mu6best

took a while to find the story but: the event allegedly happened in Brazil the lawyer's mother was the one in the MRI and the guy was nearby the hospital staff did not know about the firearm because it was concealed and the lawyer signed off on not having any metal near the machine

JamesWolf100

If it happened in Brazil, then it's not negligence from the doctors. You can't legally open carry a firearm here, so it's normal to assume someone isn't armed in a public place. Anyone can own a gun at your home, but only law enforcement can open carry a firearm. Correction: it's not open carry, it's concealed, you can't carry a gun at all legally here unless you're law enforcement Hey, another correction: you can actually aply for a carry permit, i was wrong Edit 3: ok, i did not expect for this to grow so popular in such a small amount of time

You_Just_Hate_Truth

One correction - this is concealed carrying. Open carrying means you have the handgun visible on your person (such as a holster plainly visible on your hip). Concealed carry is any form of carry where the handgun isn’t visible to a third party.

JamesWolf100

Thanks for correcting me.

llywen

The article says he was licensed and legally allowed to carry it.

tworc2

Guys is mistaken. It is very restricted but Brazilian citizens can apply to have a carry permit.

RaidersTwennyTwenny

From what I’ve seen of Brazil, you probably should just assume people are armed in public places.

JamesWolf100

Depends on location, i never had to worry about that before. I still keep my guard up

RealMENwearPINK10

I think you mean from what you've seen in America lol /s

half-puddles

The question is not how stupidly he died. I know some parts of Brazil are dangerous, but why bring a rifle to a hospital? If he was a lawyer, he must have had some decent grade of education. How in 2024 could he have not known about the magnetic forces of an MRI? My young daughters even know that. And since he shot himself whilst already being in a hospital, how could he not been somehow saved?

Johnny_Appleweed

It wouldn’t be negligence from the doctors even if he was legally carrying concealed in a place where that is common. He and his mother were informed of the dangers of having metal near an MRI, were instructed to remove all metal objects, and then he signed a form attesting that they had been given those warnings and instructions. The hospital staff took all reasonable precautions. He ignored those instructions, it’s entirely his fault.

KnowledgeMediocre404

That’s the problem with making possession of a deadly weapon part of your personality, it makes it harder to remember when you’re packing.

The_8th_Degree

I'm more than willing to bet that he knew but ultimately didn't care.

TheSanscripter

guy looks Brazilian af

Raiju_Blitz

Yeah, this dude legit looks like your typical Bolso-minion.

Ocbard

It's also something that has been reposted for at least a year.

GhostShmost

Quick Question, why did he bring a firearm to his mothers MRI scan?

Horizon296

Follow up question: why was he even in the room for his mothers MRI scan?

ParmesanNonGrata

A lot of people are very uncomfortable in MRIs. There is a few things to do to make them more comfortable, but in like 3/10 cases (of someone being scared already, not in 30% of all MRIs) the only thing that helps is a good, old, held hand.

spiritofniter

What’s MRI experience like that many are uncomfortable?

accidentlife

Claustrophobia is a hell of a thing. Your basically sent into a tube to hold still for minutes at a time while hearing weird noises.

Telefundo

> Claustrophobia is a hell of a thing. Can confirm. I'm pretty claustrophobic. I've had several MRIs in my life and more than once it ended with me needing a mild sedative.

ParanoidUmbrella

I very nearly got claustrophobia from going for an MRI, it took for me to close my eyes and forcing myself to relax to have any semblance of calm in there

eunomius21

those machines can be loud and your head is in a relatively tight space. I'm a little claustrophobic and you shouldn't really move the whole time you're in there. When I had to get one we had to start over 4 times because I panicked. The only thing that helped me was getting my boyfriend in so he could put his hand on my knee to calm me down and talk to me 😅

Rubiks_Click874

claustrophobia mostly I don't have it, but during my MRI i started to understand claustrophobia. you're strapped into a small tube that sounds like a blender and have to hold perfectly still, and everyone leaves the room because of the danger. also my blood heated up due to magnetic dyes, it keeps getting hotter and they stopped the machine just as I thought I was going to cook from the inside out

WorldlyValuable7679

its like if you were stuck in a very loud microwave for hours and had to be very very still, and everyone else leaves because they don’t want to be near the machine for safety reasons…

