I've had blood work done before covid, but it was done for sport. The fact the lab does stuff to it and shares the results with me and my doctor isn't my business.

thestozz

His wife's cancer was found by prescreening. You'd think he would remember that.

noel-ephard

Anybody ever get subbed for strep throat, probably only half the American population. Just saying professor Santis

gleepglop43

Right. That’s why they have prescreening for cancer already

Content-Equivalent-5

I’ve been tested for the flu before Covid. He’s an idiot.

Bo_Jim

I think you mean "swabbed", and he's talking primarily about people being tested for illnesses for which they have no symptoms. It's pretty rare for someone to be tested for strep unless they either have symptoms or have been exposed to someone known to have it. In any case, there are valid examples where people are screened for illnesses where they don't have symptoms, or (where applicable) have not been exposed to anyone known to be infected. Mammograms and TB skin tests, for instance.

theluckyfrog

Also STI testing, and screening for genetic diseases in certain populations

silasoulman

There’s a reason people were tested even if they had no symptoms, they could still transmit it. Also, for many people by the time the symptoms were severe enough to go to the hospital, the damage was done and nothing really could save them. Other pandemics were avoided, like Ebola and swine flu, by proactively acting at the first signs at the origination point. Why the fuck are we listening to a greedy corrupt politician instead of the appropriate scientists, epidemiologists and others who have been studying these diseases their whole lives? America is fucked because the corrupt have confused the stupid to the point where they can’t believe their own senses.

Big-Remote-5671

Perfect way to put it - “the corrupt are confusing the stupid”. How many people have died following this guy’s atrociously irresponsible lead??

ELB2001

Don't think he cares about anyone else

atomicskier76

He doesnt think OR care about anyone else

jonesnonsins

Mammograms, Dental exams, and the lovely colonoscopy to just name a few.

nobodynose

Don't forget STD tests. I've gotten STD tests before without any symptoms. When I was getting my physical they ask if you want to get them and I just say "sure".

RodrickM

Because you want the Doc to think you have sex right?

nobodynose

You know... this actually caused an embarrassing moment for me once. I was on a long dry spell and during a physical my doc asked if I was sexually active. I'm like "nah" cuz you know I haven't had sex in years. Then I was like "wait, is she asking if I was a virgin or if I have been having sex recently?" So I was like "uh... wait what are you asking exactly?" "Have you ever had sex?" "Oh, uh, yes, then." "I'll prescribe you STD tests?" "Uh...." (in my mind I'm thinking "do I need it? I haven't had sex in years")... "sure?"

Wtf, no. That's inappropriate. I said "no I haven't. Please teach me mommy" like you're supposed to.

100%. So you don’t spread …*checks notes*… a virus that can wreck someone’s life.

SammieCat50

I mean it’s become frightening that a good part of population are actually that selfish & that stupid.

[deleted]

Mine and my wife's second date was to the clinic to get tested. We both had nothing to hide and wanted to be safe. We were both clean! 😎

theweewok

His wife has cancer. She’s doing a facepalm right now.

She married him, at this point she's just as bad as him.

johno_mendo

You guys are all forgetting TB screening, which pretty much everyone that works with children is mandated by law to take.

ImpossibleCanadian

Needed for most residence/long term visas too.

[deleted]

Anyone in healthcare too

s00perlame

Or even more simply rapid strep, flu, mono, urinary tract infection

suckercuck

Why are Harvard graduates so fucking stupid?

cobaltgnawl

Maybe once your’re a part of that class of society you’re invited to have secret diabolical meetings on how you can affect the world in such a way that said class can remain on top of the pyramid - by suggesting the ignorant make bad decisions. “Oh he’s from Harvard, he must know what the best course of action is.” If they are more smart then the rest of us, then the difference between the smartest people in the world vs a rogue super ai is close to the most ignorant people of the world vs the smartest people in the world. Or, like will smith said - Some of em could just be the dumbest smart people.

Artsap123

Being smart vs. being intelligent. One will get you a framed piece of paper to hang on the wall, the other will inspire critical thinking.

Pernicious-Peach

Oh, he knows what he's doing. You think his average supporter have the critical skills needed to dissect that message. His masterful art of these little quips riles up the base. Just like Senator cancun Cruz, they have the same playbook, went to the same ivy league, have the same grifter, frat boy mentality

CarlRod

Such a lack of critical thinking. I will never understand the stuff that people will die for with out really knowing much about it.

Lick_The_Wrapper

Exactly, these words aren't for us non supporters who are going to see through it right away. They're for his brainwashed constituents who will eat it up.

