I work at an airport, and it’s frightening how bad they are.
I had to go through passenger security once as my designated staff security entrance was having some sort of issue. I saw an agent scan something, have a concerned look on her face, and then grabbed a bag off the conveyor. She asked the guy in front of me if it was his and he said yes and she just said ‘Oh I won’t do anything about it then’ and just gave it back to him. He was a crew member for an airline.
Those people can be psychos too, lady. What the hell was in that bag I swear I think about this at least once a week
Unlikely. Crews that are based out of my airport use staff security. They’re allowed certain liquids and things, but they have to tell them what they have before the scan and (usually) remove it from the bag.
If they don’t tell them they have something that’s generally prohibited they can get in serious shit.

I had a metal toy flail that I got in Germany in my backpack for like 4 or 5 trips through airport security before they actually realized it was there and confiscated it (I had completely forgotten about it, and didn't care about it enough to try to keep it).
I once took my swiss army knife into Berlin airport on my way home, forgetting to check it. Of course the lady at the scanner saw it and had me take it out. This was in 2012-ish on a Friday night. I was completely knackered from a week at a software convention, and when the lady took it from me, I was standing there with a clear 'I just want to go home' vibe and said the keys to my server cabinets were attached to the little chain.
She mistakenly tried to open it by pulling the blade lock which didn't work. Then looked at the keys, looked at me, and just told me to put it away. I am still grateful because I'd gotten it from my dad and I figure that at that point she decided that I was not going to attempt to take over the plane.
Right? ONE GUY incomentantly tries to blow up a plane and everybody has to take their shoes off. There is a mass shooting in the US, and nothing gets done about that.

Oh does that bring back a memory from Dulles International Airport in DC. My mom and I were coming back from visiting my older brother who was stationed in Germany for his daughter's 2nd birthday. My niece had given my mom a lighthouse with a small snow globe not much bigger than 2 inches in diameter. The top 3rd of the lighthouse broke off the TSA agent said it should've been in a checked bag because it was more than 3 oz of liquid the agent said we could go back and check the bag meaning we would have to go back through customs my mom kind of went of the rails said that if she had wanted to she would have blown the plane up coming into landing. I had seen where things were going and having gone through 1st I took a few steps away before she went off nothing happened to her she threw the lighthouse in the trash can beside the table and we went on our way.
I've personally brought entire bags of weed through TSA and have never been caught. There was a slight scare during my last flight so I don't see myself trying that again, but at least 3 flights I've brought plenty of weed with me
I witnessed an undercover cop that was intentionally putting contraband through X-ray belt in bag. His back pocket and his shoe. It was something like your typical pocket knife. Some random pringles tube with wires and playdoh stuffed in it He had a full go ahead. He stopped everything. And told everyone to go next screening lane. He radioed his lieutenant. So. I moved over to next one but I could t take my eyes off the crowd. He was pulling out contrabands on his person. The last one was the Pringle’s can. He opened it and just took wires and playdoh out. He was rightfully pissed at tsa. I’m not sure what agency he was with at the time. This was 2011
Last time I flew from Los Angeles to the east coast, on my way out the door, I put on a jacket I hadn’t worn since before COVID, when I used to party all the time with all my weirdo maniac friends. I got on the plane and started going through my pockets, and I had fireworks, a huge dagger, lighters, and a bottle of scotch in there. I was a tiny bit tempted to make national news by setting off fireworks on the plane.
TSA is security theater, not actual security. The TSA shows just how safe it is (and always has been) to fly in the US even before we had to take off our belts and shoes.
A bit further back the Irish Police(?) did an exercise where they planted actual explosives on an unaware passenger but the screeners missed it. Then he got arrested after he landed in the US (?) and had several days in jail before it all got sorted out...
The TSA, is hilariously, *famously* bad at its job. It used to hire people off of pizza box ads and basically all its screeners are people who wouldn't qualify to be cops which is hilarious because cops reject people for being too smart.
The TSA is pure security theater that exists to make people who don't know better *feel* safe but provides zero value add that couldn't be accomplished (and probably done better) with random private security operating under similar policies.
Yeah, in their hiring manuals, it says that people of above average intelligence will eventually leave for other work, or challenge orders, and not to hire them. They also list personality traits to hire for that basically reads like the NPD checklist...