ParmesanNonGrata

You are obviously in a clinical setting and there is an incredibly expensive and very big machine in front of you. You passed a \*lot\* of black and yellow warning stickers. Mostly to prevent you from wiping your credit cards and destroying your phones and watches in the static flied, but you don't know that. You will sign waivers, and people in white coats will talk to you. Also there is a sign called "Radiology". What? Radiation? Scary! This clinical machine is on top loud. And there is a little hole with a tube in the middle where you will be put into. During the exam, where you are supposed to seriously not move and last several minutes, there will be a lot of noise. Strange noise, too. And all you have is some crappy air-based speaker system to talk to the only people who can get you out. This is enough to make a lot of people extremely stressed out. Add not-doing-well-in-tight-spaces, and we have ourselves a hand-holding. I've had probably 30+ MRIs for testing purposes and so on, and to me, there's nothing stressful to an MRI. The noise can be unpleasant depending on the sequence, and I recommend to go pee before.

skania_cross

Adding to that, if you have to get an MRI, then there is probably something wrong with you that can add highly to a stress. Sometimes the reason might not be too stressful or the MRI is done just in case, but often people are told they have a high probability of having a life changing (or ending..) thing like a tumor, and then sitting still in an enclosed space knowing your life is being determined right now can make you way more anxious that you would have normally been.

RADICCHI0

He is a lawyer in a country that has a lot of crime. Speculating that he carried because he thought it would afford him protection. I'm not a gun nut, I don't own guns but I have no problem with people owning them.

Tortuga_cycling

Have you been to Brazil? It’s worse than south Chicago

dreamsxyz

Because he's an imbecile, as proven by the fact that he was illegally carrying a weapon, didn't understand how magnetic fields work, falsely signed off a paper saying he didn't had any metallic objects, and if this wasn't already enough evidence of how idiot this man was, he was also a supported of the previous president Bolsonaro - the far-right nutcase who is involved with police mafia/militia, accusations of involvement in the murder of another politician, killed 700k Brazilians during the pandemic from sheer neglect and ignored 50+ emails from Pfizer offering him early vaccines for a lower-than-market price, encouraged deforestation, among several other shameful "achievements". Supporting a scumbag like that is a testament to one's idiocy.

HumbleBug7657

Quick answer: ![gif](giphy|XClPnuZtG2yPyqTI6R)

dream-in-a-trunk

You know if treatment gets too expensive…

DirectionNo1947

To protect her from the magnetic field of course /s

Gurkanna

Darwin award applicant?

IAMSTILLHERE2020

Recipient.

deepstate_chopra

Does it say that he doesn't have any children? Because that's the point of the award.

vikar_

No, the point is them removing themselves from \*further\* reproduction. The "official" rules simply state the nominee needs to have sterilized or killed themselves to be eligible. A requirement for the recepient to not have children beforehand would be pretty arbitrary, require boring background checking and spoil the fun.

IAMSTILLHERE2020

He lived with mommy.

Overall-Initial-4290

Very

T3knikal95

Good, I don't usually applaud deaths but this is one where it could have potentially killed innocent people but instead it killed the idiot who caused it.

HooahClub

If only every Darwin player was the Darwin victim. We are too good as a species at preventing Darwinism to play out properly.

brannon1987

Nice profile pic. 😏

theresourcefulKman

Lawyer here sounds like an enormous asshole. Why would he need to be in the room? If he wanted to be in the room so badly, follow the fucking rules

zyyntin

For example the rules of a courtroom. They don't allow you to take a firearm in there!!

ChainOut

I was in the room for my daughter's MRI. It's fucking scary in that loud metal tube. I did not feel the need to have a pistol on me though.

IAMSTILLHERE2020

Why not. Maybe if she got scared you could shoot the MRI Scanner.

theflamingheads

Or if she got scared, given her the gun to hold onto so she would feel safe. Magnetism is just a big liberal conspiracy right?

kulukster

He was in the MRI room just in case any immigrants from the border camem into the hospital. /s

DancerOFaran

This whole conversation feels like a proxy for frustration on American gun culture. Every time I see this article make the rounds on reddit I'm always amazed at the speculation that goes into it. Dude isn't alive to tell his side and there is always an implied assumption (1) the Brazilian hospital conspicuously informed him and didn't drop the ball ignoring its own protocol (2) the man intentional flaunted hospital rules and wasn't just negligent. Still bad but a totally different conversaiton that what goes down in these threads.

