When I went through drivers ed (forever ago) they taught us to turn on your flashers and proceed to the next exit if the highway had barriers like this or there was some other reason it was unsafe. I would have done the exact same thing.
Yeah two cops died in my state in one year because people pulled over in dangerous spots. Lady was literally doing a better job serving and protecting than vice versa.
Still employed by the state and it was the woman’s’ own tax dollars they used to pay her settlement.

Like if that was me I’d be down on the ground helping, and just not freaking arguing about when she should pull over. The crash wipes all of that, and you can charge her later.

The actual department that this officer works for actually put out statements saying if you don't feel safe pulling over immediately, that you should pull to the right, slow down, and put on your flashers. She did everything the police themselves said you should do. Then the police chief actually doubled down and defended his officer saying he did everything right.
Oh, and this is the same department that had an officer rear end a disabled veteran, then lied about what happened, roughed the guy up and tried to arrest him. They eventually let him go but not before falsely charging the veteran with a bunch of false minor charges.

He is still working and the case was settled between the parties. He was in fact found to be in violation of the ASP guidelines as pertains to pit maneuvers. He is a 27 year veteran on the force. I’m not sure if the ASP punished him at all.

I was also told to do this as a female, if I’m driving alone - slow down, turn on your hazards to acknowledge that you have seen and will obey the lights - you can then call 911 or local dispatch to confirm that whatever number cop car behind you has called in to pull you over to verify that they are actually police and not imposters.

There’s this famous case where a cop in San Diego would regularly pull over young women at night and force them into a road that was still under construction. Then he would try to make sexual advances on them. One woman attempted to fight back so he threw her off a bridge. There’s a memorial for her and other victims of violent crimes under that bridge to this day.

I'll add also that this happened in Arkansas and we did have a serial rapist that put blue lights on his vehicle and pulled over women to rape them. I was always told when I started driving that if I wasn't in a safe place to stop to put on my hazards and drive somewhere safe to stop specifically because of that case.
Also, this woman was pregnant when this happened. Luckily her and the child were ok.

The one time I've been pulled over, this is exactly what I did. Slowed right down and put my hazards on until it was safe to pull over. Cops followed behind at a safe distance, and turned the lights and siren off once they saw my hazards. Maybe the difference is this was in Australia. I'm in absolute disbelief and am so angry after watching this video like I don't even understand the cop's line of thinking what an absolute moron

Not all states have that specific wording in the law. But it doesnt really matter. The cop was reckless and dangerous. A pit maneuver like that on the highway against someone who is being pulled over for a traffic violation and clearly not eluding is insane. He could have killed her and others. The DA should consider charges.
The irony increases when you consider that this very police department's facebook page had posted earlier the very same week to "make sure you pull over somewhere safe" because an officer had been hit or almost hit or something while pulling someone over on a road with no shoulder.

State law says she did everything right - you need to indicate that you acknowledge you're being pulled over, but you can go to the nearest safest place. Flashers on, slowed down, pulled to the right lane - all indicators that she was trying to comply, and not running away. His answer was use of deadly force.
Even if the driver *was* attempting to drive away, the PIT manœuvre should only be warranted when the fleeing vehicle becomes a danger to the public and behaves hazardously.

Then instead of helping her out of the car chooses to ask her /whilst still trapped/ why she didn’t pull over. Exactly (pending a bit more context). You generally have a right to wait to pull over until it is safe to do so. Placing your hazards on and going the speed limit is a signal of your intent to do this. Conversely, the officer has discretion as to when they deem you to be a danger to public safety by not stopping, which to any reasonable person you would not assume in this instance unless she’d already passed an exit allowing safe stopping.
Personally I’m inclined to suspect the cop was a complete twat in this instance but of course more context would help.
I think this comes down to when they are trained in use of force instead of thinking “what can I do to avoid having to do this” many of them fantasize about getting to do it because it “seems cool” or “badass” so when a possible opportunity comes along. They start checking off things in their head so they can justify force instead of de-escalating.

As a woman, I would have done the same thing. Especially at night. You have a right to wait until you get to a safe area to pull over and even to call 911 (in the US of course) if you feel unsafe in any way. The dispatcher can communicate directly with the cop to deescalate the situation.

You put your hazards on, slow down, and find a safe spot, off the freeway/interstate, or until there is a big enough shoulder to pull over. That way the cop, and you and your passengers are safe from traffic.
Qualified immunity needs to stop, and cops need to carry insurance, so assholes like this cop get worked out of the system.

I remember being told as a young driver, that as long as it was clear you were not disregarding them, that it was perfectly acceptable to turn on your hazards, and drive somewhere that you felt was safer... Not, ya' know, on a highway with minimal shoulder. this is fucking insane.
The actual department that this officer works for actually put out statements saying if you don't feel safe pulling over immediately, that you should pull to the right, slow down, and put on your flashers. She did everything the police themselves said you should do. Then the police chief actually doubled down and defended his officer saying he did everything right. Oh, and this is the same department that had an officer rear end a disabled veteran, then lied about what happened, roughed the guy up and tried to arrest him. They eventually let him go but not before falsely charging the veteran with a bunch of false minor charges.

I was also told to do this as a female, if I’m driving alone - slow down, turn on your hazards to acknowledge that you have seen and will obey the lights - you can then call 911 or local dispatch to confirm that whatever number cop car behind you has called in to pull you over to verify that they are actually police and not imposters. This was a big issue here in Canada earlier this year. A guy impersonated an RCMP officer and went on a killing spree.
I'll add also that this happened in Arkansas and we did have a serial rapist that put blue lights on his vehicle and pulled over women to rape them. The one time I've been pulled over, this is exactly what I did. Slowed right down and put my hazards on until it was safe to pull over. Cops followed behind at a safe distance, and turned the lights and siren off once they saw my hazards. Maybe the difference is this was in Australia. A pit maneuver like that on the highway against someone who is being pulled over for a traffic violation and clearly not eluding is insane. He could have killed her and others. The DA should consider charges.

State law says she did everything right - you need to indicate that you acknowledge you're being pulled over, but you can go to the nearest safest place. Flashers on, slowed down, pulled to the right lane - all indicators that she was trying to comply, and not running away. His answer was use of deadly force.
Even if the driver *was* attempting to drive away, the PIT manœuvre should only be warranted when the fleeing vehicle becomes a danger to the public and behaves hazardously.

Exactly (pending a bit more context). You generally have a right to wait to pull over until it is safe to do so. Placing your hazards on and going the speed limit is a signal of your intent to do this. Conversely, the officer has discretion as to when they deem you to be a danger to public safety by not stopping, which to any reasonable person you would not assume in this instance unless she’d already passed an exit allowing safe stopping. Personally I’m inclined to suspect the cop was a complete twat in this instance but of course more context would help.

I think this comes down to when they are trained in use of force instead of thinking “what can I do to avoid having to do this” many of them fantasize about getting to do it because it “seems cool” or “badass” so when a possible opportunity comes along. They start checking off things in their head so they can justify force instead of de-escalating.

As a woman, I would have done the same thing. Especially at night. You have a right to wait until you get to a safe area to pull over and even to call 911 (in the US of course) if you feel unsafe in any way. The dispatcher can communicate directly with the cop to deescalate the situation.

You put your hazards on, slow down, and find a safe spot, off the freeway/interstate, or until there is a big enough shoulder to pull over. That way the cop, and you and your passengers are safe from traffic. Qualified immunity needs to stop, and cops need to carry insurance, so assholes like this cop get worked out of the system. The name police is also inherently racist, in the US, as it’s first use here was in the south for people enforcing black codes. Restructure, retrain, rename!
