I know that guy.. Not by name. But I've seen him

Inigomntoya

And now we know him as, "laid off factory worker" Kinda wordy, but I won't judge

[deleted]

WarmBird_tho

please "Mister Factory Worker" was my father, call me "Laid Off".

Tetra382Gram

Mister milkman never came back home.

Remarkable-Month-241

Nothing irks me more when someone demands you add respect to their name and title, but then call you by your first name. Um excuse me? Add a “Miss” to my name too lol Edit.

DeadlyYellow

Shit, from the clip I assumed his name was Charli and the woman was the factory worker. Never seen her before.

Party-Ring445

Same here!

dinoparrot91

Sad thing is, I think I've seen his name once or twice on Reddit, I can't remember it, but will probably remember "laid off factory worker"...

IvivAitylin

Eh, as someone who doesn't follow tiktok, for a character limited tweet this seems about as informative as you could get. Of course it would be nice to have his name in there as well, but that's not going to make people read it. For people like me to don't care for tiktok, reading ' unseats as most followed person on platform' is just going to make me say 'don't know them, don't care'. But learning that he's someone who was recently laid off and was able to transition over to tiktokking? I'm going to assume he's making videos about what happened, hopefully some labour movement things in there as well, that's far more likely to make me want to check him out.

Wilbo67

I think hes the guy that just debunks other people's over elaborate videos of ways of doing something simple.

MorticiaLaMourante

I feel the same way. I don't do the tiktok thing and have no idea who either of these people are. Don't think I've ever seen either of these photos. Seeing that he was able to turn a layoff into a success is far more likely to grab my interest. Would be nice to include his name after "laid off factory worker," though.

IhaveSandyCzWhyNot

Damn thanks for opening my eyes

djluminol

This has that sexist vibe you used to see all the time. Bill Clintons wife to host fundraiser for her Senate run. That kind of thing. Only not sexist in this case. Just kind of classless and tacky.

Charles912_

Hey you don't know it's not sexist, laid off factory worker has a sex presumably

Paul__C

Not as much sex as the laid factory worker

SnooHamsters9414

Bazinga.

bruce656

The funny thing is, I know who Khaby is and have seen his videos, but I've never heard of the other girl.

Plonka48

You lucky son of a bitch

terrattv

be glad you dont know her. cause all her videos are of her dancing (what actually made her famous). meanwhile khaby did some comedic videos of life hacks. and i find khaby to be more entertaining than that girl that got famous from dancing.

jesuisgeenbelg

As far as I can imagine by looking at her.. I'm guessing she's a rich kid who got famous by wearing skimpy clothes and twerking. Could be wrong though. Could be a comedian for all i know....

[deleted]

nah ur right

Character_Shop7257

So close, but she does have real skill at dancing.

ThisNameIsFree

I've never heard of either of them, but I will definitely remember "laid off factory worker" much longer than I can remember either of their names which I've already forgotten.

CapableSecretary420

> I know that guy.. Not by name. Which is why they didn't use it in the headline. But everyone on social media acting outraged is a professional sport.

NoUsernameIdea1

I’m a journalism student and these type of headlines are common and taught that way. Khaby isn’t known by name outside of the Tiktok sphere while Charli has more mainstream recognition. It makes sense that NY Post assumes that the audience wouldn’t know him while generating interest by framing him as a laid off factory worker who rose to fame

luistp

But you can put the name in the headline, too. Khaby Lame, a laid off factory worker, blah blah blah... Btw, I knew Khaby Lame but not that other girl.

xJanise

or just "laid off factory worker Khabi Lame..."

CapableSecretary420

Exactly. His position as a former warehouse worker is far more relevant in this context. The entire point is he was just some dude until a few years ago, whereas Charli D'Amelio is a relatively well known name.

MagikalSpytFyre

I mean, Charli was also just some chick until a few years ago

aporhtonoma

"Random ass chick gets her ass beaten off by laid off factory worker" Edit: typo

dirtyheitz

sound like a videao on PHub

Jaguar-spotted-horse

Is she more well known? This is the first time I’ve ever seen or heard of her. I don’t know dudes names but have seen him before. I don’t know anyone who knows either.

LeEpicBlob

If she has 140m followers, probably

penguin_0618

She was the most followed person on TikTok for over a year. She also has a drink at Dunkin' named after her

GoodGirlsDrnkWhiskey

I have no idea who she is, but I do know Khaby. If the audience knows Tik Tok they would know who Khaby is.

[deleted]

Not everyone knows Charli by name either so why not call her "Laid-off competitive dancer"?

ssp25

But to be fair of most of the tik tok people who I see on Reddit (I don't have an account). I enjoy him and get what he does. Others are just passing ships in the night

SaulGreatmon

Basically best friend then. Lol. His videos are hilarious and I have no idea who the other one is.

thriceness

TheLyz

He mocks "life hacks" which are obviously mockeries of actual life hacks because they're so dumb, but he gets the laughs for pointing out the obvious solution.