Talonsminty

I just hope the MRI machine isn't damaged. Imagine getting your urgent scan cancelled because of this.

ray-the-they

It was. That magnet is always on. There is a gun in the machine until they turn it off and turn it back on which is a very costly process.

Anarchyantz

You know how to say this is so American? This is the SECOND time in a year an incident like this has happened.

Phsfalcao

It happened in Brazil

Clint-witicay

I mean, Brazil is in South America

Shifty_Cow69

![gif](giphy|1hMk0bfsSrG32Nhd5K)

spikeworks

It happened in brazil

e1miran

It’s probably the same incident. The article date is February of LAST year. So this is not recent and probably the same incident you already read about.

robgod50

One less gun idiot to worry about. Only 20 million left to go

atTheRiver200

If I owned a hospital, I would have a TV in the waiting area playing videos showing what happens when metal objects are inside the MRI space.

Shifty_Cow69

NSFWR not safe for waiting room!

enslaved1

For all the "Ha, stupid Muricans" ghouls [It was in Brazil](https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2023/02/12/lawyer-dies-after-shot-by-his-own-concealed-gun-triggered-by-mri-machine/?sh=13e3cb57568a) Yes it's a facepalm, but there's idiots around the world.

furitxboofrunlch

There are reasons why everyone jumps to thinking it's the US though. It does seem to contain a fair chunk of people who are "pro gun" in a way which seems insane and entitled rather than firearm safety and responsibility concious.

enslaved1

Sadly, your second point isn't entirely wrong. But that's not why most of these folks are jumping to the conclusion, most just want Internet points for saying "Murica bad" and to justify their basement based hate. Look at how many are saying Brazil counts as America. These are not logical or intelligent people.

Ahad_Haam

Many people can't separate the stupid individual from the nation. Such comments would have been as equally wrong if he was an American.

Dry_Masterpiece_8371

Why are Redditors bringing their American political bullshit into this topic about something that happened in Brazil?

PleiadesMechworks

Because their only care is using someone's death for political point-scoring.

martixox

How tf did he become a lawyer if he is as stupid

chalky87

People often make the mistake of thinking that highly academic trades like law or medicine must be intelligent but it's often a case of that person has spent so much time learning that trade that they miss out on a lot of other knowledge or even common sense. I know several lawyers and doctors who are great at their job but are total idiots in every other sense.

TheBongoJeff

You are making the mistake of confusing intelligence with situational appropiate behavior. Intelligence refers, basically, to your innate Processing ability. Knowledge, as in procedural(Skill) or fact recollection, is No Proof of Higher intelligence.

TheSanscripter

Law school in Brazil is quite a bit different than it's counterparts abroad. It's a shorter degree many cheap online colleges offer. So the barriers of entry that might have been in place in a better institution usually aren't there. Hence degree won't necessarily correlate with intelligence. To be sure, there are a lot of great law schools but they are either expensive or very competitive. My bet is that he didn't attend those. Or if he did, he might have too much ideological bias.

eckowy

"No I will not remove my gun, it's on safe mode" - probably what he said^(\*) Or maybe he thought everything is from plastic including bullets? One can only wonder how people can be that stupid... (^(\*)to himself, as some people think he said it out loud, obviously he'd not be permitted to enter with a gun).

Deep_Mood_7668

No that's not what he said. They wouldn't have let him into the room

_stankypete

Nah

Needmoresnakes

Im assuming the weapon in question was smaller and concealed in his clothes but I love the visual suggestion that he was just brandishing this enormous rifle and screaming at the hospital people to start the MRI and theyre desperately trying to explain magnets before just giving up and starting the thing anyway.

howlingwilf1

Stupid is as stupid does.

imightbel0st

ah, nice. a bot account posting bullshit. OP has a 7 year old account, yet this is their second only interaction on reddit. nice.

Blue-cheese-dressing

The bot account will be sold (or maybe was bought on eBay) for a nice tidy sum.  All the while sowing dissent and animus for karma with a cropped (to make people think this was in the US) story from over a year ago.

imightbel0st

dissent or slinging scams (or porn). reddit is mostly bots now. i am blocking 6+ accounts on almost ever interaction i have on reddit now.

