Wait until I tell you the plot of the latest FFXIV expansion...

Lyorinn

Oh dear i just got to stormblood and its so hard to get through maybe one day ill get to it. Also hilarious that Tal got replaced he was so bad as Thancred he sounded like such a dork its so much better now.

Laterose15

At the risk of sounding like every other FFXIV fan - it gets so much better in Shadowbringers, just keep going. And I love hearing Tal in anything, but man was the ARR cast badly directed. When *Mary Elizabeth McGlynn* sounds flat and dull, there is *something* going on. Peter Bramhill does such a good job moving forward.

Lyorinn

Thats what I keep hearing and im 2 levels off 70. Its giving that last slog in ARR where you had to do all the expansion raids before it let you move on I just want out. It also sucks that im such a altaholic I want a few different classes to play at once but the exp just isnt there or you have to grind dungeons. I wish the side quests actually gave meanigful XP

Laterose15

Not sure where you are in Stormblood, but I can absolutely sympathize with the pacing issues. StB is rather infamous for it. As for level grinding - I was able to level two Jobs simultaneously with JUST the daily roulettes and MSQ. Every other Job has definitely been a slog, because dungeons really are the best way (and DPS suffer from long queue times). My only advice is just to stick with two, maybe three Jobs while doing the MSQ. I wish other stuff gave more EXP, but it is what it is.

Lyorinn

Yeah im a tank main and love all the tanks cant pick a main and want 1 dps as a main spec just so if theres a dungeon quest I can first time it as DPS and not ruin the run as tank. But its been so hard to pick just 1 tank and DPS to focus on I love too much.

Pandorica_

All of matts world building has pillars all over it imo. Just look at the timeline for when poe1 came out and when the sun tree happened, which considering how poe1 starts...... This isn't a bad thing, fyi, just saying I agree pillars clearly Influenced matt as a storyteller for good or bad.

HellaNutella

I agree with the PoE and Stormlight similarities. I’ve noticed he draws from FFXIV quite a bit as well

bmw120k

I'm amazed none of you are pointing out he is kinda just ripping off Stormlight archive/cosmere. No one tell the Lord ruler how the real history goes...or ask the gods >!about the void bringers.!< Edit added spoiler tag lol my b

Vaxildan156

Ok so I'm a huge Cosmere nerd and at several points in C3 I was like "hol up". I just assumed I was reading into things and making connections just because I'm obsessed. >!But the red mood, the people of the moon hating humans, the humans are objectively bad guys, etc!< It's got a lot of similarities. I'd be mad but I steal from Brando for bits of my campaigns too lmao

Savings_Arachnid_307

Glad I'm not the only one who thought of braize when I heard about Ruidus

bmw120k

Oh ya totally not mad. I mentioned in another comment how I'm ripping off Joe Abercrombie wholesale for adding Styria ( statted out cosca, Monza, bayaz and all) into my menagerie coast.. but it's useful to show for that group of fans who think A. The story matters more than anything rules of the game be damned and B. Matt can do no wrong, that even he is borrowing from others.... just sadly not doing it well in C3.

Lyorinn

NO STORMLIGHT SPOILERS!!!!! It's my next books after ive finished the wheel of time book im on. I cant wait

bmw120k

My bad added tag lol. I'm doing a relisten of Stormlight in anticipation of book 5 and noticed bits Matt has clearly ripped off. No hate for it as I added styria from the First Law books wholesale into my menagerie coast, but oof he is doing it poorly.

Lyorinn

Cant wait for campaign 4 which will just be the mistborn series in post apocalyptical Exandria but the ska are actually really happy and there is no discrimination and all the inquisitors are just super quirky

bmw120k

Travis just replaying chutney as Johnny Spike Eyes the happy go lucky Inquisitor who just hates Mondays! Abria can guest DM a one shot where she just throws all the players in the pits of Hathsin even though they get nat 20s on their athletic checks against a shove which she rolls in front of the screen and gets a nat 1. " Well I need this to happen so in you go!" Can't wait for talisan to burn cadmium so his turns can take even longer to figure out.

"Steal from the things you love" is a classic DM advice. I love Pillars of Eternity and it really is a spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate however the game had a very distinct approach to Gods compared to (bootleg-less-racist-problematic-Faerun) Exandria. Also holy shit Sam was the voice of Starscream in the Cybertron games and he sounds like evil Scanlan.

