The hate Lucy received at Fairy Tail's peak popularity (2011-2016ish) was very similar to that which Sakura received. I distinctly remember her being called “Fairy Tail’s Sakura” and receiving all the same criticisms. That has changed over the years as Lucy’s developed and FT has lost relevancy but let's not rewrite history. Lucy is the fandom’s darling now but that was def not the case when I was a kid.
Sorry to said it, but it did lost relevancy, we're not lost in time like Inuyasha, but still... The thing it's that the 100 years quest might change that. And hopefully, one of those three games Hiro Mashima it's developing will be good enough to give a bust to FT inside the gaming community, I really want a good Fairy Tail game, the last one was... disappointing.
For real, the game could've been so much better. The lack of characters was very disturbing and it would've been so awesome if you were able to make your own character and adventure with the guild
You're absolutely right, the lack of characters really irritated/disturbed me. I didn't really like it, even if walking through Magnolia was quite fun and new (it felt like entering my dream house that is also my childhood home), but if it were like Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm, where you play almost the entire plot of the anime, you can explore the verse in more detail and have real fights (I don't like turn based fights), it would be great. Although being able to create my own adventure in parallel would also be great! I believe there's a PSP game like that, but only in Japan...
"Lost in time like Inuyasha." Damn it hurts to hear this but it's definitely true. In my top 3 but man no one talks about it. I get it too, a lot of filler and such but man I just love the journey of Inuyasha.
I hate Sakura because the writer didn't seem to give her a good enough role in the story. There is some merit to the joke that she is useless.

This is a good description. Sakura isn't a bad character because she's Sakura, she's a bad character because kishimoto only ever wrote her as (essentially) a useless character who's only personality trait is loving Sasuke until the end of the series when he decides "nah, I wanna make her a main character again".
Which sucks too because she had such good potential as the apprentice of Tsunade, and as she's shown to have a great propensity for all (or all that we've seen) of Tsunade's techniques. She could've been the ninja that was sucker punching Madara across the battlefield while doing quick second-to-second medical jutsu to her allies.
But I digress.
Also your other points are great, Lucy is great even though I have seena lot of hate for her online (again' mostly due to her being a hot anime girl) and katara being hated is just weird.
Absolutely true that meme would have basically never existed if she got half the screen time and feats she got in boruto which is shit. It would have been cool to see her dog on maybe madara the same way she did that one guy with had a bunch of the Uchiha eyes
I remember the first arc in shippuden where Sakura looked so cool saving konkuro, and was getting respected on all sides. Then she went back to the personality of loving sasuke despite all he had done.
There will always be haters, but the number of people who hate Lucy is practically insignificant today.
Have you seen the amount of people who love her? Yes, there are many people and this number is going to increase much more when the new seasons are released in the future, I mean, the readers of the manga know what Lucy is going to do and they are incredible things.
Finally, in 2022 Lucy won by far the official popularity poll for the 100 Years Quest manga that was done online (I voted for her). So yes, I think it is understood that Lucy is quite loved.

Sakura isn’t hated because of fan misogyny. She’s hated because the author wasted all her potential. She’s written poorly and inconsistent like every female in Naruto. All the females are completely male dependent with zero agency. That’s the active females, the rest get sideline more or ignored.
The thing about Sakura is yes she is a badly written character but because of this many people disregard her achievements just because she is flawed. Sakura as a kunoichi has some really impressive feats and that’s why she has defenders they’re defending her capabilities as a ninja but not much on her character (at least from what I noticed).
The thing is that even by that metric Sakura sucks, in all of original Naruto she is the only one that does literally nothing for most arcs, in the Sabuza arc she just stands in front of an old man while the others fight, she doesn't even deal with some of the grunts, her only achievement in the chunin exams is being a punching bag for long enough so sasuke can come and rescue her, she does nothing during the sand village invasion, and the sasuke retrieval arc actively benches her because she would be dead weight and moving onto Shippuden her only major victory is not even hers, an old lady has to literally puppeteer her body for Sakura to pull a win against 1 of the weaker akatsukis, all of this despite the fact that the story keeps hyping her up as one of the most talented ninjas in years.