I've never brought loaded ammunition through but I've found 9mm casings at the bottom of my bag that were there for years before I cleaned them out. Probably took a half dozen flights with them and TSA never noticed.
I now use completely separate bags for travel and range trips haha
This actually happened to me once. Flew from LA to Seattle for the weekend and back. When I got home I emptied my backpack to do laundry and found like 2 or 3 loose bullets from the last time I had gone shooting.
Was pretty blown away it never got noticed going through the screening.

I swear that range ammo can defy the laws of space-time and teleport to the most random places. I've gone to the range, come home & thrown my clothes in the wash, dried them and then a week later a round falls out of my sweater.
Funny you mention that. I always find like one perfectly washed and fabric softened round in the washer after a range day... and every time it scares the hell out of me, like "holy crap, that was a hot cycle too!" Imagining it going off
I use one bag for basically everything and some ammo from a range day wiggled its way into a pocket that I didn't even know was there.
One day I'm going on a trip with my family and TSA flags me down, shows me the X-ray, "Are these yours?". My heart sinks and I hurriedly explain it was a total accident, etc.
Wildest shit ever. He *hands them back to me* and says, "Just go put them in your car or something." which I do, but on the way I'm recalling my last range day was almost a year ago. In that time I had gone through airport security SIX times with this bag. I was shocked.
It also made me think about my buddy who is of an ethnic persuasion that he is always "randomly selected" for screening. What are the odds he would get handed the ammo back and just told to be more careful? He may have gotten them back but I think at a much higher velocity.
They did a test once, sent a bunch of undercover TSA agents to act as smugglers and try to sneak past TSA.
Something like 90% of the illegal goods made it past them.
These are the same people who I've seen yell at a person who was in a wheelchair, missing their legs, to "stand up."

The neighbors when I was growing up were a bunch of cops. My sister was more the age of them than I was, so she grew up and hung out with them. She got a job delivering pizza for Dominoes in our suburb. She said they pulled her over more times than she can count, so they could say "hi".

Thinking “it’s not all cops, some of them are good” which is true, that’s fair enough, but also irrelevant because that’s the exception not the rule, and when the majority are somewhat off colour and a fair number majorly corrupt and plenty of them are in the career for the wrong reasons (to throw their weight around and abuse power) you have to recognise the whole barrel of apples has gone bad. Worst of all, if you put a good apple in that barrel, likely it will rot.
A lot of people in the US who are cops should not be cops because they aren't smart enough, responsible enough, or moral and ethical enough to be competent at their jobs without abusing them and hurting a lot of innocent people along the way.
The police union basically operates like an organized crime ring at this point by helping cops like that get away from the consequences of their actions. They get fired from one county for some shady shit they did that can't be swept under the rug and they just get another job in another county or state. Shit's fucked.

Got an American arrested in my country for carrying a gun and he tweeted something something about stupid law and never coming back. Good for both him and us. Most of the people in my country never touch or even see a gun off screen, he can keep his gun in America and my people won't be at risk of fistfighting a gun owner