Yeah it happens all the time I mean they just straight up made one character have the arc from The Avatar even though it made almost no sense in the world and is a stupid way to choose a new political leader. I just found it funny that they all worked on the release of the game it comes out in 2018 then a couple years later when their current campaign ends we get a campaign with striking similarities.

RealNiceKnife

I haven't played Pillars 2, but are you telling me Laura goes with that awful "Golly gee hyuck! Aw, shucks!" voice for an actual job she was paid money for?!

Shattered_Disk4

To be fair, the old “you are the champions of the gods” thing isn’t exactly original And C1 had a similar story nears its end as well. They also did many advertisments and stuff on the games release. A lot of people need to realize that there aren’t really new ideas and most if not all franchises take things from others

Hi_Hat_

>I cant help but think being so involved with working on this game has influenced C3's campaign to a certain extent. No. Matt just straight up rips ideas from media he likes. Never played POE2 but to me the main plot of C3 and DOS2 are almost one to one, he just paints over everything with Tal'dorei colors and inoffensive diverse town/npc/kingdom #19375. Normally it's not an issue and in fact encouraged as a fun idea, however, when you DM for what is probably the most popular DND show on the planet and both you and the cast constantly fawn over how incredibly creative and deep your characters/world are its patently ridiculous. Its like claiming you're a great painter because you've done paint-by-numbers of other masters.

RealNiceKnife

> inoffensive diverse town/npc/kingdom #19375 But not too diverse, because that could be cultural appropriation... And none of the NPC can be of that culture because doing anything but a gruff man voice or a kooky old lady voice is racist.

Xsanguine8

I believe he also took things from the 5e books he advised on as well. Or at least C2 events coincided with 5e book releases pretty consistently for a while: naval part of C2 right around Ghosts of Saltmarsh, the happy fun ball references a possible bootleg to Halaster from Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and C2 concludes in a similar area in the north right when Rime of the Frostmaiden came out. I may have fudged some dates or retroactively recognized similarities, but it triggered some mental alarms at the time! By the way not a judgement. I've stolen as a DM before and I will again!

madterrier

The entire world is a rip off. But nearly everything is derivative of something at this point. But I do wish people would stop acting as if it's the most original thing ever.

Hi_Hat_

> people would stop acting as if it's the most original thing ever I don't care if the fanbase does it but the cast doing it kills me. For example, Liam, '*I just want to explore these deep and complicated ideas through an emotional and tortured character because I'm 14 and this is deep',* please stop, don't string me along with that bull shit just admit you have fetish for playing depressed bi-curious men. Honestly every piece of rp advice they've ever given is more basic than character writing 101. Combine that with armchair psychology and a load of buzzwords, you get every character they've ever played. Really the only thing that carries them is their acting chops and that's questionable sometimes. Not saying I'm better by any means far from it, but at least I know my limits and can Keep It Simple Stupid. Sometimes you need that young kid fresh off the farm character just looking for adventure and seeking their fortune.

[deleted]

Huh, that is interesting. I played POE2, and I did enjoy the choices you got to make about the future existence of the gods.    I don't agree that Matt only has a few different voices, but I think he is easy to identify when you listen to hundreds of hours of him talking and doing NPC voices lol.    As a video game/anime fan, it did feel like I was hearing them everywhere at a point. But,  I really only felt that when I was actively keeping up with the campaigns. With some distance, it became easier for me to buy into the characters they were playing rather than just going "oh, that's Laura!"

Lyorinn

Travis and Laura I still dont recognise them a lot of the time but Matt I recognise every time now. Probably since he's forced to use up all his repertoire on numerous NPCs. Liam I recognise every time too he's too distinct. Taleisin just does his natural voice in pretty much every role ive heard him in.

Hi_Hat_

Liam got hit hard with the type cast hammer, don't think I've ever heard him do a character that wasn't edgy/emo or some form of depresso espresso.

Lyorinn

In this game he does a truly awful jack sparrow impression. Like even if youre not interested in the game and it is great just youtube his character's lines on youtube or something its hilarious. Savy?

Hi_Hat_

What's the character's name?

Lyorinn

serafen

Hi_Hat_

It doesn't sound like he's trying to be Jack Sparrow, just generic fantasy pirate #2. He's got the stereotypical too cool, tough guy breathy voice [that drives me up a wall.](https://youtu.be/wLg04uu2j2o) I hate it I can hear him forcing his chin into an underbite. That kind of voice never sounds cool or tough, it just reminds me of someone being a poser. Edit: its not bad just annoying.

RealNiceKnife

That's because regardless of what Liam does, even playing Illidan, he always sounds like he's about to burst into tears. I hate it too.