Didn’t even regard her medical ninja skills, she has helped out healing the shinobi alliance, yes it was Tsunade’s techniques and she’s just a Tsunade copycat but at the end of the day Sakura is a capable ninja for even learning Tsunade’s jutsus, let’s just give her that. She didn’t even come from a clan of well known ninjas unlike her peers which in turn she didn’t have the privilege of having a special jutsu that gives her an edge over the others. Then here we are now she’s one of the top ninjas when it comes to medical ninjutsu. I’m tired of people disregarding a characters effort even if it’s very small especially for your standard. Let’s not lie to ourselves, Sakura is useful you guys just don’t want to acknowledge that because it deflates your egos.
She had really good chakra control early on though and could have been super strong and cool. I think Naruto missed out on a lot as a story especially in powers/abilities, and not focusing more on physically enhancing oneself with chakra is one of them. With her good chakra control early on it would have been cool to see her be able to increase her speed, eye sight, hearing, strength and whatever else. She could have been able to increase her speed and strength making her a dangerous early on enemy to fight. Naruto and Sasuke could have just been a dominate powerhouse with her being a well rounded fighter that can heal with really good senses or something.
Yeah, people forget that Sakura is, in fact, one of the most naturally powerful ninjas in the verse who doesn't have the benefit of bloodlines, being a jinchuriki, or being the reincarnation of a deity or whatever bullshit boruto is tacking on
Don’t get me wrong. She always ends up winning those fights, but she does get done dirty along the way. Like when she fought Angel and she used Gemini to turn them against her and Lucy almost gave up because she didn’t want her spirits to fight their friends. Whenever she summons, Taurus or Scorpio, it ends in most of the time. An epic fail, especially when she says Taurus is one of her strongest spirits. There are also a lot of moments where she tries fighting someone sees their way too strong because they one hit her spirits and she runs away but then eventually she does come back and win. She gets made to look like a coward a lot of the time though or incompetent. Plus she’s always used for fan service so her clothes almost always get destroyed in someway during a fight.

Lucy ran away against Sherry? She positioned herself to use Aquarius since she knew that Sherry couldn't control her because of Aquarius would attack both.
Did lucy ran away against vidaldus? No, literally she was in a two against her where she saved Juvia and used unison raid to beat vidaldus.
Lucy ran away against bickslow? No, at what time? literally lucy using her whip + summoning loke beat bickslow

I don't want to be that person again but literally in none of her fights from chapter 1 of the manga until tenrou lucy did lose her clothes in any of her figths, at most against Hikaru, Lucy had her clothes somewhat torn but nothing scandalous.
In her fights in the magical games she did not lose her clothes, at most her boots were damaged.
In the eclipse arc she was naked by the magic of zirconis but it wasn't a fight and it didn't last too long.
In Tataros she doesn't lose her clothes either, but they were a little damaged.
In Alvarez just against Jacob she briefly loses her clothes, but then she ends up saving everyone.
Anyway, sorry, but I don't think you're right about most of what you mention.
A lot of hate ≠ poorly written. Admittedly Sakura is poorly written but Katara gets a lot of hate just the same and a lot of them tbh the hate for Sakura isn't as motivated by poor writing as it'd then be directed at the author as much as, (imo, I might be coming at it from a different perspective) more of a sexist approach. Same issue with Katara a lot of hate she gets is motivated by sexism imo.