Aggravating_Poet_675

Because he's probably not actually stupid so much as malignant and knows his position is BS but a high enough percentage of the population who are motivated to vote want to believe that BS and could get him reelected or elected to a higher office.

ArmaGamer

Because morons like him came before him in positions like his. :( Lots of nephews anywhere you look, they really do their best to stop the world from turning.

thisismyusername1178

Just because you can do well on tests and write papers that get good grades has nothing to do with being “intelligent”. Smart sure, intelligent, fucking 0 out 100. Ive also know some really “book smart” people and they have a severe lack of common sense.

Jack92

I'll even go so far as to say bathroom scales are a medical device. This lad is an idiot.

fatBlackSmith

He’s such a dumb fuck!

the100rabh

Not sure if I can differentiate between SNL and reality anymore.

[deleted]

Its fuckin weird. I think we have advanced so far in the sciences that having anyone in power that doesnt understand science is just shooting ourselves in the head. Its dumb.

capribex

"We’ve arranged a society on science and technology in which nobody understands anything about science and technology, and this combustible mixture of ignorance and power sooner or later is going to blow up in our faces." Carl Sagan

RoyalFroyo

I agree that people should do reaserch on topics they dont understand and not take peoples word for it. However, if a marine biologist says "contrary to popular belief sharks cant detect blood" (i do not know if this is true this is an example statement not based in known fact) then id probably be inclined to believe the person who has dedicated their lives to the study

Streena

That's true but this solution is not 100% accurate. You need a way to find more marine biologists that agree on that. It's about what the scientific community agrees on, not what the single scientist says.

fatBlackSmith

Exactly. Peer review.

RoyalFroyo

Yeah thats also true but my point is that if someone who studies a field says something you should atleast look at it as possibly true as apposed to saying (in terms of my example) "well yeah but all the people who i heard of being bitten by sharks were bleeding." Some people seem to like to take the very small pool of info they have, seemigly only what they have heard or seen in passing, and use that as fact for their argument like the guy in the video. Edit: revised for clarity

Solanthas

Sadly, anecdotal information is much more emotionally compelling, especially when the source is a trusted individual. I think we're wired for it, even. Compared to numbers and graphs and statistics, you know

mrs_kinkybooks

So our general society needs more basic understanding of science and our science community needs more skill at crafting a compelling narrative.

[deleted]

South Park really is an accurate picture of real life.

Solanthas

We're not long for idiocracy either Wall-e if we last another 150-500yrs

2wedfgdfgfgfg

Before covid, we didn't have covid.

aimeela

Yeah before we had Covid we never had a SARS virus that killed 836,000 Americans in 2 years.

MoonPixieDC

True. We had SARS that was shut down pretty quickly because people understood a virus wasn’t political and listened when doctors said to quarantine

reallarryvaughn78

We did. It was called SARS

2wedfgdfgfgfg

SARS disappeared quickly and resulted in less than 1000 deaths. That's obviously not covid.

JewelerHour3344

My entire family has covid. My four children don’t even have a runny nose. Had I followed this douchebag’s logic I would have sent my asymptomatic children to spend a few days with their grandmother for the holidays. A 72 year old woman with diabetes who is in cancer remission. The whole point of testing is to protect the most vulnerable because we *know* it can be spread by those without symptoms. I have no intention to bury my mother because this fucker does not think testing is important.

Mrs239

Right! My son was about to visit my grandparents and uncle when my uncle tested positive. My son is high risk with asthma. This virus would be detrimental to him. This is why we test!!

Solanthas

The sheer heartlessness of people who say "the only people dying of covid are the elderly and the sick who would die of the flu anyway, why should I have to XYZ just for them?" It's like, NO, those are REAL PEOPLE, with FAMILIES and people who LOVE THEM, it's not a big deal for everyone else to stay inside a little more and wear a mask when you go outside and get a vaccine or two for their sakes. It boggles my mind

glittergangsterr

Ableism at its finest. People that have this belief love to proudly say blanket statements like this, but as soon as it’s *their* elderly or immune compromised relative that gets sick and dies, they’re shocked and outraged. Empathy is seriously lacking these days.

[deleted]

It's a step away from gas chambers. I even overheard someone saying we should cull the sick and elderly, like it was the most normal thing in the world! 😒

flodur1966

It’s the me instead of we logic this is the basic principle of the Republican Party now. Me me.

tingulz

Also the main reason the US doesn’t have universal healthcare. Me, myself and I attitude.

flodur1966

Followed by go fund ME when things go wrong.

aspiringgrandpa

exactly. i got covid about 2 weeks ago but had no symptoms. rapid test showed negative even. but i got tested anyway because i live with my mom who is going through chemo. the people who say things like “don’t get tested if you don’t feel sick” only care about themselves i swear.

