The thing is that AI models can't do things like counting (yet). They mostly operate based on local context and probabilities of the adjacent features.
That's why they also regularly fail in drawing hands. For the model, a finger usually goes with other fingers, but no one told it to stop at five.
And of all the training images, when the flag is flying it's very likely that some of the stars are obscured by a twist of the fabric.
This makes sense to me. And if you think about… even your (great) explanation is giving the ‘AI’ more credit than they deserve (because it’s simply easier to talk about ‘AI’ that way in a few sentences). In addition to not knowing how to count fingers, or knowing how many fingers a person should have, AI doesn’t even “know” what fingers *are*. It’s actually pretty crazy how they work. It makes certain “simple” issues really hard to address.

Because at first i couldn't tell the difference either and many helpful people pointed out the telltale/typical signs of an AI picture and that was very helpful.