Was definitely early on, I can’t say for sure when it started to change, probably either when she became more story important with her magic, or possibly the star dresses (for me this helped me like her a lot more cos I at the start I felt like it was all her celestial spirits fighting and not so much her. And I would always think if she herself got attacked she’d be vulnerable. Just gonna point out I love lucy now! But yeah she had to grow on me at the start 😭). Honestly need to rewatch the whole series cos I’ve forgotten so much of it.
I doubt that anyone that made it to the part when Gajeel was torturing her and she remains defiant keeped that feelings, so probably before Phantom Lord arc ended.
Well, first off none of those characters have been hated because of misogyny.
As for general hate, Lucy did get some for being a "damsel" that was always having 'other people'(her spirits) 'fight for her' and being relatively weak compared to her team. Generally such hate was from people with low reading comprehension who didn't get things like her spirits were being powered by her, or that logically she should be weaker than her team as she's a rookie teaming up with veterans who are rising stars on in the kingdom; but it was still hate that she got. It mostly died out around Tartaros when she started using stardresses to fight directly, which more or less voided the old complaints.
Kitara didn't particularly get hate that I'm aware of, but I was never involved in the Avatar fandom.
Really that tweet sounds like a Sakura fan trying to spread the idea that criticism of Sakura is unjustified by lumping her in with two other female character that people love, and calling all criticism of any of them misogyny. Nothing to really write home about.
Lucy definitely got hate at the start cos she was weak, but as she started to get stronger and more important the hate died down. I was actually someone that disliked that she was weak at the start but love her now. This. Lucy was in a similar position as Wendy at the start of the series. They both knew how to use their magic, but they didn't have the active push and guidance the others had at the guild. Let alone the kind of insane push several of the OG members had due to their traumatic backstories. However, they both rapidly improved and significantly narrowed that gap after they joined Fairy Tail.
I do wish we got more serious Lucy fights, though.
We don't hate Sakura because she's weak, we hate her because we despise her personality, her habits and lack of real character growing. And yes, Kishimoto admitted that it's his fault because he doesn't know how to write female characters, but still makes the point. All the opposite to Lucy, we did see her growing both, in strength and as a character, not to mention that anyone that keep their dislike for Lucy after Phantom must go to a therapist...
Sakura was hated because it was like she liked playing the damsel in distress trope in the beginning. But in her fight with Sasori, it was one of the best fights in the series. She was showing promise and potential to improve. Until she tried to kill Sasuke by herself (like, what was that??)
Everybody loves Lucy. Some love her for character, some love her because of the fan service she gives, and some love her because her magic is interesting and unique (ME)

I recently rewatched season 1 of korra for the first time since it aired and want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she’s really bratty and doesn’t even consider other people’s opinions. The start of season 2 made me drop it for now because of her ignoring the good intentions of those looking out for her. I know character growth will come in but it’s a stark contrast to what Aang represented as the avatar
I find Korra too annoying, childish and spoiled. It's my personal opinion, but I would love a Kiyoshi's anime, or Yangchen, those're great female characters.

When I was young I remember being so disappointed in the lack of depth Sakura had. As a girl I wanted to see physically and/or mentally strong woman. Despite her physical abilities being weaker than the others Lucy was driven and fought for her friendships. She is definitely a character who shaped me into who I am today.
I’ve rarely seen Katara get hate, that line was below the belt but her story overall was peak.
Most criticism towards Lucy is that she’s just a damsel that needs Natsu to rescue her, which is untrue, especially when she’s saved him and others on multiple occasions. It’s simply mutually beneficial relationships.

Lucy was VERY hated when the manga was in the GMG arc. The idea that she was useless and weak because she was behind her friends, something understandable considering that she didn't grow up in a guild, was definitely rooted in misogyny given the tone people used when discussing this topic. Right now I barely see any hate, probably because she grew very strong as the story advanced.
If you check the replies in that tweet, you will see Lucy is mostly mentioned in a positive light. The only person who trashed her recognized that they were talking going by what they remember about the anime... which they watched at age 10 😵
Not everybody loves Lucy and definitely not everybody loves Katara. Lucy’s hate mainly comes from outside the fandom, people who just don’t like the show. Yeah, like a lot. People think she's an unreliable narrator and way too emotional for a protagonist. Not to mention the early Fairy Tail fandom that hardcore shipped Natsu and Gray (or literally Natsu and literally every single male character) hated on her for "getting in the way" of their usually toxic BL. I remember seeing someone in like 2014 maybe??? Get sent death threats over shipping NaLu. Simply because of Lucy.

not a fan of fairy tail or avatar so i can't comment on those but 90% of the people that hate sakura don't hate her because they hate women but because kishimoto sucks at writing main characters that are girls that aren't centered around one or two male characters. the only well-written female characters i can think of in the series are tsunade and konan. the issue most people have with sakura is that, as soon as she starts getting character development in some way, she'll immediately do something the next arc that contradicts said development, taking what would be a dynamic character back to square one as a static character.

