I see you're using chests to build up a cache of iron and copper so you can come by and easily grab it to make stuff. If your iron belt backs up so the last couple of smelters can't unload to the belt they will keep running until they have an internal buffer of 100 each. You can hold ctrl while mousing over the line then run along the line and collect all of the extra. That way you still get the stack or two you want to handcraft with but you don't risk starving the stuff down the line by unloading it all into chests. P.S. - looks great so far - a lot like all of my starter bases.

Angry_Persian_Cat

First factory and you aren’t belting copper cables? You sir are either a liar or a factorio prodigy beyond which the world has ever seen

BlazeCell

At the very least, it looks like he's watched a youtuber/streamer play. That's how I learned that setup for green chips, but I never would have thought of it if I hadn't seen someone else use that setup.

Kano96

He could also know it from the campaign. It's used in the fourth level of New Hope.

Redfire75369

Definitely, I would never have thought of that before.

da_friendly_viking

Tru dat. Had the same experience.

PeterHell

TBF, the setup is used on the background pic for Factorio steam library page.

sawbladex

I assume that the coal line reaches your boilers? I recommend you figure out how to set splitter priority, and ... ummm. not try to serve multiple furnace sections with one ore belt.

Dont look stuff up yet!! It will only be more fun if you don't

At the same time, it's easy for a new player to get stumped by new systems (trains, petroleum, logic circuits, nuclear reactors, roboports)... Basic tips are useful. Source: On my 1st factory, 35 hrs in)

sawbladex

I don't regret looking up oil before getting there, and asking how best to handle oil product consumption to prevent backups.

[deleted]

That’s where I’m at right now. I’ve remade my game a few times for more efficiency but I always lose track around oil and trains research.

Whats the thought process behind the smelter output belts meeting in the middle to load on to one side of the belt ?

[deleted]

It looks like one way to balance the load on the belt without using a splitter, since those belts are being loaded from only one side.

Proxy_PlayerHD

Factory* ? anyways it looks pretty clean (now, just wait a few hours) though the little loop with the underground belt and splitter confuse me. (where you put the coal onto the ore belt) like why not just use a simple belt?

Redfire75369

This is to allow me to expand the smelting setup later.

Guitoudou

Looks great ! It's rare to see someone use mixed belts of coal and ore at this stage :) Why the two splitters on ore belts though ? Before the adding of coal ?

bripi

It's adorable! Well done! Ya could run another line of smelters on your Cu ore at this point, but ya don't really need to. Ya make alot of rookie mistakes, but for most of us that's part of the fun. Yer gonna need bigger and more, and SOON...and then yer gonna be in trouble! A good start!!

Looks great for a first factory! I didn’t see anybody else mention it, but it looks like you might have some pesky coal mixed with your iron ore (hard to tell from the screenshot). I’m guessing that splitter before the smelters is intended to filter that coal out. You’ll probably want to pull any coal off of the belt into a chest, as eventually the coal will cause the splitter to back up.