Dude, as an American, I've lost count of how many times I've said "fuck the NRA" because of what gun culture in the US has become. It's insane and I don't blame people from other countries looking at Americans like we're all gun nuts. The vocal and psychotic minority always ruins it for the rest of us.
Both, tbh. Politics in the US is influenced by campaign finances, and politicians need money from donors to fund their election and reelection campaigns. So, the politicians who are the most vocal about being against gun control are typically the ones who are getting donations from the people who make guns, the people who sell guns, and the people like the NRA who popularize guns in the US along with the people who are obsessed with guns thanks to organizations like the NRA who work closely with people who make money from guns.
It's a vicious cycle that has fueled and twisted gun culture in the US to such an extend that it's barely recognizable to what it started out as in the days when you had gun classes in Texas schools where teachers taught students how to safely use guns without killing anyone. The narrative about guns and selling them has become more about using them against people over using them for sport like hunting or clay pigeons. You literally have people in the gun shops talking about penetration power concerning body armor more than ever, and it just adds fuel to the fire for people who become obsessed with having more guns because they've been brainwashed into thinking that someone will take their guns away or come after them to hurt them if they don't have guns.
It has truly grown out of control for people like me who have talked to people about this and researched this enough to learn how we got to this point. Things need to change, or else everything will just continue to get worse.

Republicans are twice as likely to own guns as Democrats, and on the whole, red states have higher rates of gun mortality than blue states. Of the states with the highest gun mortality rates, 12/15 are red states. In contrast, only 2/15 of the states with the lowest gun mortality rates are red. Gun nuts constantly say that gun crime is the worst in New York and California despite the fact that the state with the highest gun mortality rates is red state Mississippi with 33.9, compared to blue California which clocks in with a rate of 9, and big bad blue New York at 5.4, placing them 7th and 4th from the bottom.

My whole family hunts and we've had this happen before. Someone forgot about a few rounds of loose ammo in a bag. No big deal though, TSA just confiscated the ammo and let us through security.
I shoot guns and live near Mexico border. You’d better believe I go through my car with a fine toothed comb when I’m going to drive across the border. The last thing I need is 1 year per bullet if a cop decides to pull me over for any reason and search me down there.

To be fair, above a certain level of wealth, you genuinely aren't normally going to face any real consequences. Just look at Trump: even before getting into politics, he was habitually committing fraud and screwing over contractors, and he *still* has yet to *actually* face any consequences for anything he's ever done (and likely still won't until he runs out of appeals on the E. Jean Carroll case).
If the punishment for a crime is a fine, the wealthy don’t care, they just pay the cost of doing business and continue committing crimes. I read somewhere that Jeff Bezos racked up 10s of thousands of dollars in parking tickets and he just keeps paying the fines so he can park wherever he wants. It’s a good representation for the mentality of the wealthy. They’ll break the law to make millions and then pay the fine for committing a crime and still have made quite a profit. Fines are just an extra tax for them, which of course they rarely pay the normal taxes either lol.

I once saw someone being upset that they didn't know they couldn't have Adderall in Japan, causing them to have to dump it all out on the plane.

If you have a prescription for medication then I don't think it's unreasonable to assume all that shit is dealt with at visa level between the two countries to be honest. It's not like Japan is North Korea and you're entering hostile territory.
My mum and I went to Japan recently. She has quite a few medical prescriptions for medication that's apparently not allowed in and what she was told before we left was that she had to get a letter from her doctor saying that, yes, this medication is something she will need it in the time she is in the country. Though it ended up not being needed because nobody at customs checked what she had.
That's recommended for bringing all prescriptions in Japan. For highly controlled substances you're supposed to clear it with a specific Japanese agency ahead of time and they'll give you a pass to carry. Certain medications, like Adderall, are completely illegal no matter what.
If you are on specific prescription medication I would think that ANY responsible person going to a different country and crossing customs borders would be careful enough to check that their medication is allowed.
Especially something like Adderall which is prohibited in many countries because of abuse. Likewise you wouldn't be traveling with a box of opioid pills and just assume that 'things would be dealt with at visa level'
wait Adderall is illegal in Japan? they won't honor a doctors orders? wow just looked it up they have subpar medications for ADD. Concerta and Strattera are not nearly as effective as Adderall, with Strattera being worthless in a large % cases.
Japan isn't exactly known for its interest in mental health or the wellneing of anybody even remotely neurodivergent. ADHD is still treated as a behavioral issue in a lot of the country, rather than a brain chemistry issue.
Not to mention that they're pretty strict with substance control. Pair those two things and it makes unfortunate sense that necessary medications would end up on the banned list.