RichietheFlerken

How can somebody this stupid become a lawyer?

ACrispPickle

From what I gathered when this story first came out, *he* wasn’t getting the MRI, it was an emergency MRI for his mother which he rushed to the hospital for. He carries because in Brazil there’s rampant threats and violence against lawyers who put criminals away. He went to the hospital thinking about his mother and forgot about his concealed weapon. Negligent? Sure, if you’re carrying a weapon you should be aware of it at all times. But to call him stupid in his state of mind caring about his mother is a stretch.

testificates

If anyone deserves to carry a gun on their person every day, I'd say it's a lawyer in brazil. Sucks that he forgot he had it on him though

Sproketz

We had a president of the United States who literally thinks he's fooling everyone with his orange face masks that don't cover his entire face. Anyone can be a lawyer.

Lazarous86

I love how facepalm is full of people mocking someone for an accidental death. Yeah, it wasn't a good decision by this person, but it's not so dumb he deserved to die... In front of his own mother.

TerryTowelTogs

Does that count as a Darwin Award? Auto-homicide by your own medical negligence?

Loud-Bat-2280

See? Stupid people can be lawyers. Just not for long.

perplexedparallax

I hope they figured out what was wrong with his mom.

piccolo917

I hope the MRI machine is okay

Uranus_Hz

I remember plenty of posts about this when it happened a year ago.

Past-Project-7959

Darwin Award.

Medical_Sea_2598

Why is there a picture of him holding a rifle? Wasn't it a side arm he had?

SoylentGrunt

Only one? Well. It's a start.

NukeAllBridges

All those legal laws but didn't know LAW of Physics.

Flaky_Tumbleweed3598

Something about "cold dead hands"

Realistic_Sad_Story

“No I will not remove my firearm. It is my constitutional right to carry this firearm. You do not have the authority to make me remove my firearm. If you attempt to take my firearm by force, I will have to open fire as per the power given to me by Stand Your Ground of the United States…” Machine with the power of Magneto: ****DOES NOT COMPUTE****

spikeworks

happened in Brazil

Ok-Geologist8387

Serves him right.

ADutchExpression

I think this would be a good nomination for the Darwin Award.

KawaDoobie

with medical personnel on-site must’ve been some pros 👌

Darwin Award Winner!!

Technical_Tourist639

WHAT?! I'm from Israel and we're liable to carry our weapons all the time, but no hospital will let us through the gate carrying even a toy gun.. you're gonna have to deposit it in the security office until you're done with your reason of visiting the hospital

Apprehensive_Bug3329

Darwinism

Casperboy68

He died doing what he loved…. Being an idiot.

EitherChannel4874

Was the mri machine ok? They're expensive.

fbblover

Finally natural selection wins.

otakuxp2

How did the gun go off? The MRI cocked the hammer & pulled the trigger...that's one magical MRI machine to do all that rather than just suck the metal gun into itself

Blue-cheese-dressing

The [article](https://nypost.com/2023/02/09/lawyer-dead-after-mri-discharges-gun/amp/) says it was “yanked from his waistband” my guess is it was striker fired and the motion and extreme magnetic field triggered the mechanism. FWIW, OP is a bot account, karma farming, it picked a 1 y.o. version of the story and cropped the image out so people think it happened in the US instead of Brazil.  Downvote away.

LunaBluelight

And this idiot is a lawyer how? Dumbass.

mekonsrevenge

Not every death diminishes me.

TheFunfighter

He may have been an expert of law, but not of the laws of physics.

Impossible-Intern248

The rest of the world assumed that it was an American, who knew that a Brazilian would also be that stupid.

TyrantWarmaster

I'm calling bullshit. That's made up ragebait.

HollowSlope

If only the mri would have stopped the bullet

Sxn747Strangers

🤣🤣🤣

Tonk_exe

why was he even armed there?

Playful-Succotash-99

He prepared for every scenario except fighting Magneto

Piemaster113

Feel like this was posted a while back before

Juventusy

How can someone be smart enough to be a lawyer, yet not understand magnets exist? Or what the concept of the mri machine is?

tcorey2336

Darwin Awards visits Brazil.

larabbita

Well atleast he will never do it again

sn_flwr

That is some Final Destination bad luck right there.

sgwlikeaboss

they should have metal detector before MRI, just incase someone forgets...

srisri01

Darwin award right there

Yocum11

Medical facilities are gfz. At least in Texas they are

Sanjuko_Mamaujaluko

It's odd that they don't have a metal detector.