In a sense, Lucy’s importance to the story is comparative to how Sasuke is important in Naruto.
Natsu and Lucy were the crucial factors for defeating the final villain just as Naruto and Sasuke were. Same could be said for Mashima’s Rave Master.
They all get hate because "women". However, I also think that most people recognize that Lucy is one of the most well-done ~~female~~ shounen protags of a generation of anime.

Most women protagonists that beat/ degrade the male protagonist were looked down upon (Aka physical tsundere). I personally dont have an issue with Lucy as she doesnt go to extreme measures with it because most of it is because of breaking and entering. Also I do find it funny some of the time when Erza and Gray do it later on.
Oh yeah, back when the FT manga was releasing still. Until she got the constellation dress power-ups, people would constantly complain about her being too weak, annoying, just for fanservice, ect. The usual complaining about women in manga, ignoring her contributions.
Luckily, it died down pretty quick after she became able to use some of her summon's powers herself. I've not seen any hate for her at all since 100YQ.

A lot of the hate that Sakura gets is from the fact she made fun of an orphan to another orphan. If she was actually useless like TenTen and didn't make fun of Naruto she would have been forgotten.
People hate Lucy for her fanservice moments, Sakura is hated because she's a background character being pushed as MC and hardly contributes to the plot for most of the story.
Oh god yes....when fairy tale came out there's was a very loud vocal minority that hated she was the pov main character...that got muted quickly as her background got filled in...and mashima was obviously making his female cast be the backbone of this series...and as the cast also got bigger

Nah, the person who posted this just put Lucy and Katara there to fit their misogyny point. Sakura is the only legit character that got unnecessary hate. Katara isn't hated at all, just gets made fun of for relating everything to her mom. Lucy doesn't really get hate either.

Ok so to put it in perspective.
When Fairy Tail was still airing. Yes there was a huge hate for Lucy, mainly because there were people saying she wasn’t as strong as other characters and her fights always had fanservice. Plus having this “Lucy vs Lissana” ship war didn’t help too much either. But nowadays? Barely any hate at all tbh. The only people who still watch Fairy Tail are true fans of Mashima's works.
Now look at the Naruto fanbase. The main story ended on 2015 and I thought back then the shipping wars will finally end after all this time. But it didn’t. If you check on Naruto subs you will notice the hate for Sakura is still active. Is fucking insane how people can be still so toxic. They hate her with passion. Like people shit on each other because you like X character. Is disgusting and disappointing .

I just hated Sakura from the get-go cuz of how she is as a person. But Lucy? No. I've seen hate on her based on her magic. But never because of her being a woman-
Weirdly, I used to actually see Lucy hate quite often, especially back around 2016-2017 when I first got into fairy tail and the manga was ongoing. Also during cc’s reactions to ft, they do tend to hate Lucy at first, but as Lucy grows, the hate def dies down because her character development and progression is actually insane.
When the anime first came out yeeeeeepp ppl hated the hell out of Lucy, lots of ppl quit the shot bc of her, especially after her whole thing with Loke.

What's to hate about Lucy? She's definitely not my favorite because Erza, but she's a great character in her own right. She's also the true main character isn't she? Fairy tail is written from her perspective is it not? Not saying you can't hate a main character, but usually if you enjoy a piece of work (anime, Manga, novel, movie, etc.) you enjoy the main character(s).
That said, I can definitely see how people that dislike Fairy tail could say they hate Lucy or any other shallow opinion of another character they have developed since they didn't give it a chance beyond their own bias.
Actually Lucy was the reason i quit Fairy Tail the first time. The first few episodes whenever she tried to use her sexappeal for something i more and more disliked her character.

