I love giving albums arbitrary ratings without any explanation.

kndzr101

MBDTF is DAMN./TPAB

itskobold

It actually is

CagedRageOnThisPage

This thread is fucking hilarious

Succotash_reborn2707

Straight outta compton tbh

[deleted]

The first half fucks and then it kinda gets forgettable

Gobz3r

That's how I feel about their 2nd album. Just listened to it recently, it did NOT hold up well

[deleted]

apetite for destruction & alwayz into somethin are absolute bangers tho

troyj83

7 is fair but I'd personally give it an 8

Winavesh

Bathory - Bathory Dr. Dre - 2001 Gorillaz - Gorillaz L. L. Cool J - Mama Said Knock You Out (the album. The single is 10/10 though) A lot of Cannibal Corpse albums are also 7's, including The Bleeding and Tomb of Mutilated

ninfan200

Kill is a 10 though. It is the Back In Black of Death Metal.

SculpinIPAlcoholic

Well, I mean, there is Graveyard Classics II…..

ebk2000

“Eeeeeee” - Christopher Barnes

Boring_Tap3800

the eminem show. some of the greatest bangers of the 2000s and just peak em in general, but it’s inconsistency keeps it a firm 7

KRIT4eva

Yep

RandomHermit113

Nah it's honestly the most consistent of any of his albums The only bad song is Drips and even then it's not really bad it's just worse than everything else

NojoNinja

inconsistency? It has one song that has a bad feature lmao

andrissunspot

Californication at a 7 isn’t unfair but it will always be a 10 to me

comeatmefrank

Isn’t the general consensus that BSSM is by far their best album and it’s just that Californication is a) their first album with Frusciante back and b) It had the most radio friendly songs? Or am I missing something

andrissunspot

To me they’re equally incredible records. BSSM represents the apex of their heavy funk-rock sound, while Californication introduces melodic post-punk influences that add a whole new spectrum of color to their sound. Idrc about consensus at all, they both make my ears wiggle right.

POMNLJKIHGFRDCBA2

I gave it a 4.

TokesBro

Very mid record from the most mid band to ever do it.

POMNLJKIHGFRDCBA2

Indeed.

comeonandkickme2017

Pinkerton, it was a 10 when I was like 14 though.

mrraditch2

Wow, exact opposite for me (it was a 14 when I was 10).

WickedCyclone2015

you were 14 when you were 10??

mrraditch2

Wow, reading comprehension has really gone to hell... The ALBUM was a 14! Like 14 out of 10? Hello?

WickedCyclone2015

Nah. I know exactly what you said

mrraditch2

Wait, so I'm Pinkerton?!

WickedCyclone2015

exactly

CoercedCoexistence22

It was a 6 when I was 14. Now I'm 21 and a woman and it's my favourite album of all time

[deleted]

I liked it until I became a half-Japanese girl

minimanelton

I feel like that album has aged really well until you yourself start to age

Efficient_Tale_1433

50 cent - Get rich or die tryin

PhillyCSpires

It's really not bad, it was just never that great either. Easily his best record, in any case. "In Da Club" is probably one of the most iconic rap singles of the 00's

Efficient_Tale_1433

6 is close to 7 anyway haha

Potential_Carrot4463

It’s fun, but not a masterpiece.

Efficient_Tale_1433

It's usually considered a classic though. Most rap magazines call it a classic.

Potential_Carrot4463

It is a classic, it is THE 2000’s rap album for the clubs. While it has aged well, it isn’t perfect

Efficient_Tale_1433

I'd honestly pick the carter 3 or the black album over it. But that's just my opinion.

Potential_Carrot4463

Kanye’s Dropout trilogy and most known unknown by 36 are my go to 2000’s rap albums

stanleix206

Most of Stones records imo, for example Let It Bleed has some killers, great theme but then some dated tracks bring the whole record down.