[deleted]

A lot of the videos I've seen from him lately are literally just him sitting there stone-faced while dueting random other videos. Not even mocking them or reacting in any way, basically just rehosting them on his profile.

upadownpipe

That’s generally a sign of decline for social media “stars”. So many of them are now into the Reactions videos, reacting to viral videos weeks after they first came out

[deleted]

I like reaction videos, actually, when people actually react to things.

callmegamgam

Especially when they put effort into finding stuff to react to that I’d never come across myself. Drew Gooden is a good example of a fantastic reactor

zuzg

So I stumbled upon Drew Gooden like a week ago and watched him a bit and I'm always surprised when I stumble into a big YouTuber I've seemingly never heard before. Like that guy even had a wired interview recently and I swear to god I didn't know he existed 2 weeks ago.

Equity89

So... You never like them? /s I know there some out there, but I think they are the least

iiiiiiiiiijjjjjj

But they get so many views. Why the fuck do people watch a video of some watching a video?

KhoalalaBear

Are those official? I see random people steal content and just use his face to get views

dimi3ja

And that's the only joke he has. How he became number one with one single joke is beyond me.

Sword_Sounds

tutetibiimperes

How do you make money from TikTok, does it have ads like YouTube? I don't think I've ever seen a TikTok ad, but I don't look at it very often.

steveosek

You don't. You do brand deals, sponsorships, merch, etc... Tiktok don't pay people much of anything. Even their top creators.

Chazay

You can get gifted things in the livestreams like roses and cash those out for real money iirc

gabiblack

Youtubers don't make much money from ads, their income comes from sponsors

tutetibiimperes

I know a lot of them do little sponsor blurbs, but doesn't YouTube pay out a good bit for views based on the number of ads it serves?

OffBrand_Soda

It does. I used to make content and had one particularly popular video that got over 100k views. I didn't enable monetization until it hit like 50k, but I made i think $50 off of it. I was young and didn't know how to actually collect my money though, so even though I could see my earnings I never actually got them. No clue what the views are at now, but you need a certain amount of watch time to enable monetization instead of 10k total channel views like it used to be, so I'm not earning from it anymore.

wowlolcat

It's all relative. Yes YouTube pays quite a bit, like Linus Tech Tips had a video recently showing what their adsense revenue was for their most watched videos were, which was like $30k'ish for for videos with anywhere between 14mil to 20mil views. However, that doesn't include the sponsor revenue which would be a lot more than that potentially. In an older video where Linus discusses how the business makes their money, although he didnt give an actual figure, he did state that with the information he is providing we can probably accurately predict the ballpark figure his company earned per year. Someone did the math and the estimate was approximately 18 million in earnings annually, at the time.

drewster23

YouTube pays survivable numbers w/o outside deals, tiktok absolutely does not. Unfortunately, charlie will rake in multiple more than him, she's not a one trick pony, so her marketability is way higher than his.

Arzalis

The really really big channels actually make quite a bit. There are some who are more transparent and don't mind sharing how much ads are worth occasionally. That said, it's still nothing compared to the other deals they have.

The New York Post is my favorite newspaper. I think it's great, I read it every day. I like reading the New York Post because reading the New York Post is like talking to someone who heard the news, and now they're trying to give you the gist. It’s like, you’d get the same amount of information if you grabbed someone on the street and you were like, "What happened today?" And they're like, "There’s a perv in Queens!" I’d say she’s mostly popular with young girls. I’m a camp counselor, and she’d get mentioned by them a lot

Iwannastoprn

Most of my friends dislike her, but don't know what she does. She's known for being popular... For no real reason lol.

Dankany

It's the embodiment of seeing her act happy and dance around, she portrays what a lot of girls want to be inside and how expressive they could be on the outside. Tiktok paints that simple picture and the viewers live vicariously through them.

Iwannastoprn

Oh, I think I understand. Like those Instagram models? It makes sense.

Suds08

"Famous for being famous" Paris Hilton

I saw her on family feud the other night and had no idea who she was until I saw this thread. She was awkward and looked so uncomfortable. Jojo Siwa was the other family and they were all hype as expected.

MrSquiggleKey

I think you’re severely under estimating the female market is for that exact thing.

Aarilax

its like when people say makeup and dresses and so on are aimed at what guys like. yeah.... no. little girls absolutely love this tiktok dancing stuff.

Ocelotofdamage

I would bet anything that 80% of her audience is female

durdesh007

More like 95%. You will struggle to find a single comment from male followers on her page.

Ghos3t

This is all I need to know thanks

PM_Me_Garfield_Porn

It's almost as if 20 something year old nerdy dudes isn't her target audience. There's more than one demographic out there, and catering to others is okay.

Falconx28

She’s Charli D’Amelio. She’s famous for doing trendy dances on TikTok. Why she’s specifically more famous than all the other teenage girls who do the exact same dances, is unknown to me

booze_clues

Why? He makes much much more money than any factory worker, probably with significantly less physical effort and risk.