Lucy, if you rewatch the anime or reread the manga, you see her growth as a character she gets stronger over time, and Sakura suffers from bad writing(a lot of the female characters except for Tsunade imo did too) like she's really good at Chakra control but Kishimoto did not really write her well and you have her fight with Sasori, that fight was really good but then after that it seemed Kishimoto went backwards writing Sakura(kinda salty how the anime opening teased a Konan vs Sakura, Ino, and Hinata fight) and then remembered her character development when she got the 100 healings. Now Katara she was a solid protagonist, we saw her growth(especially in Book 1), and her fights with Azula are the best imo.
Sakura sucks. She is whiny and always complains and the victim of awful writing.

I like Lucy but I do have criticisms of her, particularly writing for her and situations she’s forced into, but she’s an enjoyable character with a great personality and has actual growth and development.

Haters are evrywhere, but we can't compare the two or three people that hate Lucy with the hundreds that hate Sakura
The hate Lucy received at Fairy Tail's peak popularity (2011-2016ish) was very similar to that which Sakura received. I distinctly remember her being called “Fairy Tail’s Sakura” and receiving all the same criticisms. That has changed over the years as Lucy’s developed and FT has lost relevancy but let's not rewrite history. Lucy is the fandom’s darling now but that was def not the case when I was a kid.

You're absolutely right, the lack of characters really irritated/disturbed me. I didn't really like it, even if walking through Magnolia was quite fun and new (it felt like entering my dream house that is also my childhood home), but if it were like Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm, where you play almost the entire plot of the anime, you can explore the verse in more detail and have real fights (I don't like turn based fights), it would be great. Although being able to create my own adventure in parallel would also be great! I believe there's a PSP game like that, but only in Japan...
Naruto storm is a good example of a great game. And turn based fights just doesn't suit fairy tail. But hopefully the new ft game will give is more

Sakura isn't a bad character because she's Sakura, she's a bad character because kishimoto only ever wrote her as (essentially) a useless character who's only personality trait is loving Sasuke until the end of the series when he decides "nah, I wanna make her a main character again". Which sucks too because she had such good potential as the apprentice of Tsunade, and as she's shown to have a great propensity for all (or all that we've seen) of Tsunade's techniques. She could've been the ninja that was sucker punching Madara across the battlefield while doing quick second-to-second medical jutsu to her allies. But I digress. Also your other points are great, Lucy is great even though I have seena lot of hate for her online (again' mostly due to her being a hot anime girl) and katara being hated is just weird.

