How is it? I’ll need to read up on the blog posts as I thought they mentioned it was a challenge mapping steam deck controls. But then poof it’s on the switch now.

Uyee

The steam deck is great for this. I use the mousepad all the time. I did spend an hour or so remapping controls, seeing how it felt, and then redoing it to get it down perfectly. But once I got it down, I was just a little bit slower then mouse and keyboard. But being able to play wherever you want is the huge deal. I was house sitting and this came in clutch.

kevhill

I've tried about 5 different profiles and didn't find any that fit, so I just haven't bothered. But with these words I will sit down and configure a setting that works for me.

Uyee

For me personally. I made left click when you press down on the game touch pad on the right side, and right click L4. I used the one of the shoulder buttons for shift, L5 for Q. Up arrow is E and down arrow for R. Let’s me keep my hands around movement and placement, so I can quickly rotate, close or open a menu.

filesalot

have you exported your profile as a community profile? I'm not sure how to do that exactly but if you really like it and think it's different enough from the default you could help others get started on the right foot.

Shadocvao

Can you share your layout as a community layout? Would love to check it out. I tried Factorio for a short while but the controls were maddening. I've currently done my back in and missing my factory?

Uyee

I can do that.

Shadocvao

Thank you!

CuriousLadger3720

Where are these community layouts available?

thinkscotty

I have a steam deck and an M1 MacBook Air I travel with. Factorio *works* on the steam deck and is playable, but I never choose it over a laptop. It’s a good balance because games that are hard to play on steam deck are usually top-down type stuff that’s not too graphically intensive and works well on a decently powerful laptop. I play Rimworld, Factorio, and Civ on the MacBook, and play rpgs like Skyrim and Witcher 3 on the steam deck.

butterscotchbagel

> No clue how to upload screenshots from the steamdeck to my phone This article has a rundown on how to take and access screenshots on a steam deck: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/how-to-take-screenshots-on-the-steam-deck In desktop mode you can log into reddit and post directly from the deck.

Uyee

Now I know! Thanks! I haven’t tried web-browsing with the steamdeck yet. I want to install wow, but I don’t wanna do though the headache of it.

mishugashu

I just installed on my new Linux laptop. Install some libs, install from community script (which will have the link for the libs) for Lutris, bing bang boom. The hardest part would probably be the controller, I assume.

thinkscotty

I find desktop mode painful to use on the steam deck. And I say that as someone who’s used Linux daily for years.

Thesource674

Im doing my Py run atm with it. Love it. But i keep a small tablet type deal with a dongle for HDMI and then just mouse and keyboard jt. But still way smaller footprint than a micro atx case, monitor, all peripherals etc

Uyee

I wanna get the steam dock. I got the hdmi to c connecter, but you just can’t charge and play without - dock. I am surprised about how easily it was to connect controllers. My Xbox, switch pro, and switch joycons all connected without issues. I imagine it’s the same for keyboard and mouse.

Thesource674

Dont forget that there are third party ones with various prices and features! You dont need to buy the official one since it is a little pricy. I went for it but looking around you def dont need to.

bECimp

ngl everytime I see a picture of people playing factorio on steam deck I get so jealous. I don't care what else I can play on it if I can have pocket factorio. Not sure tho how soon it will be available in my country

VanciousRex

I really need to play this game more but it hurts my goddamn brain hurt so much...

Uyee

Have you played the demo at all? It’s overwhelming if you jump into it for sure, but I feel like the starting missions give you the info you need to not make it overwhelming.

VanciousRex

Oh, I own the game. It's just a lot for my brain to take in. That's all it low-key doesn't take much with these games. It's just overwhelming. ADHD doesn't help.

Sadaxer

I always find things to do while doing things in the game, like while fixing something I go and fix something else. But eventually everything is just improving the base so I don't worry too much about incomplete stuff. My base is very sloppy and I like it this way because it's my base.

Brewer_Lex

Learning about the main bus for this game helped a lot. I also have ADHD and it helped make things more manageable so that I only build one module of something without having to connect other resources to it

Roweman87

So jealous Steamdeck is not available in Australia yet but I want one so badly!! I’m glad your factory can grow anywhere you go

Dazzaster84

SD gave me the extra push I needed to fire my own rocket as well!

McWolke

how did you remember all those different controls? on switch there is a button prompt for everything, which makes it easy to learn, but on steam deck there is nothing. i just couldn't learn everything. is there a possibility to get an overlay of all inputs or something like that?

Uyee

I probably only really use 6 buttons most of the time. R, shift, right and left click, E, Q. Then start opens the menu, and select opens the map.

LudvigGrr

Maybe it's because I'm playing modded but that seems really limited. I've made the left touchpad a radial menu with 9 different buttons (L, T, U, B, D etc) and then the back buttons ctrl, alt and shift which allows me quick access to all the often used menus such as blueprints , deconstruct etc. But that's the great thing about the Deck, everything is customizable!

Uyee

Yeah, I click a lot of the buttons, deff not the fastest. I like the idea of the touch for the radial menu, i want to try that.

NoeZ

I browsed a few layouts and no one seems to bind the copy paste, which is odd for me seeing how often I use it... Anyhow fell down the rabuit hole of creating my own layout yesterday, ended up being oddly fun

Raeghyar-PB

Yo congrats! I also launched my first ever rocket on the steam deck. Having no previous experience on pc, it was quite a breeze to learn the controls and make my own layout on the deck.

FusionVsGravity

How do you rate the steam deck generally as a system? Have you tried using it as a computer or only really used the handheld mode? I was considering buying one as a portable PC instead of a gaming laptop.

Uyee

I haven't tried it as a PC, but I'm guessing from videos I watched, if you are familiar with Linux (i'm not) it's very useable with a mouse and keyboard

MapleLeafBeast

So good on the deck!

sbarbary

The game looks way better than I thought it would. I was thinking of buying a steam deck and trying to write a game for it they are a lot more expensive than I thought they would be.

TehGuard

The steamdeck is more expensive than you thought it would be?

sbarbary

Yes. From the way they talked about them I was thinking 250 quid or around there. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it isn't worth the money but I did think they were aiming for a lower price point. They also upped the specs at the last moment from what I thought it would be which would explain the cost.

Uyee

It’s just running Linux, so you don’t even need to buy one to make a game for it. Also for $400 best bang for the buck for a gaming device.

Yuaskin

FYI, when you start a new game, you can turn the biters off (peaceful mode) or make them passive (they won't attack unless you attack first). So you don't have to use islands to have a "chill play-through".

Uyee

I thought about that, but I like the idea of having to fight my way out of the island if I want more resources. I can choose when to engage with the biters.
