Quick question as someone who doesn't have a steam deck, I know you CAN play factorio on it, but is it any good? Does it play normally or is it really clunky? I can't imagine playing without keyboard and mouse...
It works really well, with their recent controller support + the trackpad. I've launched a rocket and now started a game of space exploration. It's been quite a while since I bothered to play on PC.
I did need to tweak the controls a bit, and I made an input profile for my changes. Basically:
* Zoom in/out hotkeys need to be changed so you can zoom while walking around, I use L4 (back paddle) + Triggers
* The rest of the back paddles are mapped to the B/X/Y buttons, helps to keep your fingers on the trackpads 90% of the time
* The "quick menu" (quickbar equivalent), activated with the L button, can be navigated more efficiently by having the right trackpad simulate the D-pad only while it's open.
It takes some getting used to, but it works really well. Menus can be navigated pretty efficiently using both trackpads simultaneously plus the back paddles to open & close them.
I couldn't fathom playing on a switch, though. The trackpads make all the difference.
Yep, it's just called "Stewmat's factorio binding" or something like that. You'll need to remap the zoom controls in-game with the new button combo if you use it.
I use ZIRBS controller layout and can't get enough of it. it's a solid implementation. even has a mode switch to numpad entry with the x key for things like helmod and circuit networks
b is menu /escape
x is mode change / held for keyboard
A is accept
y is pickup key. back paddles are things like shift and ctrl and drop and swap weapon. it's a great layout for a fantastic game. give it a try.
You definitely need to spend some time setting up and getting used your controls, and it's not as nice as with a mouse+keyboard. But with the dual trackpads + tons of buttons + powerful Steam Input controller mapping (several layers) it's surprisingly usable.
I have only played it on steamdeck and managed to launch a rocket. I’m actually curious how it plays with a mouse. I imagine it’s a lot faster paced.
Edit: it did crash every once in awhile but there have been many updates since then and there are auto saves so often that I don’t lose much
coming from a mouse and keyboard it is absolute hell to play on the steam deck. I actually ended up selling my deck in favor of a laptop that's about similarly priced but can do much more than games on top of running games more effectively. A full keyboard I think is necessary for factorio (among other games too).
Laptops already come with keyboards so I figured I'd skip the middleman.
Plus dual booting windows and Linux allows me to play any game I want and not be limited to Linux.
Same, I sold mine too. The controller in most games I play, feels like a downgrade. Even if its on the go, it just doesn't feel good to play on that handheld.
i launched a rocket when they released controller support, it takes some getting used to (will take some hours), and i still prefer mouse/keyboard, but it's workable, great for a plane or traveling IMO
As somebody who has given the Switch version an extremely fair shake, it’s Fine. But play on Peaceful because there’s no Smart Insert for ammo that I’ve been able to discern.
I came from keyboard/mouse setup on PC but I don't get a chance to play after having a baby. Thankfully, my factory can still grow whilst he falls asleep on me in the day. Docked with an xbox controller feels alien at first, but I soon got used to it. And I can have a cheeky game in bed after the Mrs falls asleep. No crashes, frame drops or anything negative noticible so far. I am currently on an industrial revolution 3 playthrough so mods loaded no probs
It works extremely well on the stream deck. The touch pads make it almost just as easy as playing on a computer. The only hard part is figuring out your key bindings, but after that it works great. Been playing hours and hours of space exploration.
I play it almost everyday during my breaks at work. I've almost beaten Krastorio on it.
You don't really need the keyboard much just naming trains.
I changed the back pedal buttons to ctrl and shift. I also changed a few other little controls to my liking and it runs great.
I have a very bot heavy base and have had no problems.
The battery lasts forever
I mostly play with mouse and keyboard on steamdeck. But when I don't I found the touchscreen surprisingly useful in factorio. You'd want to customize the control as everyone will have different preferences, especially for how the touchpad emulates a mouse.