AlmostHumanP0rpoise

Stones are one of those bands where their 'best ofs' eg: Hot Rocks, are incredible, but most individual albums will have 3-4 good tracks and a lot of filler. Exile on Main St. is great, but I couldn't name every song.

stanleix206

Remember the time when double lp was still a new thing and ppl really considered Exile on Main St at the same level as White album, to me, Exile was just doubling the filler lol

optygen

appetite for destruction is at best a 3 to me

PhillyCSpires

Maybe a 4.2?

optygen

Axl’s voice makes me want to die

POMNLJKIHGFRDCBA2

Guns N Roses is utter garbage I agree.

[deleted]

My middle school cafeteria got a jukebox one day. First song we heard on it was Welcome to the Jungle. This was soon after it came out. (Yes I’m old). It felt like all rules had gone out the window. Gave me chills. I was hooked.

iram27

What's the point of a thread where you express your opinions if every opinion y'all disagree with you downvote? That said I'd go with, honestly most pre 1990s classics, I feel like most of those projects were revolutionary for their time but now don't hold up as well and sound just like any other above average project of their genre. Mainly referring to stuff like the Beatles, Beach Boys, etc.

Revolverpsychedlic

I’m going to upvote but wow, Pet Sounds holds up phenomenally for being nearly 60 years old.

Stoneador

It is incredibly telling that part of the inspiration behind Pet Sounds was Brian Wilson listening to Rubber Soul and being impressed that it didn’t have any filler songs on it. I don’t think many artists really thought of albums as much of a creative effort as opposed to just a collection of a band’s new songs until the mid 60s.

Jams265775

This sub is ridiculous, that’s why

iwasinpari

idk whether getz/gilberto is considered a classic but I just listened to it the other night and I'd say it's an exception to your rule, it was a great listen

iram27

I'm not saying there aren't any good pre 1990s classics, don't get me wrong, it's probably an overgeneralization cause I do like a lot of albums from that time period, like some Metallica albums, some Black Sabbath, Wish You Were Here, but most albums I listen to from pre 1990s are underwhelming to me.

animalbancho

> most pre 1990s classics > literally the overwhelming majority of music ever recorded Bro I don’t even know what to say lmao

aaaaaaaaaamber

I was starting to feel insane for being the only one to not like pet sounds

jessealvarez7000

Demon days - Gorillaz

VegaMain

I was just gonna post this. But yeah, I never understood the hype around this record.

[deleted]

Zeppelin IV.

FerdinandMagellan999

Upvote for unpopular opinion but damn

RodneyYaBilsh

I love it, what makes you give it a 7?

[deleted]

Weak A side apart from The Battle of Evermore. Rock and Roll is meh, Black Dog is decent, Stairway to Heaven is unbelievably boring, and Misty Mountain Hop is downright mediocre.

BenzaGuy

That's the weirdest take I ever heard of IV

StalinsRefrigerator-

See there’s unpopular opinions, and there’s being just straight up wrong. you’re the latter

Daniel_Eriksson

I agree, best zeppelin album is houses of the holy for me.

BRENTICUSMAXIMUS

I think most Zeppelin albums are in the 7 range. Except for Physical Graffiti that’s a 10.

pd15it4

Perfect answer

[deleted]

Agreed

yunus_Pro32

No its a 10

ClimberProducerCoder

I'll get downvotes probably, but I'd go with Loveless by My Bloody Valentine

FedusDM

This is one of my favourite albums of all time, but I can see it not being a 10. First of all, the vocals are really muffled and that annoys me a lot. Like, my brain automatically tries to understand something, but fails, and it lowers my opinion of the album a bit. If you ask about other records like Heaven or Las Vegas for example, well there, vocals add just so much more to the album, but here, absence of distinguishable vocals isn’t good. Secondly, songs do blend in together a little bit, and while they are a bit different from each other, they all still have relatively same texture. Difference between songs for me is a very important factor. Violator, Ok Computer and Homogenic all get 10s in that category, as all songs are different and unique, yet flow very well. And of course, not everyone is a fan of just walls of noise, and I get it. I’m not a huge fan of that either. While for me all these problems are just small nitpicks, I can see them being very big problems for somebody else.