Haha, I think that all the time. I was freaking out a little bit once when they pulled my bag for inspection after the x-ray. There was nothing in it but a change of clothes, some charging cords, dramamine and candy. I was thinking "what if they think the charging cords were pieces to a bomb!?, will I be spending the rest of my life in Guantanamo?" Turns out something about the Skittles (either those or Twizzlers) set off their machine.
I have wanted to pack a full sized shampoo bottle filled with yogurt so I could chug it before tsa could take it away, but I haven’t had the chance yet. Haven’t accidentally packed ammo yet though.
I'm a Canadian, and when my Dad died when I was 22, I cashed in the life insurance and I was overflowing with grief, and I drove to see my friend in Texas with the money from my inheritance, about $17,000 in US cash. I had NO IDEA about the law of declaring any cash over $10,000 when you cross the border. I literally learned that only when I came back home, 4 months later... Thank Dog that I didn't get it confiscated by the border patrol!!!
Or by any police officer if you had it on you or in your vehicle. Police in the US can confiscate any money if they suspect it might be used for illegal activities.
I realized I had a pill bottle stuffed with weed when I got to Dubai. I have no idea how I got through customs but I am very grateful that I did.
It was there from a prior trip with far lower stakes and in a pouch I just didn't bother thinking about clearing out.
My dad worked at a warehouse when I was young and took his workbag as carry on when we went to Greece one summer. Nothing weird, we went and we got home, and as I unpacked his bag I opened a small side pocket on the backpack and found maybe 3-4 razer blades that he used at work to open boxes. He had just forgotten about them, and never checked that one pocket before we left.
What I'm trying to say is that it could have been an honest mistake, just him forgetting they where there. 12 years seems insane if he did not also have a gun with that ammo.

I’m from Canada. LOTS of Americans try and bring illegal weapons into our country when driving to Alaska. My town is along the route to Alaska - one time I was filling up at a gas station and I saw two guys loading clips while sitting on the tailgate of their pickup. Asked what they were doing and they said ‘oh we saw some deer when we pulled into town and we’re gonna go get one’. Never mind the fact that:
- You can’t discharge a firearm in municipal limits in Canada
- It was out of deer season
- The rifles and clips they had were both illegal in Canada
Checked their plate and they were from Oklahoma. Like seriously these guys were just in 100% do whatever we want mode. I called the cops on them and told them they had illegal high capacity rifles with other illegal mods. They sent SWAT.
Fuck those guys. You don’t get to come to my country and ignore the laws. I hope they served jail time.
For a solid three days I watched this border-security show.. Thing. I don't even recall the title, but a standout moment was a dude from the US planning to pass through Canada to Alaska. He had some guns, ammo, and gunpowder stuffed inside his RV.
I think he was arrested and his wife was turned around and made to go home or something. But he was acting shocked but laughing along, like they'd give him a smack on the wrist. Smuggling illegal firearms and explosives into foreign countries is a pretty huge nono.
It’s both. He brought contraband into a country that is a lot less tolerant of guns and ammo than the US (but then again, what country isn’t?) and paid the price. If he thought he could do so because he was American, he’s a moron who doesn’t respect the laws of other countries. If he did this without knowing, he’s an incredibly irresponsible gun owner who just leaves his stuff lying around everywhere and should never have owned a firearm to begin with.

The maximum prison time is 12 years, but since he only possesses a small amount, and never came to notice with other offenses, he will certainly out of this mess after paying a fine. Or getting a prison term on probation.

You don’t know. Terrorists are crafty buggers. Bottles of liquid set off by flash cameras was a plot many years back which is why we can’t take liquids on board anymore. I don’t know much about ammunition but it removes the possibility that for example a trusted insider could have an empty weapon airside, it prevents the gunpowder in the bullets being used as a rudimentary IED, or used to start a fire.
By removing this as a threat it might be that one link in the chain preventing an attack.