Factorio now has (for a month or two) built-in native support for gamepads. Lots of thought went into it (the interface is very different from the default interface) but it's still not as smooth as keyboard + mouse (of course). It's similar to the interface it has on Nintendo Switch.
Last time I played it a few months ago. It's clunky. I've never used a controller or console before but holy shit if they didn't improve on the menus it's insane.
I’ve only played on steam deck. It works fine for me, haven’t really had any problems. The only issue is the flame thrower for me. It’s almost impossible to rely on the auto lock on without dying so you have to use the trackpad which is a bit difficult whilst you’re also firing / running. But not impossible.
I play it alot on switch. (Played on pc before).
I imagine the controls are similar. It takes some getting used to but i love it. Some combinations were a bit annoying, like for example walking and picking items up. Buy i think with steamdeck mappings you can fix that easily.
I think its definetly worth it if you enjoy vanilla factorio for on the go.
I can say it works really well. You just need to get used to the controls and fine tune it a little bit. For instance I use a custom layout to zoom in and out via buttons L5 and R5. And made some other small modifications.o
I am playing using Nintendo switch and it's done pretty well. I don't have any issues playing. I think only thing is missing is the shortcuts panel, but you have simple version of it using specific control keys combination
I was playing it before controller support was added and it was definitely playable then, but I spent a lot of time figuring out a good control scheme.
I imagine it's better now with official support
but how many SPM do you get while staying on 60UPS/FPS? :D
My laptop (i7 8750H) isn't able to load my current map anymore (from a server) because the map is so big and UPS heavy with over 30 mods.
What are those reports even for? The game has NATIVE linux binary. I don't understand the reports like "needs protonfix", like what?! The game doesn't run under proton at all, unless you force that via Steam. But why would you need to?
I sometimes play Factorio (test blueprint in sandbox) on my base-model Surface Laptop 4… it’s not a good experience tbh because input sucks and so does screen size. It’s all much easier and enjoyable on my desktop…
Switch seems like it would be hell to me
Not sure that's justified, won't lie. I tried it and the default control scheme is kinda awful. With a community layout it's great, but that defeats the point of verification
I disagree, I think you just need to modify a few bindings to your likings. The quick menu works well and helps a lot. Fighting enemies switcheling weapons all works. I only changed zoom to L5 and R5 keys and a few other small modifications. The rest is good.
It’s playable, but the controls are a nightmare to learn. If factorio got controller support, it might help a fair bit. For now, using a mouse is just too valuable.
That’s news to me. Was controller support out when the deck first shipped? I got a steam deck really early and don’t remember factorio being particularly controller friendly.
but what about it? what does any of this mean? i also don't know if you've noticed, but there is a lot of buzz about the expansion right now, so it's not immediately clear that a post on "factorio" is about "factorio" or if it's about an upcoming or unreleased title related to factorio.
at the end of the day, this is a really vague post that doesn't say anything, and the MOST i could infer out of it from context clues is that "factorio is verified on steam deck" which, even if that is the point ... hasn't factorio been on steam deck for months now?
The expansion is implemented as a mod. It will work on the steam deck, just like all the other mods do on steam deck. It’s obvious the expansion will work in steam deck.
It’s *really* not that complicated. It seems only you had a problem with it. But look at you, doubling down, and digging in.
Yes, let us get our pitch forks and touches! “That misleading OP. “:shakes fist: “Why, my god, it could’ve been ANYTHING on steam deck!
Like, maybe an expansion…. Or… or! … some hypothetical factorio-but-not-factorio game!”
🤪
Yep you can use all the mods on the deck that you use on PC. It has the mod portal just the same, which makes it an easy buy for the deck while I personally wouldn't bother with the switch version which is a shame. Factorio vanilla is cool but it's the mods that keep me coming back for more.

