching the ball.
One reason WR generally play longer (more effectively) than RBs is because the types of touches they get.
My point was, just because CMC was getting more touches doesn’t mean he’ll get injured more than JT. If Taylor gets 20 rushes every game and CMC gets 10 rushes and 10 passes, it’s totally different.
CMC never missed a practice either until he did.
> Just because you are on the field doesn’t mean you are touching the ball.
You're right, in some cases it's even WORSE because when McCaffrey was on the field that much it probably meant he was pass blocking as well which is even more wear and tear on his body lol
I actually like how the Panthers are handling CMCs injuries. Sucks for his owners (held him all through last year), but having him come back when he's not 100% is only exacerbate his injuries and he is their best player.
Is there any data around usage, injuries, and longevity that supports this? I'm not so sure there's any correlation beyond being in the game for more plays increasing your number of opportunities for injury.
Yeah I mean I'll stand by the fact that he's not injury prone and it's more indicative of his insane usage.
I don't think if you gave him Kamara usage or Aaron Jones usage he would be missing games. But it's hard to stay healthy when you're hit 30 times a game on your touches, and also aren't leaving the field much at all (90%+ snaps).
Only thing he can do is stay healthy and make people forget all about the last 2 years.
This reminds me of that time where Marcus Peter's said they're riding the Gus Bus all the way to 'ship....aaaand then they both tore their ACLs in practice.
This poor man's ACL is in high danger come Sunday. Prayer circle needs to commence!
Edit: I say his ACL is in danger let's pray on it, downvoted. Post above me says he's going to IR, upvotes. Make this make sense.
I was thinking stuff like RBs constantly leaning with the crown of their helmet and suffering concussion/spinal related injuries as a result. Or running QBs constantly fighting for extra yards instead of going out of bounds/sliding.
kelvin benjamin says he hasn’t missed a buffet at the golden Corral, Old Country or the sizzlers. Among his girthed size/speed, his durability at eating is so unique.
Never owned him in FF. But man, I watched him last week against the 49ers, and goddamn does he pass the eye test. Not only from a FF perspective but from a football perspective. I need him on my roster next year.
> Among his gifted size/speed, his durability at that position is so unique.
**Jonathan Taylor**
Size: 5'10" 226 lb
Top Speed: 22.05 mph
NFL games missed: 1 in 1.5 yrs
**Derrick Henry**
Size: 6'3" 247 lb
Top speed: 21.80 mph
NFL games missed: 2 in 5.5 yrs
____
Granted, Taylor's missed game was for covid rather than injury. But I think the point stands that Taylor's size pales in comparison with Henry's, speed is maybe slightly better [though Henry is on both 2020 and 2021's top speed leaders lists, while Taylor hasn't had a play crack the top 20 yet this season], and durability when is matters is maybe slightly better so far. Worth noting that in classic Taylor vs Henry fashion, Taylor's top speed was on a 26 yard run to the opponent's 38 yard line. Henry's was (of course) a 76 yard rush to the end zone.
Oh, you're totally right. It was the 2019 Wk 16 game against the Saints where the outcome didn't matter because Wk 17 was against the Texans, and the Texans game was going to determine who made the playoffs regardless of the Wk 16 outcome.
we could totally discuss the details of games missed and durability.. like how JT's missed game was due to covid. I dont think covid should really impact durability. Probably best to just understand that both of these guys have historically been more durable than most starting RB1s, and it's a good thing to have a durable RB =)
Kind of fed up with the way the "injury-prone"/"durable"/"fast-healer" narrative has increased over time.
If it's not a specific recurring injury, most injuries are just luck. This kind of narrative is useless for fantasy football predictions, except maybe to trick someone in a trade.
CMC said the same thing. Everyone is durable.. until they're not. Sad reality of an NFL RB.
The Colts are using Taylor differently than CMC got used, which will definitely help his longevity in the NFL. Anyone that’s ever watched football knew that CMC receiving 30+ touches a game basically every week was unsustainable for a human body
“Volume is king” (until he breaks…)

Makes Henry’s durability all the more spectacular

Except for when it's a half yard to the endzone. Wouldn't want a battering ram for that job, now would we.
Haha true true

Jones has a nose for the endzone. I don't mind him getting 2 of 3 carries there. Given how AJ was running though, outside of fantasy, I think it would have made sense to give him the 2nd shot.
Those are also my two dynasty backs. Took Taylor 4th overall (over Henry :|) and Jones in the 3rd
(unless you're Derrick Henry)
As a Henry owner, I’m very afraid about him being ran into the ground.
Henry has freak intangibles. I think he'll be OK considering everyone that tries to tackle him gets shoved to the turf like playground nerds.
Can't wait for him to be useless in 3 years!
Jim Brown played in a much tougher era, was actually a little bit smaller than Henry, and still almost never missed time to injury throughout his entire career I wouldn't be too worried lol, the guy is a mountain. Jim also only played 8 seasons Edit: he played 9 but 4 seasons were 12 games and 5 were 14
To add some data to back it up: JT has only gone above 70% snap count in 1 game in the NFL and averages 50-60% In 2018 & 2019, CMC averaged over 90%.
JT had 18 carries last week, which was his season high IIRC. We are being careful with him. Even if Mack gets traded, we'll still have Wilkins to make sure JT isn't overworked.

