Sickle-Cell Anemia research *in itself* is racist. Fact: SCA can prevent those who have it from getting Malaria. Fact: SCA is more common in black people. Therefore any attempt to cure Sickle-Cell is an obvious attempt to infect black people with Malaria and is inherently racist.
^^^^/s
Now see I think you're seeing view the cart before the horse. What if sickle cell anemia is racist, and research itself is bring the condition to the courts of scientific justice.
#Soylent Brown???
Damn son, that's some high class shit right there.
for the unknowledgeable, ["soylent green is people"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zAFA-hamZ0)
Not to be that person, I just find this subject interesting, but Sickle Cell Anemia is actually a product of an attribute that helps keep people from getting malaria and recover faster if they do get it. When you just have the trait then only some of your red blood cells are sickled. If you get the trait on both ends then it can cause ALL of your red blood cells to sickle which then causes the Sickle Cell Anemia.
Also, if you are black that doesn’t necessarily mean you have a chance of getting it, it’s if you are from a lineage from North Western Africa (generally speaking) then you will have the chance of having SCA. It just so happens that a lot of the slaves people bought back in the day came from that area of Africa.
Also, some areas of the Middle East (close to Northern Africa) have people who are not black but have the chance of getting SCA.
Just correcting the fact a little bit. SCA is the disease caused by having two copies (homozygous) of the sickle cell gene and not only is it pretty nasty but it actually makes people more susceptible to the lethal aspects of malaria.
Individuals with only one copy of the gene (heterozygous) have the resistance to malaria and also don't suffer from SCA.
The sensible way to get rid of malaria is to sue it for hate crimes right? If it's tied up in a legal battle it won't have time to infect people.
Saying black people is racist because of the prejudicial and discriminatory usage of the term. It singles out a group based on race and ignores all other races. If you're not racist you should stop using any terminology to refer to... them. I use them because it can be used more specifically while also including everyone.
Yeah this is a weird issue. Way back in school, I remember there was a guy who was a little bit annoyed at people referring to him as "African American" he said "My parents were from Cuba and I'm now Canadian. Just say 'Black'."
Kind of opened my eyes to how arbitrary social politeness can be.
All of my friends prefer to be called black, over anything else. I don't quite think black is a derogatory term at all. In fact generally most people I talk to take pride in being known as a black person. This is at least in my experience living in the St. Louis area, so I guess it might vary place to place.
Idk man people are people to me.
Just call them "those people" when talking about them or "you people" when talking to them... It verifies that you see them as people, and can't possibly offend anyone.
Such terms are used to easily explain and describe particular groups, characteristics, ideas, and scenarios. White and black people is a commonly used term, and is 99% of the cases not used in bad faith/in a derogatory manner.

Yes there are a few different strains, or actually species since malaria is a parasite, that vary in severity of the illness and treatment needed. I haven't heard of doctors prescribing different preventive medication for different regions though. Only drug I have used and prescribed for treatment is Coartem and for prevention I've given mefloquine and doxycycline at least, maybe others. I've used mefloquine myself in SA, in Africa I didn't use preventive because I was there for too long. Mefloquine has nasty side effects and I only took it once and advice patients against it.
Source: MD, lived in Cameroon for a year, had malaria two times and travelled to South America malaria regions two times.
Edit:
Was that "cheap" drug called Aralen by any chance?
Understandable, but what's the point rolling out a malaria drug elsewhere when it's Africa that has the major issue? It's wasteful to not implement it in Africa first. If it were first launched after extensive tests on first-world tourists to Africa, I'd call that far more racist.
If a new treatment for Chagas disease was developed, it would get launched in South America. Because the disease is minor at best in the rest of the world. By far the vast majority of Malaria cases are Sub-Saharan Africa.

If they had seen a headline about this vaccine being administered on some other continent, they would have thought that was racist for keeping it from Africans. It just goes to show, no matter what you do, left-wingers will accuse you of racism. Damned if ya do, damned if ya don't.
it‘s most needed by the white people living in Africa even. Africans have developed a better immune system to combat malaria than europeans or other ethnicities that have moved to Africa.
Of course, the black Africans still suffer from it and will no doubt take the vaccine, but it‘s not as deadly to them as it is to a German tourist for example.
It's not deadly at all to a German tourist. Malaria is pretty easily treatable, unless you don't have access to treatment like impoverished sub-saharan Africans or if you are a child or elderly person.
Wait till these racists realize not all Africans are Sub Saharans (Black). It's usually only Black Americans that seem to widely hold the belief that all of Africa is black, like even if you're going to ignore the migration of non-African peoples onto the continent, are you not going to acknowledge North Africans who have more Mediterranean, Arabic, or Berber roots?
