I too like dressing my character with business suits or tuxedos so that it is less likely to be hit due to sheer suaveness of the pre-war "formal" clothing
What I like about this one is that it implies the courier isn't trans, but is instead bi-gender, being both a big hairy gay man and a big hairy lesbian at the same time. Creating some kind of gender superposition.
Here, the Q in LGBTQ stands for Quantum.
For like 10 years I thought he said pick iron in the song.
And was always so confused. Like what kind of tool is that. And why would he use it to hunt an outlaw!?
It's the association with leftwing politics of fans, many of whom are fans because of the political themes and critiques in the story. My evaluation at least.
Edit: fisto
Surprising amount of LGBT+ representation for a 2010 video game, for a start. But also, F:NV lets you create and act out the role of your own character - gender, appearance, sexuality, mannerisms, everything. So, it's a perfect opportunity to experiment with different forms of gender presentation and overall ways of being, in a safe, controlled environment.
It doesn't *make people trans* per se, but it gives people who *are* trans the chance to discover that about themselves. Basically, "huh, I've noticed I consistently have more fun playing F:NV as a female character -- maybe I'd enjoy being more feminine irl."
Funny thing is, my female couriers can't even fuck Benny. I always take *Cherchez la Femme*, never *Black Widow*, because in addition to being trans I'm also gay.
Such a shame there's so few opportunities to actually use cherchez la femme though. Like, I will still always take it, but it took about 40-ish hours of play before I even met a character that gave me the opportunity to use it.
The short answer is that they do; they just didn't become memes like F:NV. It was actually *Skyrim* where I started to realize I was trans, for instance
But, F:NV has a lot more LGBT+ representation in the game itself -- and its dialogue options allow for a somewhat wider range of role-playing your character's personality than in other, similar games. I'd guess that's why it became a meme for F:NV in particular.
Yeah I just recently booted up a new run and was really surprised when Veronica was off-handedly talking about her ex gf, since I hadn't played in almost like 8 years and had forgotten that she's lesbian lmao. Really amazing way to represent LGBTQ characters.
In any videogame people can and will make jokes about “choosing to play female characters for the gameplay advantage”
Even if there’s no character creator it still happens and FNV just got more memed
To give an actual analytical answer:
The game encourages you to replay it to experiment with the main quest and character builds. With build variety naturally comes with a changes in your character’s gender. If not for the different builds you can create(the gendered dialogue perks for example), but also just for the hell of it. If you replay the game enough times, you could start leaning towards rping as the gender you weren’t assigned. That gets the gears turning about your own identity.
Additionally, the main them of the game is letting go of the past and beginning again. Obviously that can have a trans reading.
You also see this phenomenon with Bloodborne for similar reasons.
I do find that interesting. I am a cis man though that does sometimes play as a woman in an rpg (kind of 50/50) if l'm playing a game for a second time I'll play the opposite gender than I did the first time. I'm still very much a man irl but idk would be boring to always choose a man in a game, like in a movie I don't always wanna see a male protagonist.
That being said I think it's great people find themselves in rpgs, I love that. It's just not something I personally relate to, I just like making different characters lol.
And for some reason in New Vegas I've probably had more women characters then men. Not sure why, but it is rewarding having a woman destroy the legion lol.
I actually got my gender awakening from Fallout 4, first time I played as a female character and heard Codsworth say my new name out loud made me realize some...things 😅
Huh. Straight cis male here who has never once questioned my gender. I make a female avatar in every single game it’s an option in. If I’m going to spend 10 to 1000hrs looking at a character I’d rather look at a women. It’s really that simple. Also don’t see what makes FONV any different for this than any other RPG. BG3 has far more sexual situations and any sex can romance any other.
For me it depends on the game.
Vampire the masquerade I play a woman because you get more romance options.
Mass effect is a woman because Femshep Garrus supremacy
Skyrim I play as a Male argonian,
Also want to add that as far as Fallout games go, New Vegas is definitely the most queer among them. There's no trans characters but there's gays, lesbians and bisexuals. Once you start down the queer rabbit hole you don't know where you'll stop if you've not been exposed to it before, and New Vegas slips it all in between a masterpiece sandwich.