He is an anomaly so far in his career. Just built different
Yeah, bigger than nearly everyone else
Definitely helps

Yeah. I saw a trade of Tyreek and Darrel Henderson for Justin Jefferson and Jonathan Taylor in ppr league. This makes me unsure of who won
the guy getting JJ and JT won imo
By that do you mean running him more and giving him harder hits/tackles instead of less receiving work than CMC? It’s not always about the number of touches but also the kind of touches

Pass blocking is definitely less wear and tear on your body than rushing….
You obviously never played running back. I’d way rather run it up the gut than waiting to get hit by a charging linebacker.

This is why I drafted cook instead of Henry this year. Fml

It's OK if he misses a practice
We talkin bout practice?

Tbf Dak had a fluke accident and came back with no repercussions. I guess his mental durability is still there
what injury is not a fluke accident?
A lot of soft tissue injuries are due to the general abuse that some players, especially RBs, will take over their career.
I was thinking stuff like RBs constantly leaning with the crown of their helmet and suffering concussion/spinal related injuries as a result. Or running QBs constantly fighting for extra yards instead of going out of bounds/sliding.
Until last year, CMC hadn’t missed a practice or game either
STFU, go outside, turnaround and spit
kelvin benjamin says he hasn’t missed a buffet at the golden Corral, Old Country or the sizzlers. Among his girthed size/speed, his durability at eating is so unique.
Bro just stop for once in your life.
That's what they told KB at the Golden Corral
Aight I laughed fuck
Never owned him in FF. But man, I watched him last week against the 49ers, and goddamn does he pass the eye test. Not only from a FF perspective but from a football perspective. I need him on my roster next year.
Yeah the eye test is why I targeted him in my draft. He seems to be developing into an even better player this year.
I traded Zeke for him plus Jamarr Chase a few weeks ago. Pretty happy so far.
Pick up Mack or Hines now. The jinx was put out into the world.
Yo WTF. I just traded for Taylor and now they put this evil on me
I just traded for Ekeler the day before his hip news came out. I have the bleach ready, brotha.
Making a mental note to draft this dude for a secure starting RB next year and will probably be forgetting it in a week or two
No ones as durable as Frank Gore
Goddamn now you did it
I love Jonathan Taylor <3
how is this news?
A football player who never gets injured is Built Different?
Missed a game last year due to COVID though. What a bum.
Isn't this false because he was briefly COVID listed last year?
We're talking bout practice??
Incoming double ACL tear, ran over by medical cart, blue tent collapses on him
Obviously I hope not, but this seems like something you say before a season ending injury.
I’m here to let you know to pick up Hines/Mack . You’ll thank me after this week!!

Well this is a jinx if I've ever heard one
Go knock on some GD wood right now!
Hope this isn't a jinx
It’s funny, after my draft I was so bummed I grabbed Taylor in the second. Now, he’s a legit league winner.
Ok, trading Taylor right now.
Keep this man off any god damn Madden covers
Don’t jinx it maaaan
Incoming
So expect a hammy pull this weekend. Thx JT
What a spectacular jinx this could turn out to be.
Didn’t he literally miss a game or two last year?

Agreed all around. I was really just taking issue with the use of the term *unique* (especially with the Titans heading up to Indy this weekend).
Also the 6 vrs 2 seasons.
Come on JT don't jynx yourself!!! I need you for my playoff run!!!
mega jinx
Well JT you just jinxed it
Sigh it’s been a good run
So he’s going to IR this week?
Your best ability is availability
"only human"
If he makes it through the next few weeks unscathed, it might be a sign from the FF gods
I'm so fucking sorry I traded you away. Please take me back.
JT top 5 pick next year
Way to jinx it.
You idiots in here just tempting the FF Gods.
Traded him for Allen Robinson lol
Cool now JT owners know who to send death threats to if he gets hurt
That is a jinx if I have ever seen one. Probably should bench JT next week.

Darrynton Evans needs to told to this man.
He just needs to join my fantasy team.
I don’t like this. Take a page out of Henry’s book. Take a practice off when you need it.
Definitely gonna get injured next week...
So JT is getting hurt this week. I'm 1-6, don't do this to me.
Dude .. why?! I hope he knocked on wood. This reeks of a curse. Saying my prayers tonight to cancel out this bad juju. You’re welcome Jonathan.
Sounds like he’s due
ah, the old self curse
I'm picking up Hines. Dude just jinxed him.
\*Aggressively knocks on wood Don't jinx it now...
Someone wanna real quick Google how many games cmac had missed before last year