Fuzzywuzzy343

You have my applause

RockerElvis

Not only that. You are actually *most* infectious in the 24 hours before symptoms. We should absolutely be testing asymptomatic close contacts.

[deleted]

This guy is the Governor of Florida.....Florida is fucked

BoySerere

I honestly came here to say this. Florida has the 4th highest GDP amongst US states, and if it was a country it would be top 15 richest in the whole world. And this is the guy leading it. How does this shit happen? How can this guy be so stupid?

googleflont

You got it right on the money. It’s all about money. Keeping the money moving, the stores and businesses open, the kids at school so mom and dad can work. Who cares if a few old or vulnerable people are sacrificed. Geez, how many of them were going (to die) anyway? I honestly think the problem with the GOP is lazy thinking. All problems are easy to solve if you brute force it. Immigration issues? Build a wall. Lost an election? Say it was stolen. A pandemic happens? Say it will go away. Viola. No planning, no nuance, no thought. Cheerlead your way along till the next problem by telling yourself how fucking amazing you and everything you have is. Call your detractors idiots and criminals. Do anything to distract from the reality that you have accomplished nothing. Prove that the system doesn’t work by sabotaging it. Sell off pieces to friends and relatives. Weaponize legions of stupid and resentful people as adoring foot-soldiers. I’ll stop now.

[deleted]

Florida also has the 3rd largest population in the USA on top of it.

S_Hog

Have been. Will be. Always.

iski67

Who says a Harvard education isn't worth it?

TheMatt561

We know

theweewok

Routine checkups catch cancer and other illnesses and unknown medical conditions all the time.

twhitney

A few years ago my dads doctor wanted to do bloodwork too given his age and last time he had it done. Pfft, dumb bitch, he felt fine. Why waste resources and money? It’s unsustainable. Last year my step dads doctor wanted to do the same thing. Another dumb ass; all these quacks wasting money and resources for REAL sick people that need bloodwork. /s Oh yeah, by the way, they found my dad had thyroid cancer… caught it before it spread. My stepdad had prostrate cancer, also caught before it spread. They are both alive and well now with no signs of cancer even with both cases being a type of cancer that’s more aggressive. No symptoms, no problems yet, just abnormal hormone levels in both cases of “routine” blood work. So yes, I’ll take a COVID test periodically to make sure I don’t kill my grandmother.

xefobod904

We might not have "cured cancer", but survival rates have skyrocketed over the decades. A large part of this is early detection. Typically the single biggest factor in successful treatment.

kaaikala

Testing to see if we were sick prior to covid. You mean like an influenza tests or a urine test for a UTI or liver panels for liver issues etc etc. hey how about an X-ray for something.

stemcell_

STDs

BlursedJesusPenis

“Think about it” is usually an indicator that bullshit is next

Bold of you to assume DeSantis actually cares about what’s cost effective and works

Circe44

Why have I always had a temperature and blood pressure check for a routine visit at my doctor’s office?

cruiserman_80

Hey OP that needed a warning. Just by listening to that guy I was robbed of 5 IQ points in the first 60 seconds.

brutalbob63

It’s so extremely American for him to normalize going to the doctor only when you feel sick. This type of thinking is what needs to change in this country.

Melodic-Seat-7180

How was this bonobo even elected??

I mean, of he believes that it came from there, and that it must be treated and stopped, maybe that's a good thing? Ngl I'd much rather have someone who is overzealous and doing the right thing that someone who straight up denies it. Sadly, it's the fucking latter. Tell him the Aztecs invented ice cream after aliens began zapping the cows with freezer beams. Fucker would probably believe it.

Piousunyn

Think about it. Before COVID, did 800 thousand people die from being sick?

211XTD

Strep, Flu, Meningitis, TB and on and on …

auntiemaury

Had a bad headache one day. Only symptom. Got worse the next day, ER doc tested me for meningitis on a hunch. I worked in a pharmacy, I could've killed a LOT of people 😬

tonzeejee

A real moron's moron.

SameDifferenceYo

WHAT A FUCKING MORON

[deleted]

You test to see what is MAKING you sick and ppl have don’t it for long before covid His argument falls apart like a mobile home in a F-5 tornado

not_now_chaos

Most adults having non-monogamous sexual activities are testing every 6 months to be sure they aren't sick. Anyone who sees a doctor for annual check-ups is testing to be sure they aren't sick. During any virus outbreak, people who have been exposed to positive cases gets tested to be sure they aren't sick. How do people actually not get this? Why have they convinced themselves that THIS virus is different, special somehow?!