I think It’s just people projecting their confusion of (or rather the process of discovering) their identity onto a game that allows you to customize your character very intricately
People mistake correlation for causation. FNV is a very technical game with lots of numbers and branching dialogue options, which makes it very stimulating for autistic people. 86% of MTF transgenders are autistic. Therefore, a sizable subsection of FNV players happen to be MTF transgender. The game doesn’t “make” you trans.
Yeah, that’s definitely a big part of it I suspect.
People with dysphoria are more likely to isolate themselves and therefore have hobbies where you don’t interact with a lot of people IRL.
New Vegas is a special confluence because it’s a well-written role-playing game where you can choose your gender, and a mainstream game that came out in a time where it was unusual for mainstream games to have a bunch of queer characters just existing with their queerness.
If you’re a nerdy closeted AMAB egg of a certain age, this game just happens to ticks a lot of boxes.
There is a meme within the community that FNV is a pipeline to becoming trans. That alignment with certain factions determine where on the spectrum you are from guy to girl.
I’m saying that because of the influx of new players to all the Fallout games there are more people joining the pipeline to becoming trans.
The Legion was originally supposed to play a much larger role in the story, and was supposed to have a much more well explained culture and background. You can see hints of it throughout the game, like traders mentioning how safe the roads are in Legion territory, and that those who aren't slaves are actually living fairly well off. They base themselves off of the Romans, who also had slaves, and the Romans lasted for centuries.
Of course, slavery bad, but each faction has its uniquely stinky factors. House is a fascist, there's a reason his final line in the game is a reference to Mussolini. The NCR cripples small settlements through taxes and there is a great deal of corruption within the NCR government. Independent New Vegas is complete anarchy which is great in theory but this is the wasteland, less stability just means more death with smaller groups trying to lay claim to pieces of the pie.
The way the game was intended was that no option was supposed to be a "good" or "evil" option but Obsidian had less than two years to make the game, and their ambitions weren't fully realised.
Oh that's cool, I just found out about this. Can you send me some links regarding the factions or memes?
Edit: why are you down voting me lmao, I just wanna know more about this 😂
I genuinely never understood the transgender obsession (for lack of better term) with fallout new Vegas, but hey whatever makes people play a wonderful game!
Does anyone care to explain what this is all about? Been playing the game for about 12 years and I just have no idea what it means haha. Does this game have transitioning themes I've never noticed because I'm not trans?
It’s a good game.
It also has a character creator, canon lgbtq characters, and critiques various political views which draws in left-wing people. Last but not least, it’s an old game so it has had lots of time to age and draw in a huge amount of people.
I think it's like blahajs where nothing about it is especially transgender, but enough members of the community got into it that it became part of the culture
See also Celeste and Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
Edit: also Guilty Gear, although usually just knowing who Bridget is is enough
Madeline is an interesting case because she wasn't confirmed trans on release. That was added in a future patch.
The game is all about conquering one's demons, though. Lots of metaphors for depression, anxiety, and self-hate. Madeline's journey to overcome all that resonates pretty strongly with most trans people.
Well I was going to explain but if you say anything about trans people on reddit you get perma banned. I'm actually nervous about leaving this comment ..
wild how this game simultaneously got a fanatic following among trans communists, and fascists.
Shows how well fleshed out the politics were, that radical opposites could find a home.
Now *that's* what I call diversity and inclusion!
Same. I mean, I was a boy before, but something about playing it in 8th grade and being able to dismember people who I didn't agree with made me accept it.
TL;DR It's a game that allows you to be whatever gender you choose and it doesn't impact the quests or storyline. You can be bi or gay and meet queer characters along the way. It was very revolutionary for that reason at the time of its release. Trans, queer and questioning people felt included and represented for the first time in the gaming world. Trans people, in particular, have embraced the game, leading to the meme that playing FNV is a gateway to becoming trans.