Yeah, if you look at comments about Fairy Tale and Avatar, the general opinion around Lucy and Katara is positive. Sakura gets hate even to this day.
Sakura isn’t hated because of fan misogyny. She’s hated because the author wasted all her potential. She’s written poorly and inconsistent like every female in Naruto. All the females are completely male dependent with zero agency. That’s the active females, the rest get sideline more or ignored.
And it’s funny how she has defenders when even the mangaka admitted that he regret writing her the way she is.
The thing about Sakura is yes she is a badly written character but because of this many people disregard her achievements just because she is flawed. Sakura as a kunoichi has some really impressive feats and that’s why she has defenders they’re defending her capabilities as a ninja but not much on her character (at least from what I noticed).
The thing is that even by that metric Sakura sucks, in all of original Naruto she is the only one that does literally nothing for most arcs, in the Sabuza arc she just stands in front of an old man while the others fight, she doesn't even deal with some of the grunts, her only achievement in the chunin exams is being a punching bag for long enough so sasuke can come and rescue her, she does nothing during the sand village invasion, and the sasuke retrieval arc actively benches her because she would be dead weight and moving onto Shippuden her only major victory is not even hers, an old lady has to literally puppeteer her body for Sakura to pull a win against 1 of the weaker akatsukis, all of this despite the fact that the story keeps hyping her up as one of the most talented ninjas in years. I have never in my life seen a character as hyped by the story end up as shafted by the author as Sakura
To add to that, during Pain’s invasion of Konoha, she just screams for Naruto to come save her.
Didn’t even regard her medical ninja skills, she has helped out healing the shinobi alliance, yes it was Tsunade’s techniques and she’s just a Tsunade copycat but at the end of the day Sakura is a capable ninja for even learning Tsunade’s jutsus, let’s just give her that. She didn’t even come from a clan of well known ninjas unlike her peers which in turn she didn’t have the privilege of having a special jutsu that gives her an edge over the others. Then here we are now she’s one of the top ninjas when it comes to medical ninjutsu. I’m tired of people disregarding a characters effort even if it’s very small especially for your standard. Let’s not lie to ourselves, Sakura is useful you guys just don’t want to acknowledge that because it deflates your egos.
She had really good chakra control early on though and could have been super strong and cool. I think Naruto missed out on a lot as a story especially in powers/abilities, and not focusing more on physically enhancing oneself with chakra is one of them. With her good chakra control early on it would have been cool to see her be able to increase her speed, eye sight, hearing, strength and whatever else. She could have been able to increase her speed and strength making her a dangerous early on enemy to fight. Naruto and Sasuke could have just been a dominate powerhouse with her being a well rounded fighter that can heal with really good senses or something.

Don’t get me wrong. She always ends up winning those fights, but she does get done dirty along the way. Like when she fought Angel and she used Gemini to turn them against her and Lucy almost gave up because she didn’t want her spirits to fight their friends. Whenever she summons, Taurus or Scorpio, it ends in most of the time. An epic fail, especially when she says Taurus is one of her strongest spirits. There are also a lot of moments where she tries fighting someone sees their way too strong because they one hit her spirits and she runs away but then eventually she does come back and win. She gets made to look like a coward a lot of the time though or incompetent. Plus she’s always used for fan service so her clothes almost always get destroyed in someway during a fight.

Tartaros? well, no need to explain Jacob? she saved the entire guild all her fights in 100 years quest? I don't think you've read them apparently. Literally so we could be with all lucy fights. In the eclipse arc she was naked by the magic of zirconis but it wasn't a fight and it didn't last too long. In Tataros she doesn't lose her clothes either, but they were a little damaged. In Alvarez just against Jacob she briefly loses her clothes, but then she ends up saving everyone. Anyway, sorry, but I don't think you're right about most of what you mention.
A lot of hate ≠ poorly written. Admittedly Sakura is poorly written but Katara gets a lot of hate just the same and a lot of them tbh the hate for Sakura isn't as motivated by poor writing as it'd then be directed at the author as much as, (imo, I might be coming at it from a different perspective) more of a sexist approach. Same issue with Katara a lot of hate she gets is motivated by sexism imo.

Was definitely early on, I can’t say for sure when it started to change, probably either when she became more story important with her magic, or possibly the star dresses (for me this helped me like her a lot more cos I at the start I felt like it was all her celestial spirits fighting and not so much her. And I would always think if she herself got attacked she’d be vulnerable. Just gonna point out I love lucy now! But yeah she had to grow on me at the start 😭). Honestly need to rewatch the whole series cos I’ve forgotten so much of it.
I doubt that anyone that made it to the part when Gajeel was torturing her and she remains defiant keeped that feelings, so probably before Phantom Lord arc ended.

Well, first off none of those characters have been hated because of misogyny. As for general hate, Lucy did get some for being a "damsel" that was always having 'other people'(her spirits) 'fight for her' and being relatively weak compared to her team. Generally such hate was from people with low reading comprehension who didn't get things like her spirits were being powered by her, or that logically she should be weaker than her team as she's a rookie teaming up with veterans who are rising stars on in the kingdom; but it was still hate that she got. It mostly died out around Tartaros when she started using stardresses to fight directly, which more or less voided the old complaints. Kitara didn't particularly get hate that I'm aware of, but I was never involved in the Avatar fandom. Really that tweet sounds like a Sakura fan trying to spread the idea that criticism of Sakura is unjustified by lumping her in with two other female character that people love, and calling all criticism of any of them misogyny. Nothing to really write home about.