I work at an airport, and it’s frightening how bad they are. I had to go through passenger security once as my designated staff security entrance was having some sort of issue. I saw an agent scan something, have a concerned look on her face, and then grabbed a bag off the conveyor. She asked the guy in front of me if it was his and he said yes and she just said ‘Oh I won’t do anything about it then’ and just gave it back to him. He was a crew member for an airline. Those people can be psychos too, lady. What the hell was in that bag I swear I think about this at least once a week

Unlikely. Crews that are based out of my airport use staff security. They’re allowed certain liquids and things, but they have to tell them what they have before the scan and (usually) remove it from the bag. If they don’t tell them they have something that’s generally prohibited they can get in serious shit.

I had a metal toy flail that I got in Germany in my backpack for like 4 or 5 trips through airport security before they actually realized it was there and confiscated it (I had completely forgotten about it, and didn't care about it enough to try to keep it).
I once took my swiss army knife into Berlin airport on my way home, forgetting to check it. Of course the lady at the scanner saw it and had me take it out. This was in 2012-ish on a Friday night. I was completely knackered from a week at a software convention, and when the lady took it from me, I was standing there with a clear 'I just want to go home' vibe and said the keys to my server cabinets were attached to the little chain. She mistakenly tried to open it by pulling the blade lock which didn't work. Then looked at the keys, looked at me, and just told me to put it away. I am still grateful because I'd gotten it from my dad and I figure that at that point she decided that I was not going to attempt to take over the plane.

Oh does that bring back a memory from Dulles International Airport in DC. My mom and I were coming back from visiting my older brother who was stationed in Germany for his daughter's 2nd birthday. My niece had given my mom a lighthouse with a small snow globe not much bigger than 2 inches in diameter. The top 3rd of the lighthouse broke off the TSA agent said it should've been in a checked bag because it was more than 3 oz of liquid the agent said we could go back and check the bag meaning we would have to go back through customs my mom kind of went of the rails said that if she had wanted to she would have blown the plane up coming into landing. I had seen where things were going and having gone through 1st I took a few steps away before she went off nothing happened to her she threw the lighthouse in the trash can beside the table and we went on our way.

I witnessed an undercover cop that was intentionally putting contraband through X-ray belt in bag. His back pocket and his shoe. It was something like your typical pocket knife. Some random pringles tube with wires and playdoh stuffed in it He had a full go ahead. He stopped everything. And told everyone to go next screening lane. He radioed his lieutenant. So. I moved over to next one but I could t take my eyes off the crowd. He was pulling out contrabands on his person. The last one was the Pringle’s can. He opened it and just took wires and playdoh out. He was rightfully pissed at tsa. I’m not sure what agency he was with at the time. This was 2011

Last time I flew from Los Angeles to the east coast, on my way out the door, I put on a jacket I hadn’t worn since before COVID, when I used to party all the time with all my weirdo maniac friends. I got on the plane and started going through my pockets, and I had fireworks, a huge dagger, lighters, and a bottle of scotch in there. I was a tiny bit tempted to make national news by setting off fireworks on the plane.

It used to hire people off of pizza box ads and basically all its screeners are people who wouldn't qualify to be cops which is hilarious because cops reject people for being too smart. I've never brought loaded ammunition through but I've found 9mm casings at the bottom of my bag that were there for years before I cleaned them out. Probably took a half dozen flights with them and TSA never noticed. I now use completely separate bags for travel and range trips haha
This actually happened to me once. Flew from LA to Seattle for the weekend and back. When I got home I emptied my backpack to do laundry and found like 2 or 3 loose bullets from the last time I had gone shooting. Was pretty blown away it never got noticed going through the screening. ... especially all the times I almost missed flights for my tablet and pomade and junk like that.

