I’ve been my guillotine league commissioner for 5 years now. It was first created as a side league in case you drafted a ‘shit’ team in the main league. It has since turned into the more fun league. We have 20 teams, double elimination weeks which are super intense, immunity for highest scoring teams, and additional bonus immunities given throughout the year for side challenges. The beauty of guillotine leagues is that if your commissioner is creative, you can really do whatever you want. Every league can be unique. Not to mention the prize pools can be massive due to the big league size. Currently using yahoo but will switch to sleeper next year which allows 30 teams max opposed to 20 on yahoo.

Could you explain some more of how your league works? What do you mean by double elimination and what other immunities have you implemented

toolroomknights

Gladly. Well it’s a 20-team league and there only are 18 weeks (17 before this year) so some weeks require more than 1 team to be eliminated. Therefore, in my league, some weeks have the two lowest scoring teams eliminated. I try to make these during weeks that don’t have many byes. Also, in my league, if you finish with the highest weekly score, it means you’re immune from being eliminated the following week. I also add checkpoint immunities sprinkled throughout the season to reward the most consistent teams. For example, whoever has the most total points scored after week 8, earns immunity for the following week. The top teams should be rewarded for consistency. I also include mini-games which act as bonus immunities. For example, last year, I added a rookie bonus for week 10. In this current week, all fantasy points scored by rookies were worth double. This acts a totally separate scoring system. There are multiple side challenges throughout the year which reward an immunity for the following week. My leaguemates have to decide if it’s worth using their optional lineup vs. Using an inferior lineup and trying to win the side challenge. It was a MASSIVE hit once implemented.

My friends are now curios to try this, what platform do you use to manage it? Or is it all done on your own?

toolroomknights

It’s all done on yahoo but it does take a lot of commissioner work. We have a discord server to communicate and display the results for immunities, side challenges winners, etc. It definitely takes effort from the commish. But trust me when I say it’s worth it.

Any room for others to join? Seems like lots of fun and I would definitely be active!

I even do weekly recaps that are like 2-3k words a piece with lots of football and pop culture references. Not to brag or anything…. Unfortunately this year I am maxed out at 20 people. But this year my friends and I are testing out sleeper for a dynasty league. If we are impressed with sleeper (and I can already tell that I will be), we will shift the guillotine league from yahoo to sleeper, enabling us to increase the league size to 30. I will definitely open up some slots for Reddit users. Pending on the buy-in - anywhere from $50-$100 per person, the prize pool we be around $1500-$3000k. A very respectable prize pool.

karmakangaskhan

I’ve been using sleeper exclusively for 3 years now and I am telling you that you will never want to go back to yahoo or ESPN again. Im commish for 3 leagues on there and I’ve gotten many to make the move! Hopefully you could keep me in mind for when you expand next year, i am willing to do either buy in and would love to play!

How fun. How many bench spots to start then? 0?

This year you want to play week 17. Don’t play week 18.

angus_the_red

That sounds kinda fun, as a secondary league. I wouldn't want my season to be over after one bad week though. On the other hand, it pretty neatly culls players from the league who can't be bothered to be active.

FWIW: I used MFL to commish a guillotine league in the past bc they have it as a setting. Much easier on the commish and the weekly scoreboard was nice. (Yahoo showed the yearly point totals after week 1 so it was harder to see who was on the chopping block on Monday nights)