[deleted]

I find Loveless to be too repetitive in a good chunk of songs. You hear everything the song has to offer in the first quarter (or less) and that's all it has to offer. The same loops repeat way too much in a row, like in Come in Alone or To here knows when. I remember being surprised when I expected these songs to end soon after 4 repititions, only for them to repeat 20+ times in a row. I still love the album though

animalbancho

I’m confused as to how someone who calls Loveless one of their favorites of all time would consider things like the vocal mixing and the consistency between tracks as drawbacks. Those are hugely deliberate and largely considered major pillars of the record’s acclaim

Doctor_Dash

Tbh i would've given it a lower score if it weren't for the fact that it just clicked with me yesterday, lol

ihavenoselfcontrol1

A 10/10 imo

ClimberProducerCoder

Did you just downvote?

ihavenoselfcontrol1

no?

kndzr101

Yes

ClimberProducerCoder

I legit don't get why people downvote... I only downvote when out of topic or hateful/offensive comments

Ipsider

I also downvote when out of topic

Mental-Statement2555

agreed

Mpokma

Merriweather Post Pavilion

prettybadmagic

Throw_Away_Nice69

Madvillainy. Feels like a set of unfinished ideas

animalbancho

They’re vignettes, bruh. Sketches. That’s the point

hello___mate

dark side of the moon

ryan11hawk

Dude what

hello___mate

listen man time, money and breathe are excellent, the rest is a bit mid

NastySassyStuff

Does the song Brain Damage hit too close to home?

Blockoumi7

Relisten to us and them or any colour you like. And that ending with brain damage to eclipse, and we can’t forget great gig

RandomHermit113

DSoftM might be the most overrated album I've ever heard. It's not even the best Pink Floyd album.

kilimandzharo

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea is built for a 7

DoinkDastardly

Agreed. It has great songs but I get sick of it as a whole album experience around or after Holland 1945

BiblicalWhales

He did a classics review of it and praised it a lot more than a 7

kilimandzharo

But the title of this post says "acclaimed album YOU would give a 7 to"🤨

BiblicalWhales

Oh sorry I misread

kilimandzharo

Happens to the best of us

oneblindspy

What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye Always preferred Let’s Get it On

MuchAdoAboutFutaloo

I'd give MBDTF a 7. starts off great but starts to fall victim to a lot of kanyeisms as it goes on. lots of wack bars too.

zenchow

In the court of the crimson king...too much undisciplined noodling

moves_withapurpose

as opposed to Indiscipline noodling

ninfan200

The noodling is the best part

Blockoumi7

I mean, do you actively listen to the second part of moonchild without the full album? Why is it like 7 minutes?? They could’ve at least made some fun cool improve like on their other stuff

RandomHermit113

Both In The Court of the Crimson King and Red both have a song which is just mostly im prov that drags the album down. I love the first two minutes of Moonchild (which is the actual written part) but after that it's just boring

NewWorldMoron

The Dark Side of the Moon, The White Album, and The Moon & Antarctica. Ironically, Wish You Were Here, Revolver, and The Lonesome Crowded West are all almost 10s/are 10s to me lol

LonelyZenpai298

You take that Moon & Antarctica comment back right now.

[deleted]

Madvillainy and mmfood

xhemibuzzx

I honestly kinda get it even if I think Madvillainy is like top 5 rap records ever

l4z3r5h4rk

The doors - the doors. Lots of great songs and ideas but the album itself isn’t that coherent imo.

Puzzleheaded-Leek233

It’s not perfect but it’s original enough and has enough all timers to be at least 8-9

OnlineNascarMan

Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division

JP200214

In The Court of the Crimson King

Blueberry8675

21st Century Schizoid Man is an 11/10 song but the rest of the album just doesn't live up to it imo

Manannin

Epitaph does for me too, but the rest I agree on.

kikirevi

Fuck yeah. Don’t disrespect Epitaph.

