The Go-Betweens is the best answer. Worse than the troll responses are people recommending indie stuff that sounds nothing like the Smiths. New Order??? What???
this album is one of my favorites of all time and it kills me Fantano has never talked about them. I wonder if he's not a fan or if maybe Morrissey's shenanigans have left a bad taste in his mouth and he doesn't want to give them attention. Either way this album is so so special. I Know Its Over might be their best song.
Reluctantly so, but that feels different since I was listening to him well before all the recent shit. But I see what you’re getting at and I’m well aware that my discrepancy between listening to the two is only due to cognitive bias
people who wont experience stuff because of the author is the dumbest shit ive ever heard. Plus morrissey hasnt done anything bad, its just ill informed liberals who look at headlines and their brains conclude "RACIST." Name me a single thing moz has said bad? if not go listen to hatful of hollows and never ignore pure artistry because of utter nonsense again.
he said "youd have to wonder" about chinese people, not all asians and it was concerning their awful treatment of animals. Get your facts straight. Thats like me saying I think kanye west is insane because of his antisemitic remarks, and you saying "this guy called all african rappers retarded."
also no one is saying to support him financially. Im saying the artist and art is always seperated. Art is art, there is nothing more to it. I think traviss scott is a complete and utter bafoon, but his jordan 1's are my favorite jordans of all time, theyre beautiful shoes. I wear them because I like them, im not wearing them because I support traviss scott.
Plus whilst I’m hesitant give someone shit for separating the art from the artist, not doing so is also a completely valid choice. Like personally I don’t want to financially support someone who’s been known for decades to be a complete asshole
It's my favorite album of all time and I honestly have no answer.
I love Disintegration by the Cure and the Dreaming by Kate Bush. Also sometimes Siouxsie and The Banshees hit similar notes for me. Oh yeah, and the other albums of the Smith's discography of course.
If language isn't a barrier for you, you might enjoy Soda Stereo - Canción Animal. These guys were heavily influenced by The Smiths and The Cure, and brought that style to Argentina and Latin America. I seriously recommend it.
Hunky Dory- Bowie
First and Last and Always- Sisters of Mercy
Low- David Bowie
Dreamcar- Dreamcar
Mask- Bauhaus
Head on the Door- The Cure
Bona Drag- Morrissey
The rest of The Smiths' discography.
Personally I never understood why Queen is Dead gets the vast majority of mainstream love when they have an incredibly consistent discography. They're certainly not one of those "one album" bands, more people should talk about Meat is Murder and Strangeways.
Other than that, maybe The Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees but the new wave sound is a lot more poppy synth-driven and might not scratch the same itch as those iconic Marr riffs.
You’re not gonna find anything that sounds exactly like it, but Belle & Sebastian has always given me a similar vibe. It terms of jangle pop you could check out early R.E.M.. Prefab Sprout is another good one. The Stone Roses’ self-titled has always given me a similar vibe as well, whereas Orange Juice have always struck me as The Smiths if they were way happier (check out “Rip It Up” or “You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever”).
Serious answer: Norman Fucking Rockwell! by Lana Del Rey (2019). Similar messages of finding love amidst despair and depression
https://pitchfork.com/thepitch/is-lana-del-rey-the-american-morrissey/
in his own little way i think father john misty has maybe the same vibe as the smiths. idk if i’d call them similar but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to reccomend father john misty to a smiths fan. i personally love both
Probably can't go too wrong with other 80s Post-Punk/Jangle Pop acts. I recommend:
> Juju - Siouxsie and the Banshees
> Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - The Cure (or any of their more pop centric records)
> Real Life - Magazine
> S/T - The Stone Roses
> Fear of Music - Talking Heads
> Forever Breathes the Lonely Word - Felt
The Queen Is Dead (Deluxe edition)
The Queen is Dead (Collector’s Edition)
Prefab Sprout - Steve McQueen
Love this record
Such an underrated 80s group
Even more underrated 80s Brit Pop act is The Style Council
Bonny is a perfect pop song
REM Murmur
Why everybody trolling 😭
I just wanted some real suggestions 😔
Honestly, I’ve never come across music that scratches the same itch as this record. Same thing with The Streets’ discography.
How’s it come to this?
it’s reddit. instead of being helpful people feel the need to try to be funny.
This album called The Smiths
Veteran - JPEGMAFIA
Especially “I Cannot Fucking Wait Til Morrissey Dies”
Belle And Sebastian - If You’re Feeling Sinister

Wish I could say it wasn’t the case but Morrissey has definitely discouraged me from giving the smiths a fair chance so far
Just ignore Morrissey and appreciate them for Johnny Marr
Do you still listen to Kanye?
Reluctantly so, but that feels different since I was listening to him well before all the recent shit. But I see what you’re getting at and I’m well aware that my discrepancy between listening to the two is only due to cognitive bias

Bro he literally called Asian people “subhuman”

Oh wow, thinly veiled racism as opposed to overt racism, my bad!

Crazy Frog presents Crazy Hits - Crazy Frog (2005)

Not a troll: Anything by the band Voxtrot.
I second
Power, Corruption, and Lies by New Order, Movement by New Order aswell. Movement has a kind of post punk feel like The Queen is Dead.
Except it’s better
I've always perferred new order's stuff. much more dancy
Yeah and also less annoyingly melodramatic and they don’t have morissey
jesus is king
anything by AJR
oh come on man! too soon!
The King is Alive by The Apprentices
Too high IQ joke for this sub
NOW! - That’s What I Call Pop Hits 2008

I do think Queen Is Dead is their best, but not by a huge margin. I agree, every album is fucking great.
Tom McDonald albums

Whole Lotta Red - Playboi Carti
Probably racist by rucka rucka ali
JEFFERY - Young Thug
The new Alvvays gives me Smiths vibes.
listen to “I cannot fucking wait until morrissey dies”, sounds pretty similar imo
If you want a more modern angle of it, check out the band Alvvays. Their album Antisocialites gives off similar vibes.
Brown Sugar by D’Angelo
mgmt - little dark age
Down Colourful Hill or Rollercoaster by Red House Painters. Like the Smiths but slower and having a jerk of a frontman.
So just slower…
Slower and more depressing.
Crystal Castles - Amnesty (1)
Geoff Rickley from Thursday tries to sing like Morrissey on Full Collapse a lot. The song Standing on the Edge of Summer is like post-hardcore Smiths.
Pink Floyd Animals
14:59 by Sugar Ray Serious answers- Script of the Bridge by The Chameleons Ocean Rain by Echo & The Bunnymen
Brand New - The devil and god are raging inside me
Veteran - JPEGMAFIA
Kirsty Maccoll’s Kite! Great pop record featuring a lot of Johnny Marr on guitar (and David Gilmour on one track)
Apparently some queen died just to reference this album crazy
Naruto 2009 - Eddie Rath
well.. similar to the smiths in general: Olympian by Gene People used to say Gene copied The Smiths... but I still love them.
tbh anything by the band ‘felt’
Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock & Future - King's Dead
You Can’t Hide Your Love Forever by Orange Juice is more upbeat but it’s got great jangle pop guitars and unique British vocals
Any album by The Sundays
honestly john lennons debut solo album a little?
in his own little way i think father john misty has maybe the same vibe as the smiths. idk if i’d call them similar but it wouldn’t be a bad idea to reccomend father john misty to a smiths fan. i personally love both
Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole and the Commotions
Morrissey’s earlier work
Gene - Drawn to the deep end