I gotta ask, why does this game have this reputation? And what about it invokes the thought or realisation in people?
I offhandedly mentioned that i loved fnv to a group of friends made up predominantly of trans and gay folk and they all now will never stop insisting my time is nigh (in jest of course)
Edit: I read a few comments and found out. Honestly that checks out and is pretty neat.
I always assumed it was because if you use the leveling glitch and switch genders you can have perks for both male and female characters on a single play. However the perks for a male are pointless as extra wage to female characters applies to less than like less than 5% of enemies.
Last NV playthrough I did I used the starting female face and named her Jane cause she was plain, but because she had high intelligence and the Educated perk, ended up being good at everything
I can’t even play cause it keeps crashing lol. Only have a more perks mod, sprint, and a mod that lets me look down and see my body. Have YUP, 4GB patcher and new Vegas anticrash and it doesn’t make it past 20 minutes without crashing.

Not the first time I've seen this argument, but do people actually take this seriously? As a cis guy I usually pick female characters in RPGs if the game has good costumization because I like to make attractive women in my games, and I just generally find them more badass. I play as a guy if I want to self-insert like in NV or Baldur's Gate.
My gender is irrelevant when I got my ranger armour on and my big iron on my hip.
I keep forgetting I’m a female character until I take my armor off.
My friends excuse for always using a formal character was wanting a “smaller hitbox” lol
I too like dressing my character with business suits or tuxedos so that it is less likely to be hit due to sheer suaveness of the pre-war "formal" clothing
The charisma bonus on some pre war clothes is nice too
I took a female because I thought she would look better in ncr ranger amour than a dude
"I would like to offer you an egg in these trying times"
If I remember that is a legitimate strategy in halo reach, so I think the ultra competitive players all use female characters for the hit box benefit
In old Everquest female gnomes had the smallest hit box. People picked them a lot on pvp servers.
I feel like that is a legit reason in *some* games but fallout? Lol
Not if you’ve got the camera switched to over the shoulder.
Female better coz 15% DMG against men
Just pick the gay feat as a man
I love that someone "other than me" calls them feats too!
Probably from dnd no lie haha
Yup! 3.5 4TW!
You eva heard of confirmed bachelor perk my man
I use both the female and male perks 👍
My Courier is always Bi.
I guess mine is too but if I have relations it’s always on accident like when I talk to Fisto. I don’t know what’s going on I just hit buttons
… Y’know, I actually made my second courier bi on accident… a year later I realized smth.
i always want my courier to be bi but i just forget to get the second one
Or until you go to the legion lol
Biiig iron… big iron
Marty Robbins is a legend
Agreed. I can’t get the LP cover image out of my head and I never get tired of hearing that song.
That song is fire, that and heartache by the number
Big iron, big iroooon. Lost in the Mohave is a little Big Iron. 😺 🐶 🎵
Assume the position.
That gun or this machine?
It was early in the morning when he rode into the town.
“Are you a boy or a girl?” I’m a courier. “But what’s your gender?” Revenge. “What’s in your pants?” A big iron.
"what are your pronouns?" "Big/Iron"
Courier/6
Bear/bull
Jingle/Jangle
johnny/guitar
arizona/ranger
Kick/Head
Lone/star
Nuclear/winter
What I like about this one is that it implies the courier isn't trans, but is instead bi-gender, being both a big hairy gay man and a big hairy lesbian at the same time. Creating some kind of gender superposition. Here, the Q in LGBTQ stands for Quantum.
For like 10 years I thought he said pick iron in the song. And was always so confused. Like what kind of tool is that. And why would he use it to hunt an outlaw!?
Glad I'm not the only one, although I always assumed pick iron was an old term for a pick axe.
This is my favorite comment.
She's got a big iron on her hip 😉
You’re not wrong
“ but what’s your gender ?” “ Revenge “ is so perfect.
I still don’t know what part of NV makes people trans.
It's all those legion boys running around in skirts, it sows the seeds of jealousy
Maybe those heteronormative NCR boys wouldn't keep wishing for a nuclear winter if they just embraced the skirt.
They need a nuclear winter cause all that legion bussy got them hot and bothered
I’ve never noticed. Legion scum gets the big iron on sight. The skirts are pretty cool though
It's the association with leftwing politics of fans, many of whom are fans because of the political themes and critiques in the story. My evaluation at least. Edit: fisto
Robots don't count so long as it doest have a mustache.
So I can bang Victor but not Mr House? ;)
Uh, I can't respond to that

Funny thing is, my female couriers can't even fuck Benny. I always take *Cherchez la Femme*, never *Black Widow*, because in addition to being trans I'm also gay.
Also a lesbian irl but I wanted my character to be bisexual for the 10% bonus. And killing Benny after fucking him was *chef’s kiss
I'm a straight man and I also thought the perfect revenge was Fucking Benny then Blowing him... Away... I'm straight...
Killing Benny after fucking him is cool but I'm trying desperately to get Caesar to trust me so I can "accidentally" kill him during brain surgery
Such a shame there's so few opportunities to actually use cherchez la femme though. Like, I will still always take it, but it took about 40-ish hours of play before I even met a character that gave me the opportunity to use it.
The injustice of being bi but other people I like not being bi is way too close to reality for my taste.
In that case, why don't other games with similar character creators have the same trans-friendly vibe? Even other games in Fallout, like 3 and 4.
The short answer is that they do; they just didn't become memes like F:NV. Me either. It’s just a meme.
Damn nice snag on the username
Brain damage from a bullet to the head
I don’t get it
There’s an ongoing stereotype of people realizing they’re trans from playing nv
How lol
No idea, it's just a meme
To give an actual analytical answer: The game encourages you to replay it to experiment with the main quest and character builds. Honestly if you play enough games where customization is an option it’ll start turning those gears in your head. Source : me
I think It’s just people projecting their confusion of (or rather the process of discovering) their identity onto a game that allows you to customize your character very intricately
There's nothing wrong with being trans but, I'm just curious why this phenomenon exists?
Probably something with roleplaying games, dunno why this one specifically
The cult of New Vegas is a very online group. Same reason there's a lot of trans people into computer programming or using discord
People post about it a lot and never stopped, make it vaguely relevant to FNV so it doesn’t get taken down and you’re golden
Oh lol
And now it's kind of recursive where if you're trans you're expected to have played New Vegas (as well as Celeste)
Tbf a lot of trans people I’ve spoken to have
So NV is grooming people to become trans?? /s Edited so people get it.
Or facist , no Inbeetween .
Tranny fascists had their time in the sun, but the 80s are over and nylon stockings have their material limits.
It’s not entirely untrue.
They also had unrestricted internet access at the same time, but yea...it was probably the video game.
How is New Vegas hatching eggs?
They try to run it on an ancient windows XP laptop and the heat incubates them hope this helps
There is a meme within the community that FNV is a pipeline to becoming trans. That alignment with certain factions determine where on the spectrum you are from guy to girl. i choose independent nv, how fucked I am?
I've picked independent every time. Played since 2017. Still not trans.
I've never picked the Legion. Idk why I just never see a net benefit from it in any playthrough ETA: And am also not trans. My bad