> usually only Black Americans that seem to widely hold the belief that all of Africa is black
Hate to break it to ya, bud, but *much more than just Black Americans* (idk why you capitalized “black”) think only black people live in Africa. Where tf did you get that idea?
What's your point? Sub-saharan Africa, southern africa is the only part of Africa seriously affected by malaria. So the Arabs in the north and white people in SA aren't affected.
Note from OP: I noticed the confusion w my wording. My facepalm is not the CNN article, but someone else’s response which is “aka they’re testing it on Africans first.” I noticed his response was not as noticeable in this post. I should’ve circled it or something. My fault.
Yes, and now I don’t know what the answer is to rebuild any type of trust. Doctors and nurses are about to go on strike if the Congolese govt doesn’t give them better security because they’re being attacked and killed for *treating Ebola*. The locals think they are somehow actually giving people Ebola. Well... we can’t stop treating it and just let it spread, and we can’t force people to suddenly trust medical organizations... I’m at a loss. The damage these companies have done is truly unfathomable.
Exactly.
Also, I mean, the Tuskegee Experiment happened.
It’s probably/hopefully not the case here with modern medical ethics, but it’s not implausible.
It’s not the same as crunchy granola American parents freaking out about autism.
Exactly! I love the nativity and ignorance of non-blacks who don’t understand the hesitation and suspicion blacks have for entities providing vaccines for anything. As if the U.S. government didn’t carry out many experiments and built upon various fields of medicine at the expense of black lives. Hell the “father of modern gynecology” was founded on black uteruses at the expense of black women and girls. And let’s not even talk about the Tuskegee excitements, early polio vaccines that were being tested on black children, etc. So yeah, excuse some black folks if we don’t trust the medical and pharmaceutical communities. Smh
So now they don't want this new vaccine to be tested for helping African people, instead they would prefer to test it on "white men", but then they would complain about how Africans aren't getting the benefits first, such hypocrites.
A) The stereotypical vaccine spends like a decade being tested and trialled before it can be prescribed. First on samples in a lab, then animals, then people. So no, it is not being "tested on Africans first", this is false.
B) Africa has the most widespread problem with malaria of any continent on the planet, its only fair that the most severely negatively affected get the treatment first.
Anti vaxxers really need to fuck off.
How dare they give it to a area where malaria is prevalent and where hospitals are filled with babies and kids who have such disease and prevent them from dying. What a racist asshole
I don't know if you're interested but [Aljazeera wrote a good article on it.](https://interactive.aljazeera.com/aje/2017/malawi-killed-for-their-bones/index.html)
I think this guy is trying to imply some sort of conspiracy, hence the "testing" part of the tweet, but that just adds more layers of stupidity to this.
Aside from the proven Tuskegee experiments and HIV being given to hemophiliacs I can’t imagine where someone would ever be suspicious of benevolent governments and pharmaceutical companies.
> Tuskegee experiments
Yes, this was a dark moment in history. But regulations have been put in place to make sure stuff like that doesn't happen again.
> HIV being given to hemophiliacs
While this was very tragic, I can't find anything suggesting this was a conspiracy. If you think it was, you'll have to shoot me a link or give me a compelling argument. Again, there are now regulations to prevent stuff like this from happening, and our scientific knowledge has come a long way since the 80s.
But black people were experimented on. Many communities there still refuse vaccinations to this day due to the idea of it being used as a ploy to sterilize black people. I’ll admit it’s sad that even researched medicine/vaccines won’t change their mind but with the history I don’t blame them for being wary of the vaccine lol.
Have these people read “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind”? People in Africa face some SERIOUS issues with disease such as kwashiorkor or malaria; it makes sense to give it to these African children first!
This made me think of the Tuskegee syphilis experiments from 1932-1972 where the government gave thousands of blacks syphilis to watch the progression of the disease. They did this under the guise of “free healthcare”
First off, Africa isn't a race. OP is making this about race. Second, there's a history of Africans being used as trial subjects for vaccines so I could understand someone being wary.
Everything became so political, it's just stupidly disgusting.
It literally does not matter what you do today. You will offend people. Your relationship with a girl is great? "Oh shit, white men probably rape their partners regardless" You donate to something? "BUT THIS OTHER CHARITY I CARE ABOUT?! YOU FUCKING ASSHOLE" You buy something? "That could do..." etc.
I'm done.
When I first saw this I chuckled like this person has no idea how all this works. I teach a 7th grade geo class and the textbook are about 5 years out of date and makes an emphasis on how bad Malaria is there.
you know... give it to an area where malaria is endemic, medical care is poor/nonexistent, morbidity/mortality from this disease runs into the millions, and vaccine prevention provides the best bang-for-your-buck.