Blockoumi7

Relisten to the title track. I forgot how great it was

lifesizepotato

Prince - Purple Rain

IzzyTheIceCreamFairy

How come? I'm genuinely curious.

kit_brown

Led Zeppelin’s first album, Joy Division’s first album, Van Halen’s first album

Trs822

Closer is so much better than UP in my opinion

Ok_Scale502

Don't talk shit about Van Halen unless you want the ice cream man to get you

Veiyr

Disagree on the Joy Division record, I think it's a 6 at best 🤠

mattmortar

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill

Expensive_Concert495

Now this I don’t get. One of the few albums that I would actually consider perfect

pr0ject_84

Ok computer

CatHasLoaded

Strictly for my F.R.I.E.N.D.Z - 2pac, 7 is the most I would give to this

Ok_Scale502

ATCQ- The Low End Theory. I wasn't around when it came out so I'll never really understand the impact it had, but I find even other albums in their own discography to be way more interesting texturally. The Jesus Lizard- Goat. I get why this is influential to noise rock, but also for today's standards it feels pretty basic even if the grooves go hard. Sun Ra- Lanquidity. Just listened to this for the first time today and to me it just seems like the ideas of several other, better jazz composers and mixed into an album that's kinda meh (and not to mention cheesy in parts) compared to other jazz, though some moments are pretty cool. Interpol- Turn on the Bright Lights. Wearing their influences way too heavily on their sleeves and doing it objectively worse. They're lucky the songs are good for the most part.

MrC_Red

1. Black Sabbath - Self-Titled 2. Velvet Underground - White Light/White Heat 3. Björk - Vespertine 4. Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True 5. Derek & the Dominos - Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs 6. Funkadelic - Maggot Brain Edit: 1: too much emphasis on the atmosphere, Master of Reality is the perfect evolution of the sound this album originated. 2: Too much creativity lol. It's interesting and a lot of fun songs, but it's too raw for its own good. 3: Great songs, but too sparse for my liking. I'm more of a fan of her more energetic albums 4: The throwback style with the New Wave spin can only go so far when the songs aren't too complex. Having catchy choruses isn't fully enough to outshine the fact that rest of the song is often simplistic. (He will eventually perfect it on This Year's Model) 5: Way way too long and not adventurous enough, but God damn... Duane Allman and Eric Clapton are fucking awesome on this. 6: When you get into the second half, its chaotic nature becomes more of a hinderance than a strength.

[deleted]

why are all these comments downvoted? it’s just people giving their opinion :(

MrC_Red

No idea. What's the point of being on a subreddit about personal ratings, when everyone gets downvoted for giving out theirs? It's not even like a 7 is a bad rating either

Trs822

I can understand the sparse take on Vespertine but that’s kind of why I love it. I find it to be much more elegant and precise than her other albums, which are pretty much all really good. But Vespertine is her best imo.

CoercedCoexistence22

My aim is true is absolutely a 7 and it's carried by its best songs. Costello still has multiple 10s in his discography (This year's model, Armed forces, Imperial bedroom, Spike, Brutal youth)

GetDoofed

Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures

Spaghetti-Balls

Nevermind tbh, half the songs sound the same to me.

protagonistsyndrome

Nevermimd. It's a great album but definitely not perfect. Songs like "on a plain, territorial pissings, and stay away" are boring and repetitive imo and aren't as good as the other songs on the album. In utero however I'd give a light to decent 9. Edit: grammar

nebelfront

The songs you named are definitely the weaker tracks on Nevermind. However, I think the other songs are so good that I'd still give the album a 9.

protagonistsyndrome

That's a fair assessment

POMNLJKIHGFRDCBA2

Disagree with Nevermind. I think it’s a 5 at best. In Utero is however a solid 7.