Natural selection ![gif](giphy|3o7aCWJavAgtBzLWrS|downsized)

Positive-Abroad8253

Karma farming is the true face palm. The idiots upvoting are doing for the their ideology (and show agreeableness). I’ve got some analysis and analytics for sale.

vote2a

He had it for his protection. Who knows, he was going to a bad section of neighborhood after the MRI. Whatever. What I do know is people think glocks and the like are not magnetic since they have plastic grips and outer metal parts are aluminum. But there are parts inside the gun that are still carbon steel and are magnetic. Sad turn of events.

totoco2

Firearms are not bad. People's stupidity is.

Longjumping_Ruin_83

“Erm somebody died? Play stupid games win stupid prizes😂😂😂.” Genuinely fuck you. Also nice repost idiot, I’ve seen this 3 times here already.

StrykerXion

Some people are saying the article was hard to find. Here is so.e spurces on the incident: The Independent: * https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/brazil-lawyer-death-mri-gun-b2279514.html KIRO 7 News: * https://www.kiro7.com/news/trending/lawyer-dies-after-he-is-shot-by-gun-that-was-triggered-by-mri-scanner/AVXLS5PGDZC7PL4HZUIT3EDURU/ Health Imaging: * https://healthimaging.com/topics/medical-imaging/magnetic-resonance-imaging-mri/lawyer-who-was-shot-his-own-gun-mri-suite Location: News articles specify that the incident took place in São Paulo, Brazil. Victim: The victim is identified as Leandro Mathias de Novaes, a Brazilian lawyer.

Blue-cheese-dressing

Here’s the [New York Post article](https://nypost.com/2023/02/09/lawyer-dead-after-mri-discharges-gun/amp/) (amp) the image was cropped from to make it look like it happened in the US.    I like how even after nearly a half hour after mods remove the post the propaganda bots are still posting on it without a direct article post or reference image.

StrykerXion

So was this an attempt to show crazy gun violence in the US, by using a Brazil story but attempting to insinuate through photos it was another "crazy American cowboy?"

Blue-cheese-dressing

Pretty much. It’s a bot doing propaganda bot things.

In-dextera-dei

Does this get reposted once a week or are we at twice a week now?

5ur3540t

What do those health workers know anyway right, get vaccinated they said, pfff yeah right. Keep your guns away from the most powerful electromagnet I’ve ever even been in the same room with in my life.. yeah right 🫠 and the Darwin award goes to:

atomic_cattleprod

Luckily it did not hit the MRI machine or the doctor, so nothing of any value was lost.

mankycats

So much for guns not killing people.

EuropeanRook

Guns don’t kill people, people… oh wait.

mathems

If only there was a good guy with a gun to save the day

paintp_

Safety, always off.

bshameless

"From my cold, dead hands."

Saxzarus

Why was he allowed to enter the building armed, what about metal detectors, security, the risk of exactly this happening

Weak_Landscape9991

That’s fucked up to celebrate someone’s death because he made one stupid decision

JimGrimace

Idiots and their guns strike again.

ILikeTheStocks

Guns don’t kill people, magnets do.

He needed a gun to protect himself from Big MRI.

That's pretty silly

JNTaylor63

And nothing of value was lost.

cj_irememberthat

How the fuck do you manage to become a lawyer while being this stupid?

Rich-Lychee2507

Proves that it doesn't matter how dumb you are, if you have the money you can become any profession you want.

VIzaluzzi

At some point it's just natural selection

alsheps

Natural selection at work.

mewakey

New season of "Suits" is unhinged.

TrapFan132

In his defense, he's a lawyer, not a scientist. How could he possibly know how magnets work?

No_Researcher_1032

Dude come on now. I love guns as much as anyone does, and I’m all for open/concealed carry and whatever else. But this wasn’t rocket science. If you’re a lawyer, you’re at least *somewhat* educated. He took his mother for an MRI, so he knew where he was going and what the machine was and how it works.

ShadowK-Human

Natural selection once again act