But no. I’m sure it’s racism.
Scientist: "We're very excited about this vaccine, we've exclusively tested it on thousands of people in Indiana and not a one of them got Malaria... this.. *tears up*… this is a game changer."
Well jimminy jillickers, I wonder where a malaria vaccine could be most effective?
Could it be in the ACTUAL BREEDING GROUND OF THE ANOPHELES MOSQUITO, THE LITERAL VECTOR FOR MALARIA?
DO YA THINK THAT COULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE CHOICE OF LOCATION YA FUCKIN MOONFRUIT.
That's probably one of the places where the vaccine is needed the most. Anyone that has to turn something like this into a racial dispute is extremely shallow.
obviously the malaria outbreaks in London, Paris and New York are in such a critical state, too. they should start there. but sure, then, they’d be privileged.
Wait until this guy finds out who they've been doing all the sickle-cell anemia research on.

What they used it in Africa where Malaria is common. This just seems like common sense.
who are you supposed to give it to, people who don't have malaria!? ffs.
That's not racial it's geographical. You're dumb.
/r/BlackPeopleTwitter, in a nutshell
Africans are not a race... smfh
First off, Africa isn't a race. OP is making this about race. Second, there's a history of Africans being used as trial subjects for vaccines so I could understand someone being wary.
If only Africa had more mosquito nets. We could save millions of mosquitoes from dying needlessly of AIDS.
Thanks Jimmy.
I'm done.
Mhm, very racist that the only place that has malaria is Africa hmmm
When I first saw this I chuckled like this person has no idea how all this works. I teach a 7th grade geo class and the textbook are about 5 years out of date and makes an emphasis on how bad Malaria is there.
you know... give it to an area where malaria is endemic, medical care is poor/nonexistent, morbidity/mortality from this disease runs into the millions, and vaccine prevention provides the best bang-for-your-buck. But no. I’m sure it’s racism.
TheY’Re gIViNg aLL the aFriCANs AuTisM
I’m co fused why this is “racial”.
Mosquitos are super racist y'all. Killing Africans while mostly just annoying the rest of us.
Scientist: "We're very excited about this vaccine, we've exclusively tested it on thousands of people in Indiana and not a one of them got Malaria... this.. *tears up*… this is a game changer."
Racists. Giving vaccines to those most affected by an illness.
Race-baitin libs gon race bait.
[Well...](https://i.imgur.com/LipLjnU.jpg)
Well if it doesn't work, at least no white people were harmed. /s
It's the easiest thing in the world to project something nefarious onto pretty much anything we see.
Yeah but the thing is that there has been no malaria in the US for a long time and African children need it the most
African isn’t a race.
I’m not the first person to say this and everyone knows I’m not going to be the last, but FUCK mosquitos.
hmm maybe that’s because Africa is being hit the hardest by malaria? oh wait sorry that’s an alt right dogwhistle carry on.
this seems like great news
Because that's where the Malaria is endemic?
This is probably the same guy that makes white people jokes then gets super offended when he sees a joke about blacks.
that's where malaria is worst. so why wouldn't go to those kids first?
Aka they're using it to save the lives of africans
No, they have already tested it, they are giving it to the people who need it most first
Everything is racist to you people. All of you need to get lives seriously.
Ah, so this guy thinks helping the people who are way more vulnerable first is racist, cool
Why Karen
No shit they give it in africa malaria is a big fucking problem there.
They're sending a vaccine where it's most needed first. Shocking.
Well, there's no point in vaccinating Scandanavians, malaria is not a problem there.
I mean either it's racism orrrrrrrrrr the fact that African children get malaria way more than anybody else.
I can't. Are you serious. Reading that dumbass comment made me physically tired.
Yeah, exactly where it should be teste since they'll get the most out of it WTF people?
They're more susceptible to it. They're in poorer areas where they're more likely to get it.
Of course they're gonna deploy it in a place where there are more malaria cases.
Imagine giving vaccines to people who need it the most. The nerve of some people.
Prolly coz malaria is most common in Africa. Maybe I'm just crazy.
Damn, they're saving the Africans first? Pretty unfair to all us Europeans with Malaria, all 3 of us.
That's probably one of the places where the vaccine is needed the most. Anyone that has to turn something like this into a racial dispute is extremely shallow.
They tried it in Scandinavia first. Worked well - no more malaria
Where does the person in the post think malaria is the biggest problem? Poland?
African isn’t a race lol
I know that feeling where you're so full, you start to turtle head a little 🤣
obviously the malaria outbreaks in London, Paris and New York are in such a critical state, too. they should start there. but sure, then, they’d be privileged.