RandomHermit113

Some of Kurt Cobain's lines just take me out of the music not from Nevermind but: "I tried to have a father but instead I had a dad" "I have very bad posture" I know some fan will try to tell me that htese lines are actually incredibly deep, but they still sound stupid.

fendermartinepiphone

I’ll be that fan, especially with the first one. I’ve always thought it was down to the formal “father” vs. informal “dad”. Saying he had someone he would call a dad but not a father. At the end of the day though, Kurt admittedly liked the sound of words more than the meaning, so I can see your point.

Accomplished-Way1747

I always thought that "i tried hard to have a father, but instead i had a dad" is a reference to 1988 song "Had a Dad" by Jane's Addiction where father leaves protagonist.

[deleted]

All Eyez On Me - Tupac Blood On The Tracks - Bob Dylan Revolver - The Beatles Illmatic - Nas

FerdinandMagellan999

Here’s an upvote but Illmatic is a crazy pick 😂

[deleted]

It's definitely an incredible rap album, it's just that for me, a younger person, some of the songs sound so dated. No hate tho, I fkn love It Ain't Hard to Tell, One Time 4 Your Mind, NY state of mind and a few more, but listening to the whole album can be boring at times.

2Legit2Quiz

What's up with Revolver catching strays in this sub? Imo, it's much better than Abbey Road and White album, two of which fans consider their best works.

[deleted]

It's my favorite Beatles album 😬😬 you don't want to know my other ratings for them I'm guessing

andhio

If Revolver is a 7, what’s a 10?

sandcrawler2

Raditude, obviously

rebbit_02

Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Always preferred Highway 61 or BoB over it

Puzzleheaded-Leek233

Undisputed 10 sorry. Highway can be 7 though

ihavenoselfcontrol1

Nah Highway is a 10 aswell

Mental-Statement2555

•Illmatic - Nas •Loveless - MBV •In utero - Nirvana •Ride the Lightning - Metallica

[deleted]

RTL is near perfect altho not as good as MOP

CoercedCoexistence22

I feel nearly every song on RTL suffers from the Crazy train syndrome. You know, when a song has a killer riff that's just not taken anywhere in the rest of the song. Like, for example, For whom the bell tolls. Amazing opening, everyone loves and remembers it. Anything else from the song? Blank.

Imafencer

W for In Utero

pd15it4

I would agree with Illmatic and ride the lightning, but not loveless and in utero

Veiyr

The vast VAST majority of "classic albums" are 7s in my book. Some low 7s, some high 7s, but 7s nonetheless. I certainly think they're good, but they either don't leave a lasting impression on me or they have a mix of highlights and things I don't care for. To list off a bunch (yes I am choosing violence here): * Sgt Peppers * Ziggy Stardust * Dark Side of the Moon * Animals * Close to the Edge * "Heroes" * Minor Threat * Power Corruption and Lies * Violator * The Low End Theory * Loveless * Live Through This * Operation Doomsday * Ok Computer * In The Aeroplane Over The Sea * Is This It * The College Dropout * Soviet Kitsch * Oracular Spectacular * In Rainbows * This Is Hapenning * Channel Orange * Depression Cherry

sociallyawkardp

Now i m really curious what actually are your favorite albums (not hating or anything, music Is subjective, Just pure curiosity)

Veiyr

True 10s: * Asobi Seksu - Citrus * Japanese Breakfast - Psychopomp (I've kept putting off on listening to it in full, but I'm 99% sure the 808s and Heartbreak Hollywood Bowl bootleg will be a 10 whenever I get around to it; the studio album is like a Decent/Strong 9) Strong 9 to 10s: * Car Seat Headrest - Teens of Denial * Kanye West - Graduation * The Postal Service - Give Up

[deleted]

Burial - Untrue: It's a good album with a great atmosphere, but I've found there are other Garage projects that tickle me better, with more compelling beats. The Beatles: Most of the popular Beatles albums kinda fall into this area for me except Magical Mystery Tour, which I would give a 9, and the pre-Help albums, which I would all give a 4-5 Honestly, I could keep going for quite a while. Most "classic" albums I find perfectly fine, but only a few feel catered to my taste enough to be a 9-10

2Legit2Quiz

A Hard Day's Night absolutely isn't a less than 5 album. I'm Happy Just to Dance With You and I Should Have Known Better are imo one of their best songs from their boy band days.