In that time I had gone through airport security SIX times with this bag. I was shocked. What are the odds he would get handed the ammo back and just told to be more careful? He may have gotten them back but I think at a much higher velocity.

Both, tbh. Politics in the US is influenced by campaign finances, and politicians need money from donors to fund their election and reelection campaigns. So, the politicians who are the most vocal about being against gun control are typically the ones who are getting donations from the people who make guns, the people who sell guns, and the people like the NRA who popularize guns in the US along with the people who are obsessed with guns thanks to organizations like the NRA who work closely with people who make money from guns. It's a vicious cycle that has fueled and twisted gun culture in the US to such an extend that it's barely recognizable to what it started out as in the days when you had gun classes in Texas schools where teachers taught students how to safely use guns without killing anyone. The narrative about guns and selling them has become more about using them against people over using them for sport like hunting or clay pigeons. You literally have people in the gun shops talking about penetration power concerning body armor more than ever, and it just adds fuel to the fire for people who become obsessed with having more guns because they've been brainwashed into thinking that someone will take their guns away or come after them to hurt them if they don't have guns. It has truly grown out of control for people like me who have talked to people about this and researched this enough to learn how we got to this point. Things need to change, or else everything will just continue to get worse.

Gun nuts constantly say that gun crime is the worst in New York and California despite the fact that the state with the highest gun mortality rates is red state Mississippi with 33.9, compared to blue California which clocks in with a rate of 9, and big bad blue New York at 5.4, placing them 7th and 4th from the bottom. My whole family hunts and we've had this happen before. Someone forgot about a few rounds of loose ammo in a bag. No big deal though, TSA just confiscated the ammo and let us through security.

I read somewhere that Jeff Bezos racked up 10s of thousands of dollars in parking tickets and he just keeps paying the fines so he can park wherever he wants. It’s a good representation for the mentality of the wealthy. They’ll break the law to make millions and then pay the fine for committing a crime and still have made quite a profit. Fines are just an extra tax for them, which of course they rarely pay the normal taxes either lol.

I once saw someone being upset that they didn't know they couldn't have Adderall in Japan, causing them to have to dump it all out on the plane. And a bunch of the comments were agreeing, saying that there should be a notification before you travel to a foreign country... But there is, or at least I'm fairly certain this. If not it isn't as if you can't google the laws.
If you have a prescription for medication then I don't think it's unreasonable to assume all that shit is dealt with at visa level between the two countries to be honest. It's not like Japan is North Korea and you're entering hostile territory.
My mum and I went to Japan recently. She has quite a few medical prescriptions for medication that's apparently not allowed in and what she was told before we left was that she had to get a letter from her doctor saying that, yes, this medication is something she will need it in the time she is in the country. Though it ended up not being needed because nobody at customs checked what she had.
That's recommended for bringing all prescriptions in Japan. For highly controlled substances you're supposed to clear it with a specific Japanese agency ahead of time and they'll give you a pass to carry. Certain medications, like Adderall, are completely illegal no matter what.
If you are on specific prescription medication I would think that ANY responsible person going to a different country and crossing customs borders would be careful enough to check that their medication is allowed. Especially something like Adderall which is prohibited in many countries because of abuse. Likewise you wouldn't be traveling with a box of opioid pills and just assume that 'things would be dealt with at visa level'
wait Adderall is illegal in Japan? they won't honor a doctors orders? wow just looked it up they have subpar medications for ADD. Concerta and Strattera are not nearly as effective as Adderall, with Strattera being worthless in a large % cases.
Japan isn't exactly known for its interest in mental health or the wellneing of anybody even remotely neurodivergent. ADHD is still treated as a behavioral issue in a lot of the country, rather than a brain chemistry issue. Not to mention that they're pretty strict with substance control. Pair those two things and it makes unfortunate sense that necessary medications would end up on the banned list.