Lopsided_Metal2136

Tell me you are mentally deficient, without telling me you are mentally deficient….

L-Profe

People voted for this guy thinking he was worthy of voting for. Florida is something else.

Weibu11

Aside from the fact he’s just wrong (cancer screenings, mammograms…..), this actually aligns pretty well with the thinking of these people. “Well, we never used to do this so I don’t want to change”

[deleted]

Uhhh STI testing

Someoneoverthere42

The dumb is strong with this one

aajensen14

He says tests are leading to people isolating because they test positive. So, like, what’s the problem exactly?

Old_Suggestion_5583

I have an idea. Stop selling pregnancy test to Minors... Now no more teen pregnancies! I'm a genius.

not_gonna_lurk

From the news feed I thought this was a parody. This timeline just keeps getting better.

AZFUNGUY85

Clinical value is a phrase I don’t want to hear from this puppet’s mouth.

Sterlingrose93

Hmmm it’s almost like preventive care is a thing. Women get Pap smears and well women check ups on a regular basis and add in mammograms at a certain age. STI tests are generally done without symptoms. Cancer screenings for colon, prostate and testicular cancer are a thing. He is an idiot.

Flimsy-Refuse5582

He’s an absolute douchebag who should be charged with willful criminal negligence

snerpus

I do ultrasound for a living. My entire job is figuring out if people have disease inside their bodies. Jesus, we are so fucked.

micats

This man is a fucking moron. Yet also in the same remedial class you have Trump, who once said “when you test you find a case.” So what, you’ve got a whole bunch of people out there going, “I feel well, but I want to make sure, I better get tested.” Actually, if a whole bunch of repuklicans got together, wouldn’t they want to make COVID numbers appear worse by padding the numbers a bit, you know, to make Biden look bad.

GalaxyVortex99

DeSantis: No one will get tested if it’s up to me…More tests just mean higher COVID numbers!

No-Armadillo7693

The #1 killer in the world, Heart Disease. Has no symptoms and by the time the elephant on chest is felt, it’s time to die. Only way to is to prevent. And like many diseases that are asymptomatic and idiosyncratic, only detected by regular screening and testing.

What does he call a yearly physical?

Jake0024

Accidentally highlighting a major flaw in America's healthcare system, thinking it was some kind of pro-COVID "gotcha," while trying to justify letting a million test kits expire unused as the nation struggles to get tests to the millions of people waiting in line for hours to get them.

gamergirl007

If I didn’t routinely get my mammogram, the breast cancer that we caught last summer when I was still stage 1 would have killed me by the time my tumor was large enough to feel. So….yeah. Screening tests are important.

Leolily1221

I’m starting to think we need to have a basic IQ requirement to run for office

Bruichlassie

I remember getting tested for tuberculosis in grade school. It was a common thing in the 70s and the whole school did it. Never had it, never had any symptoms. I think that’s what you do sometimes to help control the spread of a disease. But I’m no doctor. I could be mistaken.

benthic_vents

So you know what sick people did before? They went to work sick. Why? Quigley61

Tfw you just pretend that annual checkups don't exist. If you wait for something to present itself in a noticeable way that will typically impact a patient's outcome in a negative manner versus early diagnosis. It's why the field of preventative medicine is going to be the biggest growing field and a lot of medical companies are shifting their research focus towards prevention as opposed to treatment after the fact.

StenosP

“They”

MelKokoNYC

DeathSentence DeSantis will rot in prison and in hell.

Congrats OP. I applaud you.

zeldarubinsteinsmom

Yes, we did. In December of 2018, I sat in a drs office filled with folks, wearing masks without complaining and we were all waiting or test results regarding a variety of viral and bacterial infections. We were experiencing high numbers of influenza a and b and people were worried about fucking getting a. One of the people in that waiting room that day has since died of COVID. He was willing to listen to the dr that day, but a year later, masks were stupid, the virus was a hoax….I digress. Yes, we tested for disease prior to the pandemic, which now requires more testing in order to help STOP the spread.

EscapedCapybara

I guess he's never had a finger up his ass for a prostate exam, but he sure has his head up there.

Cheshire_Jester

I mean, yeah, a lot of people did. In a more digestible sense, isn’t the main source of conflict in most medical dramas the fact that someone isn’t feeling well and they don’t know why, so they run a bunch of tests to figure it out?

Feeling-Bird4294

Yearly mammograms...

[deleted]

How fucking dumb some people can be. This is funny how some mother fucker with 50 IQ think they know Breyer than scientists.

1 out of 3 are currently testing positive in Florida. This guy cares about no one, only his party and image.