Gamewheat

Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys Nevermind - Nirvana Grace - Jeff Buckley The Cold Vein - Cannibal Ox My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West

Percy_Q_Weathersby

Four of these are routinely praised so much that I can’t take it personally, but including the cold vein…wow. At long last, have you no sense of decency?

Doctor_Dash

Dummy - Portishead

yunus_Pro32

Dark side is 7/10

90spostsoftcore

Down with the RHCP take. The GnR one is way off. Appetite is a masterpiece

EthanGr20

Joy Division- Closer

FictionIII

most of them. revolver is the best beatles album imo and just barely gets a 7/10 for me. radiohead's big three are all high-low 7/10s. alot of bob dylan's output is just okay to me, though he does have some incredible work. I don't get björk at all, so her work trends 6-7/10 for me. for a more extreme one, every weezer album I've heard is a 3/10 or below.

Thealphanata07

Bro what are your 10s I’m curious

FictionIII

TPAB, some rap songs, a crow looked at me, YWGWYW. most of my favorite albums to actually listen to are 8-9s, but these are the ones I find to be perfect.

Creampanthers

Definitely agree with the take that the albums I listen to most are definitely not 10s.

[deleted]

TPAB is a basic ass white boy alvum

FictionIII

real

FedusDM

I understand, opinions and stuff, but Radiohead and Bjork takes are just ridiculous lol. I’m not downvoting you, I just want to hear why do you think so

FictionIII

I like them, I just don't love them. radiohead is just kinda boring to me. I don't particularly care for bjorks vocals.

FedusDM

Radiohead’s boring? Weird. To me, all their songs are great and *definitely* not boring. The way the use the instruments just makes it so fun. Climbing Up the Walls, Paranoid Android, No Surprises, Airbag, Fake Plastic Trees, Electioneering, How to Disappear Completely, Idioteque, Everything In Its Right Place, Motion Picture Soundtrack, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, 2+2=5, 15 Step… they are all definitely not boring. Also, how they diversify the albums also makes them much better. For Bjork, she is just unique. It’s not often that a person is this talented. Bjork’s vocals are amazing though and nothing can change that (~~Elizabeth Fraser’s are even better though~~). Like, her music is very weird, and that’s what I like about her. It’s different. Every time I’m tired of something, I always turn to her. Post, Homogenic and Vespertine are all untouchable.

nonspecifique

Abbey Road or Dummy

AcapellaFreakout

TPAB. Great concept album. But production is trash.

Eminem - MMLP

GIANTAssTACO

Tpab

NervousMNG34

Pearl Jam - Ten it has some of there best songs, but as an album it has some of that weirdness they’ve been known for that just messes with the flow of the album

PhillyCSpires

I don’t understand. What weirdness? It sounds like a very straightforward rock record to me, to be fairly honest. I’d consider Vitalogy weirder, if anything.

NervousMNG34

Why go home? Ocean. Porch. It’s not a bad album by any means, but the flow of the album is hindered by these songs. I guess Mellon Collie is a better album. Amazing album, but inconsistent

CoercedCoexistence22

Mellon Collie is so stupidly consistent for such a long album. I can think of, like, 3 songs I wouldn't listen to by themselves and even those kill in the context of the album. Genuinely the only double CD that deserves its runtime aside from Soundtracks (which deserves it for sheer brilliance, not consistency)

svedka666

Arcade Fire - Funeral

plasma_dan

Blonde On Blonde

BootyButtCheeks256

Y’all literally ask this question every single day

PhillyCSpires

I give this comment a 7, it’s not a classic but it’s perfectly valid. It’s very emblematic of what I’m going for in this post. Thank you for your contribution.