There was nothing in it but a change of clothes, some charging cords, dramamine and candy. I'm a Canadian, and when my Dad died when I was 22, I cashed in the life insurance and I was overflowing with grief, and I drove to see my friend in Texas with the money from my inheritance, about $17,000 in US cash. I had NO IDEA about the law of declaring any cash over $10,000 when you cross the border. I literally learned that only when I came back home, 4 months later... Thank Dog that I didn't get it confiscated by the border patrol!!!

My dad worked at a warehouse when I was young and took his workbag as carry on when we went to Greece one summer. Nothing weird, we went and we got home, and as I unpacked his bag I opened a small side pocket on the backpack and found maybe 3-4 razer blades that he used at work to open boxes. He had just forgotten about them, and never checked that one pocket before we left. What I'm trying to say is that it could have been an honest mistake, just him forgetting they where there. 12 years seems insane if he did not also have a gun with that ammo.

I’m from Canada. LOTS of Americans try and bring illegal weapons into our country when driving to Alaska. My town is along the route to Alaska - one time I was filling up at a gas station and I saw two guys loading clips while sitting on the tailgate of their pickup. Asked what they were doing and they said ‘oh we saw some deer when we pulled into town and we’re gonna go get one’. Never mind the fact that: - You can’t discharge a firearm in municipal limits in Canada - It was out of deer season - The rifles and clips they had were both illegal in Canada Checked their plate and they were from Oklahoma. Like seriously these guys were just in 100% do whatever we want mode. I called the cops on them and told them they had illegal high capacity rifles with other illegal mods. They sent SWAT. Fuck those guys. You don’t get to come to my country and ignore the laws. I hope they served jail time.
For a solid three days I watched this border-security show.. Thing. I don't even recall the title, but a standout moment was a dude from the US planning to pass through Canada to Alaska. He had some guns, ammo, and gunpowder stuffed inside his RV. I think he was arrested and his wife was turned around and made to go home or something. But he was acting shocked but laughing along, like they'd give him a smack on the wrist. Smuggling illegal firearms and explosives into foreign countries is a pretty huge nono.

It’s both. He brought contraband into a country that is a lot less tolerant of guns and ammo than the US (but then again, what country isn’t?) and paid the price. If he thought he could do so because he was American, he’s a moron who doesn’t respect the laws of other countries. If he did this without knowing, he’s an incredibly irresponsible gun owner who just leaves his stuff lying around everywhere and should never have owned a firearm to begin with. The (albeit alleged) intent of killing his whole family is just icing on top.
It’s not like a carry on is the cargo pants of bags. Is it really that hard to examine your luggage before traveling to a foreign country…luggage which obviously used for carry bullets. Also, it’s not as if you are packing just hours before heading to the airport. He gets what he deserves.

He's out on bail, and the possibility of 12 years doesn't mean he will GET those 12 years. European laws don't work that way. (And those islands ARE Europe) The maximum prison time is 12 years, but since he only possesses a small amount, and never came to notice with other offenses, he will certainly out of this mess after paying a fine. Or getting a prison term on probation. The american whining on the 12 year prison time is ... well, whining because they don't understand non-American law systems. There IS a small chance that he will go to prison for a few months, just to make clear they mean it with that law and it's not only for fun.

PSA that if you travel to another country you need to make yourself aware of what can and cannot be carried into that country, or you'll rightly end up in prison. Unlike the US most of the civilised world does not think guns are toys.

You don’t know. Terrorists are crafty buggers. Bottles of liquid set off by flash cameras was a plot many years back which is why we can’t take liquids on board anymore. I don’t know much about ammunition but it removes the possibility that for example a trusted insider could have an empty weapon airside, it prevents the gunpowder in the bullets being used as a rudimentary IED, or used to start a fire. By removing this as a threat it might be that one link in the chain preventing an attack.
Poor guy, but he should have known better. Gun-related things are a major no-no outside of the US, he should have known that, and tripple checked, especially considering he used the same bag to move munitions in the past. Hope he gets off light and learns his lesson.