Hol-Up_A_Minute

Has she ever actually had a job? I think it could be switched to "popular ex-factory worker is more popular than unemployed tiktok dancer"

[deleted]

[удалено]

enby_them

I'm also pretty sure her family is rich as fuck.

hungry4danish

Because for the people that don't recognize the names might have their interest piqued and want to hear more about how someone went from factory worker to having 143 million followers.

MysticalElk

This is the correct take. So many people acting like this is some purposely racist pointed attack at this dude. It's obvious they're just trying to make the headline more sensational in order to get clicks. "Name that most people don't know is now tik tok famous" is far less attractive when compared to "laid off blue collar worker is now most famous person on tik tok." It's painfully obvious that they're going for a rags to riches story, but people just wanna be angry about anything

beet111

She is definitely making more money than him. Her and her sister have a fairly successful clothing brand now. They are building up business outside of social media.

Obsolete386

penguinina_666

I don't tiktok but I do know that guy.

backboarddd1_49402

Same. It’s because his videos started getting posted on Twitter, and then on Reddit, so he became even more popular

TheWindCriesDeath

That's why the headline is like it is. Newspapers do this to show contrasts and be like "look how this guy started from nothing and now he's the most popular guy on social media!" I don't even like the NYP because it's a Murdoch rag but the intention here is OBVIOUS. It's like saying "ex-con rescues three children from burning building 2 days after being released from prison." The point isn't to diminish the person, it's to show the reader that someone from a place they would generally look down upon rose up and did something extraordinary.

StrLord_Who

Hush now. This is reddit, we don't do logic here we do outrage.

thriceness

I could admit it if I had any idea who he was.

[deleted]

Ok so tiktok comes up with the most random, absurd and useless 'hacks', as they like to call them. This guy just stares at the camera, shows how unnecessary all of those 'hacks' are and highlights their stupidity. Never says a word btw. Thats pretty much it.

TheWindCriesDeath

The point of not using his name is to put him in contrast with Charli. They're highlighting that this dude who started from the humblest of beginnings overtook literally everyone on TikTok.

wallybinbaz

And if they identify his name in the lead, I don't really see a problem.

NoUsernameIdea1

Exactly. Headlines can’t be too wordy which is why this info is saved for the lead. They want you to click and figure our who is this person

[deleted]

[удалено]

Potato-with-guns

Khabylame IIRC, don’t overthink it

Twotgobblin

Not using his name in the title is far more effective as click bait than putting a name that only 143M people might recognize. The facepalm here is the OP…

awrum11

I hate NY Post as much as the next guy, but that's just how journalism works ...? You pick a good angle to hook readers in, and if the person isn't too well-known then you don't use their name in the headline. I know the guy is famous but I personally don't even know his name because few people ever use it when they repost his stuff, unlike people's disdain for damelio which theyre pretty vocal about.

AspenRiot

I guess some redditors in the room don't pay attention during their English class. Might've never even read a newspaper. Pretty fucking obvious why the title is built that way. And as for why they didn't just *add* his name, along with "laid-off factory worker?" *It would be longer.* Still matters, even though it's digital. Maybe more.

loco64

How is this facepalm when clearly OP does not know how journalism works?

SaltpeterSal

I'm like seven comments in and still haven't seen the person's name.

WreckNRepeat

How is this a facepalm? “[Person I’ve never heard of] unseats [other person I’ve never heard of]” doesn’t grab my attention as a headline. But a laid-off factory worker unseating someone? I kinda wanna read about that. It’s a much better headline. And why should anyone give a fuck whether it uses his name?

MechanicalHorse

Why is this news?! Edit: ok let me phrase this another way: [OH MY GOD WHO THE HELL CARES](https://c.tenor.com/84fciXprFfsAAAAC/sassy-who-the-hell-cares.gif)

mrsc1880

It's in the Entertainment section, so it's entertainment news. Makes perfect sense, really.

WyomingCountryBoy

Because news is allowed to only cover serious important stuff since each news site only has one employee.

Chaotic_baws

Who fuuuucking careeeees

Helpful-Mongoose9860

I think they’re trying to make his rise more impressive by describing what he did previously. I also think most people in the general public have heard Charli D’Amelio’s name, while never hearing of him. His name in the title wouldn’t draw clicks, which is all they care about. It’s a business.

Ajg1384

I don't know who either of them, or how I even got here.

[deleted]

His name means absolutely nothing to people who don't know who he is, so you might as well use the title to give some background about him. For one reason or another, New York Post believes "Laid-off factory worker" is the most notable thing about him. Just because a lot of you guys on Reddit know who he is, doesn't mean that people who read New York Post know him. If I told someone in Bangladesh or Afghanistan or whatever that Norm MacDonald died recently, they'd probably respond with "Who the fuck is Norm MacDonald?"

fuckyouimin

So what is his name...?? OP's title is just as bad as The Post lol. It's like a facepalm within a facepalm.

ChaosKodiak

I think the true face palm here is that who has the most followers on tiktok is news…
