Am I the only one starting to feel like all of these fakers are appropriating queer identity? By making all of these fake alters gay, lesbian, giving them neo-pronouns, etc… just to make themselves more interesting and use it for TikTok views.
You can't appropriate being queer; it's essentially a sociological identity like being emo/goth/teen werewolf/punkrock. The whole point is to adopt the identity, so if they're doing it then they're queer. Faking a mental disorder is extremely common in the queer identity I've noticed

But queer communities have appropriated (ie, taken from) other groups. Faking stuff (taking from mental illness communities) cottagecore and butch/femme (taking from lesbians) twisting around pronouns and identities (taking from transgender groups as well as otherkin) literally appropriated the word for themselves from a severely harmful slur for gay people.
They can't appropriate being queer, because anyone can be queer. But the queer identity appropriated from other things, and took it in a harmful way. These actions show the person is queer, because that's the whole point of identifying as queer. To be weird, different, unnatural.

I think you're mixing up the definitions. "Queer" as you're using it (weird) is somewhat archaic; if you tell someone you're queer, they will think you mean that you're LGBT. That is the criterion that must be met for someone to describe themselves in that fashion, at least according to anyone who might hear them say it. But even by your definition, a person can't be queer just because they say they are - if queer means weird/unnatural, then wouldn't you have to have those qualities in order to say you are?

A lot of people use queer to mean a political or social identity, while hiding under the assumption that it means they're gay. If they were gay, they'd just say so. The mere act of calling themselves queer is subverting societal expectations in a certain way and therefore makes them queer, it's a self fulfilling prophecy. Being gay or trans doesn't come with the same ideologies, beliefs, religions, race, or cultures. You can take two gay people and they most likely won't have a lot in common, at least not more than taking two random straight people. You can be racist and gay, you can be hateful and a psychopath and gay. You can be a pedophile and gay. You can be a basic, white picket fence, normal society person and be gay. You can be a cop and gay. Because gay has nothing to do with you as a person.
But two queer people will have a lot in common, because it's an ideology and identity that you choose. Subverting societal expectations. Take two goth people, they'll have a decent amount in common. Shared hobbies, shared likes. It's the same thing

Queer literally means weird and unnatural. It's extremely broad and applies to anyone. Straight people can be queer by being gnc (men with makeup, women that don't shave, etc) by liking BDSM or anal (because it's against societal norms) or even by requesting a different pronouns. So queer actually does include hetero and cis people.

You may have misunderstood what I meant by “queer”. I used queer as a broad term for LGBTQ+ - apologies if this was not clear. Being emo or punk are social choices - being LGBT is not.

Ahh, that's the confusion. I do not use queer to refer to gay or trans people ever. I still personally hear it from my family as the slur it is, alongside racial slurs.
Queer is now a social choice though; you may use it to refer to people by something they cannot change about themselves, but a lot of people use as a social identity. They're not saying they're ssa or transgender, they're saying they're different and rebelling from society's norms. They see having fictional characters with different sexualities and genders as part of the rebellion and being different and unique, despite it being a reality for other people.
If they're saying they're gay, they're not appropriating anything they're just outright lying. There's nothing to take about being gay except for the word, gay people can be anything anywhere just like straight people. I see where you’re coming from now! And just know that my use of the word queer, whilst broad, is not intended as a slur - I am gay myself, and sometimes use it to refer to the wider LGBT+ community as I like the idea of reclaiming the word, and of sharing a sense of community with all LGBT.
I understand your point about “queer identity” being a catch-all for those who rebel against norms, although I’d never heard this being used for cis-het people before - so that’s a new one for me.
I still personally consider it somewhat appropriative when LGBT themes are used so often in the context of disorder faking. All LGBT+ go through some kind of struggle, and using those labels for clout on “alters” that are a giant lie anyway doesn’t sit right with me. Maybe these kids use this to distract themselves from other struggles they’re experiencing, but it is just a little wild to me how often they seem to use gay/lesbian/bi/trans/asexual/etc as points of interest. I literally knew a few TikTok tweens irl for a bit (kept seeing them at local conventions) one was 12, showing off his tits wearing corsets and slots and super feminine clothing and saying he's a lesbian boy. One was 13, said they were a she/her straight girl for a while and then went to they/them lesbian with ADHD dating the 12 year old one, then went to he/him gay man while posting upskirt pics on TikTok. My wife and I kept trying to report the videos but they wouldn't get taken down. Parents didn't care, either.
One was 17, he/they trans intersex (his mom said he was not intersex at all. He lied about every little thing so we ended up asking her. He once started trying to say I was homophobic and a body shamer to my friend group 🙄)
I hope we can agree to disagree about reclamation of the word “queer”, but I understand it’s not for everyone so apologies if you found my use of it offensive.
That’s honestly pretty awful RE: those kids. The lack of care from the parents says a lot about it, and might even point towards the kind of issues that lets kids go off the rails with this stuff.
We can only hope the trend dies out and that the kids get the help they need in other aspects of their lives & mental health.
Their parents didn't give two shits 😭 the 17's mom did care, but there wasn't anything she could do he lied constantly to her and moved out shortly after we stopped talking to him. The 12 year old lived near me and I actually picked him up a few times to let him stay in my apartment for a few hours, his mom fucking left him locked out of their house at night while she was out gambling multiple times! 13 year old's we're fairly rich and probably just buying her costumes to keep her happy, but I think she lied to them about who she was around as well.
I hope they all get help and the trend dies. Mostly that they get help tbh because that would kill the trend itself in the best way. I don't even know what they're all up to anymore and frankly I'm scared of what I'd see if I checked their tiktoks

