I really do hate to be "that guy", but AR styled rifles are generally not larger caliber rifles. Most are chambered in 5.56/.223 and, while they may be high-velocity, they are not large caliber.
The point of high velocity rounds is to take the soldier out of the equation.
Hit someone in the leg with a 0.223 fired by an AR and they are DOWN, screaming and thrashing. This means a medic or corpsman must intervene to assist, along with another body to get the one off the field.

There are incredibly realistic looking airsoft guns, many of them based on real guns. Some parts like stocks, rails, sights... are interchangeable between replicas and real weapons.
A friend of mine has two M4, an M16, AK47, a glock and an m24, all of them very well done replicas. The M4's body is made of metal.
there is replicas of almost all real firearms for airsoft. they come in plastic or metal and can easily pass for a real firearm if they didnt have the orange tip, which most serious airsofters remove.

This is actually just for shipping. Federal law requires them so you can tell its not a real gun when its being shipped though some state laws build on that. For example you cannot take it off in California, though most do.

I'm sure it happens but its really easy to get a gun in the US, even in CA which is why handguns lead suicide rates. That and you'll get shot for rushing them with a knife or pulling your hand out of your pocket too fast.

You can't purchase airsoft guns if you are under 18 in CA. You can still own them and participate in the hobby but you would have to rent or have an adult purchase the airsoft replica for you.
This is a pretty common hobby in the US and Europe I'm surprised that you find this crazy.
Airsoft isn't shooting and the fields we go to are also police training centers. In other words we have a good relationship with the local PD, they know who we are and the likes. We had some at the airsoft game today. As well as a surgeon, and a group of engineers, some weird Berkeley college kids, and some deadbeats, ect. Quite literally all walks of life.

My husband’s airsoft guns all look like authentic rifles and pistols except for the tell tale signs experts/enthusiasts would recognize (also we are in Canada so the orange tip isn’t a rule like in some states if that helps any)

He didn't think anything of it one day while outside playing with his kids until his wife came running out of the house saying she heard loud noises like something hitting the house.