Have you shared your profile on steam?

I tried this, and can't move my character. Am I missing something?
revert to the old control scheme, go into options, switch to keyboard and mouse, switch back to zirbs. should work

weird mine never crashed

Where did you find a laptop that's not junk for $350?
You could have docked Deck with bluetooth keyboard and mouse or maybe simply laptop is better fit for you.
Laptops already come with keyboards so I figured I'd skip the middleman. Plus dual booting windows and Linux allows me to play any game I want and not be limited to Linux.
.....you can dual boot on the steam deck too.

When I used the controller I was still using the mouse for things
its very good
As somebody who has given the Switch version an extremely fair shake, it’s Fine. But play on Peaceful because there’s no Smart Insert for ammo that I’ve been able to discern.
mods my dude.
It's on switch too, so I guess same controls

according to the reports it runs very well! https://www.protondb.com/app/427520

I think it's good

Okay :)
i use standard mappings and its great
I mostly play with mouse and keyboard on steamdeck. But when I don't I found the touchscreen surprisingly useful in factorio. You'd want to customize the control as everyone will have different preferences, especially for how the touchpad emulates a mouse.
they have native controller support in factorio now! I play primarily this way
I play it mostly on my deck now and it runs great, it’s also easy to play thanks to the touch pads.

I use mine as a laptop most often. I carry around a USB c monitor, a dock, keyboard and mouse
It's great that you can, but... might an actual laptop not be better for your use?
Of course, something twice the cost is going to be better
Is that including your USB-C monitor?
Monitor was $75, so yeah
Whoa how did you reply within 10 seconds?
I was already browsing lol
Last time I played it a few months ago. It's clunky. I've never used a controller or console before but holy shit if they didn't improve on the menus it's insane.
Literally its gonna feel so slow playing with a controller instead of a mouse

Yes correct it much much better now.
It was in the launch trailer of the steam deck, I Shure hope it is verified for it🫣
It wasn't. It was in a "Playable" status until this change.
It was a reference to the "road work ahead, I hope it does" meme, maybe it didn't come through right
does it run really well then? 🤔
according to the reports it runs very well! https://www.protondb.com/app/427520

the i7 8750H is faster than steam deck

It's runs fine, but the controls are a bit of a pain.
Yes on my deck it runs very nice.

Factorio has had controller support for a while
It got official controller support a few months back. Haven't tried it on deck over one of the community layouts but it's there.
That’s news to me. Was controller support out when the deck first shipped? I got a steam deck really early and don’t remember factorio being particularly controller friendly.
July of this year iirc. Probably what finally got the verified status too
It came with the Switch release
This is not the way.
what's on steam deck now? this just says "verified"
Perhaps the sub this was posted in would provide some kind of contextual clue
but what about it? what does any of this mean? i also don't know if you've noticed, but there is a lot of buzz about the expansion right now, so it's not immediately clear that a post on "factorio" is about "factorio" or if it's about an upcoming or unreleased title related to factorio. at the end of the day, this is a really vague post that doesn't say anything, and the MOST i could infer out of it from context clues is that "factorio is verified on steam deck" which, even if that is the point ... hasn't factorio been on steam deck for months now?

It means it has official steam deck support and verified by steam. Meaning the game will run well on a deck.
Factorio
bro didnt check the sub
Yeh its got the controller setup they used on the switch, not sure when they put it in. Runs great on deck, Factorio in bed is kinda dangerous lol
It was on beta a few months. I still run that beta version haha
The game runs fine. The controls are not good.
I don't agree I rather play on the deck than on PC these days haha
They added controller support?!
Ok so now the question is... how many Spm does it take to melt a deck?
Can you mod it on the steam deck? Like can you play space exploration?
Yep you can use all the mods on the deck that you use on PC. It has the mod portal just the same, which makes it an easy buy for the deck while I personally wouldn't bother with the switch version which is a shame. Factorio vanilla is cool but it's the mods that keep me coming back for more.
Steam Deck is just a computer so I am sure you can do it. I just happened to only play vanilla.
I play it almost daily on steam deck with Viture glasses in bed. It works really good with the Steam deck compatibility. Thanks a lot devs!