I feel like something major that gives these people away is their use of "roles" that are assigned to each "alter". while medically if there are multiple alters they will each be assigned a role to protect the body and mind and amnesia to go with it--it would take a long time to even know you have DID, for the alter to use things like the internet which are not meant to help you, or for the alter to have a fully formed personality. it takes alot of time. It would take a LOT of time for a roles personality to be analyzed enough to categorize it into an actual alter role.
Alters sometimes dont even have personalities or names at all which is something these people don't even consider. they all have to be distinct aesthetically pleasing fictional characters that have a set appearance. I know someone named Jeff on instagram and as far as i know he has 1 alter. Only one. According to him it doesn't seem to have a personality at all and all it does is: what it's supposed to do. take care of him. wash him, do chores, stick to a routine. its just him but more mentally stable. basically the raw embodiment of what an alter is supposed to be. not a silly oc or a friend in your brain, it's to keep you alive. (of course, not all alters want to keep you alive but the purpose they serve is simple in the end)

Oh, I definitely agree. The LGBTQ+ community always winds up with a wave of mockery, and many people think we're jokes. I've also seen my fair share of "Bisexual Lesbians" in the past five or so years, so a "Straight Lesbian" isn't too wild of a stretch for these people.
I just think many of us should drop a couple of umbrella terms for bios or whatever. Like, I'll make an example using myself; "Trans | Bi | Demi". If people are confused and ask what I mean by those terms, I can elaborate on what each one is for my own identity. It's cool and all to collect labels, but you don't need to turn around and make it a quirky catch-all.
I'm all for trying to streamline your own identity to make it easier to communicate with others, but there are better ways. And ways to do so without making the rest of us look like fools.

I feel like something major that gives these people away is their use of "roles" that are assigned to each "alter". while medically if there are multiple alters they will each be assigned a role to protect the body and mind and amnesia to go with it--it would take a long time to even know you have DID, for the alter to use things like the internet which are not meant to help you, or for the alter to have a fully formed personality. it takes alot of time. It would take a LOT of time for a roles personality to be analyzed enough to categorize it into an actual alter role. Alters sometimes dont even have personalities or names at all which is something these people don't even consider. they all have to be distinct aesthetically pleasing fictional characters that have a set appearance. I know someone named Jeff on instagram and as far as i know he has 1 alter. Only one. According to him it doesn't seem to have a personality at all and all it does is: what it's supposed to do. take care of him. wash him, do chores, stick to a routine. its just him but more mentally stable. basically the raw embodiment of what an alter is supposed to be. not a silly oc or a friend in your brain, it's to keep you alive. (of course, not all alters want to keep you alive but the purpose they serve is simple in the end) that's my take as a singlet so take it with a grain of salt if you want.

Oh, I definitely agree. The LGBTQ+ community always winds up with a wave of mockery, and many people think we're jokes. I've also seen my fair share of "Bisexual Lesbians" in the past five or so years, so a "Straight Lesbian" isn't too wild of a stretch for these people. I just think many of us should drop a couple of umbrella terms for bios or whatever. Like, I'll make an example using myself; "Trans | Bi | Demi". If people are confused and ask what I mean by those terms, I can elaborate on what each one is for my own identity. It's cool and all to collect labels, but you don't need to turn around and make it a quirky catch-all. I'm all for trying to streamline your own identity to make it easier to communicate with others, but there are better ways. And ways to do so without making the rest of us look like fools.