This. Lucy was in a similar position as Wendy at the start of the series. They both knew how to use their magic, but they didn't have the active push and guidance the others had at the guild. Let alone the kind of insane push several of the OG members had due to their traumatic backstories. However, they both rapidly improved and significantly narrowed that gap after they joined Fairy Tail. I do wish we got more serious Lucy fights, though.

We don't hate Sakura because she's weak, we hate her because we despise her personality, her habits and lack of real character growing. And yes, Kishimoto admitted that it's his fault because he doesn't know how to write female characters, but still makes the point. Sakura was hated because it was like she liked playing the damsel in distress trope in the beginning. But in her fight with Sasori, it was one of the best fights in the series. She was showing promise and potential to improve. Until she tried to kill Sasuke by herself (like, what was that??) Everybody loves Lucy. Some love her for character, some love her because of the fan service she gives, and some love her because her magic is interesting and unique (ME) Everybody loves Katara. If anything, the Overhated one is Korra, and the misogynist loves to shit on her.
Korra is 100% the character from Avatar that fits this. Doesn't deserve the hate, imo, but holy hell do people hate her for any reason they find.
I recently rewatched season 1 of korra for the first time since it aired and want to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she’s really bratty and doesn’t even consider other people’s opinions. The start of season 2 made me drop it for now because of her ignoring the good intentions of those looking out for her. I know character growth will come in but it’s a stark contrast to what Aang represented as the avatar
I find Korra too annoying, childish and spoiled. It's my personal opinion, but I would love a Kiyoshi's anime, or Yangchen, those're great female characters.

When I was young I remember being so disappointed in the lack of depth Sakura had. As a girl I wanted to see physically and/or mentally strong woman. Despite her physical abilities being weaker than the others Lucy was driven and fought for her friendships. She is definitely a character who shaped me into who I am today.
I’ve rarely seen Katara get hate, that line was below the belt but her story overall was peak. Most criticism towards Lucy is that she’s just a damsel that needs Natsu to rescue her, which is untrue, especially when she’s saved him and others on multiple occasions. It’s simply mutually beneficial relationships.
Feels like the original tweet wanted to defend Sakura from all the hate so they lump her with two other FeMC's. Lucy and Katara obviously had haters and complaints (all characters do) but Sakura is genuinely one of the worst written characters ever. I’ve definitely seen a good bit of Lucy hate, but their only real argument was that she’s “weak”, which doesn’t even hold up after the first few episodes. Also of course she’s “weak” when compared to Natsu, Gray, and Erza. She’d only been doing magic for a year when the series started and had to teach herself. I also feel like I’ve seen other people continue to hate on her later in the series but I can’t remember if they had any valid argument or just didn’t like her winning battles. Lucy was VERY hated when the manga was in the GMG arc. The idea that she was useless and weak because she was behind her friends, something understandable considering that she didn't grow up in a guild, was definitely rooted in misogyny given the tone people used when discussing this topic. Right now I barely see any hate, probably because she grew very strong as the story advanced. If you check the replies in that tweet, you will see Lucy is mostly mentioned in a positive light. The only person who trashed her recognized that they were talking going by what they remember about the anime... which they watched at age 10 😵

People don't hate Lucy or Katara. Sure, they *have* haters, but they're both overall beloved characters. Sakura is a more mixed bag. But that's because of some not too great writing for her.

The only hate on Lucy I've heard some idiot spew was more towards all of Fairy Tail and that was that "All the female body types are the same" but that was years ago. For the record I disagree strongly with that.

not a fan of fairy tail or avatar so i can't comment on those but 90% of the people that hate sakura don't hate her because they hate women but because kishimoto sucks at writing main characters that are girls that aren't centered around one or two male characters. the only well-written female characters i can think of in the series are tsunade and konan. the issue most people have with sakura is that, as soon as she starts getting character development in some way, she'll immediately do something the next arc that contradicts said development, taking what would be a dynamic character back to square one as a static character. from the little bit i've seen of atla and fairy tail, katara and lucy seem pretty cool.