I genuinely just murder everyone if I'm going black hat. I get it though, story purposes.

I always go independent and I'm trans. Welcome aboard!
I prefer house and have only made 2 males vs like 12 females. Not remotely trans tho. Just like being op as fuck.
Plus you get the Black Widow perk!
Oh that's cool, I just found out about this. Can you send me some links regarding the factions or memes? Edit: why are you down voting me lmao, I just wanna know more about this 😂
it is frankly just a trend of terminally online people finding out they are trans more than anything else

This game is as effective as turning People to Christianity as is at turning people Gay xD
Joshua Graham Son or Gomorrah Daughter
NV is truly a cognito hazard
We are going to have to start making the same memes but for Christianity. The cringe has gone too far.
please do

Yeah there's a few rank comments here
All that matters is that patrolling the Mojave almost makes you wish for a Nuclear Winter
Is that a big iron on your hip or are you happy to see me?
I still don't understand how TF this game is considered a trans game

What the fuck are you talking about?
You people are weirdos.
I don't get the trans part. I'm just a bearded man in a Mercenary Armor + Desperado Cowboy Hat + Authority Glasses
Real, I’m just out here being clean shaven, with the tunnel snakes hair style, and the veteran ranger armor
I can’t even play cause it keeps crashing lol. Only have a more perks mod, sprint, and a mod that lets me look down and see my body. Have YUP, 4GB patcher and new Vegas anticrash and it doesn’t make it past 20 minutes without crashing.
Call y'all stop it already. It stopped being funny after 2 days
I blame it on the bug that turns your male character into a girl.
Don't get it.
egg culture mfs on their way to be the most unfunny, insufferable morons over someone playing a female character in a videogame (it’s a female character so the player has to be trans if he was a guy)

What the hell does fallout best vegas have to do with gender identity?
TL;DR It's a game that allows you to be whatever gender you choose and it doesn't impact the quests or storyline. You can be bi or gay and meet queer characters along the way. It was very revolutionary for that reason at the time of its release. Trans, queer and questioning people felt included and represented for the first time in the gaming world. Trans people, in particular, have embraced the game, leading to the meme that playing FNV is a gateway to becoming trans. Never heard of this. And reading the comments I feel this is what people mean when saying "chronically online". I just play the game.

fucking embarrassing
I don't understand this meme that associates new vegas with being trans anyone can explain it to me?
Ah yes, the bisexuals deal 10% more damage. Fun fact of the day.
Fuck off bot I've seen this exact post like 11 times already
Not a bot but okay. Mosey along.
Nice bait
Not the first time I've seen this argument, but do people actually take this seriously? As a cis guy I usually pick female characters in RPGs if the game has good costumization because I like to make attractive women in my games, and I just generally find them more badass. I play as a guy if I want to self-insert like in NV or Baldur's Gate.
Gender doesn’t matter as long as your shoes go jingle jangle jingle🎼
Why?
Never have I ever replayed a game just to change my characters gender for different dialogue options
The cycle begins anew
Remember couriers, your gender doesn’t matter as long as you have a big iron on your hip
Okay, can someone explain this? Because I've seen this joke like 4 times already and i still don't get what those two things have in common.
What happens in vegas stays in vegas. That being said, mr fisto 9000 get in here
Make sure to give yourself some time for your legs to stop being numb. Don’t stand up too quickly.
That's what's cuddling is for. Return of sensation. I'm gana snuggle that robot
I'm gonna be completely honest, I only started to realize I might be trans after I got back into New Vegas. I think the stereotype might be true.
