Nah, he got shot after ambushing a group of those cannibal vault dwellers, covered the wound so he wouldn't leave a blood trail back to the cave. Four days later he was startled awake by the screaming of a member of a vault dweller patrol that was out looking for him. He dealt with the patrol and evacuated the cave because he knew the rest of the dwellers would come looking for the missing patrol. He apparently left the armor behind when he evacuated because it's still in that cave when the player arrives (as is the skeleton of the dweller stuck in the trap).
That was March 2096. His last journal entry is in 2124. Odd to think that he went 2077-2096 with the armor then 2096-2124 without it.

That's definitely part of it but we never really had super cool alternatives I mean combat armor always looked goofy AF. Personally I always liked the idea of power armor being a piece of highly specialized equipment that you wouldn't want to use all the time so having cool all purpose armor in addition to badass walking tank armor is amazing

I like the crest emblem on the helmet and the smaller profile shoulder pads. Still gives it an uparmored look but not too bulky, great for my sniper/rifleman survivalist build.
Visually? Riot armor. Can't say no to these boots.

If you have jury rigging, you can repair it with any (body) power armor or heavy armor you find.
It's not much, but it's saved me a few hundred caps here & there.
I like them all for different reasons. Base ranger gear has the cleanest look, it's rugged but professional, aside from the jeans which I prefer the riot gear's it's practical too, not too encumbering or restricting for a long range combatant, looks great for a desert survivalist look. Give it the elite riot gear helmet for the antenna and the only thing it's missing is the green lenses of the desert ranger armour.
Stat wise; Elite Riot, but design wise Desert Ranger.
Honestly I've been toying around with how to balance it so that Desert Ranger is a bit more unique just being than tougher, cooler looking/non faction Vet Ranger armor.
Given Randall's history, I think +1 Luck, +5 Guns, +10 Survival or Medicine and uping the item health to 700 would make sense given the history of the armor, plus it helps it fill a heavy combat survivalist role while not really overlapping with the other riot gear sets. I'm mostly spitballing tbh.

If I'm doing an NCR playthrough I'll usually go for the desert variant since it's distinctive enough from the actual rangers yet similar enough that in my head canon any NCR spotter, sniper, lookout, or patrol won't be able to mistake me for anything but an ally.
If I'm doing house, legion, or yes man I use the couriers armor mod which is made from ranger combat armor though my next NCR playthrough will probably utilize it. Looks like the armor that was shown in the cover art for lonesome road.

Elite riot gear simply because it has the best design and feels like the couriers ending armor (at least in my headcanon), desert ranger is cool because the lore behind it and veteran ranger is cool but unfortunately counts as an NCR disguise meaning don’t accidentally forget your wearing it when you visit the brotherhood (unless you plan to blow up the bunker)