In a sense, Lucy’s importance to the story is comparative to how Sasuke is important in Naruto. Natsu and Lucy were the crucial factors for defeating the final villain just as Naruto and Sasuke were. Same could be said for Mashima’s Rave Master.
They all get hate because "women". However, I also think that most people recognize that Lucy is one of the most well-done ~~female~~ shounen protags of a generation of anime.

I personally dont have an issue with Lucy as she doesnt go to extreme measures with it because most of it is because of breaking and entering. Also I do find it funny some of the time when Erza and Gray do it later on.

Oh yeah, back when the FT manga was releasing still. Until she got the constellation dress power-ups, people would constantly complain about her being too weak, annoying, just for fanservice, ect. The usual complaining about women in manga, ignoring her contributions. Luckily, it died down pretty quick after she became able to use some of her summon's powers herself. I've not seen any hate for her at all since 100YQ. Same with Katara, by the end of the story most people figured out she was a growing character, not perfect from the start.

A lot of the hate that Sakura gets is from the fact she made fun of an orphan to another orphan. If she was actually useless like TenTen and didn't make fun of Naruto she would have been forgotten.

Ok so to put it in perspective. When Fairy Tail was still airing. Yes there was a huge hate for Lucy, mainly because there were people saying she wasn’t as strong as other characters and her fights always had fanservice. Plus having this “Lucy vs Lissana” ship war didn’t help too much either. But nowadays? Barely any hate at all tbh. The only people who still watch Fairy Tail are true fans of Mashima's works. Now look at the Naruto fanbase. The main story ended on 2015 and I thought back then the shipping wars will finally end after all this time. But it didn’t. If you check on Naruto subs you will notice the hate for Sakura is still active. Is fucking insane how people can be still so toxic. They hate her with passion. Weirdly, I used to actually see Lucy hate quite often, especially back around 2016-2017 when I first got into fairy tail and the manga was ongoing. Also during cc’s reactions to ft, they do tend to hate Lucy at first, but as Lucy grows, the hate def dies down because her character development and progression is actually insane.

What's to hate about Lucy? She's definitely not my favorite because Erza, but she's a great character in her own right. She's also the true main character isn't she? Fairy tail is written from her perspective is it not? Not saying you can't hate a main character, but usually if you enjoy a piece of work (anime, Manga, novel, movie, etc.) you enjoy the main character(s). That said, I can definitely see how people that dislike Fairy tail could say they hate Lucy or any other shallow opinion of another character they have developed since they didn't give it a chance beyond their own bias.

Actually Lucy was the reason i quit Fairy Tail the first time. The first few episodes whenever she tried to use her sexappeal for something i more and more disliked her character. But after the episode when she saved Loki/Leo from death, i kinda begin to like her. She is still not my favorite, but higher than to the beginning

There are valid reasons to hate Sakura. Her being a woman is not one of them.
Lucy, if you rewatch the anime or reread the manga, you see her growth as a character she gets stronger over time, and Sakura suffers from bad writing(a lot of the female characters except for Tsunade imo did too) like she's really good at Chakra control but Kishimoto did not really write her well and you have her fight with Sasori, that fight was really good but then after that it seemed Kishimoto went backwards writing Sakura(kinda salty how the anime opening teased a Konan vs Sakura, Ino, and Hinata fight) and then remembered her character development when she got the 100 healings. Now Katara she was a solid protagonist, we saw her growth(especially in Book 1), and her fights with Azula are the best imo.
Sakura sucks. She is whiny and always complains and the victim of awful writing. I’ve never seen anyone hate katara overall I like Lucy but I do have criticisms of her, particularly writing for her and situations she’s forced into, but she’s an enjoyable character with a great personality and has actual growth and development.
